Two Point Hospital

\n

Not to be outdone by Tropico 6, Two Point Hospital also has a Halloween event going on right now. Of course, the hospital sim was already kinda' spooky with ghosts floating about, but things are even more terrifying with the "boo-tiful update."

\n

From now until November 1, players can decorate hospitals with Halloween bits and bobs, listening to scary music over the hospital PA, and duck boisterous bats in the hallways.

\n

Certain illnesses will even get Halloween-themed updates, such as Lightheadedness getting renamed Firghtheadedness, with patients sprouting pumpkins for heads instead of lightbulbs.

\n

those who don't already own the game can grab it for 66% off on Steam until November 1.

Elder Scrolls Blades

\n

The Elder Scrolls Blades is celebrating the spooky season with the Witches Festival. New quests have been added to the game alongside a spell overhaul, new Nightmare Town, and brand-new decorations.

\n

The 1.4 update includes myriad fixes to combat, weapons, armor, items, and more. It even squashes a few pesky bugs. But(!), it doesn't squash spiders, which feature heavily in because Halloween.

Creatures lurk in dark caves and mysteriously abandoned villages dot the land. Are you brave enough to venture out into the land of the living dead?

Hitman 2 is even getting in on the Halloween shenanigans with a special, Halloween-themed Escalation Contract. This new contract is included as part of October's free content update for those who downloaded the Hitman 2 Starter Pack, and it takes place in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.

\n

Along with the obligatory skeletons, pumpkins, and other spooky accouterments, the Contract includes special rewards for those who manage to survive the horror-filled wasteland that awaits them: the Tactical Wetsuit and Bat Shuriken.

Gears 5: Pumpkin Ball and More

\n

Gears 5 is bringing Pumpkin Ball back for Halloween this year, which is basically a pumpkin version of dodgeball, and it's also giving you the chance to earn a special Frankenstein skin by winning 13 matches of Pumpkin Ball before the event ends on November 4.

\n

This isn't your typical game of dodge, er, Pumpkin Ball, though. Players automatically revive unless you target specific, zombie-like weak points, including the head or the universal weakness to massive explosions.

\n

The event started on October 22, with more planned sometime this week as well, so stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

Elder Scrolls Online: The Witches Festival

\n

The Witches Festival returns once more in Elder Scrolls Online, bringing with it a gaggle of ghoulish goodies for your Halloween pleasure. The event starts October 24 at 10am EST and ends November 4 at the same time.

\n

One way to get the party started is earning tons more XP, and to do that, you'll need to complete "The Witchmother's Bargain" quest from the Crown store then use the Whistle you get as a reward.

\n

The Witches Festival has plenty more on offer as well, including Festival-themed collectibles and costumes, Dremora Plunder Skulls (complete with new items) earned through defeating special bosses once per day, and the Glenmoril Armor set.

Mario Kart Tour Halloween Event

\n

Mario Kart Tour is joining in the spooky fun this season, with some sort of Halloween event centered around a Luigi's Mansion course. The official tweet announcing the event only said we can get tricks and treats out of it.

\n\n

Sort of unrelated to the event, but not really because it is Luigi's Mansion after all, is the announcement that Luigi is coming to Mario Kart Tour as of now. (Apparently, he lost his keys and couldn't get there when the game first launched).

\n

Much to Luigi's undoubted dismay, the Halloween event is adding King Boo as a playable character too.

Don't Starve: Hallowed Nights 2019

\n

Klei Entertainment's lovable death simulator Don't Starve Together's Halloween 2019 event is the return of Hallowed Nights, starting October 24. The Klei blog post announcing the event's return said it'll largely include the same things as last year, with a few new treats and tricks.

\n

That means Candy items, Halloween Decorations, and Trinkets you can give to the Pig King for Candy. Candy is good in Don't Starve, because unlike other food items, it never spoils.

\n

Last year's Hallowed Nights also introduced the Mad Science Lab, where you could engineer a number of potions with a variety of positive effects — but at the expense of your sanity.

\n

Though not technically part of Hallowed Nights, October 24 is when we'll see Wurt the Merm make her debut in Don't Starve as well.

Dragalia Lost: Halloween Fantasia 2

Dragalia Lost's popular Halloween Fantasia event returns as the game's big Spooktober event, bringing with it new items, quests, and summons. It all kicks off at 2am October 18.

\n

First is the Trick or Treasure! Facility Event, which introduces Nightmare difficulty, new items to obtain, and more. It's accompanied by a new set of Daily and Live Endeavors that'll run through October 31 as well.

\n

Thanks to Perfectly-Nintendo distilling the patch notes, we also know the special Halloween Fantasia summoning event will include the following:

\n
    \n
  • Halloween Mym (Adventurer)
  • \n
  • Halloween Maritimus (Dragon)
  • \n
  • Halloween Lowen (Adventurer)
  • \n
  • Halloween Odetta (Adventurer)

Sea of Thieves: Fort of the Damned

\n

Things are taking a decidedly spooky turn for Xbox One and Windows 10 players this month in Sea of Thieves. The game's monthly content update this time around is, naturally, Halloween related, and it's no barebones update either.

\n

Old Boot Fort has been overrun by the forces of evil, turning it into the Fort of the Damned, managed by the Shadow of Fate Skeletons.

\n

This fort can be activated as long as the requirements are met, and it brings with it new Voyages, new Contracts from Duke, and some big rewards. More importantly, these additions aren't just for October; they'll continue on as a permanent part of the game.

\n

There'll also be new arena rules, new items and pets from the Emporium, and even a new way to play Shanties. The full details are here.

Fallout '76 Mischief Night

\n

Fallout '76's Halloween event this year is Mischief Night, letting you take full advantage of the day to wreak utter havoc on Whitespring. Mischief Night kicks off at noon EST on October 26 and runs until the same time on November 5, and it begins "every hour, on the hour." It's a public event, which means free fast travel too.

\n

You'll start off at the Mischief Pyre near the Springhouse Gazebo, and after hearing about the rogue Eyebot JES-2R's dark plans, you're in for a quick tour of the resort area.

\n

From there, you can destroy property and vehicles, vandalize buildings, risk getting tricked at one of the treat bowls, and basically do whatever your little black heart desires — as long as the Whitespring Elite Security Force doesn't catch you.

\n

Complete JES-2R's missions to earn rewards, and wearing or crafting your own costume helps further your progress towards unlockables.

\n

Check out the full details here.

For Honor's Otherworld 2019 Event

\n

For the past two years, Ubisoft's For Honor has hosted an event centering around the Otherworld concept, with plenty of spooky challenges, quests, special rewards, Halloween versions of familiar characters, and of course, loads of lootable gear.

\n

The event usually runs well beyond Halloween too. As yet, like with many others, there aren't any concrete details about For Honor's Halloween event, but we'll update as soon as we find out more.

Hearthstone Hallow's End: Doom in the Tomb

\n

Blizzard finally lifted the lid on Hearthstone's Hallow's End 2019 event. This year's special Halloween event is Doom in the Tomb; it starts October 8 at 10 a.m. PDT/1 p.m. EDT and runs for three weeks until October 30 at 9 a.m. PDT/12 p.m. EDT.

\n

As always, there'll be unique Tavern Brawls with rewards for completing missions under a certain time, plus trials in the Haunted Temple for both good and E.V.I.L. to overcome. Naturally, the Headless Horseman will be making his appearance as well.

\n

Some of the Tomb's treasures might seem familiar to longtime players as well, with classic cards like the Druid, Imp Gang Boss, and Imp Burglard making a return.

\n

There's a lot more involved, and you can read about it plus all the rewards on offer here.

Killing Floor 2: Grim Treatments

\n

Tripwire Studios' Killing Floor 2 Halloween event is already underway, with the launch of Grim Treatments earlier this month.

Grim Treatment is a free update that brings in a variety of Halloween Zeds, up to their ears (or whatevers) in blood and gore, a brand-new map in the form of Ashwood Asylum, special cosmetic items, and Nuked Objective Mode.

Nuked has special quests and cutscenes, but the main objective centers around the attempt to rescue a small child in the aftermath of nuclear fallout, and of course, there are plenty of Zeds trying to stop you.

League of Legends The Harrowing 2019

\n

The Harrowing is basically an institution in League of Legends. It's a yearly fright-fest that ties in with the game's lore, focusing on the Black Mist and, well, death. Because it's Halloween.

\n

The big draw in The Harrowing tends to be the special Champion skins on offer, plus various ranks of gear, and plenty of other additions to get you in the Halloween spirit.

\n

So far, there's absolutely nothing about this year's Harrowing, but since we're well into October now, that'll likely change soon.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 Halloween Event

\n

There will, in fact, be a Star Wars Battlefront 2 Halloween event this year. Shared on EA Star Wars' official Twitter account, the event will begin on October 23 and end on October 31.

The event will center around the Ewok hunt on Endor, which, unsurprisingly, will be at night.

Dead by Daylight Withering Blight Event

\n

This year's Dead by Daylight Hallowed Blight event, called Withering Blight, was leaked during the Stranger Things event over the summer. That said, only the existence of the Halloween event was leaked. Since then, we've learned a little bit more.

\n

The event will run from October 22 to November 1. Not only will it bring "spooky decorations" to the world of Dead by Daylight, but items from Halloweens past, including:

\n
    \n
  • The Will O' Wisp flashlight
  • \n
  • The All Hallows' Eve lunchbox
  • \n
  • The Pustula Petals offering
  • \n
\n

Per the game's official blog:

\n
\n

You can find these limited-time items scattered throughout newly generated Bloodwebs and in chests for the duration of the event. You will keep any leftover items and be able to use them year round, but be warned: Any unused Pustula Petals will stay in your inventory, but will not be useable after the event period.

\n

Following feedback from the Hallowed Blight event last year, Pustula Petals will instead create a pair of event Hooks and Generators for each Offering used. Survivors who burn one of these Offerings will receive bonus Bloodpoints whenever an event Generator is powered, and Killers receive a bonus each time a Survivor is hooked on a special event Hook. If you don’t burn an Offering, you’ll still receive some bonus Bloodpoints, but not as many as those who do.

\n
\n

The event will also bring new challenges and rewards to Dead by Daylight. Putrid Serum will be a new currency for the event, which can be used to acquire cosmetics. Though there are a finite number of these items in the event, finding them all will net you "six hallowed cosmetics."

\n

Last year's event featured an adrenaline-filled rush to gather antitoxins to fend off an army of mutated creatures bent on destroying everything in sight, plus the slightly less tense inclusion of new items and gear.

Rainbow Six Siege Halloween Event

\n

Last year, Ubisoft treated us to the Mad House Halloween event in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, and while the company's been silent so far about this year's Halloween event, a set of rather frightening looking skins was recently leaked.

\n

obutu3_ posted a video on YouTube showing off new skins for Doc, Ela, and Vigil, among others, all of which are pretty obviously meant for Halloween.

\n

If it's anything like last year, expect to see plenty of Halloween decorations around the Rainbow Six Siege world and, hopefully, see the previous year's skins available again as well.

Call of Duty Halloween 2019

\n

Just like we can count on a new Call of Duty game every year, we can count on a Call of Duty Halloween event, too. Only — Activision hasn't announced one yet.

\n

Last year's was all about Black Ops, and the year before focused on Infinite Warfare. This year saw Call of Duty Mobile finally launch, so it's possible any new event could center around that since Modern Warfare won't release until October 25. Of course, we could also see something in Black Ops 4 ...

\n

Either way, these usually involve the same thing: new skins, stickers, and gear, all won through reaching specific tier levels and completing certain missions.

\n

Stay tuned for more.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery Halloween Event

\n

Harry Potter and Halloween are perfect matches for each other, not least because something interesting — or deadly — always happens on Halloween.

\n

Hogwarts Mystery will be no different this year. The game's official Twitter account teased the game's Dark Arts Month earlier this month on Twitter.

We know what's going on with Wizards Unite, but we're still in the dark about Hogwarts

PUBG Halloween 2019

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is getting a special set of Halloween skins this year. They're pretty much what you'd expect from Halloween costumes, too, ranging from The Wizard of Oz-themed Kansas and Scarecrow sets to pirate gear, and more, though the, er, happy Lion costume has received some changes since it first launched.

Rocket League Haunted Hallows

\n

Psyonix has revealed new information regarding Rocket League's Halloween 2019 event. This year, things get a little peculiar with the game's Stranger Things crossover during the Haunted Hallows event.

\n

The Farmstead map gets transformed into the Upside-Down, reminiscent of the opening portions from Stranger Things Season 2. The map is now steeped in red with the Mind Flayer lurking in the background.

\n

The event runs from October 14 to November 11. During that time, players can earn unique toppers, banners, titles, decals, avatar borders and more. These fiendish flourishes will be available for a certain number of Candy Corn, which players can earn by playing matches.

\n

There are even golden pumpkins that hold special surprises.

Apex Legends Fight or Fright

\n

Respawn Entertainment will be adding a bevy of Halloween goodies and tweaks to Apex Legends with the first ever Fight or Fright event, starting October 15 and running through until November 5.

Fight or Fright introduces new cosmetic items for weapons and Legends, some of which can be obtained through completing special, limited-time challenge missions.

Legends who fall in battle will be reborn as zombies and receive new abilities, like a vicious melee attack and, in true Titanfall fashion, the ability to run up walls.

Once the field only has 10 living Legends left, the game changes to an escape mode. It's a race for the 10 Legends to make it to the evacuation ship while the undead zombie Legends do all they can to stop the evacuation from happening.

Bloodborne: The Official Return to Yharnam

5 MMOs That Need to Be Ported to the Switch https://www.gameskinny.com/wspr8/5-mmos-that-need-to-be-ported-to-the-switch https://www.gameskinny.com/wspr8/5-mmos-that-need-to-be-ported-to-the-switch Tue, 19 Sep 2017 13:12:55 -0400 adelgirl

Not too long ago, Nintendo fans found out that beloved MMO Dragon Quest X will be ported to the Switch. While this was invigorating news in and of itself, it's also set a precedent for fans to look forward to seeing other MMOs make their way to the console. And surely some developers are investigating whether or not their MMO games will work on the system.

There is a possibility that Dragon Quest X will be the only MMO we ever see on the Switch, but that's unlikely to be the case. There are so many other popular MMO games out there that would be perfect for the console-hybrid platform. And there are a few that we would love to see make the move to the Switch. We don't have any official information on whether the following games can actually be ported, but we can hope anyway!

1. Final Fantasy XIV

There has already been some talk about porting FFXIV to the Nintendo Switch, but nothing definite revealed thus far. If it does make the move, this MMO would be a real treat for Switch owners.

With many classes and races to choose from, and a ton of in-game content and numerous expansions to play through, there's a lot to love about FFXIV. It's already proven to be successful on the PS4, so it's not hard to imagine that it could be similarly successful on the Switch as well.

2. Tera

Tera is a more recent MMO that might be a good fit for the Switch. For players who enjoy customization and creating tons of different characters, this is the perfect massively multiplayer experience. There are many different classes and races to choose from (and branching customization options based on your choices), and the game adds a new race of class each year.

It's possible that we won't ever see this game on the Switch because of its 18+ rating, but the recent bout of mature games announced for the console means there's still hope. With a console port for the PS4 and Xbox One in the works, there's also the possibility of Tera getting a Switch version as well.

3. MapleStory

While MapleStory is old, it's still a great MMO -- and one that I think would be perfect for the Switch since it's more family-friendly than a lot of other MMOs. This MMO is also less graphically intensive than some of its more fantastical counterparts, so it would demand a little bit less of the Switch than other games.

In spite of its simpler graphics, though, there's plenty of customization abounding in Maple Story -- especially with the multiple class options, and the chance to add more with a Switch port.

4. Elder Scrolls Online

Since Skyrim is already coming to the Switch, it seems like The Elder Scrolls Online would be a good next step for Bethesda in regards to Switch ports. Considering how all the systems that currently have Skyrim also have Elder Scrolls Online, it seems likely that the Switch could see this MMO in the next few years.

Should that be the case, Nintendo fans will have plenty of content to sink their teeth into, as ESO comes packed with multiple classes and customization options, different starting areas, and numerous expansions as well.

5. Black Desert Online

Black Desert Online is a more recent MMO that's become a pretty big hit in North America. With releases planned for the PS4 and Xbox One, it doesn't seem far-fetched to think that there could be a Switch version in the future.

BDO offers a number of classes and races, as well as in-depth character customization and consistent content updates to keep the game feeling fresh. Its vibrant and detailed graphics would certainly test how much visual intensity the Switch system can actually handle.

---

That wraps up our list! What MMOs would you like to see come to the Switch in the next few years. Let us know down in the comments!

All Classes in One Beast Tamer: Latest MapleStory Class https://www.gameskinny.com/lp6bx/all-classes-in-one-beast-tamer-latest-maplestory-class https://www.gameskinny.com/lp6bx/all-classes-in-one-beast-tamer-latest-maplestory-class Wed, 22 Jan 2014 10:40:12 -0500 Synzer

MapleStory just released their latest update, which includes a new class. Chase, the beast tamer, is both something you have never seen before and oddly familiar. The storyline has Chase being a new hero, such as Phantom or Evan, but you must first prove yourself.

Beast Tamer Skills

The Zero class sought to change MapleStory by adding the first class with two different play styles. That was cool and all, but the beast tamer blows it out of the water with the amount of things you can do. The Beast Tamer is a magician class and uses INT as the main stat. It also uses a scepter as its main weapon and whistle as its secondary weapon.

There are four distinct play style for the Beast Tamer and they all share the same skill points. You have to choose which route to go down, but you can still afford to put some points in other beasts. Any boost or attacks you get only apply if you stay in that beast mode. So you can't gain an INT boost from Bear mode while attacking in Snow Leopard mode for instance.

The four beasts are, bear, snow leopard, hawk, and cat. I'll break down each beast so you can get a better picture.

Bear - Pummeling foes with sheer force

The bear is the powerhouse of the four, which makes perfect sense. The bear will do high damage, but it is not very quick initially. Later, you get extra attacks added passively and an attack speed increase. This is most like the Warrior class.

What really makes the bear great is the Majestic Trumpet skill. This skill sets ana rea on fire and lasts for 15 seconds at max level. This skill is great for training because you set down fire in one area, killing everything that spawns there, then continue fighting at other spots of the map.

nexon.net

The bear has plenty of passive skills that increase overall damage and critical hit damage. It also gives defense, stance, health, and auto revive while you stay in Bear mode. This mode will be great for boss killing.

Snow Leopard - Pounce through the battlefield swift attacks

The snow leopard has many fast attacks and can even heal yourself while attacking. This is most like the Bandit or Brawler class.

The passive skill, Leopard Hide, allows you to restore your health by 8% of the damage you deal when you max the skill.

There are passive abilities that increase damage, movement speed, and attack speed. For a mix between speed and damage, Snow Leopard mode is the way to go.

Hawk - Get to where you need to go faster than ever

If you want speed, then you want the hawk. You will travel through maps faster than you will believe. You will jump higher than ever and even be able to fly while attacking.

There are some nice team skills that raise attack, critical attack, and movement speed. You can even summon a party member and create a portal to the nearest town for all party members to use. This class is most like the Bowman and Assassin classes.

If you love to move fast and attack fast, then Hawk mode is for you. The portal and summoning skills can even be useful if you decide to use another mode for attacking.

Cat - Supporting teams like a boss

For the ultimate in support, choose Cat Mode. Take a Dark Knight, a Bishop, mix them together, then add more support, and you get Cat Mode.

This mode will increase health, mana, experience, overall damage, critical damage, item drop chance, and ignore defense of enemies passively. You can also heal, deal decent damage, revive teammates, and cure status effects while in this mode. Simply put, this class is the best support you can ask for.

Nexon.net

I love this class so much. It lets players choose different play styles for different situations and there are some unique skills as well. It loses points for being very similar to other classes in the game, but the sheer number of possibilities and key unique abilities make up for it.

Visit MapleStory's official website for the full patch notes and to see what else this update added.

If you've contemplated coming back or starting, do it now. This class is one of the best things added to MapleStory. If you have any questions or comments, let me know in the section below!

If there is one thing you can bet on, it is that MapleStory will come up with a new class for players to try. Currently, there 33 classes to choose from, if you count the different branches you can choose from. The latest one is the Beast Tamer, as advertised on Nexon's website. Although it is not the first pet class in the game, (Evan was first with the dragon), it is the first to use multiple pets and has many different styles to play as.

The Beast Tamer is a magician class, so it uses the INT stat. It can use four different modes, bear, snow leopard, hawk, and cat. It boasts over 70 unique skills, with 20 of them being attacks. It seems this class will have several styles fo play to choose from.

A new class is surprising, so soon after adding Zero and the huge Red update, but Nexon is always adding new classes. If anything, they get players back into the game to try them out. I know I will be playing the new class when it releases, so it really is an effective strategy.

The class' release date has not yet been announced. Visit the official Beast Tamer website for more info.

What do you think of the Beast Tamer? Can't wait to try it out? Let me know in the comments!.

Enter Zero: New MapleStory Class https://www.gameskinny.com/4wngy/enter-zero-new-maplestory-class https://www.gameskinny.com/4wngy/enter-zero-new-maplestory-class Wed, 18 Dec 2013 13:25:58 -0500 Synzer

MapleStory just released their second RED update, which includes a new class called Zero. Zero is very unique as it is actually two characters in one, a first for MapleStory. It also starts at level 100 and has its own storyline.

You play as a boy and a girl and because of that you cannot pick gender at character creation. Alpha is the boy and Beta is the girl. The time goddess Rhine created a "child" from her tears to fight against the Black Mage, but the child was split into two by his minions.

You start the game as Alpha and slowly uncover the truth and reunite with Beta. After this, you begin your long journey through the Mirror World.

The Mirror World is separate from the Maple World, but the areas are modeled after the Maple World. You cannot gain experience, items, or basically do anything in the Maple World until you complete the entire Zero story. The story consists of eight chapters and ends at level 180. This will probably take a while, but you can at least party with other Zero players in the process.

The story is interesting and it is very clear what you must do. I have only completed the first chapter, but the quests do not take a long time and they involve going into dungeons.

Dungeons have multiple stages to them and they are where you will get your quest items. You also get a huge bonus of experience for completing them, as well as time coins. Time coins are used to buy various items for Zero.

The best part about the class is the combat. Alpha has a long sword and specializes in quick, multi-target attacks. Beta has a broadsword and specializes in slow, single-target attacks.

Each skill is set for either Alpha or Beta ans using a skill of the opposite character will automatically tag them in. For three seconds after the switch, both characters will attack at the same time. As soon as it is over you can switch back, or keep fighting as that character. This gives players a variety of attacks, as well as strategy of when to use a certain character.

There are plenty of other things in the update, which you can find by reading the patch notes on MapleStory's official website. I have not even started on any of the other content, but this looks like the best addition to MapleStory in a long time. If you are not already playing, now would be a good time to start!

MapleStory 2 Launching in South Korea in 2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/jjdho/maplestory-2-launching-in-south-korea-in-2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/jjdho/maplestory-2-launching-in-south-korea-in-2014 Wed, 06 Nov 2013 19:46:19 -0500 Ashley Shankle

MapleStory has been live in South Korea since 2003, isn't it about time it got a sequel? Nexon and developer Wizet seem to agree: MapleStory 2 is reportedly scheduled to be released in 2014.

MMO Culture reports MapleStory 2 to be a 'full 3D (quarter view)' game, which perhaps points to a similar camera style we see in games like Ragnarok Online. Considering MapleStory's 2D engine and visuals, this would be a not-very-surprising step up.

The game's official Korean website is up, but sorely lacking in information. There is a tiny teaser trailer to be seen in the clouds, if you can find it.

Whether or not MapleStory 2 will make a welcome addition to the modern MMO space is a big question mark for the time being, but it's been a long time coming with the original game having reached 10 years in service this year.

Asia's Growing Influence on the US Games Industry https://www.gameskinny.com/f849z/asias-growing-influence-on-the-us-games-industry https://www.gameskinny.com/f849z/asias-growing-influence-on-the-us-games-industry Tue, 29 Oct 2013 16:58:23 -0400 Synzer

One interesting panel at Games Beat today was about Asian influence growing in the US. Many gamers know there are a lot of free-to-play games out there. They also know that most of them have come from Asia. Google free-to-play MMO and you will find a ton of them out there. Some come from US companies, but not many, and usually not the same model as Asia.

Free-to-Play versus Pay-to-Play

The free to play model has been prevalent in eastern countries for far longer than in the west. The eastern and western business models for games were polar opposites for a time. Some places in Asia may have only seen free-to-play models and practically no hard copies of games, and some places in the US were only familiar with hard copies, with no exposure to free-to-play.

The influence of Asian games business models is growing the in the US now. Many MMOs, including Star Wars: The Old Republic, have started doing free-to-play models for their games. There is usually a certain negativity that comes along with free-to-play in the US that doesn't exist in Asia. Most of that is the quality of free-to-play games created in the US.

F2P does not have to mean low quality

Many F2P mobile and computer games in the US suffer from low quality, copying, hidden fees, or sometimes all of the above. Not every F2P Asian game is high quality and they suffer from the same problems, but they offset that with many quality games, as well.

Free-to-play is about creating a great experience and keeping players there. - Owen Mahoney

The speaker for this panel was Nexon's Chief Financial Officer, Owen Mahoney. Nexon is a well established company in Asia for over 15 years, but has little influence in the US. A very popular game they created, that many western players are familiar with, is MapleStory.

In 2012, Nexon generated more than $1.3 billion in revenue and over 40 percent of operating margins. They are clearly doing something right and 90% of their customers never even pay anything. F2P is different in Asia, which is why they make so much money.

When is F2P actually free?
If you cannot realistically progress in the game without paying, then it is not free to play. - Owen Mahoney

Many US free-to-play games are not truly free. They require you to get others to play so you can progress, limited access unless you pay, or absurd wait times if you don't. MapleStory, for example, is a free-to-play MMO. They have what is called a cash shop, which has things players can buy with real money.

Nearly all of it is cosmetic or convenience, but you won't have any less of an experience if you don't use it. Even though the game is free and nothing is needed from the cash shop, many players spend a lot of money in it. Some players end up paying hundreds or even thousands just in the cash shop in only a couple of years.

This makes up for it being free-to-play by getting more people to play it, getting more money from some people than if they just bought the game. There is also no pressure to do it because it isn't necessary, so the quality doesn't drop.

Owen Mahoney also talked about the hope that more US game developers adopt the free to play model, but with quality and not copying another game already out there. He thinks that if we combine "eastern free-to-play models, with western sensibility" the games industry as a whole will improve. I would have to agree with him.

What do you think about the free-to-play model? Should it be the norm in gaming, or should the US stick with its current business models? Discuss in the comments.

MapleStory Cygnus Awakening Update https://www.gameskinny.com/rzwt9/maplestory-cygnus-awakening-update https://www.gameskinny.com/rzwt9/maplestory-cygnus-awakening-update Sun, 15 Sep 2013 15:56:56 -0400 Synzer

MapleStory's newest update does a huge revamp of the Cygnus Knight classes. For those that do not know, the Cygnus Knights were based off the adventurer classes, but with slightly different moves and an element.

For example, the thunder breaker class is almost identical to the pirate brawler class. The only difference is the addition of lightning element to some attacks and a few exclusive skills. They could also level faster than other classes, but could only go to level 120. The other classes could go to level 200.

The Cygnus Awakening update completely changes all that. All their skills have been completely revamped, and many new skills were added. They can now level to the new level cap of 250. Two of the old Knights, Blaze Wizard and Night Walker, are no longer available. They also have hyper skills, so they are equal to other characters.

This is a huge and needed update for the Cygnus Knights. They were little more than clones of other classes before and on top of that, could only go to level 120. After more and more updates came out, they were fairly useless. This update gives them all their own skills, revamps how they work, and increases their level cap. There is plenty of reason now to pick one.

Personally, I chose the Thunder Breaker, but all seem worth trying.

What do you think of the latest MapleStory patch? Do you agree with the changes to Cygnus Knights, or did you like them the way they were? Let me know in the comments.

Psy-ber Attack! Korean Pop-Star Takes Over Combat Arms and Maple Story Europe https://www.gameskinny.com/ws9dl/psy-ber-attack-korean-pop-star-takes-over-combat-arms-and-maple-story-europe https://www.gameskinny.com/ws9dl/psy-ber-attack-korean-pop-star-takes-over-combat-arms-and-maple-story-europe Fri, 30 Aug 2013 17:21:38 -0400 Destrolyn.Bechgeddig

Charismatic Korean pop-star Psy has taken over two of Nexon Europe's online games, Combat Arms and Maple Story. Why? We're not sure, apart from using the singer's popularity to bring in the punters and keep players interested.

Thankfully, much like bubonic plague, these events are only available in Europe. Whether the Psy-tastic events will ship state-side is yet to be seen.

For more serious gamers - and haters - this is probably product placement at its most shameless and unimaginative. After follow-up single "Gentleman" not achieving the same cult status as "Gangnam Style," it's anyone's guess as to who's trying to profit off this bewildering cameo; Nexon Europe, or the superstar himself. But for those who like to take things a little less seriously, it's just a bit of cooky and harmless fun.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Psy

Maple Story sees Psy-themed quests. One is to help Psy find items for his big concert: "Twinkle Marbles" and clothes. The other is to rescue him from being kidnapped by space aliens, with help from the Moon Bunnies.

There are also Psy-themes items to buy, including clothing and avatar customizations.

Psy has lost his show's sparkle...and his clothes!

Explosive Hits

In online multiplayer FPS, Combat Arms, Psy takes more of a backseat in the "Psy-Blitz" event. Players can purchase garish pieces of armour and weaponry using in-game credit, including a permanent pink or baby-blue automatic guns, the latter sporting the title of Psy's last single "Gentleman."

Oppa Facebook Style

In conjunction with these two events, there's also a Facebook campaign. The more likes the games receive on their respective Facebook pages, the more free in-game goodies all players get.

Psy in Maple Story is ongoing until September 18th 2013. Psy-Blitz continues until September 24th 2013. For more information about Maple Story and Combat Arms Europe, visit http://en.maplestory.nexoneu.com and http://en.combatarms.nexoneu.com.

My Guilty Gaming Pleasure: MapleStory https://www.gameskinny.com/xz1fl/my-guilty-gaming-pleasure-maplestory https://www.gameskinny.com/xz1fl/my-guilty-gaming-pleasure-maplestory Fri, 16 Aug 2013 00:46:17 -0400 Ryan Chizmar

We all have our guilty pleasures. Whether it's those steamy romance novels or cheesy 80's movies, usually there's something you like that other people might find a little odd or embarrassing.

Of course, I too have my share of guilty pleasures with one guilty gaming pleasure being MapleStory.

If you're into MMORPGs chances are you've heard of it. But if you haven't, it is a 2D side-scrolling MMORPG with anime-style graphics. Like most MMORPGs, it's a game where you create a character from many different class archetypes and embark on your own adventure.

I started playing way back in the beta phase in late 2004 and I've played on and off ever since. It certainly has changed since then, some ways good and others bad as all things tend to do, but there's just something about it that always seems to drag me back in.

Me (Zxion) pwning at HoH. That was max damage at the time...but I only hit max because of a glitch, haha

At first the game was fairly basic in its ways: go kill mobs, buy or find equipment in-game, level up and learn new skills. There were only 4 main classes to choose from and each had two different job advancements.

These days there are around 30 different classes, along with a whole bunch of areas to explore and monsters to kill. Instead of just buying equipment from an in-game shop or finding them when you kill mobs, you can also make your own items with the in-game crafting system.

Also, instead of just basic weapon stats, you should worry about getting a good potential on an item because they give percent stat increases (which is crazy good). So, to make sure you have a good one, you have to buy an item called a potential cube from the cash shop which gives you a random potential each time. A lot of them are really bad, so this eventually turns into paying a ton of money just for a chance at finally making the item you want.

Dat staff...

Since so many people are looking for good potentials on items, this leads to seedy activity in the game. Such as people advertising the sale of NX (the cash shop currency you buy with real money to buy virtual goods in-game) for in-game currency as well as the sale of items for real money on third-party websites.

Don't do it! It sounds awesome, but I assure you, it most likely isn't!

Such websites however are usually a scam where people either take your money or they try to take your account info. Also, since it's so hard to get such items, there are hackers who create fake items and sell those as well, whether it be in-game or on a website. This leads to a somewhat unfriendly community where people bicker back and forth.

Even though there are times it might not seem as great a game as it once was, I still find myself coming back. Indeed, through all the virtual muck there are truly some hidden gems to be found. Although I like the gameplay and I guess I'm somewhat of an addict, I guess the main reason I come back to the game is to talk to the people I spent all of those hours with trying to hit max level. All of those hours trying to take down the hardest bosses in the game.

What a noob, he killed himself in guild HQ, lol.

Those people are my guildmates. Although I only met them about a year and a half ago I consider them really good friends. If you can find a really good guild it makes the game 1000% better and you are sure to meet people who you'd call friends for life.

At least I know I have.

How about you? Do you have a guilty gaming pleasure? Let me know in the comments below! Maybe I'll get to add another one to the list!

MapleStory's Monster Life Video Walkthrough https://www.gameskinny.com/kfafe/maplestorys-monster-life-video-walkthrough https://www.gameskinny.com/kfafe/maplestorys-monster-life-video-walkthrough Tue, 04 Jun 2013 16:20:39 -0400 Raven Hathcock

MapleStory has released a new video explaining all the pleasures of Monster Life.

If you don't know what it is, Monster Life is an online farm in MapleStory where you can grow your own monsters. It's pretty adorable, like most of MapleStory. By participating in the farm you can earn some pretty cool rewards. Even though you can only have one farm per character, each character can have its own farm.

So how do you create you own farm?

Get your farm

First, in the menu, click the visit farm button. Then you can name your farm whatever you want - oh the possibilities. After this you can upload a profile picture so that you can interact with other members of MapleStory. You can even customize the farms. In the Monster Life Shop, you can purchase buildings, expand your farm, change backgrounds and much more. This is all with the special Monster Life currency, Waru, which you obtain through farming. You can also use gems to buy special content only available for purchase with gems.

Monsters!

After you post a profile picture, you'll be taken through a tutorial that will eventually give you your first monster. From then on you can start taming monsters by visiting the Monster Life Shop and purchasing Monster Boxes.

There are more than 600 hundred monsters for you to chose from. You can either purchase them through the Monster Life Shop, or combine two monsters. Combining monsters is the only way to create new and original monsters. With this ability, think of all the cool monsters you can come up with! Using your monster dictionary will help you discover all the various combinations available.

The only downside is that you can only have 28 monsters per farm. That seems a bit limiting.  Although, if you release monsters, you'll a Waru refund so you aren't losing out too much.

Leveling

Leveling can be achieved through making purchases with Waru and gaining Decor points. The higher your level, the more you can buy in the Monster Life Shop. Just think about all the cute stuff you'll be getting by the time you max out at level 40.

Your monsters can also make it to level 40 by taking care of them. The higher they get, the more likely they will be able to help boost your character in the game. Certain monsters will boost certain classes, so be on the look out for which monster will help you out the most.

I suggest that everyone interested in Monster Life check out the video and experience the Monster Life farm for yourself.

200,000 MapleStory Players Quest for Charity https://www.gameskinny.com/echvq/200-000-maplestory-players-quest-for-charity https://www.gameskinny.com/echvq/200-000-maplestory-players-quest-for-charity Tue, 20 Nov 2012 15:44:12 -0500 Ashley Shankle

MapleStory held a quest event early last month to raise money toward charity:water, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing clean water to regions in the world that need it. More than 200,000 players participated in the quests, leading to $10,000 being donated to the cause.

Lasting from late September to early October, players had to complete two quests to show their support for the cause and to maybe learn a little bit about what charity:water is all about.

Players had to fill the gauge monitoring the charity's progress, which went up with each quest completed. The first quest had players collecting water droplets from monsters, while the second quest had them hold a water container for 30 minutes.

The $10,000 MapleStory players raised was paired with Karma Koin's donation of $250,000 to charity:water, making the total donated to the cause $260,000. Karma Koin is also owned by Nexon.

Nexon's donation has gone toward the charity's efforts to bring safe, clean water to Rwanda. The donation will be used to bring a clean water system to 3,600 people in the Rulindo district of the country.
