Hardspace: Shipbreaker Halloween: Haunted Frontier

\n

Hardspace: Shipbreaker's Halloween event is Haunted Frontier, full of spooky haunted ships that put your bravery — and desire for salvage — to the test.

\n

The update, which is live now on Steam, turns any ship into a potential ghost ship. Things start deteriorating as you gather materials and fend off rogue AI nodes. Lights flicker on and off. Air gets sucked out of the room. And somewhere deep in the ship, unsettling sounds can be heard...

\n

Should you make it out alive, you can show off your hard-earned rewards with new stickers and badges.

\n

King Midas is back from the great beyond in Fortnite's Fortnitemares 2020 event from now until November 3, and he's giving you the chance to wreak havoc on friend and foe alike.

When you're eliminated in a Solo, Duos or Squads match, you get the chance to return as a Shadow in Nitemare Royal. Attack surviving players from the shadows and even possess vehicles to bring their game to an end.

That's the trick side of things, but the island has plenty of treats in store too. You can get your hands on the Pumpkin Rocket Launcher, Fiend Hunter Crossbow, a special Midas invention, and of course, candy.

\n

There's a suite of Fortnitemares challenges where you can unlock costumes and weapon skins such as the Smash-O'-Lantern Pickaxe and Midas' Shadow Wrap.

PUBG Mobile Infection Mode

\n

PUBG Mobile's Infection Mode is back from the dead from now until November 9, with new content, themes, costumes, and plenty of zombies.

\n

Infection Mode's classic combat returns, pitting a team of Defenders against a team of Zombies in an all-or-nothing fight. Zombies — sporting Halloween masks, if you so choose —  can only use melee attacks, but fallen Defenders transform into Zombies with chances for form shifts and stat buffs.

\n

If it all gets too much for the Defenders, they transform into Vanquishers when their team is down to three members. Foes they vanquish can't be resurrected.

\n

These hellish fights unfold across maps decked out with pumpkins, gravestones, and other seasonal paraphernalia. More costumes and decorations are planned before the end of the event.

Ghost-type Pokemon will be more common in the wild, in Raids, and in Eggs. You might even find a costumed Gengar in Raids or hatch a Sableye in costume if you're lucky.

If this is your first time taking part, you'll need to complete "The Witchmother's Bargain" quest from the Crown Store and earn the Witchmother's Whistle item. If you already have it, just select it from your collections to get started.

\n

Using the Whistle kicks off a two-hour period of bonus XP, but there's a lot more.

\n

Players can earn new mementos, furnishings, and Dremora and Hollowjack-themed items through Plunder Skulls earned in battle.

\n

Bosses drop Dremora Plunder Skulls with extra goods, including treasure maps and pages for the Grave Digger weapon style.

\n

There's the final evolution of the Indrik, a costume gala, grab bags, deals, and more. Check out the full details on the ESO event site.

Overcooked! 2  Moon Harvest Festival

\n

Overcooked! 2's Halloween celebration isn't technically Halloween-themed. It's in honor of harvest and autumn celebrations throughout eastern Asia, but it's fall-ish, so it works.

\n

Better yet, it's a free update with no end time, and the content will appear in Overcooked! All You Can Eat for next-gen consoles.

\n

Overcooked! 2's Moon Harvest Festival introduces new kitchens themed around water and lily pad obstacles. There are five new levels total, plus three succulent-looking mooncakes to add to the menu.

Borderlands 3 Halloween — Bloody Harvest Returns

\n

Borderlands 3's Bloody Harvest Halloween event is back for October 2020. The ghoulish festivities run through November 5, and it's easier than ever to get your hands on some sweet, ghastly gear.

\n

To kick things off, head to Sanctuary III, and speak with Maurice. Maurice tasks you with collecting Hecktoplasm from haunted enemies, easily spotted by their ghostly green glow.

\n

Defeating haunted enemies spawns specters you'll need to defeat as well, and that's when you finally get ahold of Hecktoplasm.

\n

After collecting enough of Hecktoplasm, Maurice opens the gate to Heck, where you can chat with Captain Haunt to access a number of quests, through which you'll earn Bloody Harvest items and cosmetics.

\n

This year, the Bloody Harvest quests are less demanding than before, making it easier to get loot.

\n
    \n
  • 4 challenges completed  “A Shrinking Feeling" weapon trinket
  • \n
  • 8 challenges completed  "Message from Beyond" ECHO Device skin
  • \n
  • 12 challenges completed  "Haunted Look" shared Vault Hunter skin
  • \n

  • \n
  • Warlock — Daywalker (vampire) Set
  • \n
  • Titan — Promethean Set

On the official Festival of the Lost blog post, Bungie provided more information on the Halloween event. The Spider is a new NPC that gives players Cipher Decoders that unlock special chests at the end of The Haunted Forest. The chests are worth pursuing because they contain Legendary items specific to the Festival of the Lost.

Rounding things out, there are new Sparrow skins available, as well as festival masks and vanity items for various armor sets, including broomsticks and witch hats.

Resident Evil Resistance October Update

\n

Resident Evil Resistance has a big October update in store, which is basically a Halloween update without actually being called a Halloween update.

\n

Jill Valentine joins the ranks of the Survivors, with powerful weapons and her characteristic dodge mechanic from Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake. And as is only fitting, Nemesis itself is a playable Mastermind for the first time. Players control Nemesis through playing as Nicholai, another new Mastermind.

\n

The Prison is a new map added in RE Resistance's October update, and the Uptown Raccoon City and Bemusement Park maps get a remix with new layouts.

\n

Finally is a slew of new costumes and weapon skins, Survivors' perks and customizable abilities, and Mastermind traps.

Grounded October Update

\n

Grounded’s October update adds ziplines and more to the survival game, including some Halloween-themed items. The initial announcement is relatively light on details, but players can expect decorations, recreational items, and doodads to use with friends. These include harvestable Candy Corn and a new landmark in the Frankenline, which is described as "a creepy discarded Etch-a-Sketch you can actually draw on."

\n

Aside from washing The Backyard in a spooky glow, the October update for Grounded does a lot on the backend as well, including fixing a handful of bugs, fine-tuning combat, and unlocking new perks. You can see the full patch notes here

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath  All Hallows' Eve

\n

Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath is getting some Halloween goodness with the All Hallows’ Eve character skin pack. It’s available now and is free for Aftermath owners. Those who haven’t upgraded to Aftermath yet would need to purchase the expansion, which also unlocks the Summer Heat and Femme Fatale packs from earlier in 2020.

\n

Mortal Kombat 11’s All Hallows’ Eve skin pack trailer highlighted three of the included skins. One is the “Blizzard King” outfit for Sub-Zero, and then there’s the part-werewolf part-school spirit “Beast Within” skin for Johnny Cage. Then there’ “Bad Medicine” for D’Vorah, turning the Kytinn fighter into a spidery nurse from hell.

\n

It’s not certain if Warner Bros. is adding anything else to Mortal Kombat 11’s Halloween event, but we’ll update if something new turns up.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Halloween

\n

The Halloween fun isn’t limited to New Horizons, as Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp celebrates spooky season in its own way. The 2020 Pocket Camp Halloween event features a number of special activities with ghoulish treats on offer for those who complete certain goals.

\n

Jack comes around and demands sweet treats. Hand over bat-themed lollipops to get bat furniture as a reward, and plant pumpkins during the month’s Garden Event to nab hatbats. Jack offers exclusive items such as mystical pumpkins in return.

\n

Taking part in the October Fishing Tourney nets some goodies as well, with potion-themed furniture on offer every time players reach a size goal with the fish they catch.

\n

Then there’s a fright night gyroidite scavenger hunt, new Happy Home classes and challenges, wall and carpet sets, special cookie items and more. The Pocket Camp Halloween and October events are live now.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Halloween

\n

Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Halloween update is available to download for free now, and it’s bringing more than just the Czar of Halloween to the island.

\n

Animal Crossing patch 1.5 paves the way for Halloween by adding Candy as an item players can purchase from the Nooklings’ store and pumpkins as growable DIY fodder.

\n

The patch 1.5 trailer shows players planting, watering, and harvesting at least four different pumpkin varieties and then using them in various Halloween-themed DIY recipes.

\n

On Halloween night (October 31), Jack himself visits the island. It’s not clear yet what he requires of the player, but all the residents will be lurking about, asking for Candy and showing off their costumes.

\n

The patch adds new skin tone options for players to look their creepy best as well. We’ll update with more information about what New Horizons Halloween brings to the table as it becomes available.

Monster Hunter: World Iceborne — Fun Fright Fest

\n

Capcom’s brewing up a special Monster Hunter: World Iceborne Halloween event called the Fun Fright Fest, part of the hefty Title Update 5. It runs from October 15 at 8 p.m. EST through November 5 at the same time and is exclusive to the expansion.

\n

The Autumn Harvest Fest is returning to the base Monster Hunter: World game, but Capcom hasn’t said much about it yet.

\n

Fun Fright Fest (starting at 7:06 in the above trailer) sees the Seliana Gathering Hub decked out with spooky furnishings, and the handler dons a Cute Demoness outfit to celebrate the occasion. There are two special ticket types to collect during the event and trade in for loot: the Fun Fright Ticket and the VIP Fun Fright Ticket.

\n

The former get doled out as daily login bonuses for the MHW Halloween event and can be used to craft armor with Decoration slots. Players can exchange the latter for in-game decorations and Layered Armor, but these are only available as random item drops. Both ticket types can be exchanged for Melding Tickets too.

\n

There’s at least one new set of armor coming to the Fun Fright Fest, Demon Lord Alpha+. Wearing pieces of this armor set increases the chance of getting VIP Fun Fright Tickets.

\n

Capcom may reveal more about Monster Hunter: World Iceborne’s Fun Fright Fest as the start date approaches, and we’ll update if that happens.

Killing Floor 2: Infernal Insurrection

\n

It wouldn’t be Halloween without Killing Floor 2’s annual Halloween celebrations, and 2020 is no different. This year’s Halloween event is Killing Floor 2: Infernal Insurrection, and it brings treats galore, including new weapons, maps, and cosmetics.

\n

Infernal Insurrection’s new map is Hallmark Station, a twisted take on London’s famous King’s Cross Station. Hallmark Station has been overrun by zeds, of course, and players must team up with fellow mercenaries to take down the demonic threat. Hellmark Station includes Survival, Endless, and Weekly modes.

\n

Two new HRG weapons make their debut in Killing Floor 2’s Halloween event.

\n
    \n
  • HRG Scorcher (Firebug class bonus) — a flare gun that marks targets by setting them on fire
  • \n
  • HRG Arc Generator (Survivalist class bonus) — fires EMP blasts in short bursts or powerful charges
  • \n
\n

From now until November 10, Killing Floor 2 is also introducing a number of Halloween events, objectives, bonuses, and cosmetics.

Grounded Clean Water Guide: How to Find and Collect It https://www.gameskinny.com/acdsb/grounded-clean-water-guide-how-to-find-and-collect-it https://www.gameskinny.com/acdsb/grounded-clean-water-guide-how-to-find-and-collect-it Wed, 12 Aug 2020 20:14:23 -0400 Jonathan Moore

Unless you're playing Obsidian's Grounded in creative mode, one of the first things you'll need to get is water. Like food, it's essential to your survival.

While you can simply drink from any pool of water found on the map, like puddles and the pond, it's not particularly wise to do so. Drinking dirty water will refill part of your depleted thirst meter, sure, but it will also make you sick and greatly reduce your hunger meter.

So how do you find clean water in Grounded? Read on to find out.

Water Droplets

Finding water droplets, or dew droplets, is actually one of the harder ways to find water in Grounded. That's because water droplets are hard to spot, and they spawn in completely random areas.

Typically, you'll find water droplets hanging from the underside of green grass blades. So keep your head up when looking for them. The droplets are crystal clear, save for a little white around the edges. Use the reflection of the sun to spot them, or look for distorted background structures warped by the water.

Brown, dry grass won't have dew droplets, so don't waste your time looking there. I also haven't found water droplets hanging from any other source in the game in its Early Access build, so you won't find them hanging from the oak tree or from thistles either.

There are two ways to get water droplets hanging from grass blades:

  • Climb a nearby plant, rock, mound, or structure to get level with the water and slurp it up
  • Knock the droplet down with a pebblet

The latter is the most effective method. Water droplets don't break when they hit solid ground, but they do bounce, so keep an eye on where they fall. Water droplets will, however, break and disappear if they hit a puddle.

You can store water droplets in the canteen by approaching a droplet and scooping it up. The Canteen can hold two water droplets, while the Canteen+ can hold four droplets. You cannot mix water with juice or soda in a canteen.

You can also "harvest" water droplets by crafting the Dew Collector, which will generate three gulps of clean water a day (every eight hours or so).

Juice Droplets

Keep an eye out for juice boxes around the backyard. They're brightly colored, so you really can't miss them.

They're important because they produce juice droplets. These look almost exactly like water droplets, except they're green, and they restore portions of your thirst and hunger meters. If you need a quick snack, drink a juice droplet for a quick boost.

Better yet, they're already on the ground.

The only downside is that it seems juice only spawns once per day. However, I have found instances of three or four juice droplets together. Whether that's an Early Access "glitch" or not, I don't know.

You can also collect juice with the canteen; just remember that you can't mix juice with water or soda!

Soda

Soda has a brownish tint to it and is similar to juice. Unsurprisingly, it is found near the soda cans strewn around the backyard. Like juice, soda seems to spawn about once a day, though I've seen clusters of it. It also replenishes some of your thirst and hunger meters, though it doesn't seem to be as strong as juice.

Every once in a while, soda will spawn inside or underneath the edges of soda cans, so be sure to thoroughly check! Again, you can store soda in a canteen, but you can't mix it with juice or water.

Nectar

Nectar can be found underneath big flowers, such as the rose bushes and tulips by the pond (both on the near and far sides). You'll always find the bright yellow globs on the ground, almost always near the stem.

Be wary of harvesting this resource, though. Nectar is always near spiders, specifically Orb Weavers.

Like juice and soda, Nectar replenishes a decent amount of thirst and hunger. Though it's not as good as the methods above, it is more potent than aphid honeydew.

Aphid Honeydew

There's no doubt you've already seen the tiny green aphids flittering around almost every area of Grounded. They're good for more than just meat and learning how to make decorations.

Aphids randomly produce aphid honeydew, which you'll always find lying on the ground. It's often an amber color: lighter than sap but darker than nectar.

Honeydew will replenish much more of your hunger meter than your thirst meter; its effect on thirst is almost non-existent. However, it's useful in a pinch.

Grounded Early Access Review: Big Ambitions https://www.gameskinny.com/smoxu/grounded-early-access-review-big-ambitions https://www.gameskinny.com/smoxu/grounded-early-access-review-big-ambitions Wed, 05 Aug 2020 16:57:49 -0400 Mark Delaney

Since Minecraft, survival games have become a staple of the games industry, but until now, no other game in the genre has been so family-friendly.

With Grounded, Obsidian walks back years of survival games moving ceaselessly toward dreary post-apocalyptic worlds and instead imagines a colorful little-big sandbox where insects are intimidating behemoths.

The developers have a lot to be proud of right out of the gate with the Game Preview/Early Access version of Grounded, and even as it's clearly lacking in some areas  namely story and polish  it's easy to see the small offshoot team at Obsidian has crafted something adventurous and wonderful.

Grounded Early Access Review: Big Ambitions

In Grounded, one to four players are shrunken down to a centimeter for reasons that aren't yet clear. Shocked to awaken as something smaller than an ant, the now-standard survival game ramp introduces players to its world of massive anthills, fearsome spiders, and grass as tall as buildings — or at least, that's how it all appears from your perspective.

The premise is a strong one and Obsidian wastes no time building on it. The game's open world, The Backyard, is full of interesting secrets to discover and, of course, plenty of objects to craft. The game's earliest moments will be spent chopping down blades of grass and plucking pebbles and plant fibers from the earth to make a simple axe, but soon, your toolbelt expands to include other handheld objects like spears and torches.

After that, you'll learn how to make different armor sets, each offering different stat bonuses which can positively affect things like your defensive abilities or how long you can go without eating or drinking.

The most exciting part of Grounded's crafting system is its already expansive base building mechanics. From simple doors and walls to basketball courts and reading rooms, you're free to build to your heart's content, so long as you're willing to defend what you've made.

Given that you're just a centimeter tall, insects such as beetles, spiders, and even ladybugs are transformed into wild beasts you must always account for. Enemies will attack your base, meaning how to build it is more than a cosmetic choice, unless you're playing in Creative mode. By lining spike traps and bottlenecks for home defense, players can push back against their six-legged (or more) foes.

This is an exciting part of Grounded, but combat as a whole needs some balancing at launch. Many enemies can kill you in just a few hits even when you're wearing armor. Perhaps Obsidian likes it that way to keep the threats feeling so scary, but it feels poorly balanced for solo players especially.

One of the most compelling elements of Grounded is hardly available right now: its story. You can see all of the story content in about 30 minutes in this version, as it amounts to one NPC scene and some audio logs.

As it's Game Preview, we know to expect more down the line, but given the game's sci-fi teases — it seems Obsidian plans to actually explain its shrunken survivors — I'm eager to see more, but I can't yet. If you're in it just for the story, you can safely keep waiting for now.

Having said that, I'm pretty picky with my survival game timeshare, as so many punish players with harsh conditions and obtuse menus right away. It can be pretty unappealing. Grounded doesn't have that problem. Its UI is one of the best I've ever seen in the genre. With so many menus, I expect more confusion, but I routinely know my way around my inventory, the deep crafting menu, and other helpful tools like a hotswapping UI for assigning your most-used items.

You can also switch between third- and first-person, toggle the HUD display, and provide Early Access feedback all from a radial menu. Obsidian has joked that they don't normally make this kind of game, and that's true, but you'd never know it. It seems years of building RPGs have taught them some things about helping players navigate their bulky backpacks.

Something else Grounded shares with RPGs is its abundance of secrets. Audio logs are ubiquitous in games, and though they add some light story beats right now, the real treasures come from discovering new craftable objects, or even stumbling on them whole cloth.

Things like a rotten bee armor, rarer insects, and new areas to install at your base can all be discovered with exploration. You could spoil most secrets by heading into Creative, where it's all there to see right away, but a lot of fun is had in turning over stones — literally — and finding something you didn't know existed underneath.

In my time with Grounded, I've found a basketball hoop blueprint, fungal bombs, and fun berry furniture to name a few. You can also stumble on the world interacting with itself, like when I saw a major battle between spiders and beetles. No doubt this is an area the studio will continue to expand on as well but even on day one, it feels like every moment spent in The Backyard is ripe for adventure.

If you're not one to simply build up a base or explore for secrets, there's a simple quest system in place too, which will allow you to advance your character in more quantitative ways.

Early Access means bugs, and in this case, I don't just mean insects. Most of the issues I saw were in the game's menus, where multiplayer lobbies don't populate correctly or UI items might look a bit wonky. Trying to swim with your head above water also barely works right now, and when it does, it still leaves the camera in an awkward spot.

It's not a bug, but the world map could also use some improved UI as the way it's set up currently is less than clear in some cases.

These are exactly the sort of growing pains any Early Access game reminds you of when you boot it up, though, and that's why we aren't speaking to the final experience in this review. For now, Grounded surely still needs some work, but it's already a game fans of the genre will totally dig.

Grounded Early Access Review — The Bottom Line

A strong premise will get you a great trailer, but only a strong team will deliver a great game. Even in Early Access/Game Preview, Grounded is a great game. Its youthful spin on the survival genre is supremely refreshing as it casts aside years of greyscale, slow-death misery simulators in favor of something players of all ages can enjoy.

Grounded is full of marvelous mechanics, creative contraptions, and some surprisingly scary showdowns. It has an exciting world rich with discovery; its base building already goes deep; and its imaginative, child-like spirit rejects genre norms.

The team has more work to do by adding more bug variety, expanding the story content, and balancing combat, but the foundation is certainly solid.

Grounded Guide: How to Get Bee Armor https://www.gameskinny.com/8oxix/grounded-guide-how-to-get-bee-armor https://www.gameskinny.com/8oxix/grounded-guide-how-to-get-bee-armor Tue, 04 Aug 2020 14:11:45 -0400 Mark Delaney

Even though the survival game is in Game Preview/Early Access, there are already several armor sets to acquire in Grounded. Depending on what kind of build you're going for, you may want to get the Grub Armor, Ant Armor, or one of several others, including the Bee Armor.

If it's the latter you're after, either for its stats or just to max out your collection like batsuits below Wayne Manor, this guide will walk you through how to find the well-hidden armor set.

How to Get the Bee Armor in Grounded

To start, you'll want to find your bearings. Head to the center of where the three lasers converge at the Mysterious Machine location. You likely already finished reactivating the lasers earlier in the story.

From there, aim about 90 degrees from the house. Use the screenshot below to get an exact direction.

What you're looking for is an anthill. Perhaps you already tried heading down there, and if so, maybe you were already attacked by a swarm of ants in the darkness.

If you're having trouble locating the anthill, we've marked it with a trail marker in the above screenshot, or you can see its location in the below image as well. It's identified by where we've left the yellow cursor with the orange circle surrounding it.

To best prepare for what lies within the anthill, make sure you have each of the following:

  • a good one-handed weapon
  • several torches (4+)
  • armor equipped

It's worth noting that all three pieces of the Bee Armor are skeleton pieces. The Rotten Bee Face Mask is a skull. The Rotten Bee Shin Guards is a boney set of legs. And the Rotten Bee Shoulder Pads are boney hands.

Once you have all those items, head for the anthill. Remember that you can practice running this route in creative mode so that no insects will come for you. This way, you won't get lost in the labyrinthine anthill and you'll know just where to go.

As you're dual-wielding the torch and weapon, enter the anthill and stay to the right at every fork you can. Eventually, you will come to a room holding the first of three bee armor pieces, shown below on a ledge. It will be the Rotten Bee Face Mask.

Next, turn around and fork off to the right again until you come to a room with a hole in the floor. Be careful not to step in it yet. Instead go around it to the back wall to find the second armor piece, again shown here on the map. It will be the Rotten Bee Shin Guards.

Now that you have two pieces, you can safely descend that hole behind you. Once you get down in the hole, you'll find the third armor piece close by in that very room, along with another BURG-L Chip. This will be the Rotten Bee Shoulder Pads.

From here, follow the path available to you as it ascends upward back through the anthill. Eventually, you'll make like Ponyboy Curtis and step out into the bright sunlight, bee armor in tow.

That's all you need to know about how to get the Bee Armor in Grounded. For more tips and guides, be sure to head over to our Grounded guides page

Grounded Grub Hide Guide https://www.gameskinny.com/znq6s/grounded-grub-hide-guide https://www.gameskinny.com/znq6s/grounded-grub-hide-guide Fri, 31 Jul 2020 12:55:53 -0400 Mark Delaney

Grub Hide isn't needed early on in Grounded, but after a few hours, Grub Armor may be a necessity. For that, you'll need lots of Grub Hides.

If you're stumped on how to find them, this guide will show you several of their locations, which are numerous compared to some other desirable items, like thistles.

Here's everything you need to know about getting Grub Hides in Obsidian's newest survival game.

How to Get Grub Hide in Grounded

You'll need the shovel to get Grub Hide, but you'll need the Pebble Hammer to get the shovel. Build that first. Once you have the Pebble Hammer, you'll need to complete the Acorn Shovel recipe. That includes:

  • 2x Sprig
  • 1x Woven Fiber
  • 1x Acorn Shell

It's the Acorn Shell that you'll need the hammer for, as nothing else can crack that nut. You can find acorns around the base of the massive oak tree in the backyard. You can't miss it, and you've likely been there already. The acorn will split into Acorn Top (for collecting sap) and Acorn Shell. You'll need the shell for the next step.

Now you can craft the Acorn Shovel. It's of little use in most parts of the game, but watch the dirt for scurrying little critters moving under the ground, like in Tremors. Those are the Grubs.

Dig where you see the dirt moving to reveal a Grub. Once it's out of the ground, you'll have to kill it. Unlike most of the backyard's residents, though, Grubs aren't so tough. In fact, they appear not to even fight back at all.

Once it's defeated, you'll have several parts to pick through, including the Grub Hide you're after. Hooray! Now you're almost done.

Like any new element or crafting material you find, you should bring the Grub Hide to a nearby research station. Scanning it with the analyzer will reveal new blueprints for which the Grub Hide is needed, including the elusive Grub Armor set, which includes:

  • Grub Leggings
  • Grub Vest
  • Grub Goggles

That's all you need to know about finding Grub Hide in Grounded. For more tips and tricks, be sure to check out out other Grounded guides while you're here!

Grounded Thistle Location and Crafting Guide https://www.gameskinny.com/08737/grounded-thistle-location-and-crafting-guide https://www.gameskinny.com/08737/grounded-thistle-location-and-crafting-guide Fri, 31 Jul 2020 12:35:06 -0400 Mark Delaney

In Grounded, certain items, such as sprigs and plant fibers, are immediately important. That's obvious to see. But dig in for a while longer, and it'll become clear you need something else: thistles.

In this guide, we'll show you how to spot a thistle plant on your adventures, as well as what you'll want to craft using thistles. Save some space in your backpack, because you're going to want to stock up.

Where to Find Thistles in Grounded

Though they're not nearly as common as typical grass, thistle plants stick out as a result, which can be very helpful. If you find yourself in a clearing, look far above the grass for tall purple plants.

Those are the thistles you're looking for. If you're not in a clearing, though, they can be hard to spot that way, so it's best to know what they look like at eye level. With their jagged leaves extending out just above the ground, thistles stick out nicely.

To get thistles in your inventory, hack away at the leaves with your axe (even a Level 2 axe will work nicely).

Each hit will net you a single thistle, and unlike grass or other plants, thistles don't seem to ever completely deplete. That's good because you'll want a lot of thistles.

What Can You Craft with Thistles in Grounded?

So far, we've found three uses for thistles in Grounded.

Combining thistles with mite fuzz gives you arrows for your sprig bow. This is critical because ranged combat will very often save your life in Grounded.

You're outmatched by spiders beetles, and even ladybugs, which aren't nearly as cute in the game as they are in real life. So you'll want to be sure to save yourself lots of space for crafted arrows coming from your thistle collection.

In addition to the basic arrow recipe, you'll also need thistles for the Spiky Sprig, an advanced melee weapon with a great damage and stun combination.

Thistles are also used in crafting Spike Strips, which can be laid down in front of your base like spiked logs fending off unwanted pests like ants.

Now that you know where to find thistles and how to use them, you'll be one step closer to surviving the densest jungle on Game Pass: the backyard. For more on Obsidian's newest survival game, be sure to check out our other Grounded guides

Grounded: How to Play With Friends https://www.gameskinny.com/8qaw4/grounded-how-to-play-with-friends https://www.gameskinny.com/8qaw4/grounded-how-to-play-with-friends Thu, 30 Jul 2020 13:42:40 -0400 Kenneth Seward Jr.

Grounded, Obsidian’s Honey I Shrunk the Kids styled survival game, is rather entertaining  especially with friends. Traversing the game’s bug-infested backyard alone isn’t necessarily the best way to play. Unfortunately, Grounded’s Early Access/Game Preview status makes partnering up and playing with friends a little tricky.

Don't worry, though. We're here to explain how teaming up with friends is done in Grounded. It only takes a few seconds. That is, if everything is working as it should.

How to Play with Friends in Grounded

Hosting Duties

This part is pretty simple. All you need to do is click on the multiplayer option located on Grounded's Main Menu screen. From there, you’ll opt into either hosting or joining an online game.

If you’re hosting the game, you’ll want to direct everyone to your particular game session either through some form of party chat (Microsoft owned or otherwise) or through Steam’s chat messaging service.

Basically, let them know to use the “Search in Friends” option. They can also join by:

  • Going to their Friends List
  • Clicking on your Gamer Tag/Steam Name
  • Choosing “Join Game”

If you're looking to join a friend, wait for them to host the match and search for their game. Hit join, and you’ll hopefully end up in their lobby. Once there, everyone will pick their characters while the host decides on the difficulty setting. Simple.

Grounded Crossplay

Grounded allows for friends to crossplay with one another, regardless of their chosen platform (Xbox One and Microsoft’s Game Pass PC service or Steam).

Doing so isn’t difficult, the only caveat being that each person must have an Xbox Live account. You aren’t required to have already befriended each other  unless you’re looking to create a friends-only session but you’ll have to be able to connect via Microsoft’s services.

Game Pass PC

For instance, if you’re the one playing on PC (Game Pass, not Steam), then you can hit the Windows Key + G to open the Xbox Game Bar. Once there, you’ll be able to add a friend, choose to join their game, and so on.

Xbox One

If you’re playing on Xbox (and they’re the one’s playing on PC), then all you’d have to go is go to your Friends List, add them, and choose to join their game.

Steam

The same thing goes for Steam. Since you’re prompted to tie your Steam account to your Xbox Live account at the start of the game, you’ll be treated as if you were playing on Xbox One or through the Game Pass on PC.

Once everyone is connected, just host/join a multiplayer game following the instructions above.

Technical Difficulties

Grounded is currently in Early Access, meaning that there are a few notable bugs to contend with.

One of them seems to be the inability to host a multiplayer session. Players will be able to join your lobby but you won’t be able to actually start the session.

It can also be difficult to join a crossplay session. Sometimes a friend’s game won’t show up during a search, or you might get booted from the lobby after picking your character.

This kind of thing can make playing with friends a pain. Thankfully, it doesn’t take much effort to circumvent these issues. Just keep trying to host/join each other’s games. Eventually, it’ll work as intended.

Grounded is an entertaining survival game. Being able to explore a world from a shrunken child's perspective is an experience we didn’t know we wanted. Or rather, we knew the idea sounded interesting — we just didn’t realize how fun it could actually be.

The easiest way to join someone in Grounded would have been to use Xbox’s “Game Invite” feature. Just click the guide button, go to friends, click on the person you want to adventure with, and invite them. Easy peasy. The same goes for playing on PC, though the route would slightly differ.

The problem is that Obsidian hasn’t implemented this feature yet. It’s “coming soon”. The good news is that the methods outlined above provide easy ways to get around this issue.

It’s dangerous to go alone. Make sure you take advantage of Grounded's crossplay and multiplayer features to bring some friends and companions along for the ride. For more survival-based tips and tricks, check out the links above or head over to our Grounded guides hub. We got you covered!

Grounded: How to Get the Level 2 Axe https://www.gameskinny.com/p4gk6/grounded-how-to-get-the-level-2-axe https://www.gameskinny.com/p4gk6/grounded-how-to-get-the-level-2-axe Thu, 30 Jul 2020 13:30:21 -0400 Mark Delaney

Thie first thing you'll make in Grounded is a pebble axe and for a good while, it will serve you well. But once it's time to really plant your flag and build a base you can take shelter in, you'll need the Level 2 axe, also known as the insect axe.

In this guide, we'll show you what you need to unlock the level 2 axe blueprint, including its full crafting recipe and what sort of things you can build once you have it.

How to Get the Level 2 Insect Axe in Grounded

If you're ready to graduate from the pebble axe, you'll need a short list of hard to find items:

  • Head of a ladybug
  • Bombadier parts
  • Spider Silk
How to Get a Ladybug Head

Though they look cute, the ladybugs are one of the game's toughest enemies, with a charging attack that can down you in two hits if you don't block or evade. You can usually find them north of the central research station where you met the robot (the oak tree) if you did the game's brief story content in Game Preview.

We recommend that you keep your distance by using the sprig bow and a whole bunch of arrows crafted ahead of the battle. You can also get in close with a spear if you block well. Remember that a perfectly timed block will stun enemies for a short window.

How to Get Bombadier Parts

Once you've defeated the ladybug (it took several tries, didn't it? Us too.) your next step is to acquire Bombardier parts. Bombadiers are the long, greenish beetles that may have already killed you a few times, but sorry to say, you've got to take one of them on as well.

Again, a ranged battle is key here. Know that most insects can't chase you up awkward terrain, like leaves hanging over their dwellings. So perch up on a log with your bow like Katniss Everdeen and take out a Bombardier. Once it's dead, you'll need three Bombardier parts from its little bug corpse.

How to Get Spider Silk

The last item you'll need can be the easiest or the hardest. It depends on how you play it. You'll need to acquire four units of spider silk from spider webs. Approaching any spider webs and slashing at them will dole out several units of silk, and you should get what you need on the first try.

Just be very mindful of your surroundings, as at any moment the spider who made the web may come to check if dinner has yet been served. Don't be dinner.

Unlocking the Level 2 Insect Axe

Hopefully, you get out of there without another deathmatch on your hands. However you escape, head to a research station with your key items in tow. Using any research analyzer you find, scan the ladybug head. It will unlock the Level 2 insect axe for crafting, and now that you have the blueprint, you'll already have the items you need to immediately build it.

For good measure, scan anything else you haven't scanned yet to earn more raw science and unlock more blueprints.

What is the Insect Axe Used For?

Like the pebble axe, the insect axe can be used as a weapon, but it's most valuable as a tool. With it, you can chop down weeds, which are a necessary ingredient in most of the foundational basebuilding elements, like doors and roofs.

If you don't want to spend all your time living in an empty soda can, the Level 2 insect axe is the gatekeeper to a whole new world of living large even while you're extremely small. So get it as soon as you're able to and build the dream house you've always wanted... even if it's made of grass.

Grounded Workbench Guide https://www.gameskinny.com/6xfnu/grounded-workbench-guide https://www.gameskinny.com/6xfnu/grounded-workbench-guide Wed, 29 Jul 2020 16:55:21 -0400 Mark Delaney

In Grounded, like most survival games, you're lost without your workbench. Sure, the enemies may be ants, gnats, and beeltes rather than sharks, zombies, or wolves, but the core systems of Grounded still rely heavily on the workbench.

With that in mind, you'll need to know how to build a bench, as well as what you can make once you have one. Here's everything you need to know about the workbench in Grounded

How to Build a Workbench in Grounded

Before you can use the workbench, you'll need to build it. For that, there's a simple recipe of (thankfully) some pretty abundant resources. You'll need:

  • 3x grass plank
  • 4x sprig
  • 2x sap

Grass planks are the most plentiful. You get them just by cutting down blades of grass. You normally get about three planks at a time, so just a single blade of grass should get you going.

For sprigs, you'll want to look around on the ground. The smallest green sprouts are actually plant fibers, which are also crucial, but the other taller sprouts are the sprigs (pictured below).

With those in hand, you'll need a bit of sap, which are the amber-colored droplets found on and around various plants. These aren't as common as the other ingredients, but they're still quite abundant. Just don't confuse them with the more yellow-orange nectar droplets, which are actually a food item.

Once you have all three items, you can craft a workbench in your crafting menu under the utilities banner.

You'll need to pick a safe space for the workbench. While the game has plenty of shelter pieces to build, like grass walls, doors, and roofs, you won't be able to make any of those until you get the Level 2 axe.

In the meantime, the safest place we've found is inside any of the empty soda cans left hanging around the backyard.Head inside one you like the location of, and lay down your workbench.

While you're at it, build a lean-to, which serves as a resting space and respawn beacon. You can also really make it feel like a home by adding stuff like lamps, a fire for cooking food, and a waypoint so you never lose your way. As you can see below, my humble abode has all the necessities.

What You Can and Can't Craft at a Workbench

It should be noted that a workbench isn't the gateway to all your crafting needs. Many smaller items can be built without ever having a workbench at all.

The workbench is really the threshold between the earliest unlocks, where basic survival is key, and the next level up, where you can start to get comfortable and think about settling down someplace.

With that in mind, there's a simple way to know what does and does not require a workbench.

In your crafting menu, any blueprint or recipe with the workbench icon to the right of it must be built at a workbench. This includes armor. Once you have the workbench, armor should come as your next priority.

Anything that doesn't include the workbench icon can be crafted on the fly, such as tools, arrows, and health items.

Grounded Guide: How to Get Woven Fibers https://www.gameskinny.com/civ9l/grounded-guide-how-to-get-woven-fibers https://www.gameskinny.com/civ9l/grounded-guide-how-to-get-woven-fibers Wed, 29 Jul 2020 15:54:43 -0400 Mark Delaney

In the little-big world of Grounded, the backyard has never been so dangerous. With ants, spiders, and even surprisingly formidable ladybugs scurrying around, it's you who risks getting stepped on for once, not the insect world.

Players have to live with survival at the forefront of their minds, which means you'll first need to know how to craft basic tools and equipment before you can start worrying about amenities like fancy lamps or taxidermied gnats.

This guide will teach you how to craft woven fibers, truly the game's bedrock for backyard explorers to rely on.

How to Get Woven Fibers in Grounded

Given how important they are, it's good that woven fibers aren't so rare. They're crafted by combining three plant fibers in your crafting menu.

Plant fibers are found all over the backyard and seem to come in two visual styles. In either case, they look like small green sprouts coming from the ground. You can see one example below.

You can carry plenty of any item provided you have the backpack space for the first of them, so fill up on plant fibers as often as you can. You'll need them for a ton of different projects, including virtually all the early-game necessities like the axe and different types of armor.

For a reliable bounty of plant fibers, be sure to finish off the stems of grass and other plants you cut down. While the initial teardown will give you other things like grass planks, finishing off the remaining stump with one last slash gives you multiple plant fibers in one go.

What Can You Craft with Woven Fibers in Grounded?

Like I said, the list of crafting items that require woven fibers is huge, seemingly the biggest in the game right now. I'm still uncovering more recipes, but already I've found more than a dozen which need woven fibers to be crafted.

That list includes vital resources like the pebblet axe, without which you're basically dead on arrival, but also, the pebblet hammer, the canteen, and the sprig bow, which is another vital resource that allows for ranged combat. You can check out the full list of early discoveries in the screenshot below.

Here's a growing list just in case. Note that I haven't found all of the recipes quite yet.

  • Acorn Shovel
  • Armor Glue
  • Canteen
  • Clover Head
  • Clover Poncho
  • Clover Shin Guards
  • Door
  • Eyepatch
  • Pebblet Axe
  • Pebblet Hammer
  • Slime Mold Sconce
  • Spiky Sprig
  • Sprig Bow
  • Storage Basket
  • Torch

Grounded Will Have an Arachnophobia Mode for Those Who Hate Spiders https://www.gameskinny.com/5yeca/grounded-will-have-an-arachnophobia-mode-for-those-who-hate-spiders https://www.gameskinny.com/5yeca/grounded-will-have-an-arachnophobia-mode-for-those-who-hate-spiders Wed, 08 Apr 2020 17:49:21 -0400 Jonathan Moore

Obsidian's upcoming Grounded is essentially Honey, I Shrunk the Kids in video game form. It's full of adventure and whimsy and child-like wonder, and since we first learned about it last year, it's been one of our most-anticipated games of 2020

But it also harbors some of the frights from that vaunted film franchise, including spiders. For those arachnophobes out there, including this writer, the mere thought of playing a game with those creepy-crawlies lumbering around was a sobering prospect.

Thankfully, Obsidian is awesome. Perusing Twitter today, as I am wont to do, I came across a tweet from the developer (retweeted by a colleague) stating that Grounded will have an arachnophobia mode as an accessibility option.

Replying to a tweet by TheRealKoding, Obsidian said they aren't sure how the mode will work just yet, but that it will be an option.

Obsidian added in a follow-up tweet that "there is still research being done as to what [the mode] will finally do," and that "once we're ready to show it off, we will!"

Scrolling through the thread's replies, the news has been near-unanimously praised so far. Arachnophobia isn't often at the top of the list when we think about accessibility options in video games, so this is a really cool move on Obsidian's part.

It will be interesting to see what, if anything, replaces the spiders since they appear to play a large role in the game. But we'll just have to wait and see.

Grounded is set to release through Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access on July 28. Its story trailer debuted during the most recent Inside Xbox stream

After a greeting from Phil Spencer wishing everyone well in the time of COVID-19, the announcements came rapid-fire. With several new Xbox Game Pass titles announced, DLC for some of the year's latest games, as well as deep looks at what's new and upcoming in the suddenly busy Xbox Game Studios space, there's a lot to go over.

Here's everything announced at Inside Xbox for April 7, 2020.

Inside Xbox Roundup April 7: Everything Announced and Revealed

Obsidian's Grounded Gets a Game Preview Launch Date

While we need to keep waiting a few months before we get our hands on the Honey-I-Shrunk-The-Kids-like (that's a genre, right?), Obsidian did drop by the stream to show off the game's story mode, which included several hints of a looming threat besides the ants and spiders that suddenly outsize you in the survival game.

Obsidian also revealed when players can start digging into the dirt  literally  of Grounded. It hits Xbox Game Preview on July 28. Previously, the Xbox team has hinted that Xbox Insiders will get an even earlier preview too, though if that remains the plan, they didn't touch on it today.

Major Nelson Chats Xbox Series X with Developer Jason Ronald

The tech and spec nerds had their fill once more as Larry Hryb was joined by the Xbox Series X Director of Program Management, Jason Ronald, whose wisdom was said to be as vast as his beard is long, for an in-depth discussion about what all those fancy Xbox Series X specs will mean for games.

Ronald praised features like ray tracing and the solid-state drive while gameplay b-roll showed us the differences in games like Gears 5 and even Minecraft, where you may be surprised how much ray tracing seemed to make a difference.

Major Nelson himself also emphasized that players can bring their existing external hard drives right over to Series X, even as Microsoft would still love if we all bought their proprietary "storage expansion cards" they've made in partnership with Seagate.

Xbox Game Studios Recap

The foursome of hosts then shifted to briefly reflect on the year so far for Xbox Game Studios, reminding players that Ori and the Will of the Wisps, State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition, and Bleeding Edge are all available now and are a part of Xbox Game Pass.

The hosts then showed off some glimpses of what's to come for XGS, including Minecraft Dungeons on May 26 and Forza Street migrating to mobile platforms on May 5. If you missed the earlier reveal, the team also emphasized the free educational content available in Minecraft, which may help in our new age of homeschooling. For the adults in the room, Gears 5 is free to play through April 12.

New to Xbox Game Pass

As always, if Xbox is presenting, you can expect new Game Pass titles to be announced. Inside Xbox introduced several more to both Xbox Game Pass for console and the PC beta. For those playing with mouse and keyboard, you can expect Football Manager 2020, Stranger Things 3: The Game, and Mistover to land "soon." Console subscribers meanwhile will get to play January's Journey to the Savage Planet very soon. It hits the library on April 9. Next week, the comedic metroidvania also gets its first major DLC, titled Hot Garbage

As for games coming to both platforms, there are a few more. Physics playground Human Fall Flat, retro-RPG Alvastia Chronicles, and the next installment of Kiryu's adventure, Yakuza Kiwami all hit Game Pass "soon."

Lastly, for players in South Korea and Japan, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions will soon be available for the first time. Those players can look to sign up beginning one week from today, April 14.

Gears Tactics Deep Dive

Though console players will need to wait until later this year to try Gears Tactics, we're just a few weeks from its April 28 launch on PC. That means it was time to see a lot more of the game, and so we did.

In today's reveal, we got a heavy dose of gameplay, including some Gears touches that keep this from being an XCOM clone (like lancer chainsaw executions, of course).

We also learned more about the story, like that it stars Kait Diaz's father, Gabe, in a story that exists as a "pre-sequel" to borrow a term from Borderlands, taking place between Marcus' original trilogy and The Coalition's revival.

In case you were hoping to learn "five badass things" about Gears Tactics, Xbox has gone and made that video for you.

New Project xCloud Titles

It's not just Game Pass that grew larger today. The library of free Project xCloud games increased by three courtesy of EA. Players who are streaming via Android or the limited testflight on iOS can now find Unravel 2, The Sims 4, and Dragon Age: Inquisition all available to play right away.

ID@Xbox Spotlight

More games made their debut during today's stream, including several indies making their world debut or sometimes just their Xbox debut. That includes the Hotline Miami series coming to Xbox for the first time ever as the Hotline Miami Collection. Even better, it's available now.

Other indies that got the spotlight include Atomicrops, which is similar to if Stardew Valley was hit by a nuke and irradiated the farmland, as well as The Last Campfire, the next project from Hello Games. While the former got a gameplay reveal trailer, the latter received a much deeper dive of its own, complete with developer commentary.

Xbox Game Bar for PC Updates

While not the most exciting news of the afternoon, PC players will enjoy updates to Xbox Game Bar, including full integration from Razer and Split, making playing and especially streaming games to an audience even easier. Major Nelson stressed that while these apps are now built into the Xbox Game Bar, players can run their original apps if they still prefer to do so. While the update is scheduled for later this year, those who want to preview the features can sign up at insider.windows.com.

Sea of Thieves' Next Major Update

We're never more than a few weeks away from the next huge Sea of Thieves update, so Inside Xbox closed with an expansive look at what's all to come in the second-anniversary update named "Ships of Fortune."

Players have the ability to join trading companies of their choosing as emissaries for brand-new questlines with new cosmetics to unlock. A fifth trading company, the combat-centric Reaper's Bones, now sails the seas too, and across the board, all companies have received new level caps which should entice even the most seasoned Pirate Legends to find their sea legs once again.

Arena mode has been given a major overhaul, making it so combatant ships now fight for a single chest at a time. Players can also revive their allies within a short window of time too. For those who don't mind spending real money on the game's pets, cats finally make their way to the game with the update, joining the already present birds and monkeys. Sorry dog lovers. Keep waiting.

Executive Producer Joe "Three Sheets" Neate tried teasing one more big secret, but he was cut off in a fun scripted moment. Like all updates for the game, Ships of Fortune will be free. It launches on April 22.

From top to bottom, that's everything Major Nelson and company brought to the unconventional work-from-home Inside Xbox stream for April 7. What are you most looking forward to playing?

Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more on Xbox, its lineup of games, and everything Xbox Series X as it breaks.

Deadside

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Bad Pixel
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA
  • \n
\n

Set in a huge open world, Deadside is a hardcore online shooter with survival elements. In many ways, Deadside is not a typical survival game because it mainly focuses on shooting, hunting for enemies, and completing missions.

\n

However, it will have the generally accepted traits of all survival games, such as eating food in order to survive.

\n

The game's primary locations, such as forests, riverlands, and small cities, will be static and remain unchanged, but the inhabitants of these locations will dynamically change. Such places can be occupied by hostile NPCs, and you will have the choice to either to pass by or clear the territory and collect valuable loot.

Grounded

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC, Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA
  • \n
\n

Grounded was recently announced at Microsoft's X02019 event in London. It comes from Obsidian, the developers of The Outer Worlds and Fallout: New Vegas

\n

Grounded features four playable characters and will focus on co-operative gameplay. For example, one player can begin an outline of a building, and other players can finish it.

\n

Each creature in the game, down to the last insect, has its own specific behavior, which varies depending on your actions. For example, killing all aphids in one area will cause ladybugs to migrate to other areas.

\n

In addition, Grounded has a crafting system that is based on items that naturally generate in the world. Having collected the necessary ingredients, you can create a gas mask and visit previously inaccessible biomes with a poisonous atmosphere.

\n

It's survival meets Metroidvania.

\n
    \n
  • Developer: VeCube
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA
  • \n
\n

Polish developer VeCube's new survival game takes place in the Polish section of the Carpathian Mountains. Odludzie is based on Unreal Engine 4 and promises highly realistic graphics.

\n

Involved in a plane crash, Odludzie's protagonist finds himself far from civilization. Deep in the Carpathian forest, he has to rely solely on his skills. As with other survival games like The Forest, his strength and endurance decrease, forcing him to forage and hunt for food, as well as build a suitable shelter.

\n

As expected, players can create primitive weapons and other creative means of obtaining even more and better food. In addition to the standard set of survival elements, the game will also have a variety of puzzles to solve.

Players will act as citizens of an island state, where they will be offered a wide range of gaming opportunities, including owning land, controlling air traffic, participating in water transportation, owning a private business, and, of course, violating the law through a life of crime.

\n

In short, it's an online version of real-life for those who wish to spend some time on a virtual island without leaving their cozy bedroom.

  • Developer: Phobia Game Studio
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: 2020
  • \n
\n

Carrion is a very unusual survival horror game. It puts players in the claws of a monster instead of a victim. It's your job to "spread fear and panic through the [scientific] facility" in which the game takes place, all while staying alive long enough to kill your captors.

\n

As an alien creature that escapes from its cage, players squeeze through air-ducts and stalk narrow halls. Gradually, the creature acquires more devastating abilities, becoming more and more powerful.

\n

\n

Carrion was originally unveiled at E3 2019, and has received rave remarks from those able to preview it.

  • Developer: Donkey Crew
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC
  • \n
  • Release date: TBA
  • \n
\n

Last Oasis is a multiplayer survival game about nomads surviving in a sun-scorched world. After the Earth mysteriously stopped rotating, these nomads hide from the light by traveling in huge wooden machines that act as roving bases.

\n

The cataclysm destroyed many living beings, turning once-prosperous territories into giant deserts and ice mines. Only a narrow strip of space between them, consisting of oases, can support life.

\n

Either playing solo or with a group, players must survive and fight against warring factions of nomads, waging an eternal struggle for resources and territory. Players will also be able to build bases and craft equipment, protecting themselves from invaders or taking the fight to enemy bases.

The Last of Us Part 2

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Naughty Dog
  • \n
  • Platforms: PS4
  • \n
  • Release date: May 29, 2020
  • \n
\n

The sequel to The Last of Us, one of the best survival games ever created, The Last of Us Part 2 is set in a similar post-apocalyptic setting and looks to use similar gameplay elements as TLoU. This time, a grown-up Ellie seems to be the primary focus, though Joel is said to be more than just a passing influence.

\n

Naughty Dog promises an advanced graphics engine will power The Last of Us Part 2, and that there are a number of new enemies to fight. From what we know so far, parts of the game will take place in Seattle, Washington, and that the story is being worked on by Halley Gross, co-writer of Westworld.

\n

With that knowledge, expect another solid single-player experience in The Last of Us Part 2. According to reports, the sequel will not have a multiplayer component, unlike the first game.

Dying Light 2

\n
    \n
  • Developer: Techland
  • \n
  • Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
  • \n
  • Release date: Q1/Q2 2020
  • \n
\n

Dying Light 2 is the sequel to a sensational Dying Light. From what we've seen, the sequel will still employ the series' parkour elements, advanced artificial intelligence, and, of course, the adrenaline pumping gameplay that made the first game such a success.

\n

The events of Dying Light 2 take place 15 years after Dying Light. This time, however, players control a new protagonist. Dying Light 2 is set in a massive open-world called The City, which is four times bigger than the map of the original game.

\n

Also, Techland promises an advanced ecosystem and improved interaction with the world. Though we don't yet know exactly what that means, it sounds great, and we can't wait to learn more.

\n

In the meantime, be sure to check out 26 minutes of Dying Light 2 gameplay from E3 2019.

Survival video games continue to grow in popularity. And it makes sense. From the beginning of time, fighting for survival has been foundational to the human experience.

\n

The survival genre often puts players in harsh situations, pushing them to look for the most creative solutions to complex problems. With the success of survival games such as Ark: Survival Evolved, Don't Starve, Subnautica, DayZ, and Oxygen Not Included, more and more developers are venturing out into the wild unknown.

\n

This selection of upcoming survival video games includes a variety of titles, from sequels to well-established survival games to brand new games supported through Kickstarter campaigns. These are the games to watch in 2020.

Obsidian's Grounded Tasks You with Surviving in Your Deadly Back Garden https://www.gameskinny.com/1ozdf/obsidians-grounded-tasks-you-with-surviving-in-your-deadly-back-garden https://www.gameskinny.com/1ozdf/obsidians-grounded-tasks-you-with-surviving-in-your-deadly-back-garden Fri, 15 Nov 2019 11:42:47 -0500 Josh Broadwell

Grounded is the latest project from The Outer Worlds developer Obsidian. The game was announced during Microsoft's X019 event, and it is slated for an early access release in spring 2020 on Xbox One and Steam.

Part Chibi-Robo, part Honey I Shrunk the Kids, part survival game, Grounded is a co-op survival RPG that follows four teenagers who end up shrunk down to bug size. They now must survive and thrive in the vast wilderness known as the back garden.

The focus in Grounded is very, well, grounded. It steps away from Obsidian's usual sci-fi/fantasy focus — both if which are on prominent display in the excellent The Outer Worlds and equally-good Pillars of Eternity — and emphasizes humans' relationship with nature and perceptions of everyday objects.

This all takes place across a series of themed biomes you won't be able to access right away. Instead, gameplay will play out in a sort of Metroidvania fashion, with players looping back and accessing previously inaccessible areas.

Grounded Director Adam Brennecke told Rock, Paper, Shotgun that the entire team contributed to the game's concept and development, taking ideas as commonplace as how people view a juice box or how people feel when walking their dog and using their essential components to create a completely new experience. Garbage can be a landmark, for example, gnats can be hats, and something as ordinary as a sprinkler can create a flood that impedes your progress.

Bugs are another central focus in Grounded. Some ignore you, others lead you to food, and still, others will turn you into food if you attract too much of their attention.

Brennecke said Obsidian's goal was to integrate nature into the game's survival element as much as possible, but also to streamline those survival aspects and remove their more cumbersome parts, telling RPS:

We’re always looking at, how can we remove some of the annoying friction? ...This is annoying, it’s annoying in other survival games, we have an opportunity to fix this so why don’t we?

Though Grounded's early access launch is coming up fast, Obsidian told RPS it's still looking at things to add to the experience, like interacting with bugs on a more intimate, pet-like level, among other things.

Grounded was only just announced, but you can bet we'll be hearing a lot more about it in the coming months.
