And there you have it, the highest-rated Xbox One games on the market. From Ori and the Blind Forest to Titanfall, and everything in between, the Xbox One is clearly a pretty great place to play games with something for everyone.

\n

It will be very interesting to see if this list changes any in the coming months, what with Halo 5: Guardians, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Forza Motorsport 6, and Fable Legends, not to mention third-party games like Fallout 4, Star Wars: Battlefront, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and Mad Max, all coming out before Christmas. This list could look very different in a year's time and lets hope it does!

1. The Witcher 3 - 91%
\n

And no surprise here, we have CD Projeckt Red's RPG masterpiece, The Witcher 3. We also recently published The 15 Highest Rated PS4 Games, and The Witcher 3 was also atop that list. So it's fairly undeniable that Geralt's final journey is the best game on current-gen platforms.

\n

With a gigantic open world that demands to be explored in the greatest depth, a myriad of side-quests that are as long and interesting as many games' whole stories, a fantastic cast of characters to meet along the way, graphics that have to be seen to be believed, and a great story to cap off the trilogy, The Witcher 3 is quite possibly the best RPG ever made.

\n
\n

"The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a thoughtful, diverse, and frequently awe-inspiring adventure. Its stories are deep and satisfying, unafraid to touch on themes of personal character, presenting players with choices and consequences that aren’t about turning into a hero or a villain. In the end, it’s quite simply one of the best RPGs ever made."

2. Fifa 14 - 88%
\n

The second entry in the Fifa series to make it on to this list, but rather surprisingly it is the older, 2014 edition that sneaks into 2nd place. Even though Fifa games supposedly get better with each iteration, a belief I too have held, critics disagreed and rank the Xbox One debut game as the best out there.

\n

"A great demonstration of how to craft a new console launch game, leveraging the machine's strengths with a new engine capable not only of giving the game a renewed look but improved gameplay as well."

3. Ori and the Blind Forest - 88%
\n

And here we have the second, and last, Xbox One exclusive on the list. Ori and the Blind Forest is emotional story-telling at its absolute finest and a truly awe-inspiring, albeit challenging, journey through a beautifil world.

\n

Ori and the Blind Forest is a MetroidVania game with RPG elements, not so dissimilar to Child of Light, but it is also a deceptively tricky platformer underneath a charming and very pretty art-style. As its debut game, you can expect Moon Studios to be a major player for Xbox One going forward.

\n
\n

"A terrific blend of story, gameplay, and graphics, Ori and the Blind Forest is an unforgettable debut for indie developer Moon Studios."

4. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor - 87%
\n

Undoubtedly one of the surprise hits of last year, Shadow of Mordor was an excellent game with innovative features, not to mention thousands of Orcs to kill.

\n

With a great open-world and the awesome Nemesis system, which creates rivalries between you and Orcs as well as a genuine power struggle, Shadow of Mordor wasn't the simple Lord of the Rings spin-off everyone expected. The gameplay was a mix of Batman and Assassin's Creed, the world was fittingly barren and bleak, the story simple but effective. The overall package was something special. A sequel is guaranteed!

5. Shovel Knight - 86%
\n

If you enjoy old-school side scrolling games like Mega Man, CastleVania, Duck Tales, etc., then you will love Shovel Knight. As much of a love letter as any game can be, Shovel Knight is a fantastic throwback to games of yore, while adding a modern sheen to the look, mechanics, and level design.

6. Forza Horizon 2 - 86%
\n

Playground Games have worked year after year to make the Forza series a worthy competitor to Gran Turismo. Even though the two series have markedly different styles, one being arcadey and the other a sim, Forza has definitely become the top racing game on the market.

\n

Yearly installments allow the developer to make the series better with every iteration, while dominating public mindshare. But it isn't just consistency that makes Forza great, it's the graphics and the gameplay. Forza Horizon 2 exemplifies this with its open-world gameplay, dynamic weather, day and night cycles, and a huge range of cars to choose from.

7. Mortal Kombat X - 86%
\n

NetherRealm Studios' ultra-violent fighting game made a resounding debut on Xbox One. Mortal Kombat X was every bit as gross, competitive, and fun as we hoped it would be.

\n

After a few failed experiments from the PS2 generation, NetherRealm has really found what makes Mortal Kombat great and are doing it with the utmost style. Embracing the ridiculousness of the series and continually tweaking the gameplay has made Mortal Kombat X one of the best fighting games in recent memory, and the best on Xbox One.

8. Titanfall - 86%
\n

As one of only two Xbox One exclusives on this list, Titanfall stands high as the consoles highest rated AAA game to date! It may surprise you, considering few talk about the game anymore, but Titanfall was incredibly well-received when it was released.

\n

Titanfall is an incredibly tight FPS multiplayer game that lets you play as wall-running soldiers, or huge mechanical Titans. It's easy to forget how hotly-anticipated it was, but Titanfall was a very big deal that just failed to keep an active player base. Despite this it is still a great game that set a solid foundation for future installments.

9. NBA 2K14 - 86%
\n

Despite there having been two installments in the series since 2K's NBA franchise debuted on Xbox One, it's 14 that received the best scores. The graphics alone wowed everyone when it debuted on next-gen consoles. I mean, just look at the court!

\n

But on top of the insane graphics, 2K implemented a fun career mode that featured cutscenes and post-match interviews, making you feel more like a true pro-baller than ever before.

10. Dragon Age: Inquisition - 85%
\n

Rising from the ashes of a series that seemed doomed to be abandoned, Inquisition became the amazing RPG we always wanted from the Dragon Age series. With a huge, sprawling world that changes as you play, fantastically detailed graphics, and a great cast of characters, Inquisition became the benchmarks for RPG games on Xbox One.

\n

One really impressive aspect of this game is the way in which it continues to surprise you and fill you with awe. Despite being over a hundred hours long, Inquisition is constantly throwing new challenges your way and making you change your style of playing, as well as your views. It reinvigorated a series and now stands in an echelon occupied by few other games.

"There’s no hyperbole when I say that Dragon Age: Inquisition is the best RPG I’ve played in a long time. Hell, it’s the best game of any genre I’ve played in a long time."

11. Batman: Arkham Knight - 85%
\n

Despite being the most divisive Batman game from Rocksteady Studios, Arkham Knight is still a shining testament to world-building, characters, graphics and core gameplay mechanics. Whether you like the Batmobile and the story or not, Arkham Knight is far from a bad game.

\n

While the wound of this one may still be fresh for some, the fact is that in a few years we won't see Arkham Knight as the tainted experience we currently do. It will just fit nicely into the trilogy and be remembered as part of one of gaming's greatest achievements.

12. Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions - 82%
\n

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions blends together everything players loved about previous games in the series, and new elements that fit like a glove. Online co-op and leaderboards are definitely the best additions to the series that make this game much more tense and exciting than it ever was playing against the AI.

Fans of multidirectional shooters, i.e. Asteroids, Dead Nation, Super Stardust, should definitely check out Dimensions, the latest in a long-running series that helped define the genre.

13. Child of Light - 82%
\n

As one of the most beautiful, elegant and memorable RPGs in recent memory, it's no surprise Child of Light features on this list. It might not be a 100+ hour RPG like every other that comes out nowadays, but Child of Light is exactly what it needs to be. It's a 2D side-scrolling RPG with elements of MetroidVania. It's RPG-lite and very accessible, but nonetheless memorable and polished.

\n

The turn-based gameplay is incredibly well thought out. It plays simple enough for those not accustomed to the style, and is nuanced enough for those who do. The story is truly emotional and touching and the whole game looks like a Studio Ghibli movie, as was the inspiration. Put simply, there are few games like this out there and there needs to be more!

\n

14. Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones - 82%

15. Fifa 15 - 82%
\n

We begin our list with an EA Sports staple and the best football/soccer series ever to hit consoles. Coincidentally at number fifteen on the list, Fifa 15 is the second in the series to make it to current-gen consoles, and the little tweaks made the beautiful game even better.

\n

Improved player memories and emotions make for a more realistic football simulation, in which players' body language and facial expressions change as each match progresses. Additionally the fans, managers and bench players react for the first time. And commentary was refined yet again, continuing to improve the Fifa series. And yet, Fifa 15 is not the highest ranked football game on Xbox One. Regardless, here's what The Guardian had to say about the game:

\n

If this is your first Fifa game on the new gen consoles then you will be blown away by all the little details that together contribute to an overall experience not too dissimilar to watching football on live television.

It was little over 2 years ago when Microsoft walked out of its worst ever E3 press conference. Little more than a week later it reversed all of its Xbox One policies over DRM, online connectivity and game sharing. Fast forward 2 years and the ramifications of those initial blunders are still being felt by Microsoft. But the Xbox team, including its head Phil Spencer, deserves a ton of credit for the way it's turned the ship around.

\n

But alas we're not here to dwell on the turbulent life of the Xbox One, we're here to celebrate the awesome games on the console. We've compiled a list of the highest rated Xbox One games to date, as rated by Metacritic. It's worth noting, however, that remasters and games that were released on Xbox 360 first, will not be counted.

The games on this list show the diversity of not just the Xbox One's library but the games industry as a whole.

\n

One final note: games that have the same score are in descending order of user score on Metacritic. And with that out of the way, read on and find out what Xbox One games are the highest rated!

So that's the lot! Of course there are many more awesome PS4 games - we never even fell beneath 84%! And that's not counting the PS3 ports and remasters, which help make the PS4's library more and more impressive.

\n

The best thing about these 15 games is the impressive diversity on display. Last generation bore witness to the rise of digital games and the indie developer, and it's great to see that tradition is continuing and growing with the PS4. So we get games like Batman: Arkham Knight and The Witcher 3 on the same list as Shovel Knight and Rocket League. There's truly something for everyone on the PlayStation 4!

\n

What games were you surprised to see, or not to see? Personally I thought Infamous: Second Son would have had a place in the top 15, and maybe Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. And what games do you think will make the list in future? Uncharted 4 seems a no-brainer, but what else? Let us know in the comments!

1. The Witcher 3 - 92%
\n

This should come as no surprise, because The Witcher 3 is the most breath-taking and immersive RPG ever created. Fun, interesting, beautiful, absolutely huge, and with things to do at every single point of the map, The Witcher 3 is exactly what we'd always wanted from a fantasy RPG.

\n

You play as Geralt of Rivia on his last adventure, that of finding his loved ones and finally taking down the Wild Hunt. The premise is simple, but the characters make the main quest a delight to play through, and the plethora of side quests, all with an amazing diversity of characters and monsters, make this game hundreds of hours long, but interesting all the way.

\n

Simply put, The Witcher 3 is the biggest and best game on PS4.

\n
\n

Its shockingly cohesive world is as beautiful as it is demanding, and it's packed full of mature content that throws you from one emotional response to the next. Its storytelling is superb, its combat is grippingly refined, and its often unforgiving nature only lends itself to a brilliantly rewarding experience.

2. Bloodborne - 92%
\n

Rarely has a game felt like such a descent into madness. That itself is the story of Bloodborne. You play as the silent Hunter, who travels around the town of Yharnam battling the residents-turned-monsters. The premise is simple, but the game gets more bizarre as the story unfolds, and you may find yourself going mad along with it.

\n

Continuing the challenging template set forth by Demon Souls, From Software created a masterpiece with Bloodborne. Melding together everything that made the Souls games great, Bloodborne makes the action a little faster, adds a gun to parry with, and makes the monsters more than lumbering brutes.

\n
Bloodborne takes the best of Dark Souls and builds the unrelenting gaming challenge on a prefect foundation - it will test your abilities to the max. The first true must-have exclusive for PS4 is here.

3. Shovel Knight - 91%
\n

The ultimate love letter to old-school 2D platformers. Shovel Knight is the true evolution of classic games like Mega Man, CastleVania, or Ninja Gaiden. But it isn't a clone or a rip-off, it's its own entity - and a fantastic one at that.

\n

Not only does Shovel Knight play like the perfect amalgamation of the games mentioned but it looks amazing, has an instant-classic soundtrack, and the PS4 version even features the God of War, Kratos. Shovel Knight begs to be played by gamers, young and old.

\n
\n

Whether you were weaned on an NES like I was, or don't yet know what you missed in a time before you were born, Shovel Knight is an absolute must-play.

4. Dragon Age: Inquisition - 89%
\n

BioWare breathed new life into the Dragon Age series with Inquisition. As a series that had been waning and never quite reached the heights of rival RPGs, Dragon Age finally reached its potential with the 2014 installment.

\n

Dragon Age: Inquisiton is an incredibly dense fantasy RPG that took the open world genre to new heights with it's size, lore, characters, and world. Inquisition is easily one of the best RPGs on the PS4.

\n
\n

With a huge, breathtaking world, an epic story, and choices that leaves a significant mark on the world around you, Dragon Age: Inquisition embodies everything that makes the series so popular.

5. Batman: Arkham Knight - 87%
\n

Batman: Arkham Knight has been met with a lot of criticism since its release, and some of it well deserved. However, the criticism is resounding because expectations were so very high, and because we've already had 3 installments, the core gameplay that makes the series so fantastic is overlooked for Arkham Knight's flaws.

\n

My point is, at its core, Arkham Knight is an amazing game. No one can argue that is a bad game. They may not like it or think it was disappointing, but the game itself is very good. The characters, world, graphics, and gameplay are all phenomenal. The Batmobile controls well and the tank mode similarly is very tight, though it can definitely be argued that it's overused and unbefitting of a Batman game.

\n

Regardless, Arkham Knight is a great game and one of the best on the PS4. It may not have hit the game of the year highs that the previous two did, but it's still a testament to superhero games and world-building.

\n
\n

...any frustrations I have with Arkham Knight don’t take away from the fact that I was unable to stop playing for four days straight, frequently in awe.

6. Fifa 14 - 87%
\n

EA's classic football series debuted on the PS4 with the best entry to date. Fifa 14 brought the near-perfect gameplay that EA has mastered, tightened it even further, and enhanced the graphics. Compared to the series' debut on PS3, this was a real belter.

\n

We all know what Fifa is and who it's for, so it doesn't take much extrapolation to explain why the series gets better with each entry. However, it's '14 that stands as the best football game on PS4 to date.

\n
\n

FIFA 14 exudes polish from every pore. It’s a great all-rounder, able to entertain players of all abilities.

7. OlliOlli 2: Welcome to Olliwood - 86%
\n

OlliOlli 2 is a skateboarding platformer that is equally frustrating and rewarding. Like its predecessor, OlliOlli 2 doesn't play like any other skateboarding game you've played. It's very tricky, no pun intended.

\n

The second entry in the series takes the skateboarding from the mean streets to the "Olliwood" hills. You play a variety of cool locations, including some that look like they're right out of Guacamelee. The game is as difficult, if not more, than the original, and well worth picking up if you want something different or skateboard-related.

\n
\n

OlliOlli 2 may be incredibly difficult at times but it is also non stop fun. It takes everything that made the first game great and made it even better.

8. Rocket League - 85%
\n

Do you like fun? Then Rocket League is for you.

\n

That's all I really need to say, but I will break it down a bit for anyone who doesn't know about the game or is on the fence. Rocket League is essentially football/soccer with cars. You drive, jump, boost, block, powerslide, and even climb walls in order to score the next all-important goal.

\n

While the gameplay is where Rocket League excels, especially in online play, the customization of cars is also a ton of fun. You can choose from an array of chasses, patterns, colors, tires, jet streams, hats and flags. So the diversity of cars you see online makes it feel consistently fresh and exciting.

\n

But to be honest, talking about the game can do it no justice. It's truly something you need to play for yourself to really get. And right now it's free on PS Plus, so join the 4 million others already playing Rocket League.

\n
\n

Rocket League is a pure videogame defined by an excellent mixture of its mechanics. It's extremely fun, addictive, one of the best competitive experiences of this year on PS4.

9. Far Cry 4 - 85%
\n

Far Cry 4 continued the insanity of the previous installment but took it to the Himalayan mountains. The story may not have been as good as that of Far Cry 3 but the same open-world traversal, combat, and quirkiness remained true to the series.

\n

Paragliding over the hills of Kyrat, taking down outposts, finding masks and letters that shed light on the world, and shooting honey badgers with fire arrows is incredibly fun. And to be honest, if you don't like the sound of that then you wouldn't like Far Cry 4. Ubisoft created another great entry in the series and it's one of the best open-world games on PS4.

\n
\n

Far Cry 4 pounds out an open-world FPS maelstrom of ridiculousness. It’s always in your face and it’s never afraid to throw numerous and diverse dangers in your path, just to see if you can adapt and survive.

10. Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions - 85%
\n

The latest installment in the Geometry Wars series, Dimensions is the best on PS4 and arguably the best of the series. The gameplay is tighter than ever, the color palette and soundtrack assault the senses, and online leaderboards make it addictive.

\n

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is a multi-directional shooter that is as fun and chaotic as it is hypnotic and challenging. Though this kind of game might not be for everyone, if you are a fan you will love what Dimensions has to offer.

\n
\n

It offers plenty of things for all players, as the Adventure mode draws in new fans, the Classic mode appeals to veterans, and the leaderboards manage to fuel their competitive natures.

11. Super Mega Baseball - 85%
\n

Here's a game you've probably never even heard of. I will say I'm still shocked that Super Mega Baseball is higher rated than any version of MLB The Show, although The Show '14 did rate at 83. That shows just how good this game is beneath it's cartoonish exterior.

\n

Not so much about the realism of baseball as it is the sheer fun, Super Mega Baseball offers a jump-in mentality for those who aren't lovers or familiar with baseball, and surprisingly deep complexity for those who do.

\n

Super Mega Baseball is one of the best baseball games out at the moment. Sure it may not be a licensed game like The Show, but the gameplay is as good as the official MLB game.

12. Battlefield 4 - 85%
\n

As a launch game, Battlefield 4 really showed what the PS4 and Xbox One were capable of. With the series' trademark online play that incorporates a fairly huge landscape, trucks, jeeps, jets, and "levolutions", Battlefield 4 set the bar for insane war games.

\n

I'm sure you've seen them by now, but the levolutions are pretty amazing, from falling buildings to dams bursting. They dynamically change the gameplay and give you something to show your friends! The campaign leaves you wanting and the plethora of bugs/online issues were unacceptable, but for a first next-gen outing, this was impressive.

\n
\n

As the first game to demonstrate the prowess of the Frostbite 3 engine, its explosive debut indicates a promising future for its technology. Gear up and strap in, Battlefield 4 sets the new standard for next-generation multiplayer.

13. NBA 2K14 - 85%
\n

As good as the core gameplay of the NBA 2K series is, the visual fidelity of the first PS4 version was what made it a must play - for everyone. Even if you aren't a fan of basketball, you should check the game out for the graphics alone.

\n

Another really cool feature of the game, more frequently seen in the WWE series, is MyCareer Mode, which sees you create a player and play a story mode. The mode came equipped with cutscenes and even post-match interviews with real-life personalities. Needless to say, fans had never felt closer to being a real pro-baller.

\n
\n

...beyond impressive graphics NBA 2K14 keeps touching perfection in terms of gameplay, still as precise as ever, with a game experience still more satisfying due to the very well done AI. You still don't know what game to buy for your PS4 or your Xbox One? Think again.

14. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor - 84%
\n

The game that surprised everyone in 2014, Shadow of Mordor deserves a place on any great next-gen games list. With a feature that truly screams "next-gen", Shadow of Mordor made a fairly bland story and world, extremely fun to play.

\n

You play as Talion, a Ranger of Gondor, who is murdered alongside his family by Sauron and his minions. The basic plot sees you kill every Orc ten times over in your road to revenge. It's really as simple as that, but the gameplay, skill-tree, and much-touted Nemesis System, are the reasons you keep playing Shadow of Mordor for a long time.

\n

It turns out that Shadow of Mordor is that rarest of things in video game culture - an unexpected knockout punch.

15. Axiom Verge - 84%
\n

Starting off the list is Axiom Verge, the latest in a long line of MetroidVania games, but Axiom Verge is arguably one of the most faithful to its inspirations.

We're coming up on the 2 year release of the PS4 (it seems longer than that, doesn't it?). And we thought it high time we celebrate the console and its games. The PlayStation 4 has a ton of games already, many of which are excellent - some even masterpieces, and we wanted to list the very best of the best. These highest rated PS4 games to date, as per Metacritic.

\n

HD remasters and ports will not be counted. That means The Last of Us Remastered, God of War III, Guacameleee: Super Turbo Championship Edition, Fez, etc. will not make the list.

\n

The reason behind this is simple, new games are more exciting. If we were to include those games, this list almost be entirely comprised of previously released games. That doesn't reflect the great games only on the PS4.

\n

Additionally, when two or more games have the same critical score, which several of them do, we will rank them depending on the higher user score.

\n

So without further ado, let's just dive in and bear witness to the 15 best games on the PlayStation 4 thus far!

PlayStation Now All-You-Can-Eat Coming January 13 https://www.gameskinny.com/8wn17/playstation-now-all-you-can-eat-coming-january-13 https://www.gameskinny.com/8wn17/playstation-now-all-you-can-eat-coming-january-13 Tue, 06 Jan 2015 06:18:57 -0500 mchiu

While Sony's PlayStation Now game streaming service is a good attempt at bringing PS3 games available to the PS4 and other Sony devices, the pricing model has not been the greatest, with individual games being rented at $5 for four hours of game time, or as much as $30 for a 90-day subscription to a single title.

Sony has listened well to the complaints, and starting January 13, PlayStation Now will start to offer an all-you-can-eat service, a la Netflix, for $20/month in the North American market. No details have been made for a launch in Europe or Japan as of yet. Initially, this new pricing model will be available only on the PS4, with added support for other devices such as the PS Vita, Xperia phones, PS TV, and SmartTVs.

There will be over 100 titles available on this new pricing model. In the video games such as Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Spelunky, NBA2K14, The Last of Us, and God of War Ascension were featured.

The subscription business model for AYCE gaming has come a long way. I remember back in 2005, I had subscribed to an AYCE online game service called GameTap which offered old-school games for download in a similar way. In fact, it's UX design and several other features of the service seemed to have been borrowed by the Xbox 360, in the sense that it also offered videos of upcoming games, but also animated shorts and other original contents. While the PS Now also offers "old-school" games, it's certainly games that are still popular and relevant, and I would be interested in seeing if Sony would start offering current games and new releases at a higher price point for its subscription service.

In the end, this is great to see,  and makes me wonder what is next. Since Sony Electronics produces Bravia SmartTVs and Sony Mobile produces the Xperia line of phones, it makes me wonder if the PlayStation Now service will eventually turns these kinds of products into next-gen consoles and handhelds? Having so many set-top boxes connected to my TV is starting to feel so 1990s now...

(Tip) NBA 2K Pick and Roll Guide for Unfamiliar Ballers https://www.gameskinny.com/n0axx/tip-nba-2k-pick-and-roll-guide-for-unfamiliar-ballers https://www.gameskinny.com/n0axx/tip-nba-2k-pick-and-roll-guide-for-unfamiliar-ballers Thu, 23 Oct 2014 21:35:11 -0400 Chris_Lemus

Every new sports video game brings fresh features, deeper play calling, and more abilities to alter the scheme. While these updated controls allow for greater flexibility, going back to the basics can bring fourth a game winning strategy.

Fundamental basketball is not only what the San Antonio Spurs used to defeat the Miami Heat in last year’s finals, but it is a strategy effective enough for NBA general managers to vote them as favorites to win this year’s NBA championship. Spurs head coach Greg Popovich’s unselfish playbook is under appreciated when compared to star studded teams like the Heat, but despite his mundane style, the three-time NBA Coach of the Year lead his players to all five of the organization’s NBA titles. Four of those titles came during an 11-year span.

Popovich encourages his players to pass with the aid of screen rolls, commonly known as the pick and roll. This play involves an offensive player using a stationary position (screen) to block a defender from moving. Screens can be set for players who do not have the ball, but this guide shows how to create multiple opportunities from one screen set for the ball carrier.

The NBA 2K controller layout features one button that calls this play, typically selecting a forward or center to set the screen. No matter which low post player is selected, pressing one button can still work as an advantage.

The Basics of the Pick and Roll:

The most inciting reason for setting the screen is to create a big shot or strong drive to the basket for the ball carrier. The best scenario, though, is for the pick and roll to create three different scoring opportunities. While this play can free the ball carrier, the screen setter also becomes an option if he runs towards the basket (roll). If both players are defended, the third option is to pass the ball to an open teammate near the top of the three-point line (the wing area) for either an open shot or new play.

To help create the most opportunities, a screen should be called on the left or right third of the court. Selecting the play at the top of the court does not create enough space to open up moves to the basket or passes to the wing.

Example one: Driving with the pick and roll

This first example includes the execution of both a drive by the play caller and roll by the screen setter.

Here, Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams positioned himself on the right side and called for a pick, set by power forward Kevin Garnett.

Williams decided to drive to the basket, and Garnett chose to roll towards the inside. While New York Knicks guard Richard Fulton could not react in time, center Tyson Chandler will come over to help the defense. Considering Chandler’s size and ability to defend a shot, the best scenario Williams could hope for is a person foul by the 7-foot-1 center. Thus, the option for Garnett to receive the pass becomes a priority, which could still work, but Chandler is in a position to defend both players.

The best option in this situation is to pass. In order for Chandler to help against the screen, he had to leave the player he was already defending. With Nets center Brook Lopez without a defender, he has the open opportunity to make a high percentage shot.

Example two: Passing to the wing from the pick and roll

The second example includes another passing opportunity presented in a different situation. Heat shooting guard Dwyane Wade called for a pick, and power forward Udonis Haslem came to establish the play.

Even though the ball carrier moved to one side of the court, the Spurs made the appropriate adjustments to defend both Wade and Haslem. Two big men, power forward Tiago Splitter and center Tim Duncan, move cover Haslem while point guard Tony Parker stopped Wade from driving. Just like Chandler in the previous example, Parker had to leave his assigned player to cover a new opponent. In this case, point guard Mario Chalmers is wide open on the wing to shoot a three-pointer.

There is also a second pass option. Spurs small forward Kawhi Leonard is cheating away from Heat small forward Lebron James to help defend center Chris Bosh and the painted area. Wade could make a direct pass to James, but the distance would be enough for Leonard to cover James. In order for James to receive an open look, a second pass should be made after Chalmers receives the ball to draw Leonard further away from the Heat’s small forward while Parker continues to defend wade.

Example three: Resetting the pick and roll

Finally, the pick and roll situation could also be used to help the move the ball for another play. In this possession, Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul is on the left side of the court where power forward Blake Griffin will set the screen.

Both Paul and Griffin accomplished their tasks of driving and rolling, but the Houston Rockets were still able to place defenders to guard against the first two options of the pick and roll. Although a third Clipper is looking to move behind Paul to get open, a Rockets defender is already approaching to the wing area. An unsuccessful pick and roll does not necessarily mean a failed possession, especially with 17 seconds left on the play clock. The best situation is to pass the ball back out and call another play, which may ultimately lead to a scare.

Using multistep plays from the playbook with various motions across the court can be effective, but one button opens up a variety of situations that can tailor to every style of player. The pick and roll can create a monstrous dunk or highlight reel three-pointer. While the opportunities are big, the idea of using the basic screen is a fundamental concept that should not be overlooked.

April 2014 NPD Numbers are Live https://www.gameskinny.com/01us3/april-2014-npd-numbers-are-live https://www.gameskinny.com/01us3/april-2014-npd-numbers-are-live Fri, 16 May 2014 05:54:00 -0400 Rocky Linderman

The NPD has released sales numbers for the month of April.

Every month the NPD, a group that independently tracks sales across a number of different industries including video game software and hardware sales, posts a list of the industry's best sellers. Here's a look at the games and hardware that dominated April.

Hardware Sales

Microsoft confirmed 115,000 Xbox Ones and 71,000 Xbox 360s were sold during the month of April - the PS4 retains its lead. However, Sony has not confirmed the number of consoles sold at the time of this writing.

When combining sales for hardware, software, and accessories, $580.3 million were spent by gamers during the month of April. That's up 17 percent from last year during the same period. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One boosted hardware sales by seventy-six percent when compared to the previous year. That's a staggering increase from $109.5 million to $192.8 million for this month alone. Clearly the video game industry is thriving thanks in large part to the release of Sony and Microsoft's new consoles.

With the announcement of the new Kinectless Xbox One, it'll be interesting to see how Microsoft's console fairs during the next month. Will consumers not buy Xbox Ones at all in anticipation of the price cut on June 9? Or will sales continue to chug right along?

Software Sales

The NPD only tracks sales numbers for physical copies of games sold, so this list does not cover games sold digitally. It is also worth noting that the NPD list places the console that the game sold the highest number on first. For example, Titanfall sold best on Xbox 360 so it's listed first in parenthesis. That being said, here's the list of the top 10 selling titles for the month of April:

1. Titanfall (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC)

2. Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Wii U, PC)

3. NBA 2k14 (Xbox 360, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, PC)

4. Minecraft (Xbox 360)

5. Lego: The Hobbit (Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, 3DS, Wii U, Vita)

6. The Lego Movie Videogame (Xbox 360, 3DS, PS3, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, Vita)

7. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (Xbox 360, PS3, DS, 3DS, PS4, Wii U, Xbox One, Vita, PC)

8. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (PS4, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, 3DS)

9. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)

10. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, PC)

Wow, Minecraft? Still? Seriously?

Flower - PS4

\n

I have shown quite a few people Flower over the past few months, and their first reaction is always something along the lines of "what the hell?" Despite first impressions, Flower is currently the highest-rated game of the generation, sitting one point ahead of Rayman: Legends on Metacritic. This game was available for the PS3 and made its way over to the PS4.

\n
Is It "Next-Gen"? - NO
\n

Flower looks nice, there is no doubt about that. The only problem is, it looks last-gen nice. It has stunning visuals on the PlayStation 3; however, when you compare the PlayStation 3 version with the PlayStation 4 version, they do not look that different. There is a noticeable texture improvement, but you need to see the two side-by-side to see it.

For many people, this game was a new name when it released to the PS4 and PC; however, the game has actually been out on the Ouya for a while. This indie game was multiplayer gold and has made its way over to the new generation.

\n
Is It "Next-Gen"? - NO
\n

TowerFall: Ascension has been a huge success due to its gameplay, particularly its multiplayer. Graphics and hardware strain are in now way a factor to this game's success at all. This game is a wonderful game, but could probably run on the NES (or at least the SNES) so it is, without a doubt, not next-gen.

FIFA 14 - PS4, Xbox One

\n

FIFA is a name that everybody is familiar. If there is any series that has never been butchered by EA, it is FIFA. Year after year these games are generally considered the best, and most successful, sports game. FIFA 14 was yet another success, once again EA has done a great job, but what happened to this generation?

\n
Is It "Next-Gen"? - NO
\n

This one is very obvious, despite how great of a game it is. EA has publicly stated that they did not foresee that massive success of the new consoles, and that the success came too late in development for FIFA 14. Basically, they had not funded the game enough because they did not expect so many people to want the new consoles. Well, I guess EA never was too in-touch with the customers.

Titanfall - Xbox One

\n

Titanfall is the game that many gamers have been waiting for. When the developers left Infinity Ward, the next installments in the Call of Duty series just could not hold the torch. Well, the famous developers are finally back as Respawn and have released Titanfall

\n

There was a lot of hype for this game and it did not succeed on the level that people had originally hoped - it was not the next Modern Warfare - but it was certainly a great game.

\n
Is It "Next-Gen"? - YES
\n

I do not think there is any denial here. The game looks, feels, and plays like it was designed for the new consoles. Some people may not have gotten as much as they hoped for, but not many people can say that they dislike this game.

Battlefield 4 - PS4, Xbox One

\n

Ah, Battlefield 4, the series has definitely seen better days. I remember pouring countless hours into Bad Company 2 a few years back, and it is still my favorite. Battlefield 3 was met with high praise and considered a wonderful game, but Battlefield 4 suffered a different fate.

\n

There are a lot of things people have complained about in Battlefield 4, it has been through rough times and a lot of buggy servers. They then tried to make up for it by giving every player battlepacks throughout February - of course the shortest month in the year is their Player Appreciation Month.

\n
Is It "Next-Gen"? - YES
\n

There are a lot of issues with Battlefield 4, but most of those issues have come from trying to make the game as worthy of the new consoles as possible. Between the powerful new Frostbite engine and the graphics it is pouring out, this is arguably the most demanding game on the shelves today. It is not on the same level as Crysis, but as far as visual appeal and realism goes, Battlefield 4 has made a strong debut. Hopefully the next game will fix the issues with this powerhouse.

NBA 2K14 - PS4, Xbox One

\n

I am a big fan of 2K's NBA series. I have always admired the fact that year after year, they do a great job of every single installment in the series, and 2K14 is no exception. When you take a look at a comparison between 2K14 on the PS3/Xbox 360 and on the PS4/Xbox One, you can't help but notice the difference. They have really made the players, coaches, and everything else look nice for the newest generation.

\n
Is it "Next-Gen"? - NO
\n

Even though the graphics have improved over the last generation version of the game, they still have some work to do before this game is considered truly next-gen. They are half way there and are doing things they could not on the last generation, but I have high hopes that 2K15 will bring it to a whole new level.

"},{"image":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/9b4dbe3bdce93a4346bc77a5a974bce2.jpg","thumb":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/tiny_9b4dbe3bdce93a4346bc77a5a974bce2.jpg","type":"slide","id":"42872","description":"

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition - PS4, Xbox One

\n

I have mentioned in the past that it is common opinion that the remaster of Tomb Raider was a complete improvement, but that most people would still not want to purchase it if they have already played the original. Most of the improvements are based on textures, particles, shaders, and view distance. Essentially, it's a graphics overload.

\n

If you had Tomb Raider on the PS3 or Xbox 360, then it is not worth it, for most people, to purchase and play the game again for better graphics. Regardless of this fact, the improvement looks very nice and is a beautiful game whether you've have played the original or not.

\n
Is it "Next-Gen"? - YES
\n

Even though everything other than the graphics is still a last-gen game, the graphics have improved enough to consider this game a next-gen game. The game does a great job taking advantage of the new hardware so that it does not feel like a cheap port to the new consoles.

Earning the Name "Next-Gen"

\n

The term "next-gen" has been thrown around a lot in the months since the new consoles' announcements, but when people refer to next-gen, they are not usually just referring to a game on the PS4 or Xbox One (or Wii U). When you say a game is next-gen, you want a game that looks and feels so much better on the new consoles that it justifies your new hardware.

\n

I will be taking a look at all of the next-gen games that have receive 85 or higher on Metacritic and examining their worthiness of the term 'next-gen.' The reviews can be deceiving, it might be a great game, but this list is focused on how far it pushes the new hardware. Mainly, graphics and amount of content.

\n

I will not be including Wii U games in this list, because the Wii U has been out for so long now that it has established a lengthy list of high rated games; also, the Wii U is not known for pushing graphics, but having excellent gameplay.

LEGO Marvel Superheroes - PS4, Xbox One

\n

It can definitely be hard to be a huge fan of the LEGO series. If you play all the games in the series then you start doing the same things over and over again; however, the design of these video games has always been great, and they keep on selling. LEGO Marvel Superheroes is one of the best installments in the series and is one that I highly recommend. Don't play all of the LEGO games, just play the best ones - like this one.

Rayman Legends - PS4, Xbox One

\n

It was trivial considering this a top game of the new generation. This game came out way back in August and was only ported to the new consoles in the last month; however, the quality of this game just cannot be ignored. It is like a Nintendo classic, its targeted for family, and is a great game regardless of who or what age you are.

Towerfall: Ascension - PS4

\n

Originally published on the Ouya - yeah, that console actually sold a few units - Towerfall: Ascension has returned to the PC and the PS4, and it is a fantastic game. One of the top-rated games of the generation so far, this game hits its peak when you get 3/4 players going. The multiplayer is local-only, so you will need a set of controllers and friends at your place, but it is worth it. The multiplayer is one of the greatest experiences in modern-gaming and is one of the few games out there that provides for a fun game with that many people on one console.

Forza Motorsport 5 - Xbox One

\n

Since the beginning, Microsoft has lured racing fans to its console with one of the most successful and well-designed racing games on the market. The newest installment is definitely not the best that they have released; in fact it might be worst, but the worst Forza Motorsport is still a great game - and better than most of the Need for Speed games coming out these days. If nothing else makes this game stand out from its predecessors, the visual upgrade from the console generation makes this game a must-try for racing fans.

NBA 2K14 - PS4, Xbox One

\n

A decade ago, gamers had their choice between EA or 2K for a variety of sports games, but in series such as NHL, EA was just laughing at 2K. These days, EA has a monopoly on most of the sports series, but 2K has kept control of NBA and done a great job of it. With just one great installment after the next, the series has continued its streak nicely into the newest generation.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition - PS4, Xbox One

\n

Many people have said that they do not think you should buy the definitive edition of Tomb Raider because it does not add enough to the original... but there is a whole crop of people who have not played this game yet and have a next-gen console. So, if you have not tried this game, then I recommend buying this edition, but if you played the original, then I would not recommend it just to play it again in "next-gen graphics."

Resogun - PS4

\n

It has been years since a successful game has released in this genre. I am thinking back to early last generation when Aegis Wing was packaged on the old Xbox Live Arcade Unplugged disc included with your new 360. The attention to detail present in Resogun, from the big bosses down to the most insignificant of grunt enemies, revived the genre and was included free for all PS Plus members from launch day. If you have PS Plus and have not tried it then I highly recommend it.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - PS4, Xbox One

\n

Ever since the breakthrough hit, Assassin's Creed II, the series has been one of Ubisoft's top titles. The series has been quite controversial, and Assassin's Creed III was not very well accepted compared to some of the past games; however, Ubisoft did not give up, and they struck back hard with Black Flag. Many will argue that this is the best game in the series so far, and they are justified to say so. The DLC might not have been as successful, but the new gameplay elements introduced by this game have left fans crying for more.

Titanfall - Xbox One

\n

After departing from Infinity Ward following Modern Warfare 2, the old developers finally returned with their instant hit, Titanfall. This mech-combat game has done a great job at creating believable ways to balance the battle between human and mech, and features inspired gameplay additions including the homing pistol. Xbox and PC players were awaiting this game expecting another Halo. They did not get a game that superb, but Respawn undeniably delivered a great game with lots of room for expansion in sequels.

Killer Is Dead was written by Suda; those who are a fan of his work would find this game very familiar in style. In the action-packed game, you're a cyborg that wields a sword. The title is priced at $30 until the end of the month.

Xbox One Hates 'F%ck' https://www.gameskinny.com/bti19/xbox-one-hates-fck https://www.gameskinny.com/bti19/xbox-one-hates-fck Thu, 05 Dec 2013 01:47:18 -0500 Stephanie Tang

The Xbox One's requirements for always-on and connected Kinect has been a bone of contention between gamers for ages, particularly once the specifics came out at E3. NSA scares, conspiracy theories, and general "my life is my own, keep out" sentiment has not won the Xbox One much favor in the great Microsoft versus Sony race.

Still, the technology is here, and it is what it is. No changing it now.

Gamers have already begun settling in with their newest preferred addition to the living room, and experimenting too - to the point where some gamers will never address their consoles by their proper names ever again.

But what about some of the intended uses for the Kinect voice commands? Better immersion into your game of choice? Easy game selection without clunky on-screen navigation? The latest in full-body dancing game technology?

How about the enforcement of propriety?

As seen in the video above, your Kinect is always listening... and evidently, doesn't always like what it hears. Cursing at the screen in NBA 2K14 netted this player a technical foul for bad language.

Cursing on NBA 2k14 gets me a technical foul. Dont curse at your kinect, itll ruin your life. Xbox One NBA 2k14, next gen gameplay. nba 2k14 rage quit.

That's right, according to the Xbox, you are not allowed to curse in the privacy of your own home.

What the f***?

Is this really the kind of next-generation gaming that we're interested in? Sure, real life is one thing, but one of the big reasons we play games is to let off steam - and say what we want, at least to the moving pictures on the screen. Getting penalized for it in-game is not exactly what we were looking for - and is hardly what I would describe as "immersive."

While this sort of thing has apparently been in place for a while, this Xbox generation is the first to see across-the-board always on microphone and Kinect setup - the settings are bound to be set as default.

Knowledge is power. If you're anything like me, and unable to resist letting slip seaman's slang while you're playing - now you know it's time to figure out how to turn that s*** off.

Sony Wants Your Greatness for Their Next Commercial https://www.gameskinny.com/a2m32/sony-wants-your-greatness-for-their-next-commercial https://www.gameskinny.com/a2m32/sony-wants-your-greatness-for-their-next-commercial Mon, 25 Nov 2013 16:21:12 -0500 Ryan Kerns

Sony has issued 64 unique challenges to gamers and has asked them to upload their videos to Facebook. Called First to Greatness, the first person to complete a challenge and post it will be featured in an upcoming PlayStation 4 commercial.

Sony is also promising that once all the challenges are completed, it will "unlock a cool new experience". The challenges are not just limited Sony first part titles and include Killzone: Shadow Fall, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag,NBA 2K14, and Knack.

As of the time I'm writing this article, 36 of the 64 challenges have already been completed... so if you want to be a part of "PlayStation History" (and a social media marketing scheme); you better get on it!

If this weekend has taught us anything, having a share button on your PS4 controller can lead to some pretty bad things. So whether or not Sony is going to achieve true greatness in this bold new generation remains to be seen at the moment. If you are interested in participating, visit FirstToGreatness.

How to Set Up Twitch on Your PS4 https://www.gameskinny.com/5gnpy/how-to-set-up-twitch-on-your-ps4 https://www.gameskinny.com/5gnpy/how-to-set-up-twitch-on-your-ps4 Mon, 18 Nov 2013 02:42:04 -0500 Amanda Wallace

As Gameskinny Editor Amy White wrote in her article earlier this week, it's super easy to broadcast to Twitch on your PS4. It's a four step process, in fact.

But how easy is it to connect your Twitch account to your PS4? Incredibly easy, it turns out.

  1. Press Share Button
  2. Press Options Button
  3. Click on Share Settings
  4. Click on Broadcast Settings
  5. Click "Manage Account Information"
  6. Save Twitch Info

Once you've done that, you are just moments away from broadcasting. You simply press Share, click Broadcasting, and then click Twitch and you can start broadcasting immediately.

Unless you disable it, you can see the amount of people watching you, the comments they're giving on your play, and even tweet or Facebook your followers to let them know that there is a live stream going on.

If you want to see your footage later, you'll need to set Twitch up to archive it. Want to see that killer play in NBA 2K14? Hoping to show your friend how to get past that one spot in Killzone: Shadow Fall? On your PC or browser, simply follow these steps:

  1. Log in to Twitch
  2. Go to My Settings
  3. Click "Videos:
  4. Under Videos, check the box for "Archive Broadcasts."

Keep in mind, these archives are no longer saved forever, so eventually they will go away. But if you're looking for a quick recap of earlier play, it's an easy system to get involved with.

Having problems setting up Twitch on your PS4? I'll try to answer your questions in the comments below.

Oh, and you can find me on Twitch here.

NBA 2K14 Releasing November 19th for Xbox One https://www.gameskinny.com/l1kek/nba-2k14-releasing-november-19th-for-xbox-one https://www.gameskinny.com/l1kek/nba-2k14-releasing-november-19th-for-xbox-one Fri, 15 Nov 2013 23:54:26 -0500 Courtney Gamache

Since the arrival of NBA 2K14 is soon approaching on November 19th for the Xbox One, we can expect some great details to surface. This reigns true for the newly found trailer, that has given away key features of NBA 2K14 to the public.

About NBA 2K14

The game, NBA 2K14 is naturally a game all about basketball. With this simulator, it'll bring the game to life on any HD TV. Although it hasn't launched for the Xbox One yet, it's available for the PS4 as of this week, and still available on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. No need to worry if you're not part of the next-gen consoles, you can still find it for the earlier ones.

This 'Uber Trailer'

The 'uber trailer' is all about details involving NBA 2K14, and how it's been revived. 2K Sports released the trailer to bring in some hype for the game, and to give you a taste of what to expect. With a video under five minutes long, you'll get a great concept as to how the game will work, and how the Eco-Motion system will make this game as realistic as possible.

This month has given great announcements for next-gen consoles, and we can expect some great things to surface over the next few months.

What do you think about NBA 2K14? Did the trailer give you some insight? Comment below!

Target Offer - Buy 2 Get 1 PS4 Games at Launch https://www.gameskinny.com/v6bju/target-offer-buy-2-get-1-ps4-games-at-launch https://www.gameskinny.com/v6bju/target-offer-buy-2-get-1-ps4-games-at-launch Wed, 30 Oct 2013 19:56:29 -0400 Courtney Gamache

According to a leaked Target flyer, the retail giant will be promoting  "buy two get one free" on PS4 games when the PS4 launches. If you're one of the many gamers who can't wait for the PS4, you might want to take advantage of this deal, and save a bit of money.

Flyer details

The promotion to "buy two get one free" is only available in-stores at Target, and you will only be able to buy one of each titled game. The three titles must be all different, and the lowest priced game will be free.

Although the advertisement only shows Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, NBA 2K14, Madden NFL 25, FIFA 14, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and Battlefield 4, it also states other games available in-store will be included. There is no evidence if other retailers such as Wal-Mart or GameStop will match this offer, and they better work fast to start competing.

This offer is only available from November 10th - 16th.

LeBron James Gets His Own Soundtrack in 2K14 https://www.gameskinny.com/3bvh3/lebron-james-gets-his-own-soundtrack-in-2k14 https://www.gameskinny.com/3bvh3/lebron-james-gets-his-own-soundtrack-in-2k14 Fri, 26 Jul 2013 21:31:04 -0400 Raymond W

When LeBron James was selected as the cover athlete of NBA 2K14, 2K Sports stated that he would be "actively involved" in the development of the game.

"It's not our style to slap someone on the cover and call it a day," 2K's Jason Argent said. "We always make use of their expertise to make a better game."

The decision has so far resulted in the game's soundtrack, ranging across hip-hop, rap, and pop genres and chosen by James himself, which was just released.

"2K is letting me take control of some important elements in NBA 2K14, including this year's soundtrack," James said.

James, the first NBA 2K cover athlete to choose his own soundtrack, succeeds 2K13's executive producer Jay-Z in deciding the songs to go into the game. Incidentally, one of Jay-Z's tracks has made it onto the list, in addition to worldwide Multi-Platinum hits "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk, "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke, and "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

The full track list includes:

  • Big Krit - "Cool 2 be Southern"
  • Cris Cab - "Paradise (On Earth)"
  • Coldplay - "Lost!"
  • Daft Punk (feat. Pharrell Williams) - "Get Lucky"
  • Drake - "Started from the Bottom"
  • Eminem - "Not Afraid"
  • Fly Union - "Long Run"
  • Gorillaz - "Clint Eastwood"
  • Imagine Dragons - "Radioactive"
  • Jada Kiss (feat. Ayanna Irish) - "Can't Stop Me"
  • Jay Z - "The Ruler's Back"
  • John Legend (feat. Rick Ross) - "Who Do We Think We Are"
  • Kanye West - "All of the Lights"
  • Kendrick Lamar - "Now or Never"
  • Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (feat. Ray Dalton) - "Can't Hold Us"
  • Nas (feat. Puff Daddy) - "Hate Me Now"
  • Phil Collins - "In The Air Tonight"
  • Robin Thicke (feat. Pharrell) - "Blurred Lines"
  • The Black Keys - "Elevator"
  • The Black Keys - "Howlin For You"

The soundtrack can be found on Spotify, so you can prepare in advance for 2K14's release on October 1 on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, or its launch day release for the PS4 and Xbox One.
