Hopefully, you've got enough mods on hand now to transform any game in your Steam library into its scariest version!

\n

Of course, there's a whole lot more available out there than just the 10 listed here, with plenty more creepy add-ons for all your favorite games available through services like Nexus Mods or the Steam Workshop. If you can't get enough mods to try out this autumn season, check out last year's roundup of horror mods here!

Minecraft: P.T. Silent Hills Map

\n

Download the P.T. Silent Hills Map Mod Here

\n

Five months of painstaking work went into creating this map, and man does it ever show! Some insane Minecraft fanatic recreated the legendary Silent Hills P.T. playable demo to inject some serious horror into the block building, open world phenomena.

\n

The pounding on the doors. The radio text. Absolutely everything from the (sadly) canceled Silent Hills demo has been lovingly recreated in pixelated form here. We might not ever get the full game, but this mashup experience is a nice consolation prize.

Goat Simulator: Slender Survival

\n

Download the Slender Survival Mod Here

\n

Somehow, Slenderman has even managed to sink his fingers into the already-insane world of Goat Simulator, everybody's favorite dumb, time waster of a buggy tech demo.

\n

This mod puts you in a dark survival mode, with a Slendergoat chasing close behind. Couple it with the Goat Simulator first-person mod and you're basically playing Slender: The Arrival, just with a moronic goat who has no bones and can fly.

Garry's Mod: FNAF And Beyond!

\n\n

Considering the whole point of Garry's Mod is to change and add in new things, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that there is a horde of horror-themed Steam Workshop add-ons for the game.

\n

Seriously, just hit the Workshop and randomly search for the name of any horror movie or game you can think of and something is almost certain to pop up.

\n

Some of the best mods available include Five Nights At Freddy's, SOMA, Amnesia, and even Alien: Isolation, where modders have worked hard to make the models behave much like they do in their original games. Get ready to be terrified of a fast running Foxy all over again!

Arma III: Baphomet

\n

Download the Baphomet Mod Here

\n

We recently took a look at the best all-time mods for the hyper-difficult military shooter Arma III, and Baphomet proudly stands among them -- whether it's Halloween or any other time of year.

\n

Melding together the tactical shooter genre with a storyline akin to Hellgate: London, Baphomet has your squad battling demons and zombies in a fiery hellscape as the denizens of the pit have spilled onto Earth. It's legitimately creepy and a whole new way to experience the Arma franchise.

Crysis: The Worry Of Newport

\n

Download The Worry of Newport Mod Here

\n

This one deserves major kudos for drastically changing the Crysis base game, shifting it from a sci-fi action shooter to an atmospheric Lovecraftian horror game that's slow moving and all about investigation rather than running and gunning.

\n

The Worry Of Newport mod is much more focused on narrative and horror overtones than fast-paced gameplay, so if you dig the idea of playing through a book (or enjoy games like Myst and the 7th Guest, just scarier), this is definitely one to try out.

Skyrim: Freddy Krueger

\n

Download the Freddy Krueger Mod Here

\n

The illustrious Skyrim modding community has added in characters from so many other franchises that I doubt I could even find them all in a full day of searching -- let alone download and install even a fraction of them.

\n

But that means that horror- and Halloween-themed characters most definitely have not been left out, with the Headless Horseman and many other figures from myth and legend added to this open world fantasy game.

\n

However, one of the most bizarre (and kind of amazing) has got to be Freddy Krueger. I mean, someone clearly put a lot of work into this mod, even if it doesn't fit the game at all. It has nothing to do with Skyrim and is beyond lore breaking, but it's also pretty awesome. Go ahead and kill Freddy, loot his dream chest, and become the clawed nightmare yourself!

And if you're looking for more ways to spice up your Skyrim experience, make sure to check out our Skyrim mods page

Skyrim: The Evil Mansion

\n

Download The Evil Mansion Mod Here

\n

Every time I think I've seen the pinnacle of what the modding community can accomplish, I'm consistently proven wrong by something even bigger and better than what's come before.

\n

This latest jaw-droppingly awesome mod for a Bethesda game recreates the first Resident Evil inside Skyrim. Yep, all of it -- even the dogs jumping through the window in the hallway.

\n

Although changes have had to be made to fit within the Skyrim framework, even some of the puzzles and traps have been recreated. Seriously, just get to downloading this one already.

Skyrim: Epic Halloween Overhaul

\n

Download the Epic Halloween Overhaul Mod Here

\n

If you only get one Halloween-themed Skyrim mod this year, this is unquestionably the one to get. It's got everything all in one bundle: new quests, new locations, and new skins. To top it all off, there are even pumpkin and Halloween light decorations placed everywhere to complete the vibe.

\n

Sadly, this mod isn't compatible with Skyrim: Special Edition, and it takes a little elbow grease to get working in the vanilla game because it's actually three different mod install files instead of one. But the results are well worth the work.

\n

On the plus side, more content and updates are added every year, with the 2017 additions being worked on as we speak.

Fallout New Vegas: Obscurum Pandemic

\n

Download the Obscurum Pandemic Mod Here

\n

One-half survival simulator in the vein of PUBG or Battle Royale and one-half post-apocalyptic horror game, Obscurum Pandemic is a total overhaul of Fallout: New Vegas in the truest sense of the term.

\n

This is an entirely different experience than what you normally get playing as the courier. The character creation and leveling processes have been radically altered, all the vanilla NPCs are gone, new warring factions are added, and monsters galore have now invaded the New Vegas wasteland.

This mod will make you wish you'd never left the Vault.

Fallout 4: Pilgrim -- Dread The Commonwealth

\n

Download This Scary Fallout 4 Mod Here

\n

The only appropriate response to this overhaul mod is a simple Keanu-Reeves-inspired, "Woah." Pilgrim -- Dread the Commonwealth drastically changes Fallout 4's tone by changing up the game's color filters and weather, creating a dreary and gritty atmosphere inspired by horror flick The Witch.

\n

But that's not all. Everything gets a creepy remake here, from the terrain to faithful hound companion Dogmeat (who, for now, is just a bit scarier version of his current self. However, in a future update, he will be replaced entirely with the Satanic goat Black Phillip).

\n

For the best scary Fallout 4 experience, combine Pilgrim with the smallest setting on the Pip Boy Flashlight mod and install the Commonwealth Connifers Redux mod for a more forested feel in line with the movie.

Pilgrim is just one of dozens of Fallout 4 horror recreations! Want even more? Check out our full list of Fallout 4 horror mods here.

The glory of autumn has finally arrived, which for my family means an unrelenting onslaught of 31 solid days of horror! That's right, we only watch scary flicks, read horror novels, and play creepy renditions of video games for all 31 days of October.

\n

Sometimes that's a tall order on the gaming front considering the relative dearth of horror games in the gaming world, but those who are willing to try diving into the mod community will find that nearly any game you can think of will have some kind of Halloween recreation or scary mod attached to it.

\n

From truly scary total overhauls that add in completely new storylines to silly pumpkin skins simply added for aesthetics, there's something for everyone when it comes to Halloween mods.

\n

Over the next 10 slides we'll show you some of the best Halloween and horror themed mods currently available for the likes of Fallout 4, New Vegas, Skyrim, Arma III, Crysis, Garry's Mod, Goat Simulator, and even Minecraft!

Sonic Goes Allegro

\n
Mod: Sonic Background+music
Get it on: Garry's Mod Website
\n

What game is complete without music? This mod from jaidenjc contains the theme from Sonic and the Secret Rings, "7 Rings in Hand," by Steve Conte. It embodies the sound of the 3D Sonic games with its upbeat rock style and quick pace. It's perfect for any world you create in Garry's Mod, of course, but we can't help thinking it would fit especially well in the Sonic stage mod too.

The Romero Surprise

\n
Mod: Zombie Amy
Get it on: Garry's Mod Website
\n

If you're really looking for something out of the ordinary, consider checking out this one from Minimole the Lorax. Zombie Amy is pretty much exactly what her name implies: Amy Rose with a creepy Halloween makeover. Her pupils have vanished, and her overall expression is not quite so nice as Sonic fans might be used to. Her teeth are much sharper than usual, which probably goes a long way in explaining those rather disturbing bloodstains on her hands…

Eggbots in Disguise...

Mod: Death Egg Robot
Get it on: Garry's Mod Website
\n

How many times have you been able to play as one of Eggman's robots in Sonic? Exactly: none. However, suroguner's Death Egg Robot mod lets you do just that. Inspired by the difficult battles from Sonic 2, this version features a Sonic 4 style to choose from as well.

Meet the Badniks

\n
Mod: Sonic 4 Badnik Pack V2
Get it on: Garry's Mod Website
\n

Of course, any Sonic recreation or sandbox world wouldn't be complete without some enemies to topple. suroguner/Glabe's Badnick Pack gives you a variety of badniks from across a range of Sonic games, including the Buzz Bomber from Sonic Adventure 2, a couple of foes from Sonic Colors and the GameGear's version of Sonic 2, and many others.

Mod: de_Sonic the Hedgehog

Entertaining as it would be to add all these Sonic mods to any game, you just can't beat the original. FPSbanana created a huge map mod inspired by the original game's areas, graphics, and textures. After what's seemed like an eternity, summer has finally arrived. Sunny beaches. Scorching, hot weather. Family vacations. Weird tan lines.

\n

But there is another image that's conjured when talking about summer -- the Steam Summer Sale. Summer truly doesn't begin until the gaming community can buy some amazing games and other items on the cheap.

\n

The true pull for the sale is the incredible discounts gamers can get on some of their favorite games. There are individual games, expansion packs, DLCs, bundles. Any and everything a gamer could want or need is available with discounts of up to 80%.

\n

This is not only a big deal for the gaming community but for the online community as a whole. Articles, blurbs, and blog posts from indie sites to major players are written up days before the sale. Just like offline life, the internet goes crazy over discounts.

\n

Let's take a look at some of the best games under $5 for Steam's 2017 Summer Sale.

We started this showcase with a simple Gameboy Advance prop, but now we end on something a million times better -- a Gameboy Advance Emulator mod for Garry's Mod!

\n

From Steam user Kosman, this mod is somewhat self-explanatory. It allows you to emulate the Gameboy Advance within Garry's Mod. You'll need a legal ROM and .gba file. Once you have that, you'll need upload it to Dropbox and copy the link for it. Once in Garry's Mod, paste the link into the "ROM URL" box within GGBA and presto!

\n

So now you can download that Gameboy Advance prop from the start of this list and potentially turn it into a functional Gameboy Advance within Garry's Mod! You'll be playing video games within a video game. Talk about meta!

\n

\n

\n

Garry's Mod clearly has a thriving community and a plethora of highly creative content creators. Not only are these curators making adjustments to the mods they've already created, but they're also creating brand new mods, too. So be sure to constantly check GM's Steam Workshop page to see what's getting made!

This isn't just a prop, either; it's fully functional and can be used and operated with the arrow keys, and if you have turrets equipped, they can be fired with the numpad keys. All we need next are snow speeders so we can tangle these AT-ATs up, tripping them while watching the wacky physics shenanigans go haywire.

Left 4 Dead-Style Destructible Doors

\n

Have you ever wanted to host a game or mode on your Garry's Mod server then break down a door someone's hiding behind and yell "HERE'S JOHNNY!"? Well, now you can thanks to steam user [SW] Pépin.

\n

This mod is essentially a script that replaces every door within Garry's Mod with the doors found in Left 4 Dead 2, making them fully destructible. As you can probably already imagine, this has the potential for plenty of uses in different game modes, servers, or creating scenes within Garry's Mod itself.

Ever wanted to create a scene within Garry's Mod where your models or props are lounging around playing a GBA? Well, thanks to Steam user Spicey_Apples, now you can!

This mod also includes numerous GBA cartridges ranging from Final Fantasy VI to Fire Emblem. Yet oddly enough, Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire only have gray cartridges. Guess you'll just have to use your imagination for that one.

Rick And Morty Announcer Packs
\n\n

Considering half the draw of the show is just listening to Rick's insanity and Morty's not-so-sure-about-this responses, it was only a matter of time before somebody made announcer packs for various online games.

\n

Justin Roiland, the voice of both characters, apparently actually did these lines originally for Dota 2, and someone then imported them all over to Team Fortress.

With Season 3 coming soon, I wouldn't be surprised to see more games doing this. Adult Swim Games is also currently working on a Mr. Meeseeks courier for the Dota 2 Steam Workshop.

Fallout 4

Overhaul Mod

Get It Here!

This nifty little mod swaps out the intro menu screen with the Rick And Morty show intro and gets rid of one aspect of Fallout 4 that added absolutely nothing: the voiced main character.

Grand Theft Auto V

\n
Rick Sanchez Add-On
\n

Get It Here!

\n

I'm going to confess something that may not endear me to the GTA fanbase: I didn't actually really like part V.

\n

The heist system was interesting, and of course there's the absurd online experience that's filled to the brim with ludicrously amazing nonsense you won't see anywhere else. But I actively hated the characters this time around. A rich suburban white dude who turns to crime because he's bored with his perfect life and has annoying kids doesn't quite match the Eastern European whirlwind of destruction that was Nico Bellic.

\n

That being said, GTA V has seen some killer mods that give the game extended life and take it in new directions -- from a stunningly beautiful fan graphics upgrade to this crazy mod that lets you fly around in Rick Sanchez's spaceship and fills the game world with a whole council full of Ricks and their attendant Mortys.

\n

Yep, there's catch phrases galore, as well a rendition of "Get Schwifty." Just um, don't go to the strip club when you've got everything changed to a Rick. You don't want to have to scrub your eyes.

When it seemed like season 3 would never arrive and was lost somewhere out in the multiverse, the fires of Rick And Morty mania were re-stoked on April Fools.

\n

The crazy folks from Adult Swim decided to play the upcoming first episode on loop for 24 hours with the message "there, you can now stop bugging us" prominently displayed at the bottom. As I predicted back when the Pocket Mortys winter update arrived, we saw several new Mortys from the game appear on the show (did everybody catch Hammer Morty meeting his demise?).

\n

The rest of the season won't arrive until this summer, but you don't have to wait that long for a super schwifty fix of new darkly humorous sci-fi shenanigans.

\n

Various characters and voices from the show have collided with a wide range of games thanks to the glorious modding community, and today we're rounding up the best of 'em currently available. And awaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay we go...

Trouble in Terrorist Town

\n

Last but not least we come to Trouble in Terrorist Town, the game mode that can be simplified down to Traitors vs. Innocents — the Garry's Mod version of Mafia.

\n

A small group of Traitors is randomly picked, and together they have to kill the Innocents. However, the Innocents do not know who is a Traitor, and who isn't. Because they're vastly outnumbered, the Traitors must use this to their advantage.

\n

Traitors can buy special equipment and hide bodies. Some Innocents can become detectives and search dead bodies for clues.

\n

A team wins if they successfully get rid of all the members of the opposing team.

Divers vs. Sharks

This mod is for the aquaphobics.

\n

Divers vs. Sharks is a simple game mode where players are separated into two teams: Divers and Sharks.

At the very bottom of the ocean is a shrine. The divers are tasked with defending the shrine against the sharks. The sharks' primary objective is to destroy the shrine. Killing sharks gives the divers money, which they can use to buy more powerful and efficient gear.

These ten are the best Garry's Mod add-ons that you can download right now in 2015 from the Steam workshop. But the beauty of the game and its community is that there are always new, fun ones sprouting up, and even some that fly under the radar.

\n

If you know of any good ones floating around out there, please let us know in the comments!

10. Ak-47 Redline

\n

We're going to end the list with something we haven't featured at all yet, a weapon.

\n

The redline skin is one of the most popular series in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and now you can use it in Garry's Mod thanks to this add-on.

\n

Have you ever wanted to see the spy from Team Fortress 2 running around with one of these bad boys? Now you can make it happen.

9. Body and Loot Bags from Payday 2

\n

Need a place to hide all of those bodies you've been accumulating while playing Garry's Mod this year? Then check out this add-on.

\n

Pulled straight from the game, these body and loot bags look legit and make for the perfect props for any sort of bank robbery scene.

8. Kenny

\n

How many times have you yelled, "Oh my God, they killed Kenny!", in a minute?

\n

Probably not too many, unless you've already downloaded this Garry's Mod add-on.This player model is guaranteed to give any South Park fan a great time.

\n

Even though the quality of the texture isn't the best, it does take its queues from rough, almost unfinished look of the cartoon.

\n

Basically, this is a must download add-on for any South Park fan.

7. Batman Beyond

\n

What better way to follow up a Joker player model for Garry's Mod than with a Batman Beyond player model add-on?

\n

As far as models go, it does run a bit skinny, as do most Garry's Mod models, but apart from that, it captures the look of the cartoon very well. The glowing eyes and the spiky arms along with the red bat logo on the chest completes the Batman Beyond look, and make you feel like you're playing with The Dark Knight.

6. The Joker from Arkham Origins

\n

Bringing characters together in one scene from tons of different games is one of the best things about Garry's Mod, and high-quality player models from the Steam workshop like this one of The Joker make it easy to do just that.

\n

Modder Bobert has done a great job bringing over models from Injustice: Gods Among Us, but this one is probably his best. If you are into the D.C. comics universe and Garry's Mod, his page could be your new favorite bookmark.

5. Zer0 Assassin

\n

This player model with two skins (one based on the original model in Borderlands 2, and one with a custom color scheme), makes for a great Garry's Mod add-on.

\n

The add-on even comes with the swords from its original games for slicing and dicing some virtual vegetables, or other players, whatever floats your boat.

\n

The only thing missing from this Garry's Mod add-on are the humorous haikus that he recites in Borderlands 2.

4. Big Boss

\n

Metal Gear Solid V isn't quite brand new, but this player model for Garry's Mod is.

\n

Released in mid-January of 2015, this Big Boss skin lets Garry's Mod players create their own Metal Gear adventures.

\n

With three different high-quality textures, this add-on is easily one of the best on the Steam workshop, and is a must have for any Metal Gear fan.

"},{"image":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/f9b32262148278bcfd40ef8e2fead69c.jpg","thumb":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/tiny_f9b32262148278bcfd40ef8e2fead69c.jpg","type":"slide","id":"60893","description":"

3. Left Shark

\n

Ah, the meme that brought in 2015. Everyone was talking about the left shark from Katy Perry's Super Bowl halftime performance. So what better way to commemorate him than running around blowing stuff up in Garry's Mod?

\n

The player model fully captures the cuteness that captivated the Internet while remaining pretty functional, which is a huge feat.

\n

With this model, I think it's only a matter of time until a Garry's Mod halftime show video reenactment surfaces.

2. GTA V Cars

\n

GTA V might have come out last year, but this add-on for Garry's Mod came out in 2015, it features some beautifully textured cars that look like they drove straight out of San Andreas into the sandbox.

\n

Whether you are blowing them up or racing them, these cars are a lot of fun and make for a great add-on in Garry's Mod.

"},{"image":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/a43edb877a07c78ccda254bdf8b4bd4a.png","thumb":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/tiny_a43edb877a07c78ccda254bdf8b4bd4a.png","type":"slide","id":"60891","description":"

1. Portal Gun

\n

This gun perfectly replicates the gun players use in Portal, and doesn't even require that Garry's Mod players own either of the games that it emulates to use.

\n

There have been other attempts at this, but none of them has quite grasped the magic of that first time you jumped into that blue circle and came out in the orange.

\n

Not only does this add-on capture the feel of the original game, but it also looks pretty close to the original, earning it a spot at the top of this list.

Garry's Mod is a game centered around, you guessed it, mods.

\n

Built on Valve's Source engine and originally coming out as a mod for Half-Life 2, the game gives players full creative control over everything in the game's universe. Garry's Mod lets players do anything they want in its sandbox with a ton of premade materials and game modes.

\n

It also lets them put virtually anything they create or download into the game. With so many people playing and creating for Garry's Mod, it can be hard to keep track of the best add-ons for the game. So, here is a rundown of the ten best Garry's Mod add-ons to download in 2015.

A List of 10 Bang-For-Your-Buck Games to Watch for on the Steam Summer Sale https://www.gameskinny.com/tr7v0/a-list-of-10-bang-for-your-buck-games-to-watch-for-on-the-steam-summer-sale https://www.gameskinny.com/tr7v0/a-list-of-10-bang-for-your-buck-games-to-watch-for-on-the-steam-summer-sale Thu, 19 Jun 2014 18:44:13 -0400 Derek Paulus

The Steam Summer Sale is finally here. It is a celebrated time when gamers from all around abuse their wallets to purchase games they will play for 15 minutes before forgetting them forever to collect virtual dust on the Steam library shelf.

It doesn't have to be this way, however, and with some research and a little willpower you can restrict your summer Steam purchases to games that will keep pulling you back time and time again. Here are my picks for games to keep tabs on in this year's Steam summer sale that could get you the most for your money. These are either games that allow extensive gameplay, gameplay variety, have strong modding communities, or a combination of the three, regardless of whether or not they have yet been discounted on the Steam summer sale.

10. Garry's Mod

This is not a game for everyone but if you like a sandbox that allows you to create vehicles, flying machines, structures, and just about anything you can imagine, this is a game for you. Garry's Mod uses Valve's Source game engine to allow players to manipulate objects, meaning you can spend hours crafting and testing your builds.

Sharing items and downloading user-created props is made easy with the Steam Workshop. There are 342,165 entries in the Garry's Mod Workshop at the time of writing this article. If you get bored with the limits of your own imagination, you can always check out the imagination of someone else.

Additional multiplayer game modes are also available, with PropHunt currently being the top rated entry in the Workshop. "Trouble in Terrorist Town" is also a popular multiplayer mode that pits innocents against traitors, requiring social engineering to determine who is the traitor (or to convince others that you are not the traitor).

9. Fallout: New Vegas

This title almost didn't make the list, but after hearing so much about the endless playability from others, I felt it had to be included.

New Vegas seems to have a strong modding community despite releasing back in 2010. The game ends after the main quest is completed, so to get the most for your money, you will want to be sure to download a mod that allows you to continue playing even after you've beat the game.

There are also six inexpensive DLCs available right from the Steam page that can add even more gameplay.

8. Borderlands 2: Game of the Year Edition

What Borderlands 2 lacks in variety, it makes up for in length of gameplay. If you're looking for a roleplaying first-person shooter that provides lots of gameplay, this may be the game.

While the original Borderlands 2 provided under 100 hours of gameplay for some players, the Game of the Year edition has the potential to offer over 200 hours. With enough of a discount from Steam, this could be a no-brainer buy.

7. Total War Series

Pick the time period that best suits your interest and you will find yourself playing this game for a long time. If you prefer, however, you can purchase the whole series and play even longer if Steam offers the right price.

From Gamespy

Total War offers a single player campaign mode that can continue as long as you want it to. Hours will be spent managing cities, recruiting troops, entering diplomatic negotiations with other nations, and of course, testing your military tactics on the battlefield. If you conquer the world with one nation you can always devise new tactics and conquer with another.

If you need more of a challenge, you can hop into multiplayer and battle one or more opponents to really put your skills to the test.

Moreover, Total War has a healthy modding community, with the Steam Workshop also available for Rome II and Shogun II, allowing players to continually alter their play to experience the game in new ways.

6. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

This game is long. Mind you, the main quest can be completed in a relatively short period of time, but with the variety in character creation, the adventuring, the side quests, and the time you will spend just staring in awe at some of Skyrim's sight-seeing spots, it seems like this game could never be explored to its full extent.

Many mods are also available that not only tweak various aspects of the game to fit individual preferences, but can also add news storylines and worlds to explore.

If you want to take a step back in the series, Oblivion is also an excellent choice with huge amounts of gameplay for your money.

5. Arma 3

Multiplayer is where you will likely find the most bang-for-your-buck in this game, though there are many player created missions that you can download if you want to increase your single player experience.

If you don't like putting in a lot of effort (what can sometimes feel like actual work) then this is likely not the game for you. If you're someone who doesn't mind coordinating with other players and traveling to your mission objective for 20 minutes before encountering the enemy, then you will find Arma 3 can keep you entertained for hours at a time.

4. Don't Starve

Don't Starve is a unique experience that seems to offer players new and strange encounters every time they open the game.

As a survival game it is no surprise that Don't Starve has the potential to offer lengthy gameplay. What really keeps this game interesting, however, is that you never quite know what you will find. You're thrown into a world that you won't quite understand and seems to continually provide news discoveries, keeping the game fresh for a long time.

A free multiplayer expansion will be released this summer, further increasing the games bang-for-your-buck quality. It would be wise to purchase Don't Starve during this Steam summer sale, however, since the regular price of the game will increase once multiplayer is released.

3. X3 Series

This is not a title I have experience with but from what I have heard, it has tons of replay value. Despite being a single player game with a campaign story, it takes place in an active world where you can expand your space empire through military and trading. This is a game I will likely be checking out.

2. Dark Souls

Despite the second installment of this series being released only months ago, some players expressed the feeling that the original had more replay value, which is why this particular game makes the list. Even so, both games seemed to be praised for this aspect.

Steam offers the Prepare to Die Edition, which features an untold chapter in the story.

1. Mount & Blade: Warband

Warband released in 2010, yet it still seems to be as popular as ever. Much of this has to do with the game's modding community constantly finding new ways to reinvent the game for both singleplayer and multiplayer modes.

From Mountandbladewarband.com

The campaign has players take the role of an adventurer who starts with next to nothing and must build an army and income to slowly make a mark on the land, which by itself can go on without end. Singleplayer mode ends when you want it to. If you get bored with the original singeplayer, there are countless mods for you to download to enhance your experience

The game's multiplayer also has a wealth of mods with an active multiplayer community. With so many mods, it won't be surprising to find that many are no longer active, but you will find many that are. If you have a few friends, however, it can be fun to download a mod together and enter an abandoned mod to play by yourselves.

Additionally, a DLC is available titled Napoleonic Wars, which brings the muskets and cannonballs of the Napoleonic era to the multiplayer game. Spending a few extra bucks on this DLC will open you up to even more mods that can provide even more game experiences.

No doubt many games did not make this list, so feel free to share your bang-for-your-buck picks in the comments. Enjoy the summer, and spend wisely.

Surviving The Survivor-Horror Epidemic: The Good, The Bad, And The Early https://www.gameskinny.com/a3bc7/surviving-the-survivor-horror-epidemic-the-good-the-bad-and-the-early https://www.gameskinny.com/a3bc7/surviving-the-survivor-horror-epidemic-the-good-the-bad-and-the-early Mon, 24 Feb 2014 14:43:39 -0500 Hobo With A Keyboard

A new wave of genre is currently taking the gaming world head on. In an effort to maximise realism and in turn immersion, new games with the ‘survival’ tag are fast-arising in 2014. And they don’t appear to be running for cover anytime soon. The question is: who do they appeal to? From a fair few efforts I have made on DayZ and Rust, I have come to the conclusion that these games aren’t for the time constrained. To have a proper gaming session on one of these titles, you need at least a couple of hours to get anything done.

I have already wasted many an hour lost in the virtual haze of post-apocalyptic disaster, desperately wandering to find food in a resource-strained environment. To accommodate for the mass online audience, a vast map also has to follow suit. So it is not uncommon to be dying of starvation (and boredom), seeking out nearby landmarks to coordinate some sense of orientation. But I have had some of my most enjoyable gaming moments to date on such titles. My heart has raced and sunk like nothing else in DayZ, diving into the thick treeline at the sound of a gunshot, or even the haunting approach of footsteps. You truly fear for your virtual life in games as scarily realistic as this.

I first played the DayZ mod around the time of August. I’d finally ticked off the “super PC” (mid-range I would later discover) from my bucket list that I desired for about 8 years. This game blew my mind. The foliage and the clouds swarming about my head looked so real. I felt like I was planting my own footsteps in these surroundings; searching for rations and any tool of self-defence, in this desolate post-apocalyptic wasteland. It’s a game about nothing, where everything feels at stake. Finding a medical kit and an apple, only to be shot dead by a BOLD FACED LIAR who promised he was a “friendly,” was and still is, both heart-breaking and embittering. The shrieks of incoming zombies pierce one’s heart, and pit you right into the location of this nightmare in Chernarus. Without getting too in-depth (as the game has now been realised by most who have seen a computer before), it involves you, the survivor, to….survive. What happens beyond that is a concoction of your imagination, and a fate formed by your own decisions - or lack thereof, as many a strangers’ bullet will dictate. Without hearing much of the surrounding hype, my initial fear and fascination was firmly invested into the zombies. But within the first hour, I discovered the true fear : other people. It is game mechanics in their most unadulterated form, effectively allowing the game to create itself on a blank canvas woven with paranoia and fear.

Rust is very much of a similar ilk, but crosses over into a Minecraft-esque territory. The graphics are relatively average, if not sub-par in places. Long grass and shadows are cataclysmically pixelated, and the night sky looks like the painted bedroom ceiling of a stargazing enthusiast. But that may also seem more so whilst comparing it to the generically associated title that is one of the most visually stunning games I’ve witnessed (DayZ).

Your means of survival are not so much dependant on finding items (aside from blueprints for ‘special’ items), but crafting them from raw materials. You find wood and stone to create a flint hatchet, to cut down more wood, and hunt animals to survive. You use wood to cook meat, and animal fats for lighter fuel to put into your newly built furnace, which in turn allows you to craft basic weaponry such as pistols and shotguns. You create a shed to stockpile resources, then with those resources build a house. It is not time-forgiving, and after about 8 hours I only just got around to finishing my 2 up 2 down detached in the countryside. Prior to this, I built numerous sheds across a mountainous landscape, creeping about my new habitat in the night, like an Al-Qaedan Quasimodo.

There seems to be a willingness from a larger majority of players to co-operate in comparison to DayZ. My first couple of hours saw me collate together a group of 5 strangers; one of whom was slain quite abruptly for his assault on a fellow member of the tribe. We encountered what appeared to be an obscenely large wooden design, that would put the Great Wall to shame. This moment was reminiscent to the end of Monty Python’s Holy Grail, as a gawky invisible American’s voice boomed across the landscape from his kingdom, and demanded that we leave the area. He mentioned the rent was steep, which I initially thought was an act of facetiousness. I realised that in fact rooms were being rented out to players in exchange for raw materials on a weekly basis. We eventually came to an agreement of 200 wood and 100 metal ore for the next couple of days. I continued my gaming session with these fine men, until the point where I realised it was past 5 in the morning..

Since that day, I haven’t roamed with any new-found allies. I found myself gathering resources in an out-of-the-way area, and have not been able to pinpoint my whereabouts. The last time I tried to escape my Deliverance-esque surroundings, I accidentally jumped off of a cliff in the dark. Rust’s main issue is that there is little surrounding you to ever really determine your true whereabouts. Everything looks the same. And, unlike DayZ, there are few permanent buildings to help navigate you around the vast map. But aside from that, it has so far been a very enjoyable experience.

The sandbox horror survival genre is now in full swing, and you can find a platitude of ‘early access’ games of a similar ilk by the bucket load on steam. But the problem lies therein: to contemplate the possibility of “Early Access” for a game, it needs to be justifiable. Titles such as NetherWasteland 2 (both of which I’ve heard positive things about) and 7 days to die (and more mixed feelings on the latter), are similarly categorised “post-apocalyptic” titles that are also part of the first-generation Early access Open World Survivor-Horror games(FGEAOWSHGs, obviously). And it is hard to differentiate between the genuinely dedicated and strong community-based FGEAOWSHGs titles, and those fronted by teams apparently lacking the patience to land a finished product before they turn a profit. This is a cynical statement, but I cannot help but feel that it is far more than mere coincidence that a slew of similiarly-paced titles are now invading our inner thoughts as adrenaline-hungry gamers.

Early Access

In my view, the concept of “Early Access” games is fair enough. For some it has been a great way to back a project and help it develop into a greater final product as a result of additional funding prior to its final release. Minecraft’s Markus Persson was able to leave his day job in order to focus more on the game as a result of alpha-game funding. Rust is devised by Garry of Garry’s Mod, so has a resume – albeit brief – to bear some credibility behind the project. DayZ certainly had valid reasons to open up to the public early. It notoriously has a devoted and long standing community that wishes to see the game develop and blossom into something greater than it has ever been. The mod has survived for years, but never truly been a finished product. And devoted fans want to see just that, whilst committing monetarily and being part of the development process. And it is at the consumer’s discretion to purchase an unfinished game, preferably without complaining non-constructively about all the alleged bugs in the title…. But the problem is, that is exactly what happens. Especially when you unleash an unfinished game upon a new or potential community.

7 Days To Die has a disconcertingly identical appearance to Minecraft’s mechanics and aesthetics. Throw in the erratically twitchy NPC models, and this title gives off the body language of a shifty back alley character seeking your wallet ; a motive to utilise “Early Access” in order to financially captivate an already live demographic of zombie/horror fanatics. It comes across as if the concept of this game was devised by some marketing heads, and set upon amateur coding drones to complete the job. And graphically to say the least, it would appear that way.

But the real tragedy is not necessarily people wasting their money on “fad” games designed to fleece the consumer. The real tragedy it would appear, is that such a conclusion that I have deduced can easily be surmised through speculation. With “Early Access,” a game can potentially dig its own burial spot, shoot itself in the head, and slump into its cold dirt-ridden grave before a final release is even announced; potentially cutting off its finished development. I went into this article believing that this game was of little worth because of what little information I could find through online forums and one or two articles.

But I realised that my bias shouldn’t get the better of me, and I wanted to like the ideas and concepts of this game. I did more YouTube “research” and found more positive outlooks from some regular YouTube video posters. But the availability of opinions on this unfinished game was so thin at the time of writing this. And I could not accept anything less than an unanimous approval from what little information I could gather regarding it. The developers of this game might genuinely be trying to create something new and innovative. But visually, the game just looks really haphazard. It looks as if Left 4 Dead took a bucketful of sulphuric acid to the face and keeled over into a mess of broken of glass. The graphics are more reminiscent of 2005′s mediocre Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler’s Green than the survival horrors such as DayZ that it is attempting to compete with. But with its final release I really do hope to get a better idea of its worth, and hope to hear nothing but positivity - as the concept to me is genuinely intriguing.

The grey area that disallows for the possibility of consumers to make educated decisions upon purchasing a relatively unknown “Early Access” title such as 7 Days To Die (due to the lack of trusted reviewer sites or reliable games critics), is what could be so dangerous to new developers. And once they crash and burn on a non-fully released title, they won’t stand a chance in recuperating. To release a priced unfinished game that isn’t up to scratch and looks too bleak to redeem, is effectively getting caught with your pants down with piss all over your shins.

So I would say as a final word, that you must take heed when purchasing early access games. And developers, you should do when considering it as a viable concept to promote your creation. Your credibility is at stake if you try to push a half-baked product onto the mainstream gaming industry. And that industry is in a fantastic place now for independent game developers. There is a juxtaposition by which big companies such as EA and Activision are monopolizing the market with titles such as FIFA, Battlefield, and Call of Duty; but equally, outlets such as Xbox Arcade or Steam allow indie devs to put up their work for sale without the need to globally distribute physical copies. They can use the benefits of “Early Access” also, but the terms and conditions for both creator and consumer are finicky at the moment.

But, it is a new concept. If it does not get flooded with deception and crookedness, it could be another good thing to add to the indie developers’ toolkit. But up until now, the concept is too short-lived to give us any solid conclusion as to whether it is beneficial. Perhaps as an afterthought, developers/publishers could allow potential customers to try the alpha for perhaps one day, so that they can make a formidable decision as to whether they want to help support the future of the title in question. Just a thought. I never said it was a good one.
