Courses in New Pokemon Snap are unlocked and leveled up by the Professor Mirror gives to your photos. You're able to get points for each Pokemon in four different ways. Each is given a star grade that matches up with different interactions you can force using the various tools you have available. The most complex and hardest to discover are the New Pokemon Snap 4-Star photo interactions.

These New Pokemon Snap 4-Star photo interactions sometimes take several steps to unlock and are often found later in the game as you progress. For this New Pokemon Snap guide, we will discuss how to unlock these 4-Star interactions with every Pokemon.

We have guides on how to get these interactions on further islands. Check out how to get all 4-Star interactions on Maricopia and Voluca, and how to get all 4-Star interactions on Durice and Aurus.

How to Unlock Every Pokemon's 4-Star Interactions

Capturing the Perfect Photo

First of all, to maximize your points, you'll need to know what New Pokemon Snap is looking for in each photo. This is broken down into six categories:

  1. Pose
  2. Size
  3. Direction
  4. Placement
  5. Other Pokemon
  6. Background

Pose is in reference to whether or not a Pokmon is doing some sort of interaction or is moving in a unique way. A good Size score comes with keeping the Pokmon within the frame as close as possible.

Direction has to do with which way the Pokmon is facing, with it looking at you giving a higher score. Placement deals with whether the target is centered in the frame.

Other Pokemon obviously is a bonus if you have additional Pokemon pictured. And finally, the Background is determined by what's behind Pokemon in the shot.

Focusing on these categories will allow you to get better and better pictures. These pictures are graded on the following scale:

  • Bronze Stars: Less than 2,500 points
  • Silver Stars: 2,500-3,500 points
  • Gold Stars: 3,500-4,000 points
  • Diamond Stars: 4,000+ points

Once you've mastered the perfect photo, you can move on to getting the right interactions to happen to maximize the number of points you can earn.

New Pokemon Snap Illumina Orbs: How to Get Them https://www.gameskinny.com/cthsk/new-pokemon-snap-illumina-orbs-how-to-get-them https://www.gameskinny.com/cthsk/new-pokemon-snap-illumina-orbs-how-to-get-them Mon, 17 May 2021 11:21:50 -0400 StevenGreen

To make progress in New Pokemon Snap, you must meet certain criteria on each island to unlock other areas, times of day, and so on. One of those criteria you need to meet on each island is unlocking the New Pokemon Snap Illumina Orbs for that island.

Finding each of the New Pokemon Snap Illumnia Orbs is done simply by discovering an activated Crystabloom flower hiding somewhere on a course and photographing it for Professor Mirror. This will instantly gain you access to the throwable item, which in turn opens up new interactions, allowing for continued progress.

For this New Pokemon Snap guide, we will discuss where each Crystabloom flower is located and what you need to do to photograph it so you can unlock the associated Illumina Orb.

How to Unlock Each Island's Illumina Orbs

Florio Nature Park (Night)

Once you've unlocked the nighttime edition of the Nature Park course by getting to Level 2 on the daytime version, you'll want to head there to find the Crystabloom.

This is probably the easiest one to grab, as it's simply sitting there waiting for you at the end of the course in the flower field on the right-hand side, where you just snap a quick picture and move on. Illumina Orb complete!

Additionally, you can photograph the Crystabloom at the beginning of the Illumina Spot for Florio, but you'll gain access to this one sooner.

Belusylva Founja Jungle (Night)

We're once again looking for the night course for Belusylva's Founja Jungle, where it's almost as easy to get this Crystabloom as the first. Again, get to Level 2 on the Day course to unlock the Night version.

Once you've reached the final section of the course with the waterfall and pond on your left, you'll want to pay attention to the sleeping Quagsire sitting to the right side of the path.

Next to this Quagsire is the glowing Crystabloom for Belusylva. Grab a picture and move on! You can now use Illumina Orbs on each of the courses on Belusylva.

Maricopia  Lental Seafloor

This is where things get a little more interesting, as you must complete a few steps on other courses to get this one unlocked in the first place. You'll need to level up two courses to Level 2 in order to unlock this course — Blushing Beach (Day) and Maricopia Reef (Day).

Once you've done that, you'll start combing through the undersea depths where you'll find a hidden Crystabloom.

Before going down into the underwater cave where the Wailmer jettisons a Pyukumuku, you'll see a patch of seaweed to your right filled with Cradily and Lumineon.

There's a sleeping Lumineon in the back-middle of the seaweed. You'll need to hit it with a fluffruit so it moves, which will allow the glowing Crystabloom behind it to be photographed.

Voluca  Sweltering Sands (Night)

Returning to the original methods from the first two islands, simply make it to Level 2 on the Sweltering Sand (Day) map to unlock its nighttime edition.

From there you'll enter the Night course and continue down the intended path (don't take the course deviation to the left) and before you fall down into the area with the sleeping Onyx, look to the right along the cliffs.

You'll see the glowing Crystabloom as you begin to fall, so be ready for a quick shot or utilize your zoom once at the bottom to grab a shot and unlock Illumina Orbs for the Voluca region.

Durice  Shiver Snowfields (Night)

After unlocking the nighttime course by getting to Level 2 in the Shiver Snowfield (Day) course, you'll get about halfway through the course before finding this Crystabloom trying to hide.

After you climb up the steep snow hill, you'll enter the second section of the course and see a large crevice in front of you.

As you make your way around it, look down into it to see the glowing Crystabloom down below. Snapshot—Illumina Orb unlocked!

Aurus  Ruins of Remembrance

Once you've attained Level 2 in the Outaway Cave course, you'll unlock the ruins, where this Crystabloom is the easiest of them all to find.

At the beginning section, after the Edlegoss float by and you see the Houndoom running around, you'll want to pay attention to the right side of the course. Up on the cliff wall, you'll have your flower waiting to be photographed.

After you grab that picture, you will have unlocked all of the Illumina Orbs for New Pokémon Snap and can continue to work on finding all the interactions and alternate routes on your way to filling out your PhotoDex.

And that's how to get all of the New Pokemon Snap Illumina Orbs. For more on New Pokemon Snap, consider heading over to our guide hub for the game

New Pokemon Snap Jungle Waterfall Route: How to Unlock It https://www.gameskinny.com/sjeac/new-pokemon-snap-jungle-waterfall-route-how-to-unlock-it https://www.gameskinny.com/sjeac/new-pokemon-snap-jungle-waterfall-route-how-to-unlock-it Fri, 07 May 2021 11:51:11 -0400 Josh Broadwell

New Pokemon Snap features dozens of hidden Pokemon interactions and separate routes to take, including the Founja Jungle waterfall route. Professor Mirror points the jungle waterfall out to you once you hit research Level 2 for Founja Jungle at night, but the way to get behind the waterfall is about as clear as the jungle’s muddy swamp.

Our New Pokemon Snap behind the waterfall guide walks you through each step, though note: there are spoilers for what's behind the waterfall.

New Pokemon Snap Jungle Waterfall Route

As mentioned, you’ll first need to raise your Founja Jungle night research level to 2. Otherwise, the necessary Pokemon interactions won’t trigger, and Professor Mirror won’t even point out the possible extra route.

If you thought the slumbering Liepard on the rock looked suspiciously smug, you were right. It’s the key to getting the New Pokemon Snap waterfall route.

As soon as you see Liepard jump onto the rock, play music (using the “R” button). This wakes up a bunch of Pikipek nearby.

The disturbance means Liepard won’t go to sleep. Instead, it leaves the rock, and you’re free to choose the alternate route. Just make sure you’re ready with the scanner since, as with the other alt routes, the window for choosing it is pretty short.

Minor spoilers below.

Once you’re behind the waterfall, you’ll see Wooper, Morelull, and some sleeping Swampert. There’s not much you can do with these Swampert. They don’t react to music, and they wake up for just a brief time if you throw a Fluff Fruit at them.

Sleeping and alert reactions still make for decent photos, though your best chance for getting a fabulous Swampert photo is taking the swamp route.

That’s all you need to know about how to get behind New Pokemon Snap’s waterfall, but stay tuned for more New Pokemon Snap guides in the coming days.

Two decades after Pokemon Snap reimagined what Pokemon could be, Nintendo has released New Pokemon Snap on Nintendo Switch. It’s a Dragonite-sized leap forward, yet a familiar experience less focused on pushing the spinoff series forward than it is in perfecting what came before.

That familiar limitation and some mid-game grinding hold New Pokemon Snap back a bit, but it’s a charming and captivating game full of joy nonetheless.

New Pokemon Snap Review: Captured My Heart

As ever in a Pokemon game, the New Pokemon Snap story isn’t deep, but it is interesting. You show up in the Lental region to help Professor Mirror with his environmental research. Todd from the first game shows up, alongside Mirror’s assistant and some kid who thinks he’s your rival, but they don’t really matter much to the overall scheme of things.

The intriguing bit about New Snap is you’re unraveling the Illumina mystery by following the century-old footsteps of the region’s biggest environmental researchers and adding to the island’s history in the process.

It mostly amounts to taking pictures of glowing Pokemon and traveling new places, admittedly. However, it’s a nice bit of extra context to create a link between you, the environment, and the Pokemon you (photo)capture along the way.

Finally — finally! — New Pokemon Snap lets us step into the Pokemon world to do more than make them fight and be the best there ever was. For a series emphasizing choice and many paths in life, it’s odd 25 years of Pokemon offered so little outside of battling, one reason why New Pokemon Snap is so refreshing to play.

There’s a definite grind (more on that in a bit), but hopping in the NEO-ONE cab and slowly going through Snap’s environments is an experience with rewards like no other.

In the fairly short story mode, your goal is racking up points in each location to raise research levels, unlock new areas, and as mentioned, figure out what causes the Illumina phenomenon. Each photo you take earns a set number of points based on several criteria, and a location’s research level goes up once you hit a certain points threshold.

That’s where the grind sets in. Raising an area’s level the first time unlocks night expeditions, but after the first level, you’ll need to replay an area in day and night modes several times to rank up again. And again. And then again. Despite spending nearly a week with New Pokemon Snap, I’m still not sure how I feel about that.

On the one hand, it’s like Snap is forcing you to rinse every level for each possible photo opportunity. On the other, there’s barely a moment when Snap doesn't throw in something utterly charming, and I admit that had I not been around other people, a fair few noises of surprise and delight would have escaped my lips while playing.

As you can guess just from looking at the game, New Pokemon Snap is basically “let’s go on a Pokemon photo safari.” You’ll observe Pokemon in their natural habitats (without having to attack them), and there’s almost always something new to see. Pokemon behavior and interactions change as your rank goes up, and even before that, it’s almost impossible to see everything in just a few runs of an area.

I’m not the first to say it, but removing the need to rank and battle Pokemon means you can appreciate them for their own merits. As just one example, I strongly dislike Bidoof in the mainline games but have roughly 30 Bidoof images saved in my Snap gallery. Dump truck Bidoof, sassy Bidoof, sleepy Bidoof, building a house Bidoof, hey-how’s-it-going-I’m-Bidoof — the variety of poses and possibilities is nearly endless.

There’s a surprising amount of nuance for an on-rails game with such short levels too. Throwing fruit at the right point, firing a scan, or using an Illumina orb often has unexpected effects on areas and Pokemon you thought you knew everything about already. There’s even a touch of National Geographic thrown in from time to time because yes, Pokemon do eat each other. It’s not graphic (thankfully), but it does happen.

All that and the sheer adorableness of seeing Pokemon frolic, smile, dance, eat, argue, and glow makes dealing with the point requirements less of a drag. You might think differently if the idea of seeing happy digital creatures actually be, well, happy doesn’t sound appealing, but then again, you likely wouldn’t be reading a Pokemon Snap review if you thought that.

There’s one thing that likely will wipe the smile from your face, though: Professor Mirror. New Pokemon Snap’s grading system is awkward, to say the least, and counterintuitive to most basic photography practices at worst.

The highest-ranked photos require a Pokemon to look at you, be centered perfectly in the frame, have a fantastic background, and ideally feature other Pokemon in the frame as well. Other shots still earn good points, but you’ll need the best ones to push your research level higher without as much grinding.

Granted, there has to be some standard of judgment in the game, else it would have no structure and a confusing means of progression. Mirror and his inflexible rubric matter less after you unlock free play mode, but until then, be prepared for plenty of mildly patronizing feedback on shots you think deserve more (he is a professor, after all).

Eventually, I just skipped his feedback and moved on. The dozens of requests available do a better job of pointing out unique photo opportunities anyway, from seeing Dodrio take flight at just the right time to spotting Toucanon and its Pikipek children sharing a moment.

The number of requests is a little overwhelming, but preparing for and nailing the ideal shot never gets old. The online leaderboards and voting system offer enough reward for your creative shots anyway, whatever the professor has to say about them. After you’ve saved photos to your personal album, you can add all manner of effects, stickers, and enhancements to spruce them up even more.

It’s something I haven’t actually done much of yet, though. The plain Pokemon models and environments just look gorgeous on their own, and even though I’d love to see the same level of detail in mainline games, I also know that’s probably not possible. These areas and Pokemon behavior are much more limited in scope than in mainline games, and I imagine that makes rendering them in such detail more feasible.

Much as I love New Pokemon Snap and will likely still be playing it several months from now, that limitation is hard to ignore. New Pokemon Snap is very much a spiritual successor to the original -- and possibly, hopefully, a test for future Snap spinoffs.

Though delightful, Pokemon behavior is still obviously scripted. You can’t quite see the strings, but there’s an additional layer of suspended belief required to fully enjoy the game, especially in the middle where the grind is at its worst. Make no mistake — it’s still a joy to play.

However, I can’t help but imagine what a New Pokemon Snap+ might be like, one free from the NEO cab, with open exploration, and an even greater variety of Pokemon behaviors to uncover.

That said, imagining what a free-form, open-world photography video game would be like is only possible because of what New Pokemon Snap and its predecessor accomplish. Whatever its limits, New Pokemon Snap is still an important and innovative game.

New Pokemon Snap Review: The Bottom Line

Pros

  • So many adorable Pokemon
  • Substantial variety in behavior
  • Extensive replayability
  • Pokemon looking its loveliest ever

Cons

  • A bit grindy
  • That grind makes the scripted bits stand out more
  • Professor Mirror

No amount of grind or patronizing feedback from Professor Mirror can dim just how charming New Pokemon Snap is. It's calm, colorful, and cozy, rewarding you for capturing free Pokemon just living their lives in the wild. Aside from being a much-needed alternative perspective on the Pokemon world, there's little else like it in video games right now.

New Pokemon Snap releases April 30 on Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo is giving fans a chance to explore the Lental region ahead of time — well, sort of.

The Explore Lental site is live now, offering a sneak peak at eight of New Pokemon Snap's regions with clickable locations where you can learn more about what to expect once the full game releases.

Each region has an exclusive digital photo frame you can apply to photos and share on social media, and you'll earn Platinum Points for exploring the site as well.

It's also worth noting the promotional image confirms more than just Gen II Pokemon for New Pokemon Snap. There's a Hippowdon lurking in the oasis there (Gen IV) and what looks like a Torchic (Gen III) approaching it.

New Pokemon Snap puts you back in the cab of the NEO-ONE at the behest of Professor Mirror. The goal is taking top-tier images of Pokemon all around the Lental region, and that means paying close attention to each environment. Some Pokemon react to food, some are only out at night, and most have different responses to New Pokemon Snap's Illumina Orbs.

Check out Illumina Orbs in action in the most recent New Pokemon Snap trailer.

The Pokemon Company teased some fresh new features in New Pokemon Snap as part of the Pokemon 25th anniversary celebrations, including glowing Pokemon and online leaderboards.

As with the original Pokemon Snap, the professor ranks photos based on quality and pose. Ace and budding Snap photographers alike can go online and post their favorite photos, and should these pics find favor with other players, they could be included in the game's featured photo roundup.

One way of increasing both a photo's points and the chance of shooting a popular pic is catching Pokemon doing unusual things. The latest New Pokemon Snap trailer showed the usual "throw fruit at Pokemon" option, but players can also attract Pokemon with music to encourage unique behavior.

Another option is using the new Illumina Orb item. Illumina Orbs have different effects depending on the Pokemon, but they all revolve around light. Swanna glows when it comes in contact with an Illumina Orb, while Cinderrace's fire gains an ethereal blue light.

Sometimes, though, it just comes down to luck and catching Pokemon doing rare and unusual things at the right time. New Pokemon Snap releases April 30 for Nintendo Switch.

New Pokemon Snap Release Date Announced With New Trailer https://www.gameskinny.com/zc465/new-pokemon-snap-release-date-announced-with-new-trailer https://www.gameskinny.com/zc465/new-pokemon-snap-release-date-announced-with-new-trailer Thu, 14 Jan 2021 11:16:35 -0500 Josh Broadwell

New Pokemon Snap, first shown off in June 2020, releases April 30 for Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite and will retail for $59.99. The Pokemon Company announced the New Pokemon Snap's release date in a new trailer showing some of the many and varied environments in store.

New Pokemon Snap takes place in the Lental region, specifically a diverse archipelago with ecosystems ranging from jungle to desert and everything in between.

Professor Mirror, the Lental region's Pokémon expert, wants to study Pokémon in their natural habitat, so he does the totally normal thing of sending small children out to do his field work in the handy, on-rails NEO-ONE car.

Questionable labor ethics aside, the goal is filling up the Photodex with top-notch Poke-pics. Professor Mirror grades images on aspects such as poses and frame placement, but there's plenty of incentive to hop back in the NEO and observe 'mon in their natural habitat.

New Pokemon Snap promises variety at every turn. Pokemon lurk in secret pathways, patrol their habitats, and get into scuffles with each other, and that's before even realizing the NEO ONE is around.

Players can toss delectable Fluffruits to attract Pokemon's attention, and Nintendo's press release mentioned Pokemon behavior changes with every visit and some brand-new behaviors as well.

That's the normal Pokemon photo experience, but the Lental archipelago offers something unique: the Illumina Phenomenon. This occurs in certain glowing places, and while the New Pokemon Snap trailer shows a giant Meganium emerge from one such location, the Illumina Phenomenon and what it does remains a mystery for now.

New Pokemon Snap pre-orders are open now.
