Fallout 4 Project Valkyrie Mod Quest Guide https://www.gameskinny.com/z0vch/fallout-4-project-valkyrie-mod-quest-guide https://www.gameskinny.com/z0vch/fallout-4-project-valkyrie-mod-quest-guide Sat, 01 Sep 2018 15:45:25 -0400 Ty Arthur

Ready to reinstall Fallout 4 and experience a whole new quest line with a bunch of new companions? Project Valkyrie re-tools much of the end game and gives you a whole new storyline to work through.

In order to use Project Valkyrie, you need to have the Outcasts & Remnants mod to be installed first. The Fusion City mod is recommended, but not required. Your character also needs to be able to pick master locks or you can't complete the quests.

Because the mod quests intersect heavily with the main vanilla quests, there's possibility for conflicts to arise. If you run into a problem where a quest isn't finishing properly, talk to one of the new companions and pick the option to end or restart the current quest.

Besides the new quests and companions, Project Valkyrie significantly alters how the end games plays out. You no longer have to pick one specific faction to work with, and you aren't railroaded into help that faction annihilate the others.

Starting Project Valkyrie

This mod's primary quest line is tied closely to the vanilla game's Secret Of Cabot House side quest, which has to be started first to gain access to the new Project Valkyrie content.

If you've already completed this quest and can freely enter the Parsons State Insane Asylum, just head straight there to find Valkyrie. Talking to her begins the In A Darkened Room quest.

If you haven't started or completed the Cabot content yet, first travel to Cabot House, which is found north of Goodneighor and west of the Old North Church.

The door is locked and can't be picked, so talk to intercom on the left side. If you have the proper Charisma skills, you can persuade them to let you in.

If you fail the persuasion attempt, instead find the ghoul named Edward first and he'll tell you to meet him at Cabot House. He can spawn randomly at Bunker Hill, the Third Rail bar, or Dugout Inn.

Kick off this weird immortality-themed quest by accepting the job to track down a dead courier and pick up his serum. After the battle with the raiders, bring the serum back to start the Emogene Takes A Lover quest.

When Edward takes you upstairs, hack the computer on the back wall near the second staircase and read the entry labeled Patient Log S18. This entry updates the main Project Valkyrie quest In A Darkened Room.

Before you can actually get into the Asylum to meet Valkyrie, you need to have Jack unlock the doors. Keep completing tasks for Edward until you finally reach the Secret Of Cabot House quest. During that quest, Jack will unlock the Asylum.

Once inside, make sure to help Jack unlock the doors and activate the elevator, or you can get permanently stuck in the basement with no way to leave after finding Valkyrie. The only way to leave the building at that point is to use console commands to warp to a new location.

In A Darkened Room

For this first quest of Project Valkyrie, travel to the Parsons State Insane Asylum at the northeast end of the map.

Valkyrie herself is found in a locked room in the basement (you have to travel through the gap between walls and jump down the giant hole to reach this area).

Access Nurse Deesil's terminal to unlock the door, and then leave the Asylum. Note that have to actually walk by the front door to the Asylum to trigger the end of the quest, so just warping out isn't immediately helpful unless you walk back.

Be sure to talk to Valkyrie to get a dose of super charged Serum (and to give her some clothes and a weapon)!

Malpractice

Talk to Valkyrie again and ask how you can help to kick off the Malpractice quest, which will have you traveling to different medical centers in search of answers.

Travel to the Medford Memorial Center, which is directly next to the Malden Center station and southwest of Greentop Nursery. This area is filled with suicide bombing super mutants, so you'll want to wear your power armor. Pick the master locked door and head up to the top section to access the terminal and find out about Valkyrie's abduction.

Next, travel to Kendall Hospital (north of the Institute and east of Cambridge Police Station). Be ready for raiders and deathclaws! In the basement, look for a terminal behind a giant hole in the wall and read the notes.

Finally, go to Mass Bay Medical (southeast of Vault 114 and Swan's Pond). Head up towards the top of the area and look for a back room with a terminal located above the power armor station. Read through those files to find out how Valkyrie was kidnapped.

Heir To The Throne

Anytime after reading the final terminal in the previous quest, talk to Valkyrie again and ask for another job to start this quest line.

Head to Back Street Apparel and look for the blue door labeled Valkyrie's Apartment (right next to Club Snuggle). Pick the novice lock and head inside to raid the apartment, which has work benches, a power armor station, and can now serve as your home.

Grab the Note From Vanessa on the dresser chest in the bedroom and then talk to Valkyrie again. Travel to the USAF Satellite Station (southeast of Robotics Disposal Ground).

Be on the lookout for laser tripwires in here! Talk to the H.A.L.L.Y robot to get the Liberty Prime overwrite codes and then grab the shipping receipt off the dead body. Talk to Valkyrie again to complete the quest.

From this point onward, Valkyrie will offer repeatable side quests if you initiate dialog.

Wag The Dog

This quest intersects with the Brother Of Steel end game state and sees you taking over control of the faction. Its best to start this quest after completing the vanilla Show No Mercy quest so Liberty Prime is already re-assembled.

With the Liberty Prime override codes in hand, travel to the B.O.G. Bunker south of Oberland Station and chat up Fiona McBride in the lounge area of the sub-level.

Talk to the kid named Owen in the next room and take him to the safe house marked on your map (and for the love of God, don't give that child a mini-gun when he asks for one). Talk to Owen's mom -- who it turns out is none other than Sarah Lyons -- and then fight off the Brotherhood invaders.

Read the info on the terminal and talk to Sarah again, then follow the map markers to kill the Brotherhood members. Read the note labeled Orders From Kells and then show it to Owen's mom.

Deal with the Brotherhood ambush situation, and then press the glowing red button above the toilet to open a secret back room. Read the terminal and then chat with Maxson.

From there, its up to you whether to go the peaceful or violent route with Sarah. Follow her around and talk to Captain Kells and then Proctor Quinlan. Chat with Fiona again to finish the quest.

At this point you can now talk to Fiona to initiate the Peace Through Superior Firepower side quest... which has you recruiting Liberty Prime as a companion.

Yes, the insane Democracy-spreading robot Liberty Prime is now your companion. Have fun annihilating the wasteland! Obviously he can't enter buildings however, so he'll hang around outside when you enter an interior area.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised

For the final main quest of Project Valkyrie, talk to Sarah again and then go chat with Carter at Club Snuggle next to Valkyrie's apartment.

This quest has you taking control of the Institute, so its best to start before fully completing the main Institute quest lines of the vanilla game.

Fast travel to Hubris Comics and follow the map markers to get the teleporter gun components, then take them back to Carter Beckett. Walk to the pinup room in the basement of Club Snuggle and talk to Dr. Zimmer, then return to Carter again.

Go inside the Institute and load the holotape into the terminal in  Dr. Ayo's room. With the teleporter gun equipped, initiate conversation with Clayton Holdren and decide whether to kill him or teleport him elsewhere. Repeat this process with Isaac Karlin and Alana Secord, then go back and talk to Carter again.

Now just follow the quest markers to talk to Sawyer, Sarah, Desdemona, and Preston to take control of the Institute (if you really hate Preston Garvey, be sure to teleport him to prison). From here on out you can use the Director's room as your home base.

After completing the main quests, repeatable side quests become available by talking to Sarah, Valkyrie, and Owen, and by opening the terminals in each area of the Institute.

You can also now recruit the following new companions:

  • Synth Nate in the SRB Lounge of the Institute
  • Synth Gloria at the firing range in the Advanced Systems room of the Institute
  • Synth Nora in the steam shower section of the Director's room

What did you think of our list of Fallout major overhaul mods, and are there any we missed that should be added?

\n

Sadly, the options for Fallout 4 these days are still quite lacking. Total conversion mods tend to create much rejoicing and fanfare when they are announced... and then promptly fall off the map. It's not hard to understand why.

\n

These are huge projects, nearly the equivalent of a full game development, and when you aren't getting paid and just have volunteers working in their free time, feature creep and lack of drive kill a ton of total conversion mods.

\n

A few are worth keeping your eye on that may still arrive in the future, like Fallout Cascadia and Fallout: The Frontier. If those ever finally see stable, feature-complete releases, we'll be sure to get them added here.

Fallout: New California

\n
    \n
  • This Fallout: New Vegas mod arrives in October!
  • \n
\n

Now here's an oddity in the world of epic and ambitious total conversion mods: Fallout: New California actually has a confirmed release date for the full version!

\n

After starting life as Project Brazil and going through years of work, New California is set to drop on October 23, 2018. This has easily got to be one of the most anticipated total conversion mods for the franchise, with fully voice-acted characters and an entirely new story in a completely different location than the base game.

\n

With side quests galore and 16,000 lines of dialogue, expect to essentially get a whole extra New Vegas-sized game this fall!

Five Nights at Vault 5

\n\n

Wait, wait, wait -- there's even a Five Nights at Freddy's version of Fallout?!? Yes, there is, because modders are nuts (and awesome).

\n

Weirdly, it's not all that outside the lore of the universe either, since we know many of those vaults were specifically created to perform cruel and unusual experiments on their occupants, rather than just keeping them safe from radiation.

\n

Just like the franchise that was the inspiration for this mod, Five Nights At Vault 5 has you trying to survive from midnight to 6 a.m. while killer robots patrol the halls.

Hell on Earth

\n\n

The various modders out there are consistently able to take the Fallout franchise and give you something radically different within an overall familiar framework. Hell on Earth is one such entry, essentially giving you Silent Hill with the New Vegas style.

\n

This (not lore-friendly, obviously) mod has you traveling to another dimension to try to track down lost mercenaries who went to investigate a nightmare realm. Hell on Earth really plays up the dark and bloody aspects of the franchise and manages to create a survival horror vibe even when you are gunning down monsters with a laser gatling.

Alton, IL

\n\n

A simply massive addition to the Fallout 3 universe, this mod gives you an entirely new location to explore, quests to complete, factions to side with, voice acting, and more.

\n

It's essentially a completely free DLC location in the vein of Point Lookout, and is a killer expansion to vanilla Fallout 3. Off the strength of this creation, the modder actually got a job at Rockstar!

"},{"image":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_360,w_640/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/f/a/l/falloutzero-a9d54.jpg","thumb":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_85,w_97/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/f/a/l/falloutzero-a9d54.jpg","type":"slide","id":"184705","description":"

Fallout Zero

\n\n

Although it's a bit buggy and could use some more work, Fallout Zero offers an entirely new quest line for the Fallout 3 experience that takes place a mere two months after the Great War.

\n

What makes the mod worth installing is the amount of work that went into voicing the lines, all those extra quests, and the dialogue-over-combat focus. The reactive helmet that shows if NPCs will give up and join you when you point your gun at them is also a really nice touch.

"},{"image":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_360,w_640/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/b/e/y/beyond-e148c.jpg","thumb":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_85,w_97/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/b/e/y/beyond-e148c.jpg","type":"slide","id":"184709","description":"

Beyond Boulder Dome

\n\n

If you've already played all the New Vegas DLC and still need to get your Wasteland fix, Beyond Boulder Dome is where you need to go next. New areas, new weapons and armor, new robots, a cast of fully voiced and lip-synced characters -- you get a ton of extra content here.

\n

Weirdly enough, the story from this 2012 mod has a lot of echoes of what would become Fallout 4, with two warring factions stuck in cryogenic sleep and waking up hundreds of years later to a different world.

Fallout: DUST

\n\n

OK, so I fully appreciate that this may be an odd entry to include in a list specifically about not wanting a survival RPG version of the franchise, but it absolutely deserves a place here.

\n

Yes, DUST is, in fact, a survival rendition of Fallout: New Vegas. There are some key differences here, though, from what you can expect to get from Bethesda, and a few reasons why DUST might be more worth your time. First and foremost is the difficulty. DUST is unforgiving in the extreme, to a level we can be nearly certain Fallout 76 won't feature.

\n

DUST also includes something a bit different from the standard survival formula: insanity. Killing people, eating rotting flesh, and taking drugs for an edge in combat all take their toll, making this somewhat of a Darkest Dungeon-like take on the series, with a dash of Don't Starve. If you want to be challenged in a very different way from the base game, DUST is worth at least checking out.

\n

Wondering just what Fallout 76 might look like and want to try out something similar ahead of time? You've got your answer right here, although in what is probably going to be a harder, darker rendition. For another take on this idea, be sure to also check out the Obscurum - Pandemic survival mod.

Fallout 1.5: Resurrection

\n\n

Still got your old Fallout discs or have a digital version from GOG? It's time to reinstall because there's more for the vault dweller to do besides just haul water and find the GECK!

\n

Originally a Czech total conversion, Resurrection recently got an English translation and is well worth playing for fans of the early isometric titles in the franchise.

\n

Set between the events of the first two games, there's nearly 25 hours worth of unique content to play through here. The only downside is that the new characters don't have the "talking head" animations, so it does feel a little more static than vanilla Fallout 2.

"},{"image":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_360,w_640/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/m/e/d/mediahandler-e65a8.jpg","thumb":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_85,w_97/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/m/e/d/mediahandler-e65a8.jpg","type":"slide","id":"184698","description":"

After that divisive Fallout 76 announcement, fans of the beloved post-apocalyptic franchise may be on the hunt for more wasteland wandering beyond what can be found through official channels.

\n

Although it's possible we may be in for a surprise hit, the notion of playing ARK: Fallout Survive isn't exactly pushing the excitement meter into the red for a lot of fans (the only way they could have chased bubble-bursting trends any harder would be if it were a battle royale game).

\n

While several major total conversion mods have been announced in recent months for Fallout 4, they are likely years off, if they ever even see a full, finished release.

\n

There are still plenty of other ways to experience the wasteland without a proper, new single-player Fallout, though, thanks to the hard work and dedication of all the killer modders out there.

\n

Here we're rounding up 8 of the best major overhaul mods available that give you entirely new areas and ways of playing classics like Fallout 2, 3, and New Vegas.

What Happened to Linear Games? And Are They Due a Resurgence? https://www.gameskinny.com/in1ca/what-happened-to-linear-games-and-are-they-due-a-resurgence https://www.gameskinny.com/in1ca/what-happened-to-linear-games-and-are-they-due-a-resurgence Thu, 17 May 2018 14:43:47 -0400 Miles T

The gaming world as we know it today is a very different phenomenon than what it used to be. Today, a large proportion of video games are large-scale, open-world giants with a huge amount of content and massive time sinks for our limited daily hours. A lot of games releasing can average roughly around 30-40 hours of playtime minimum to witness and complete the majority of the their content, and some can frequently eclipse 80-100 hours. While this may seem initially fantastic -- and for many people, it really is -- for others like myself, it’s starting to take a real toll on my enjoyment and satisfaction from playing, despite offering exceptional value for the price.

Most games now are behemoths, requiring a huge amount of commitment of both our time and our energy. Frequently requiring us to dedicate our restricted number of leisure hours, they can be a daunting demand in comparison to a few years ago, a period when games could be enjoyed more leisurely and with less required of us to embrace them. I wanted to explore this shift in how current-gen games have a vastly different design compared to previously, and see if we may be due a resurgence for shorter, more compact and more compelling experiences than we are being exposed to presently.

The Established Norm

The years between 2007-2013 saw the linear, roughly 8-12 hour video game reach its established peak. Coming fresh off of the heels of the goliath which was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, the PS3 and Xbox 360 era saw the release of an incredible roster of tight, compact, and relatively short video game experiences. In the span of these six years, we were delivered remarkable adventures in the shape of the BioShock franchise, various Call of Duty campaigns, the Killzone series, God of War 3, the Uncharted series, and even underappreciated gems, such as Vanquish and Spec Ops: The Line, to name but a few.

The end of this time period also saw some of these franchises arguably reach their narrative climax. Take the universally glowing reputation that World at War’s campaign received, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves being considered one of the best games of its generation, BioShock: Infinite with its unforgettable twist ending. Excluding their multiplayer and co-op components for a moment, these games delivered a linear structure of single-player action that I don’t personally feel has been matched since. I still distinctly remember *that* reveal moment at the end of Spec-Ops, so integral to its core concept it was woven into the fabric of its run-time. We as a community still get goosebumps from the simple phrase of “Would you kindly?” and how it dramatically altered our perception of video game autonomy. Even looking towards the hype around Halo 3 to "Finish the Fight" or the moment Dom sacrificed himself in Gears of War 3these were emotive moments that resonate even more strongly because we weren’t bombarded with fluff; we were given handcrafted moments to fondly remember.

My point is, these games reached the height of their success because of the work and love that was invested into their single-player campaigns. They were relatively short, but they were packed to the rafters with quality and care. Many of these games held as many intimate moments of reflection as they did blockbuster, screen-bursting action sequences. The pacing of the moment-to-moment story was perfected, the development of heroes or villains was rich, the enjoyment of their sequences was unmatched. Then, built on the shoulders of these excellent games came one of the pinnacles of the linear, story-driven experience: The Last of Us.

Each of these games was more than worth the price of admission at the time, usually around $50-$60. They created emotional connections, characters we cared about, and story endings we yearned to see but were disappointed to witness end. Metal Gear Solid 4 was a game that defined the previous generation of consoles for me; it's one of my favorite video games of all time, and at one point, I had finished it on the hardest difficulty in under 4 hours, having replayed it almost 14 times.

So what changed in the intervening period between 2013-2017? Open-world and large-scale video games had definitely existed before then, and arguably, there were even more substandard games then there are now. Some games breaking the 100+ hour mark for completion wasn’t particularly novel, either. However, I believe these were the years that defined the shift from focused, single-player experiences with limited time requirement to the expansion of games in size, costs, and in some cases, even quality.

The Rise of Open World

The release of Fallout 3, which was to be followed by the seismic The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, put into motion the early changing of the metaphorical guard from the aforementioned linear video game into the new, altogether larger, open-world paradigm of video game design. With developers such as Ubisoft and EA seeing the power of the new generation of consoles, bigger and shinier became the new order of the day. Open-world games appeared to flood into the market from 2014 onwards.

Watch_Dogs 1 & 2, The Division, The Witcher 3, Assassin’s Creed: Unity, Syndicate and Rogue, Grand Theft Auto V, Far Cry 4, Dying Light, Mad Max, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, No Man’s Sky. The list could reach unfathomable lengths. Established open-world franchises flourished as gamers flocked to pick up the next release, clamoring to get the most content for our hard-earned cash. Even traditional series, such as Metal Gear Solid and Ghost Recon weren’t immune to the lure of the open-world design, with The Phantom Pain and Wildlands pursuing this endeavor with differing success. The scale and sheer level of adoration of huge video game landscapes can also be reflected in the game of the year contenders of the last few years: Horizon Zero Dawn, Fallout 4, Assassin’s Creed: Origins, The Witcher 3: Wild HuntThe Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, The Phantom Pain, Final Fantasy XV, and Batman: Arkham Knight were all frequently discussed and deemed worthy of the accolade.

This dramatic change in the way developers approached delivering video games to their audience has been negotiated from a few different perspectives. For example, a larger, more expansive and open map allows for more gameplay opportunities and mission variety. It’s far easier to pack smaller and larger tasks into an overarching map than have to create each one individually within a particular level or restrictive segment. Additionally, the rise in developing, creating, and producing games has been increasing as the popularity of the industry has skyrocketed. Games are now multi-million dollar investments, which means publishers were looking for methods to increase their revenue pool from each product. Open-world games therefore made more sense going forward, as they are much easier to monetize and create paid short-cuts for. The final point I’m going to explore is the notion that linear games and single-player experiences simply became unpopular, no longer the golden child of the industry.

Filling the Quantity With Actual Quality

While many of the previously mentioned game of the year contenders have been outstanding in their own right, with some of them even being a part of my contenders for best games of all time, this shift in design has also brought with it a multitude of issues. The first and most notable problem for me has been the gluttonous implementation of filler content: huge, expansive maps covered in needless icons, utterly pointless and unsatisfying collectibles, side content relying on depressingly boring fetch quests or menial tasks. Grinding has become part of the regular game experience now, filling XP bars to unlock inorganic skill trees. While not as prominent in something like Breath of the Wild or The Witcher, filler content has decimated the enjoyment of potentially excellent games like Watch_Dogs or Wildlands, with some of the worst offenders being Assassin’s Creed Unity and Rogue (really, 200 animus fragments?!). Unnecessary padding had been prevalent in many games beforehand, but the alarming increase in the frequency of it being used had certainly been noticeable.

It would be a fair accusation to say that much of the side material developed for these gargantuan games is largely blubber, the majority proving to be cheaply and sloppily executed. Sadly, this created the significant problem of games having artificially inflated run-times, where the meat and satisfactory course of the main game remain relatively short but are buffered by all the unnecessary busywork. The main story then started to suffer as result -- it’s hard to take the end of the world or the hero’s quest to save a realm seriously when you can run around for 3 hours collecting feathers or completing odd jobs for random NPCs. Who could forget the infamous fetch quest from Dying Light that tasked players with the heroic and immediately urgent task of ... gathering coffee beans.

Personally, I found this busywork started to break my immersion in the world and my empathy with the core cast. For example, when returning to the main quest line in AC: Origins, I could sometimes have forgotten which major figures I was undertaking my Medjay work for by the time I’d finished clearing out those 10 extra side quests I’d unlocked. All of this was relatively forgivable at first; the odd, boring side experience in Fallout 3 or The Witcher could sometimes emphasize just how fantastic much of the content was. But in games like Shadow of War or Wildlands, they’re forced into the main path of progression and diminish what would otherwise have been a compelling experience. This is where I feel the loss of linear experiences hindered some of these more recent games, detracting from the quality of their core gameplay loop and integral story.

An Open World, an Open Wallet

Filler content didn’t prove to just be a bane towards our time, however; it also became the means through which many of these open-ended and large-scale games began to monetize their designs, alongside multiplayer components. Some means through which games inflated their length was to utilize XP bars, experience points, and branching skill trees that could fill multiple screens. These were far less prominent in the years prior to 2013 -- especially in single-player campaigns for the FPS and third-person action-adventure genres.

The increase in their use allowed the development of microtransactions to speed up player’s progression -- XP boosts, in-game currency double earnings, purchasing top-tier weapons through pre-order deals, or in-game stores all started to become frequent. Normal. Expected. The casual player with extra disposable income had the means at their fingertips (or credit card) to buy their way through the unfulfilling side content. No game in the last few years better exemplified this than Shadow of War, whose final act for many players was a tedious chore to play through, suspiciously designed to cater to those who were willing to unlock their bank account for a quicker ride through. It undercut its core gameplay and diminished people’s satisfaction with what would otherwise have been a brilliant experience.

While it may have made sense from a business perspective for companies to pursue this form of design, it created sandboxes devoid of interesting, quality moments. So many forgettable quests, lost opportunities, and miserable grinding just to reach the next section we actually wanted to see. As a trend, microtransactions are showing little sign of truly slowing down their march, so open-world time-sinks are likely to continue to be the flavor of the day so that some developers can continue to hoover up their profits.

So Linear, So Mainstream

Another reason for why we witnessed an influx in overly indulgent game design around this period was the interesting change in players' expectations and desires from their standard video game experience. Around the time of Skyrim’s release, people became dissatisfied with 8-10 hour, highly structured and restrictive games. Call of Duty single-player offerings became criticized for being too scripted, repeating obvious and done-to-death set pieces, offering bombastic action that had lost its luster because of a lack of agency and choice. Gamers became disillusioned with corridor shooters, funneled action games and bottleneck entertainment that offered little variety. Generally, the linear video game became stale, lacking the fresh ideas that revolutionized the gaming industry and catapulted them to be king of the hill.

People wanted vast landscapes, freedom of choice in gameplay, and a more casual-friendly sense of easy progression through a video game’s content. It became mainstream to pour vitriol on yet another "Halo clone" or "wannabe Call of Duty," to the extent that many players no longer wished to pursue traditional games. With this in mind, it was the perfect opportunity for teams to create a new “norm” -- and so began the shift in focus.

Freedom of choice and autonomy to play the way we wanted became powerful selling statements on the backs of boxes. Series like Far Cry and singular games like No Man’s Sky offered us a previously unimaginable level of immersion and belief in our own ability to control our fate. It was the perfect foil for the tightly woven and restrictive games that had dominated before them. Pouncing on this newly discovered popularity, open-world games surged to the top of charts and received rave reviews.

Nowadays, we can see that much of this notion of autonomy became something of an illusion. Sure you can take any means of transport to attack an outpost in Wildlands, but why would you when the ground vehicles handle horribly and a helicopter gets you there 10x faster? Of course you can ignore all of these monotonous side quests, but what if I lose out on all the best items in the game? Absolutely, I could choose to scout out a location before laying siege in Mad Max, but what’s the point when it all plays out the same way as it would by steamrolling straight in? This conflict in the game's marketing versus its actual offering created experiences with a void of real engagement. You have choice, but it's an artificial, largely meaningless choice, initially promising but over an extended time, devolving into routine.

Are We Due an Influx of Smaller, Linear Games Again?

Moving into 2018, we’ve already seen a couple of hugely ambitious, time-consuming games be released: Monster Hunter: World and Far Cry 5. What we have also seen, though, has been a weariness towards massive games, with some signs that the linear, more compact model may be finding its audience again.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was a phenomenal game that took 6-7 hours to complete, one of my contenders for the best game of 2017. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy demonstrated there is still demand, ideas, and quality for the more streamlined experience (excluding chapter 4) that had been opened up somewhat in Uncharted 4. Episodic and story-exclusive games have risen from nearly non-existent to being a prominent genre in the current market, thanks to the appeal and intrinsic quality from titles like Life Is Strange, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, What Remains of Edith Finch, and many more. We’ve also seen a slight scaling back from traditional open worlds into more refined, open-area focused design, a la the new God of War or NieR: Automata. Resident Evil 7 proved a huge return to form for Capcom, dropping the bloated campaigns of RE6 for a much more deep, nuanced, and terrifying survival-horror experience. Quality and meaning are beginning to find their way back into the medium, and developers are being encouraged to make games that don’t just drain our time but make those spent hours rewarding and satisfying again.

Given the massive shift that occurred in the years between 2013 and 2018, it’s unlikely we’re suddenly going to see a monumental change to the ratio of open-world versus linear games. The extraordinary rise in the level of microtransactions, the ease of creating expansive landscapes with reused assets, and the demand for more casual and approachable progression systems means we will still be forced to endure some games that treat our time as frivolous and expendable.

Finding That Middle Ground

There’s genuine hope for the future and the horizon we have before us, however. Bethesda is supporting brilliant franchises in The Evil Within and Wolfenstein. Later this month will see the release of Detroit: Become Human. We’ve had remakes of classic shorter games like Crash Bandicoot and Shadow of the Colossus, with Spyro due for the spruced-up treatment this year. Call of Duty returned to its narrative roots after the more open-ended Infinite Warfare with WWII. There appears to be demand for the return to the older form of video game, and I think that’s fantastic.

Sometimes, it’s nice to be able to sit down, play a game over a weekend, polish it off, and move on, fondly remembering the brief and exciting time you had with it before progressing on to the next in the long backlog of games. Never overstaying their welcome, they allow developers to craft a well-paced, enthralling game that never insists on making you do things that simply aren’t fun. There’s absolutely a place for massive, extraordinary games that ask you to plow over 50 hours into them -- just see Persona 5 as an example. But sometimes it’s great to have a game which doesn’t require you to put dozens of hours into it to get the full experience.

With Red Dead Redemption 2 around the corner and more AAA games looking to deliver that bang for our money, I hope the industry can find its equilibrium. Too many of either form of video game, or too much emphasis upon one genre, causes over-saturation and a diminishing sense of enjoyment. The gaming world needs variety; it needs linear, story-focused and single-player experiences just as much as it needs another Grand Theft Auto or Far Cry.

It may not necessarily be where the money or the hype is, but it may just be where an audience including myself finds ourselves getting enveloped in memorable narratives all over again. Now, would you kindly grab that controller and get playing?

Pre-War Pets

\n

Adding in a way to make your pre-war home a little more inviting, this simple mod allows you to add as many dogs or cats as you want during the early segment of Fallout 4, before the bombs start to drop.

\n

Have fun playing with all the little furry friends before the world goes to hell and Shaun gets kidnapped by a futuristic institute of synthetic beings.

\n

Of course, all those creatures you summon will horribly die about 10 minutes in, but that's par for the course in the Fallout universe.

Wasteland Pets

\n

Get It Here

\n

A great option for when you don't actually want a new companion but just want the aesthetics of being followed around by animals, this nifty little mod gives you a nice list of creatures to hang out with in the Commonwealth.

\n

From those big, dumb brahmin to a floating bloatfly or scurrying molerat, these craftable pets will follow you around (including with fast travel) but won't interfere with combat or screw up your stealth attempts. Essentially, you can turn the Sole Survivor into a Disney Princess (or D&D druid?) always surrounded by helpful critters!

Fog Crawlers Workshop Pets

\n\n

Those weird, giant shrimp beasts from Far Harbor (that seem like they are supposed to be the aquatic version of death claws) can now follow you around after installing this simple, little mod.

\n

You can craft your own Fog Crawler follower at a chem station, then assign it to hang out at a settlement (if you really want that settlement to be a lot creepier). The mod isn't perfect, though, as the Fog Crawler is a modified version of a settlement structure, so they revert into odd shapes when dying.

Pet - Call - Feed Dogmeat

\n

\n

Having Dogmeat as your faithful companion is the iconic way to play Fallout 4 to match all the original promo imagery, but there are a lot of aspects about giving up your companion slot for a dog that aren't exactly satisfying.

\n

Making Dogmeat more like a real pet, this mod lets you call your hound from anywhere (no more wandering around trying to find the little bugger!) and adds in new animations and options for petting the puppers or feeding him treats that provide additional in-game buffs.

Beast Master Creature Companion Overhaul

\n\n

This fabulous mod works similarly to the previous one, but it's meshed into the existing framework of the game more smoothly and isn't so obviously breaking the core concepts.

\n

Rather than simply summoning a random animal companion, this one instead adds in a brand-new taming element where you have to capture creatures using the Wasteland Workshop mod's cages, then implant a control chip to teach them a language and give them commands.

\n

Frankly, I'm surprised this wasn't included with the WW DLC to begin with, and it's a killer addition to that side of the Fallout 4 experience.

Creature Follower ESP Version

\n

Get It Here

\n

If you aren't sure where to begin with all the Fallout 4 pet mods available and want a nice comprehensive option that offers a huge range of creatures as companions, this is the place to go first.

\n

The Creature Follower mod gives full companion dialog (minus romance of course ... this isn't a freaky animal fetish mod from Skyrim!) and the ability to summon 26 different creature companions, including deathclaws, yao guai, synths, mole rats, radscorpions, super mutant behemoths, and even a cat.

\n

Sadly, that last one isn't useful for combat, but obviously the rest are very viable companion options that will have your back when the raiders attack!

Oh, Fallout 4, why can't we ever seem to quit you? Here we are, closing in on three years since launch -- and more than two since the last official story DLC landed -- but all those fabulous mods keep us returning to the Commonwealth wasteland again and again.

\n

Bethesda knows what's up, as the patches for this aging game keep on coming. Fallout 1.22 (listed as Fallout 1.10 on PS4) offered up a curious entry in the patch notes, indicating that "pet support" is now being implemented.

\n

It isn't entirely clear yet what that means, but it's a good bet that we can expect a bunch of pet options to arrive in the Creation Club soon. If you don't want to wait for those paid entries to show up, the amazing Fallout 4 mod community already has you covered (as usual).

\n

In the slides ahead, we cover all the best Fallout 4 pet mods currently available that expand out your options for Dogmeat, or even let you recruit a wide range of pets, from mirelurks to death claws! Unfortunately, most of these aren't available for console, but where they can be found we've included links for the Xbox One/PS4 versions.

Destiny

\n

Destiny is a third person shooter, where you are trying to save the universe. Only, that's not likely going to happen with some of these glitches. One glitch that should have actually been in the game is glitch number 9, Fallen Skiff Glitch. That is a glitch would save so much trouble during story mode. Another crazy glitch is glitch number 5, Crazy Portal Glitch. This glitch was so bad, it managed to draw an audience from other players.

\n

---

\n

From the wacky to the beneficial, the world of glitches is almost as entertaining as the games themselves. What are some of your favorite glitches? Let us know in the comments!

Assassin's Creed: Origins

\n

Assassin's Creed: Origins is a fan favorite game with a storyline that is marvelous and full of adventure. These glitches add some much needed light humor to the game, especially with how they effect the player. GOLDTHEWRITER has the funniest glitch, with a two headed horse just sliding across the stage behind the player's character. Yet another horse glitch is by SUICIDE KNIGHT, with a horse is stuck in a river running in place.

Overwatch

\n

Now, everyone knows Overwatch is the game to play. It's a game that's fun, exciting, and frustrating all in one. These glitches are not only frustrating, but hilarious as well. Some of the best glitches are in the above video, and there's a definite theme to them. An example of this is the first glitch, where the character Tracer keeps getting stuck in the payload. Another glitch is with Mei as her character gets stuck mid battle. Funny for everyone else, yes, but definitely not something you want to be experiencing yourself.

Grand Theft Auto IV

\n

The best glitches are ones that make the game more enjoyable. These glitches from Grand Theft Auto IV are exactly that: so great that it makes you want to play the game just to experience them yourself. One example of an awesome glitch is when your character can glitch through the water onto the other side of the map. Or the incredible death drops from high places and the character, instead of dying, glitches into the ground or water. Even better, though, is when you glitch through a building with a helicopter.

Fallout 4

\n

Next is Fallout 4a post apocalyptic game that has mutants, bombs, survivors, and, of course, odd glitches that just make the game less serious. Check out some of these glitches that leave you scratching your head or laughing. This video starts off with the weirdest glitch of a character that should be running, but is swimming down a set of stairs instead, y'know, like we all do at times. Then there's another glitch of a torso squirming on the ground, when it should be dead -- but whether that's funny or just plain creepy is up to you to decide

Battlefield 1

\n

Battlefield 1 has its fair share of wild and unfair glitches, glitches that would frustrate even a saint. Of them all, the worst glitch is when the character is not responding, or then there are the general glitches in the system. One great example of this would be XSEVEROHATREDX. This player clearly had a plan that was ruined because of this nasty glitch.

The end goal for any developer is to deliver a clean, polished product to the user. But, as we all know, that often doesn't happen, with even huge budget games having a glitch or two. Many of our favorite games contain some...interesting glitches, some that add to the experience, and some that are just plan weird. To illustrate that point, we've compiled a list of the best glitch videos on the Internet from last year, all for your viewing pleasure.

Jason Brody from Far Cry 3

\n

One of my favorite tropes is when a renowned player, an exuberant party-goer, a rich son of a bitch, has a fall from grace and learns what it's like to live on the other side. The movie Overboard? Sign me tf up.

\n

Jason Brody goes through this transformation, but instead of learning to sympathize with peasants, he turns into a stone-cold killer. And honestly, he is the main man in my heart. I don't know why everyone talks about Vaas when Brody is the real crazy one.

\n

He goes from not knowing how to sympathize with another human being to sympathizing with other human beings and being a badass survivalist at the same time. He hunts tigers, fights pirates, burns fields of marijuana, all while saving everyone's lives.

Mike Munroe from Until Dawn

\n

All right, let's step back from the older gentlemen now (I refuse to use the word you're all expecting me to say).

\n

Let's showcase my boy Mike Munroe, who's kind of a dick, kind of funny, and a whole lotta douche. Half of the people who play this game hate him, and the other half hate themselves for liking him.

\n

But there's something to say about a guy who chops off his own fingers with a machete just so he doesn't lose the machete -- because anyone who balls that hard in a survival game deserves a place on this list.

Professor Sycamore from Pokemon X & Y

\n

I thought it would be funny if I added Professor Sycamore to this list, and I was right. I'm cackling as I prepare to write about the merits of this professor, all the while lamenting that people expected to see the shirtless wonder of Kuikui here, even though he's married and I can't bend the rules for him like I did for Marston (who's dead).

\n

Most everyone's love for Sycamore seems to be purely material: he's got a cute face, luscious hair, and a popped collar. What could be more sexy? (I hate that I just used the word "sexy" in relation to a Pokemon character.)

\n

Alas, people's love for Sycamore knows no bounds. Here's a Buzzfeed article professing love for this lovable professor -- and I honestly can't tell if it's a satire or not.

John Marston from Red Dead Redemption

\n

I know that, technically, John Marston is married and wouldn't be considered a bachelor, but that's not going to stop me from adding him to this list of "Gruff, bearded men with dark hair and guns who are considered sexy by at least one writer."

\n

There are only a few times I've seen a character supposedly considered an "expert" at guns actually live up to their reputation. And darned if Marston doesn't live up to his. I actually believe that he could hit a target with both eyes closed, and that belief has got me all twitterpated.

\n

Who cares if he's not technically a bachelor? If you want to get really technical, then nobody gets to love John Marston because he's dead.

Joel from The Last of Us

\n

Joel and Booker have a lot in common: a lost daughter, a surrogate daughter, and the voice of Troy Baker.

\n

Setting aside his tragic backstory and road to retribution, Joel also has keen survival instincts and a commanding presence that cause people to turn to him when they need help.

\n

Even though he's kind of an ass, his heart has the capacity to love, and as soon as he does, people don't want him to stop loving. Everyone is rooting for Joel; everyone loves Joel; and everyone is a sucker for a gruff, bearded man in flannel.

Booker DeWitt from BioShock Infinite

\n

Booker DeWitt is man with past mistakes and a never-ending guilt, leaving people with a desire to see him earn his retribution.

\n

Maybe it's the fact that DeWitt has a personality (as opposed to the other BioShock protagonists); maybe it's because of his interactions with Elizabeth; maybe it's the clothes.

Hancock from Fallout 4

I'll never forget my first step into Goodneighbor. My lingering resentment still strong from the revelation that Nick Valentine's epic buildup resulted in a 50's-style old-man detective, I take a step into this new environment, ready for my next mission, and suddenly a ghoul is shooting a man trying to kill me and telling me he runs the place.

When women have nowhere else to turn to find a decent man in their lives, they go for someone they always know will be there: fictional characters. Where are the scruffy gaming guys, the nice dudes, the sexy?

Right here. This list. Top ten. Let's go.

And with the popularity of del Toro's The Shape of Water spreading through the hearts of women everywhere, I probably shouldn't have to worry about putting someone like Bowser or Specter Knight on the list -- but, for the sake of all our dignities, I'll stick with the mostly human bachelors.

Faction Settlement Mod

\n\n

This is such a simple modification, but it can completely change the feel of the game if you find the Sole Survivor strongly allying with one of the big factions.

\n

The mod gives you a faction flag, which you can plant at any given settlement. Once there, the settlement will begin recruiting members of that faction as new settlers instead of getting random civilians. Now your towns and cities can be filled to the brim with the Brotherhood of Steel or Railroad members!

Bounties For You Mod

\n\n

Another mod that adds in a distinct new faction, this one is focused entirely on bounty hunting -- but you aren't always the hunter! While you can collect bounties for the faction, a new element is added to the game where bounties will be issued against the Sole Survivor if you break laws.

We Are The Minutemen Mod

\n\n

The thinking behind supporting the Minutemen in Fallout 4 is that having more connected settlements will result in a safer, more prosperous Commonwealth. But honestly, all it really does is tick off the player, with Preston Garvey constantly giving you new pointless quests to protect a settlement that can't protect itself.

Star Wars Faction Overhaul Mods

\n
Synth Stormtroopers / Imperial Institute
\n\n
Separatist Patrols Of The Commonwealth
\n\n

Rather than giving you whole new factions, these two Star Wars-themed overhauls change existing characters to place the Commonwealth in a galaxy far, far away.

\n

The first one modifies the Institute characters heavily, so synths and Institute scientists wear different varieties of storm trooper armor or various Imperial robes from the movie series. If you go hostile inside the Institute headquarters, get ready for a tense laser blaster battle (and yeah, they have better aim than in the flicks).

\n

The second mod goes back to the much-maligned Phantom Menace to create hordes of Trade Federation droids that patrol around the Commonwealth at random spawns and replace many of the Institute synths as well.

Faction Maintenance Mod

\n\n

A deadly tool in the hands of the uninitiated, this incredibly powerful mod gives you total control over the opinion that just about every single character or entity in the game has towards the Sole Survivor.

\n

Going way beyond just the primary in-game factions, the Faction Maintenance Mod lets you tweak settings on pretty much anyone, from super mutants to a companion you've ticked off. It even includes a bunch of extras from various other faction mods so you can tweak non-canon characters.

\n

Be careful when playing with those settings, though, as it can be easy to accidentally nerf the whole game or shut down entire quest lines when changing states on various characters, and there is a learning curve involved here.

Fallout UIF Mod

\n\n

A truly ambitious mod showcasing the great lengths this amazing community will go to in order to make Fallout an even bigger experience, this mod adds in a full fifth faction called The Union of Independent Federations.

\n

While the voice acting is frequently on the lower end, the fact that hours of new voice acting was added at all is particularly notable, as are the 20 or so hours of extra content added with new storylines, characters, and faction options.

Of particular interest is the focus on being a bad guy and taking the evil route while working with this faction, which the base Fallout 4 typically shied away from much more often than did its superior predecessors.

Even if you didn't jump on the Fallout 4 VR hype train, there's still a lot of life left in this open-world apocalyptic RPG for the average player, and even more so if you dive into the world of modding.

\n

One area where mods still haven't made as big of inroads as they have with many other elements from the game is in the faction system. Although there are a whole lot of minor factions like the Children Of Atom, Fallout 4 essentially featured four main groups that actually had a major impact on quest options and the story ending: the Brotherhood Of Steel, Minutemen, Institute, and Railroad.

\n

Here we're rounding up 10 of the best mods that overhaul existing factions, or in a few cases, even add in entirely new ones!

Due to the restrictions on file sizes and outside assets on the PS4, many of these are only available for PC or Xbox One. When individual faction mods can be found on consoles, we'll include extra links on each slide so you aren't left behind.

Fallout 4 New Vegas Total Conversion Mod Announced, Gameplay Revealed https://www.gameskinny.com/09z92/fallout-4-new-vegas-total-conversion-mod-announced-gameplay-revealed https://www.gameskinny.com/09z92/fallout-4-new-vegas-total-conversion-mod-announced-gameplay-revealed Tue, 05 Dec 2017 12:35:38 -0500 Luke Luby

Fallout: New Vegas is considered one of the best Fallout games ever released, with Fallout 4 also receiving critical and commercial acclaim. With both games being so revered, it makes sense that a group of modders would want to create some kind of crossover.

However, what is surprising is that a group of modders has announced a total conversion; essentially, they're trying to bring the entire world of New Vegas to Fallout 4. With the announcement also came a trailer showing off some pre-alpha gameplay footage, which you can see above.

In a blog post, the team behind the mod conversion has said:

"Our level design team on the other hand continues to work away at the starting areas of Fallout: New Vegas in and around Goodsprings. We’re quickly approaching a point where we hope to start showing off some very cool stuff - we’ve hit a phase in development where it feels like each passing day the Mojave Wasteland becomes more and more alive, and we’re really excited to begin sharing this!"

So far, there's no news on when the mod will be released, but going by the fact that the modders are currently only at the opening stages of New Vegas, it looks as though it'll still be a while before anything playable will be released.

"Games As A Service" Is The New Norm https://www.gameskinny.com/fdlu7/games-as-a-service-is-the-new-norm https://www.gameskinny.com/fdlu7/games-as-a-service-is-the-new-norm Mon, 06 Nov 2017 16:23:05 -0500 Luke Luby

There was a time, up until only a few short years ago, that game developers and publishers would create a game, release it, and then move on to the next IP. With video game companies being a money making businesses - or, at least, businesses that try to make some money and be successful - things are changing pretty rapidly.

Now, however, video games are seen less like a product and more like a full-fledged service. Instead of seeing brand new IPs being unveiled, we're increasingly seeing games that are constantly being updated, patched or somehow improved upon years after release.

And there's a simple reason for that: developers and publishers want to make as much money out of each game as humanly possible. So far, the list of ways developers can squeeze more money out of players is pretty limited, but it's increasing pretty regularly - loot boxes, DLC and micro-transactions are only the beginning.

And this "games as a service" isn't just speculative from the likes of critics and players, developers and publishers are eagerly embracing the term. For example, in Square Enix's most recent financial report, they stated:

"Titles that have become global hits recently have tended to be offered via the 'Games as a Service' model, and we believe this is going to be the mainstream model for gaming in the future. In developing future titles, we will approach game design with a mind to generate recurring revenue streams."

The statement comes on the heels of Final Fantasy XV becoming a "service" thanks to recent patches and DLC, with more on the way. The list of developers and publishers who have recently made references to games as a service is growing. Electronic Arts and Ubisoft also explicitly mention it in their most recent earnings calls -- and even those who haven't are still following pretty similar strategies.

This big shift was always inevitable. The video game industry is littered with the corpses of game studios that took the fire-and-forget approach. For developers, the best lessons are often learned once you’ve already shipped. Games such as Rainbow Six Siege is living, breathing proof of the concept working pretty well.

With video games that have a long shelf life -- and an even longer list of recurring players -- "games as a service" is going to stay around for a while yet. It's becoming such a draw that having a one-and-done approach is quickly becoming irregular for developers.

While this might be good news for some fans, it also has a number of drawbacks. The most prominent one being the fact that, as developers spend more time on games post-launch, they'll have less time to spend on developing new IP. Having new DLC, patches and more for the likes of Fallout 4 might be great and everything, but new projects might not ever get to see the light of day as publishers look to wring as much money out of sequels and DLC as possible.

One of the major drawbacks, however, could be the use of the 'games as a service' model to rush games to a release, glossing over bugs and glitches in order to make a deadline - some of the recent Assassin's Creed games come to mind. Essentially, developers know that they can release an unfinished, and occasionally broken, game knowing that patches will be released months later in order to fix said bugs/glitches. And this is where the only major concern for gamers comes into play. In many cases, players will have to wait months - possibly even years - in order to get the full experience of a game, as the developers originally envisioned for the game.

Whether the benefits end up outweighing the drawbacks in the future - as looks likely at the moment - players will have to get used to games as a service. If developers have their way, players don't have much of a choice, so better get used to waiting for the full experience of a game.

Idiot Savant is the Best Way to Play Fallout 4 https://www.gameskinny.com/ui2b5/idiot-savant-is-the-best-way-to-play-fallout-4 https://www.gameskinny.com/ui2b5/idiot-savant-is-the-best-way-to-play-fallout-4 Tue, 10 Oct 2017 10:17:02 -0400 Kengaskhan

No matter the RPG, players like to maximize their XP gained/hour, and Fallout 4 understands that – every point you have invested in your Intelligence stat boosts your XP gain by 3%, meaning players can specifically tailor their characters to earn levels as fast as possible.

If, somehow, a constant 130% (with 10 Intelligence) XP income isn’t enough, a character with 5 or more Luck can take the Idiot Savant perk, which can boost the amount of XP a character gains to astronomical amounts.

/u/minusra performed a very detailed breakdown of Idiot Savant on Reddit, and the numbers clearly show that the best way to maximize your XP gains is by taking the perk.

It's important to note that, despite the implication that you need low Intelligence to benefit from Idiot Savant, a lower Intelligence merely boosts the perk's proc rate. And given that Idiot Savant has no drawback, you will always earn more XP with the perk, regardless of your character’s Intelligence.

In fact, if you only plan on taking Idiot Savant I, the 3x XP bonus chance isn't quite enough to outweigh the benefit of having high Intelligence. 5 Intelligence may be the "sweet spot" for Idiot Savant I, but you'll gain more experience at 8+ Intelligence if you're willing to invest the stat points.

However, Idiot Savant II's 5x XP bonus chance makes those procs valuable enough that 1 Intelligence is the sweet spot -- you'll need 14+ Intelligence to outpace a character with only 1 Intelligence in this case.

If you're one of those players that loves watching that experience bar fill up over and over again, then the Idiot Savant perk is for you!

Hopefully that answers your question! Be sure to check out the rest of our Fallout 4 guides if you need more tips for enjoying your next playthrough.

Of course, there's a whole lot more available out there than just the 10 listed here, with plenty more creepy add-ons for all your favorite games available through services like Nexus Mods or the Steam Workshop. Minecraft: P.T. Silent Hills Map

\n

Download the P.T. Silent Hills Map Mod Here

\n

Five months of painstaking work went into creating this map, and man does it ever show! Some insane Minecraft fanatic recreated the legendary Silent Hills P.T. playable demo to inject some serious horror into the block building, open world phenomena.

\n

The pounding on the doors. The radio text. Absolutely everything from the (sadly) canceled Silent Hills demo has been lovingly recreated in pixelated form here. We might not ever get the full game, but this mashup experience is a nice consolation prize.

Goat Simulator: Slender Survival

Somehow, Slenderman has even managed to sink his fingers into the already-insane world of Goat Simulator, everybody's favorite dumb, time waster of a buggy tech demo.

\n

This mod puts you in a dark survival mode, with a Slendergoat chasing close behind. Couple it with the Goat Simulator first-person mod and you're basically playing Slender: The Arrival, just with a moronic goat who has no bones and can fly.

Garry's Mod: FNAF And Beyond!

Considering the whole point of Garry's Mod is to change and add in new things, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that there is a horde of horror-themed Steam Workshop add-ons for the game.

\n

Seriously, just hit the Workshop and randomly search for the name of any horror movie or game you can think of and something is almost certain to pop up.

We recently took a look at the best all-time mods for the hyper-difficult military shooter Arma III, and Baphomet proudly stands among them -- whether it's Halloween or any other time of year.

\n

Melding together the tactical shooter genre with a storyline akin to Hellgate: London, Baphomet has your squad battling demons and zombies in a fiery hellscape as the denizens of the pit have spilled onto Earth. It's legitimately creepy and a whole new way to experience the Arma franchise.

Crysis: The Worry Of Newport

\n

Download The Worry of Newport Mod Here

\n

This one deserves major kudos for drastically changing the Crysis base game, shifting it from a sci-fi action shooter to an atmospheric Lovecraftian horror game that's slow moving and all about investigation rather than running and gunning.

\n

The Worry Of Newport mod is much more focused on narrative and horror overtones than fast-paced gameplay, so if you dig the idea of playing through a book (or enjoy games like Myst and the 7th Guest, just scarier), this is definitely one to try out.

Skyrim: Freddy Krueger

\n

Download the Freddy Krueger Mod Here

\n

The illustrious Skyrim modding community has added in characters from so many other franchises that I doubt I could even find them all in a full day of searching -- let alone download and install even a fraction of them.

\n

But that means that horror- and Halloween-themed characters most definitely have not been left out, with the Headless Horseman and many other figures from myth and legend added to this open world fantasy game.

\n

However, one of the most bizarre (and kind of amazing) has got to be Freddy Krueger. I mean, someone clearly put a lot of work into this mod, even if it doesn't fit the game at all. It has nothing to do with Skyrim and is beyond lore breaking, but it's also pretty awesome. Go ahead and kill Freddy, loot his dream chest, and become the clawed nightmare yourself!

Skyrim: The Evil Mansion

Every time I think I've seen the pinnacle of what the modding community can accomplish, I'm consistently proven wrong by something even bigger and better than what's come before.

This latest jaw-droppingly awesome mod for a Bethesda game recreates the first Resident Evil inside Skyrim. Yep, all of it -- even the dogs jumping through the window in the hallway.

Skyrim: Epic Halloween Overhaul

\n

Download the Epic Halloween Overhaul Mod Here

If you only get one Halloween-themed Skyrim mod this year, this is unquestionably the one to get. It's got everything all in one bundle: new quests, new locations, and new skins. To top it all off, there are even pumpkin and Halloween light decorations placed everywhere to complete the vibe.

\n

Sadly, this mod isn't compatible with Skyrim: Special Edition, and it takes a little elbow grease to get working in the vanilla game because it's actually three different mod install files instead of one. But the results are well worth the work.

Fallout New Vegas: Obscurum Pandemic

One-half survival simulator in the vein of PUBG or Battle Royale and one-half post-apocalyptic horror game, Obscurum Pandemic is a total overhaul of Fallout: New Vegas in the truest sense of the term.

\n

This is an entirely different experience than what you normally get playing as the courier. The character creation and leveling processes have been radically altered, all the vanilla NPCs are gone, new warring factions are added, and monsters galore have now invaded the New Vegas wasteland.

Fallout 4: Pilgrim -- Dread The Commonwealth

\n

Download This Scary Fallout 4 Mod Here

\n

The only appropriate response to this overhaul mod is a simple Keanu-Reeves-inspired, "Woah." Pilgrim -- Dread the Commonwealth drastically changes Fallout 4's tone by changing up the game's color filters and weather, creating a dreary and gritty atmosphere inspired by horror flick The Witch.

\n

But that's not all. Everything gets a creepy remake here, from the terrain to faithful hound companion Dogmeat (who, for now, is just a bit scarier version of his current self. However, in a future update, he will be replaced entirely with the Satanic goat Black Phillip).

For the best scary Fallout 4 experience, combine Pilgrim with the smallest setting on the Pip Boy Flashlight mod and install the Commonwealth Connifers Redux mod for a more forested feel in line with the movie.

\n

While the Contraptions Workshop DLC added an ammunition station that slowly churns out ammo at a fairly high power cost, it isn't really an economical option.

\n

This Fallout 4 mod has been here all along, letting you do something that should have been there from Day 1: craft any standard ammo type at a chemistry station. So instead of throwing your junk away, download this mod for F4 GOTY and craft that refuse into something explosive.

\n

Stop slogging for ammo -- seriously. It's not becoming ...

Traits And Perks

Download the Traits and Perks Mod Here

\n

Miss the old style of traits and perks from the previous Fallout games? This recreates them in Fallout 4 after a fashion (and adds in new additions).

\n

While they can't be directly brought over to the new perk system with its unlimited level cap and new level S.P.E.C.I.A.L. screen without causing some major problems, this mod brought them back in a roundabout way using the crafting system.

\n

Now you just have to craft a specific type of item that grants you the new traits/perks, and you can easily remove everything to respec your character on the fly from the ground up.

For how often he appeared in the marketing for Fallout 4's pre-release, Dog Meat really didn't offer that much to F4 players when the game finally arrived. Going the opposite direction of the previous mod, this one gives you greater micromanagement powers -- and from a distance as well. Instead of having to manually walk up to any given settler, you can automatically assign them to a settlement object from a terminal.

Sim Settlements

\n

Download the Sim Settlements Mod Here

\n

One of the elements of Fallout 4 that was most touted prior to release is also the element that is probably the most heavily modded: F4 settlements. Although changes and additions were made with the game's official add-ons, there's still plenty about settlement building and settler duty-assigning that's pretty rough around the edges.

\n

Sim Settlements is much different from the typical settlement mod in that it drastically changes how settlements work, rather than just simply adding new objects.

\n

The goal of the settlements mod is to make it so you are the leader of any given settlement -- and not its micro-manager. The mod brings in "zones" that can be placed (in the manner of Sim City) that prompt your settlers to plant crops, connect water supplies, and construct buildings of a specific type.

\n

Every settlement will end up unique using this overhaul, and a progression system is added in so that building settlements is more satisfying and less of something you have to do every so often.

Full Dialog Interface

OK, so we've patched all the bugs and gotten rid of the Creation Club nonsense, so now it's time to fix Bethesda's other major Fallout 4 stumble -- the condensed dialog wheel.

\n

Half of the time the paraphrased example doesn't even really match the real dialog that's said. And there's no question the full voice acted main character really cut down on the dialog options in comparison to previous games.

\n

While there's not much to be done about the latter, the former is handily dealt with using this mod that changes things back to the classic Fallout dialog tree, showing exactly what will be conveyed with each option. Again, this is another essential mod for the best F4 GOTY experience.

Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch

If you've got a huge, open world Bethesda game, your very first order of business should be to find and download the unofficial fan patch. Like this one, it's guaranteed to fix hundreds of bugs, both major and minor, from small issues with items and dialog to big problems with quests and markers.

\n

Best of all? The huge number of changes are designed to be as unobtrusive as possible, so they don't ever break other mods or become irrelevant with new patches. This is essential download material for Fallout 4 Game of the Year edition.

For all those who avoided the full sticker price of a brand new AAA game plus the pricey season pass, your patience has paid off now that Fallout 4 GOTY is here, which bundles all the F4 expansions and the high-resolution texture pack in one place. (If you wait until Black Friday, I have a sneaking suspicion you might get an even bigger discount...)

\n

But if you waited until the Game of the Year edition arrived to jump on Bethesda's Commonwealth entry in the Fallout universe, that means you've got a full two years worth of mods to catch up on! Graphics mods, skill mods, UI mods, new quest mods, and (of course) nude mods -- there are tens of thousands available, and far more than any one person could ever even play in a single lifetime.

\n

So to get you started off right, we're rounding up a lineup of tried and true mod stalwarts that have always been Fallout 4 staples, as well as some newer offerings that will mesh well with F4's Game Of The Year edition.

\n

Note that these are all free mods, and unlike Bethesda we're going to actually call them mods. As such, we won't be listing any of the paid "not-mod" nonsense from the Creation Club (which is just paid mods by another name). Now that we've got that little tidbit out of the way, lets get onto the must-have Fallout 4 GOTY mods!

Doom VFR (PlayStation VR & HTC Vive)
\n

This demo was a ton of fun -- and easily the best VR game that was available to test. DOOM's graphics are really good for a VR game. And although the controls take a little bit to get used to, the game plays just like the console version that was released last year.

\n

When Doom comes to PSVR and HTC Vive, it will be about a 5-hour experience. The Bethesda representative I chatted with didn't mention any DLC, but this demon-addled shooter is definitely worth checking out if you own either one of the VR headsets it's been optimized for.

\n

Doom VFR releases for both PSVR and HTC Vive on December 1.

Skyrim VR (PlayStation VR &  HTC Vive)
\n

Entering the world of Skyrim on the PSVR was insane. Being able to take down enemies with a sword in one hand and burning enemies with fire in the other was incredibly cool while totally immersed in the world.

\n

The controls are simple once you get the hang of them. The VR version of Skyrim isn't as fluid as its non-VR counterparts, since the game's VR movement is based on teleports rather than walking. That said, swinging a sword and extending your hand to burn things was a lot of fun. And although using the bow and arrow did take some getting used to, I was able to get a few good shots in before my demo was finished.

\n

\n

The graphics aren't the greatest, though. Skyrim VR looked very blocky -- not at all what you'd expect from one of the gorgeous games released in the last decade. Of course it's understandable that graphics will take a hit in a VR port, this was more like a few uppercuts and a solid punch to the jaw.

\n

Is Skyrim VR worth picking up? If you like Skyrim and have PlayStation VR, sure. If you just want a new game to play on PSVR and don't feel that strongly about Skyrim, wait for it to go on sale or use the Amazon Prime discount to get it for a little less. I really wanted to be blown away by this game, but the graphics really impacted the experience.

\n

Skyrim for PlayStation VR will be released on November 17.

Fallout 4 (HTC Vive)
\n

This was one of the better VR experiences I was able to try out. The graphics for the Fallout VR port aren't on par with the graphics you'll find on console or PC, but they aren't as bad as the graphics in Skyrim VR.

\n

Much like its fantasy counterpart, Fallout 4 VR has you teleport to move around. Using weapons in the game feels smooth and natural, making for an overall satisfying combat experience. I would definitely recommend picking this on up if you have been wanting to get into Fallout 4 or love it enough to play it again on your VR rig.

All DLC will be included when Fallout 4 for the HTC Vive is released on December 12 of this year.

Skyrim (Nintendo Switch)
\n

When the Switch was first revealed to us last year, there was footage of Skyrim running on the console. But a port of Skyrim was never confirmed until E3 this year, when its November 17 release date was revealed.

\n

One of the questions that's come up frequently is: What version of Skyrim is it? The vanilla game, or the special edition that came out for Xbox One and PlayStation 4?

\n

\n

After speaking to the Bethesda representative, I learned that this version of Skyrim is more like the Game of the Year edition. It does include all DLC that has been released in the past but does not have the remastering that made the game look incredible for current generation consoles.

\n

Although I imagine this choice was based on the graphical capabilities of the Switch, the fact that this isn't the remastered version of Skyrim does show when you're playing on the portable console and hurts the experience a little bit. The graphics aren't all that great -- probably comparable to the Xbox 360 graphics moreso than those on current-gen consoles.

\n

But despite the graphics not being up to par, the game does run really well. It's smooth and has all the quests, exploration, and looting that you'd find in every other version of the game.

\n

If you enjoyed Skyrim on the other consoles and want to be able to play it everywhere you go, you'll probably enjoy the Switch version. But if you've never played the game before and want to try it out, I'd recommend picking it up for PC or a current-gen, since the Switch just doesn't do this game's beautiful graphics enough justice.

Doom (Nintendo Switch)
\n

When this title was announced at the most recent Nintendo Direct, I was shocked that it was being ported -- and nervous about how this game would play on the portable console.

\n

But after getting to see it for myself, I can assure you: DOOM plays really well on the Nintendo Switch.

\n

The graphics are comparable to the console version, but might look a little fuzzy to those who have played the game already. I played my demo using the Pro Controller, and it felt really nice. If you played the game on console or on PC using a controller, the controls are exactly the same -- so you won't feel lost when you play it on the go.

\n

\n

I made several attempts to get the release date out of the Bethesda representative, but she did not budge. I did, however, get confirmation that the game will include DOOM's full campaign and arcade mode. The multiplayer modes and every map released so far will be available as a download, and not on the Switch cartridge.

\n

DOOM will release for the Switch around the 2017 holiday season.

There's a lot you can get away with in reducing the coverage of underwear before actually being nude, and mods like this push that envelope about as far as they can go. Adding a few more inches of skin, these mods take out the straps from bras and undies, and also lower them to the nipple level.

The Real Deal: Nude Xbox One Fallout 4 Mods

\n

Yep, they exist, and yep, you can download them. Here's the thing: you can't search for these ones through the mod list directly.

\n

Posting up something obviously called a "nude mod" in the Clothing or Texture category is a surefire way to get it taken down immediately... but if you know where to look, they absolutely do exist -- and are even found directly on Bethesda's website.

\n

Head to the Work In Progress folder here at Bethesda's Fallout 4 mods page and search through them manually for anything with no photo gallery and no description. If you see something with an odd name like Cool3!~ you can bet you're on the right track.

\n

You'd best download those you find now, because its a good bet even these stealthy ones will get swatted down eventually. Here's the thing though... at this point it appears that even if Bethesda yanks a mod from the site, the files themselves remain on your console unless you choose to delete them -- so you can keep deleted mods forever.

Everyone knows that Bethesda's games have a gazillion or so nude mods on the PC, from bizarro festish mods to full on hardcore sex scenes crafted through the Lovers Lab.

\n

When mods finally came to console owners, the big question was... how do Xbox One and PS4 players get in on the nude wasteland action? Obviously Bethesda, Sony, and Microsoft aren't super keen on that being the focus of console mods, so they aren't officially supported.

\n

Most of the NSFW Xbox One Fallout 4 mods are very much in the PG-13 to soft R area, mostly just upping the scantily clad or sexy quotients. In the slides ahead we do list quite a few of those that just offer some eye-popping cleavage or a few extra inches of skin, as those slide just under the rules and are readily available to download.

That's not all that's available though. Yes, there are real, legitimate, actual fully nude Fallout 4 mods on the Xbox One, and and in the very next slide we show you how to find them!

Bethesda Softworks has announced that their latest post-apocalyptic RPG will be receiving a game of the year edition next month. Nearly two years after the game initially hit the shelves (and Steam's storefront), Fallout 4's GOTY edition will release September 26.

It will include all of F4's official DLC and content updates (most notably Survival mode and the hi-res texture pack) -- and of course, both PC and console gamers will have access to the all the custom content that the game's modding community has produced over the past two years.

The Return of the Pip-Boys

On top of the announced Game of the Year Edition, a limited quantity of GOTY Pip-Boy Collector editions will ship alongside the standard GOTY editions, which, among other goodies, includes a replica Pip-Boy.

The Pip-Boy Game of the Year Collectors Edition will be exclusively available in North America for $99.99, giving gamers a second opportunity to acquire a real life Pip-Boy on September 26.

\n

Console players, on the other hand, have been stuck with vanilla Fallout 4 for far too long -- and while I've sunk a good 50+ hours into the vanilla version, I still think its easily the least satisfying of all the Fallout experiences so far. That's where mods (finally) come in, providing sorely needed changes that Bethesda hasn't gotten around to making and vastly increasing your in-game options.

Unfortunately, there are fewer overall mods for the PS4 due to Sony's restrictions on external assets. But if you want to cheat your way through some of the game's more difficult battles, there's plenty of mods ready and waiting to ease the Sole Survivor's pain (and increase his ammo count).

Bethesda's Creation Club Is Setting a Dangerous Precedent https://www.gameskinny.com/jejx7/bethesdas-creation-club-is-setting-a-dangerous-precedent https://www.gameskinny.com/jejx7/bethesdas-creation-club-is-setting-a-dangerous-precedent Wed, 14 Jun 2017 12:30:22 -0400 StraightEdge434

During Bethesda's E3 conference on June 11, the developer made an extremely controversial announcement that this upcoming summer, paid "mods" will be making their way to Fallout 4 and Skyrim Remastered for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

If you've played Elder Scrolls on PC in years past, this probably sounds horribly familiar to you. Many of us shudder to think back to when Bethesda and Valve made a similar (and ultimately fatal) mistake back in 2015, after they tried to introduce a paid modding structure for Skyrim via Steam Workshop.

It seems like history is repeating itself.

When Valve announced that purchasable mods would be making their way to to the PC version of Skyrim on Steam, the backlash was severe. Modders and players alike completely shunned the whole thing -- appalled at the idea that of paying for mods just to enhance their game and do silly things like turning all dragons into Thomas the Tank Engine. In fact, the backlash was so harsh that Valve pulled the cord on the entire thing and issued refunds to those who had already purchased mods.

Why did players and modders alike lose their minds about it? The answer is simple -- up until that point, mods were free. And the typical mindset of those involved in the modding community -- whether creators or consumers -- was that mods should be free, because players have already paid their dues by purchasing the base game, plus Season Passes and DLCs. So why should they pay extra for something fan-made that enhances their gaming experience?

Mods are created by the community, and those that create them do it because it's their hobby. Modding is basically a pastime for most creators, and many of them aren't really looking for any compensation for the work they do. They welcome positive feedback from users, as well as donations from those who can afford to support them that way. But when an external publisher tries to take that hobby and try to monetize it, things start to heat up.

Paid mods were especially problematic for both makers and fans because modders weren't getting 100% of the money that was being paid for the mods they'd created. They weren't even getting 50%. Valve was taking a 30% cut, and Bethesda was taking another 45% -- leaving modders with just 25% of the payoff for a project they put 100% of the work into. The majority of players agreed that this was incredibly unfair, as Valve and BethSoft both were making money off the backs of passionate fans who were working for free.

So when Bethesda reintroduced the idea at this year's E3, a lot of people took up arms immediately. Just take a look at the Skyrim subreddit right now to see how angry fans actually are.

Is the Creation Club any different from actual mods?

If you look at the official page on Bethesda's site, Bethesda uses the words, "collection of all new content" and proceeds to describe that content as weapons, creatures, apparel, etc. So, how is this any different from regular mods? The truth is, it isn't. This "collection of new content" is just another sneaky way to mask the word "mods" -- because Bethesda for sure knows if it uses that word, it will relive the fan backlash from 2015.

In fact, Bethesda is trying so hard not to use the word "mods" that if you scroll down all the way to end of the page (the FAQ section), and take a look at the very last question, you'll see how desperately (and poorly might I add) the studio is trying not to call the Creation Club as mods. But the thing is, all that content that will be created by the Creation Club...that's the literal definition of mods. They are exactly the same mods that are available on Nexus, and in the game menus of Fallout 4 and Skyrim Remastered.

The only actual difference here is that mods created in the Creation Club are game modifications and enhancements which have been "officially approved" by Bethesda. They won't corrupt your game file, they'll always be compatible with each other, and they should function a bit more smoothly with the base game than the fan-made projects we're used to tinkering with. And you may still be able to get achievements and trophies.

Some of these mods will be created by Bethesda, while others will be created by modders who have partnered up with the studio. But the idea of a partnership raises a lot of questions for fans and creators alike. If modders partner up with Bethesda, does it mean that they're obligated to charge for all of their mods? What happens to modders who aren't partnered with Bethesda? What does it take to become a partnered modder, anyway? And how will all of this be regulated, since modding is such a gigantic realm?

Bethesda sure as hell isn't providing us any real answers.

The Creation Club is really nothing but trouble.

Besides completely shattering the idea that mods should be free and throwing a middle finger to all the modders who have provided amazing (and free) content to the community thus far, this whole Creation Club is a terrible thing because it could potentially extend to future releases.

As stated earlier, currently, the Creation Club will impact Skyrim Remastered and Fallout 4. But what about future titles? Will Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls 6 receive the same treatment? Chances are that they will if Bethesda has its way and convinces us to pay for mods. So if this Club slides by, we're likely going to watch the free modding community go extinct.

But there might be a silver lining somewhere. Maybe.

Though the Creation Club is receiving a lot of negative feedback from almost everyone -- as evidenced by the recap video's like-to-dislike ratio -- there is one positive thing that might come out of it.

This new structure could potentially be a blessing in disguise for PS4 users. As you may or may not know, the PS4 versions of Skyrim and Fallout 4 do not allow external assets for their mods, which is a fancy way of saying that modders cannot use outside elements (files not found in the base games and/or DLCs). With the Creation Club, PS4 users have the opportunity to download mods that do use external assets, and get the chance to have the same experience as PC and Xbox players -- even if it means having to pay for that same experience.

They want you to think this is different, but it isn't.

The Creation Club is the same thing that Bethesda and Valve tried to implement in 2015. It's the same mistake, and it looks like Bethesda hasn't learned anything from past experience. Once again, modders and gamers alike are annoyed and furious at the idea of having to pay for mods.

Anyone who's taken part in the modding community knows just how much Bethesda has relied on them in the past -- for things like unofficial bug patches, textural enhancements, and more. Trying to monetize that without the community's input is a slap in the face. So there are a lot of questions that Bethesda needs to answer before its fans are going to swallow the idea of paying for mod content. And from the sentiments that fans have expressed so far, those answers better be damn good if they're going to justify what the Creation Club is trying to do.

As much as I love GOG and those handfuls of other smaller platforms trying to get their piece of the pie, there's no arguing that at this particular point in time, PC gaming = Steam. When the physical editions of huge games like Fallout 4 literally just have a Steam code in the box, it's clear who wears the crown.

That dominance is a double-edged sword, however. Having the biggest selection of titles means you also have the most games that aren't worth playing. Steam Greenlight acted as a sort of gate to that, ensuring only games that people really wanted to play managed to make it onto our hallowed PC platform.

Greenlight: The Snoozing Guard

Some really unique entries in the gaming world arrived on our PCs because of Greenlight, from the dystopian Papers, Please to the unique slow-motion shooter Super Hot to the genre-bending RPG Evoland and even the occasional novelty game with questionable replay value like Who's Your Daddy.

Greenlight was started with an admirable goal -- letting the community decide what it wanted on the Steam platform, rather than a handful of Valve employees whose tastes may not match yours or mine.

Of course, it wasn't always a vigilant gatekeeper. There's already a multitude of unplayable nonsense on Steam:

  • Half-baked RPG Maker titles that are unfinished or stopped working halfway through
  • "Early Access" games that will never see full release and are just a source of continual income from the gullible who lay down $50 for an unfinished demo
  • A horde of visual novels that are barely games at all and range in quality from pretty good to "are you actually kidding me right now?"

That problem is about to get a lot, lot worse. In a surprise move, Steam Greenlight has now officially been disbanded.

No new games can be added to the program and voting is suspended. The couple of thousand games that were in the program will be decided on by Valve directly in the coming months.

In its place, we'll get the new Steam Direct program, launching on June 13. The goal with Direct is to make it more transparent as to how games get on the platform and to address problems like developers releasing bare-bones games in order to farm trading cards for profit.

What a weird world we live in where THESE create financial incentives

Steam Direct Opens The Floodgates

Unfortunately, it seems like this "solution" is going to create an issue that's even worse. While Greenlight at least kept some bad games from getting through, the new program will ensure nearly anyone can release nearly anything via Steam.

Here's how the statement from Valve describes the new program:

The goal with Steam Direct is to provide an understandable and predictable path for developers from anywhere in the world to bring their games to Steam. With that in mind, we're making the process as easy and streamlined as possible.

A new developer will simply need to fill out some digital paperwork, including entering bank and tax information, and going [sic] through a quick identity verification process.

After completing the paperwork, the developer will be asked to pay a $100 recoupable fee for each game they wish to release on Steam. This fee is returned in the payment period after the game has sold $1,000.

In other words, anybody with a Benjamin can now release a game via Steam. No more community gateway. No more having to get votes through the strength of your game's concept. Want to release Super Slow Motion Grapefruit Simulator? Cool, just hand over that hundo.

Yes, this is the face you should be making about Steam Direct

So long as it launches and doesn't install malware, any game at all is now in. We are about to see a storm of low quality, buggy, unfinished games from both unscrupulous developers looking to make a quick buck and kids who just picked up a book on programming.

Now, there is a slight catch there -- developers who have never released anything through Steam before will have to wait 30 days while their game and history is checked out, which means at the very least, there will be a delay before every RPG Maker project in history is suddenly available for purchase.

During that 30 days, Steam will "review the developer's information and confirm that we know who we're doing business with." Based on the description in the full press release here, it's unclear under what circumstances, if any, that a game would be denied during that review process, however.

Why Is This A Bad Thing?

"Well, so what?" you may ask -- why shouldn't every budding indie dev get to have their games on Steam? Two immediate problems come to mind.

First, there's the Steam sales issue. The Steam summer and winter sales are huge events where thousands of games have their prices slashed. Do you really want Stick Shift taking up one of those sales slots that could go to an actual game that you'll enjoy playing?

Next, we've got to think of signal to noise ratio. How many buggy games not worth a single dollar are already clogging up your recommendations or have to be scrolled through when browsing by genre?

The problem here with game oversaturation is discoverability: there are already more games on Steam than one person could ever possibly beat in their entire natural lifespan.

Good luck finding something worth playing in there!

Further muddying the waters doesn't help gamers find what they want, and it doesn't help developers make money when there are fewer and fewer ways to get noticed in an unending sea of games.

Completely removing any sort of quality gate is a phenomenally bad idea all around -- it's bad for Steam since it will undoubtedly increase refunds, bad for gamers who want to find games worth playing, and bad for developers who actually put work into their games and don't get noticed.

What do you think of Steam Greenlight getting replaced with Steam Direct? Are you looking forward to checking out more indie titles, or do you think it will result in more low-quality titles not worth playing mucking up your searches?

More Map Markers

\n

Get this Fallout 4 mod here!

\n

Simply placing more map markers to let you know where important events can be found (or fast traveled to and from) can make a huge change in how much you enjoy Fallout 4.

\n

This mod adds a ton of additional markers that pinpoint merchants, landmarks, unmarked dungeons, and other places of interest in the Commonwealth, all added in manually 1 by 1. Note that it doesn't automatically unlock these locations, so there are no spoilers and you still have to explore the world map.

Zombie Walkers

After you've played for dozens or hundreds of hours, sometimes a change of atmosphere is exactly what the doctor ordered for a satisfying Fallout experience. For a bit of a horror twist, this is a fun little mod to try out.

\n

Once again, this version of the zombie mod is a lesser rendition of the real deal due to Sony's mod content restrictions, but it does still significantly alter the feral ghouls to be more like a shambling horde of zombies, with headshots dealing much more damage than normal.

Legendary Modifications

Stronger Dogmeat

The faithful hound Dogmeat trotting alongside the Sole Survivor is an iconic piece of Fallout 4 imagery... but it's also total nonsense. Dogmeat is useless, and actually taking him as your companion is a laughably bad idea. Until installing this mod, that is!

Here you can make Dogmeat a combat force to be reckoned with, running through lobbed grenades toward super mutants with chain guns and having your canine friend still come out OK on the other side.

Quick Hack And Pick

Hacking and lock picking become half-second diversions from that point on.

Placeable NPCs

\n

Get this Fallout 4 mod here!

If you really want to take full control of building settlements, this mod is a must: download it straight away. This mod gives you the ability to spawn and place 450 different NPCs from across the entire game -- and set them as friendly.

\n

In other words, you can have Deathclaws patrolling your settlement, or if you want a specific item but can't find the vendor or merchant, you can just spawn the correct one right there in the middle of your settlement.

\n

You can also create themed settlements incredibly easy this way. Want a robotic town filled with Codsworths? Have at it! How about a metropolis filled to the brim with Diamond City security guards who defected to your side? No problem, just place the right NPCs!

Unlocked Settlement Objects

\n

Get this Fallout 4 mod here!

\n

Despite being a major selling point of the game and a core mechanic meant to set it apart from previous series entries, the settlement building in Fallout 4 is actually pretty limited.

\n

Modders have handily resolved that issue, however, and on the PS4, this is one of three major mods you want installed for maximum settlement control -- along with Scrap That Settlement and Placeable NPCs.

\n

This mod makes nearly every object in the game available for placement in a settlement, whether it was originally intended to be used or not. Basically, if there's an art asset in the game, it can now be used in your settlement -- including full, already-complete buildings.

Eli's Tweaks And Fixes

\n

Get this Fallout 4 mod here!

\n

Unlike most other mods, this mod doesn't make huge changes to settlements or enemies or give you overpowered weapons. Instead, it modifies a whole bunch of little issues to make Fallout 4 an all-around better experience.

\n

For instance, Bobbleheads are renamed so they all show up in order next to each other in your Pip-Boy, rather than being scattered around based on what attribute they modify.

\n

The weight of certain items has been balanced out better, too, and it also makes some tweaks to ease up a few of the more frustrating elements of settlement building, like lack of water and power.

Silent Protagonist

\n

Get this Fallout 4 mod here!

\n

Oh, my god yes: if you only install one PS4 Fallout 4 mod, this is the one to get. The Sole Survivor's constant chattering during any given conversation or while exploring the Commonwealth is enough to drive any vault dweller mad!

\n

I lost track of the number of times I had to hear "blah, blah, blah" when skipping a line of dialog. And with this mod, I will never, ever again have to listen to that nonsense.

\n

Many players also felt the fully voiced dialog for the main character was one of the biggest downsides of this entry in the Fallout series. And while it doesn't fix the annoyingly limited dialog choices, it does cull the vapid voiced protagonist issue.

Portable Nuka Cola Jet Pack

\n

Get this Fallout 4 mod here!

\n

While some suits of power armor can be modified at a workbench to add a power core hungry jet pack ability, it isn't really a reliable way to fly around the Commonwealth.

\n

This mod takes care of that problem by adding a portable jetpack that doesn't take up nearly as much weight -- or require that you be in a suit of power armor.

\n

This is one of those instances where Sony's restrictions on outside assets causes some issues, as the modder had to use an existing outfit, and the flame effect comes out of a weird location. But that's more than forgiven now that we have the ability to freely fly across the whole Fallout 4 game world.

"},{"image":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_360,w_640/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/c/o/v/cov1-0272e.jpg","thumb":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_85,w_97/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/c/o/v/cov1-0272e.jpg","type":"slide","id":"160975","description":"

There's no two ways to put this: the PS4 is the the red-headed step child of the modding community.

\n

Sony simply doesn't want to open its console up to potential exploits by letting modders add in their own assets to games like Fallout 4 or Skyrim, meaning the mod possibilities are significantly reduced from PC or Xbox One.

\n

Now that there's been enough time for a decent library of mods to build up, however, gamers have dreamed up some very clever ways to overcome those restrictions and still let you have a fun time tromping across the Commonwealth -- more so than with vanilla Fallout 4.

\n

With nearly 2,000 distinct mods now available on PS4, it seems beyond time for a new look at the best of the best currently up for grabs!
