Hardspace: Shipbreaker Halloween: Haunted Frontier

\n

Hardspace: Shipbreaker's Halloween event is Haunted Frontier, full of spooky haunted ships that put your bravery — and desire for salvage — to the test.

\n

The update, which is live now on Steam, turns any ship into a potential ghost ship. Things start deteriorating as you gather materials and fend off rogue AI nodes. Lights flicker on and off. Air gets sucked out of the room. And somewhere deep in the ship, unsettling sounds can be heard...

\n

Should you make it out alive, you can show off your hard-earned rewards with new stickers and badges.

The freighters are full of new treats and a security system gone haywire.

\n

King Midas is back from the great beyond in Fortnite's Fortnitemares 2020 event from now until November 3, and he's giving you the chance to wreak havoc on friend and foe alike.

When you're eliminated in a Solo, Duos or Squads match, you get the chance to return as a Shadow in Nitemare Royal. Attack surviving players from the shadows and even possess vehicles to bring their game to an end.

That's the trick side of things, but the island has plenty of treats in store too. You can get your hands on the Pumpkin Rocket Launcher, Fiend Hunter Crossbow, a special Midas invention, and of course, candy.

\n

There's a suite of Fortnitemares challenges where you can unlock costumes and weapon skins such as the Smash-O'-Lantern Pickaxe and Midas' Shadow Wrap.

PUBG Mobile Infection Mode

\n

PUBG Mobile's Infection Mode is back from the dead from now until November 9, with new content, themes, costumes, and plenty of zombies.

\n

Infection Mode's classic combat returns, pitting a team of Defenders against a team of Zombies in an all-or-nothing fight. Zombies — sporting Halloween masks, if you so choose —  can only use melee attacks, but fallen Defenders transform into Zombies with chances for form shifts and stat buffs.

\n

If it all gets too much for the Defenders, they transform into Vanquishers when their team is down to three members. Foes they vanquish can't be resurrected.

\n

These hellish fights unfold across maps decked out with pumpkins, gravestones, and other seasonal paraphernalia. More costumes and decorations are planned before the end of the event.

Ghost-type Pokemon will be more common in the wild, in Raids, and in Eggs. You might even find a costumed Gengar in Raids or hatch a Sableye in costume if you're lucky.

If this is your first time taking part, you'll need to complete "The Witchmother's Bargain" quest from the Crown Store and earn the Witchmother's Whistle item. If you already have it, just select it from your collections to get started.

\n

Using the Whistle kicks off a two-hour period of bonus XP, but there's a lot more.

\n

Players can earn new mementos, furnishings, and Dremora and Hollowjack-themed items through Plunder Skulls earned in battle.

\n

Bosses drop Dremora Plunder Skulls with extra goods, including treasure maps and pages for the Grave Digger weapon style.

\n

There's the final evolution of the Indrik, a costume gala, grab bags, deals, and more. Check out the full details on the ESO event site.

Overcooked! 2  Moon Harvest Festival

\n

Overcooked! 2's Halloween celebration isn't technically Halloween-themed. It's in honor of harvest and autumn celebrations throughout eastern Asia, but it's fall-ish, so it works.

\n

Better yet, it's a free update with no end time, and the content will appear in Overcooked! All You Can Eat for next-gen consoles.

\n

Overcooked! 2's Moon Harvest Festival introduces new kitchens themed around water and lily pad obstacles. There are five new levels total, plus three succulent-looking mooncakes to add to the menu.

Borderlands 3 Halloween — Bloody Harvest Returns

\n

Borderlands 3's Bloody Harvest Halloween event is back for October 2020. The ghoulish festivities run through November 5, and it's easier than ever to get your hands on some sweet, ghastly gear.

\n

To kick things off, head to Sanctuary III, and speak with Maurice. Maurice tasks you with collecting Hecktoplasm from haunted enemies, easily spotted by their ghostly green glow.

\n

Defeating haunted enemies spawns specters you'll need to defeat as well, and that's when you finally get ahold of Hecktoplasm.

\n

After collecting enough of Hecktoplasm, Maurice opens the gate to Heck, where you can chat with Captain Haunt to access a number of quests, through which you'll earn Bloody Harvest items and cosmetics.

\n

This year, the Bloody Harvest quests are less demanding than before, making it easier to get loot.

\n
    \n
  • 4 challenges completed  “A Shrinking Feeling" weapon trinket
  • \n
  • 8 challenges completed  "Message from Beyond" ECHO Device skin
  • \n
  • 12 challenges completed  "Haunted Look" shared Vault Hunter skin
  • \n
  • 15 challenges completed  "Porphyrophobia" weapon skin

Destiny 2: Festival of the Lost 2020

\n

Destiny 2 brings back the Festival of the Lost and the Haunted Forest for 2020, with new weapons, triumphs, armor sets, and cosmetics for Exotics to celebrate the spookiest season of the year. Festival of the Lost 2020 is free for all Destiny 2 players and runs from October 6 through November 3.

\n
\n\n
\n

Festival of the Lost 2020 adds new perk rolls for the Braytech Werewolf and Horror Story, plus new sets for a few classes:

\n
    \n
  • Hunter — Lycanthrope Set
  • \n
  • Warlock — Daywalker (vampire) Set
  • \n
  • Titan — Promethean Set
  • \n
\n

On the official Festival of the Lost blog post, Bungie provided more information on the Halloween event. The Spider is a new NPC that gives players Cipher Decoders that unlock special chests at the end of The Haunted Forest. The chests are worth pursuing because they contain Legendary items specific to the Festival of the Lost.

\n

Rounding things out, there are new Sparrow skins available, as well as festival masks and vanity items for various armor sets, including broomsticks and witch hats.

Resident Evil Resistance October Update

\n

Resident Evil Resistance has a big October update in store, which is basically a Halloween update without actually being called a Halloween update.

\n

Jill Valentine joins the ranks of the Survivors, with powerful weapons and her characteristic dodge mechanic from Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake. And as is only fitting, Nemesis itself is a playable Mastermind for the first time. Players control Nemesis through playing as Nicholai, another new Mastermind.

\n

The Prison is a new map added in RE Resistance's October update, and the Uptown Raccoon City and Bemusement Park maps get a remix with new layouts.

\n

Finally is a slew of new costumes and weapon skins, Survivors' perks and customizable abilities, and Mastermind traps.

Grounded October Update

\n

Grounded’s October update adds ziplines and more to the survival game, including some Halloween-themed items. The initial announcement is relatively light on details, but players can expect decorations, recreational items, and doodads to use with friends. These include harvestable Candy Corn and a new landmark in the Frankenline, which is described as "a creepy discarded Etch-a-Sketch you can actually draw on."

\n

Aside from washing The Backyard in a spooky glow, the October update for Grounded does a lot on the backend as well, including fixing a handful of bugs, fine-tuning combat, and unlocking new perks. You can see the full patch notes here

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath  All Hallows' Eve

\n

Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath is getting some Halloween goodness with the All Hallows’ Eve character skin pack. It’s available now and is free for Aftermath owners. Those who haven’t upgraded to Aftermath yet would need to purchase the expansion, which also unlocks the Summer Heat and Femme Fatale packs from earlier in 2020.

\n

Mortal Kombat 11’s All Hallows’ Eve skin pack trailer highlighted three of the included skins. One is the “Blizzard King” outfit for Sub-Zero, and then there’s the part-werewolf part-school spirit “Beast Within” skin for Johnny Cage. Then there’ “Bad Medicine” for D’Vorah, turning the Kytinn fighter into a spidery nurse from hell.

\n

It’s not certain if Warner Bros. is adding anything else to Mortal Kombat 11’s Halloween event, but we’ll update if something new turns up.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp Halloween

\n

The Halloween fun isn’t limited to New Horizons, as Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp celebrates spooky season in its own way. The 2020 Pocket Camp Halloween event features a number of special activities with ghoulish treats on offer for those who complete certain goals.

\n

Jack comes around and demands sweet treats. Hand over bat-themed lollipops to get bat furniture as a reward, and plant pumpkins during the month’s Garden Event to nab hatbats. Jack offers exclusive items such as mystical pumpkins in return.

\n

Taking part in the October Fishing Tourney nets some goodies as well, with potion-themed furniture on offer every time players reach a size goal with the fish they catch.

\n

Then there’s a fright night gyroidite scavenger hunt, new Happy Home classes and challenges, wall and carpet sets, special cookie items and more. The Pocket Camp Halloween and October events are live now.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Halloween

\n

Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Halloween update is available to download for free now, and it’s bringing more than just the Czar of Halloween to the island.

\n

Animal Crossing patch 1.5 paves the way for Halloween by adding Candy as an item players can purchase from the Nooklings’ store and pumpkins as growable DIY fodder.

\n

The patch 1.5 trailer shows players planting, watering, and harvesting at least four different pumpkin varieties and then using them in various Halloween-themed DIY recipes.

\n

On Halloween night (October 31), Jack himself visits the island. It’s not clear yet what he requires of the player, but all the residents will be lurking about, asking for Candy and showing off their costumes.

\n

The patch adds new skin tone options for players to look their creepy best as well. We’ll update with more information about what New Horizons Halloween brings to the table as it becomes available.

Monster Hunter: World Iceborne — Fun Fright Fest

\n

Capcom’s brewing up a special Monster Hunter: World Iceborne Halloween event called the Fun Fright Fest, part of the hefty Title Update 5. It runs from October 15 at 8 p.m. EST through November 5 at the same time and is exclusive to the expansion.

\n

The Autumn Harvest Fest is returning to the base Monster Hunter: World game, but Capcom hasn’t said much about it yet.

\n

Fun Fright Fest (starting at 7:06 in the above trailer) sees the Seliana Gathering Hub decked out with spooky furnishings, and the handler dons a Cute Demoness outfit to celebrate the occasion. There are two special ticket types to collect during the event and trade in for loot: the Fun Fright Ticket and the VIP Fun Fright Ticket.

\n

The former get doled out as daily login bonuses for the MHW Halloween event and can be used to craft armor with Decoration slots. Players can exchange the latter for in-game decorations and Layered Armor, but these are only available as random item drops. Both ticket types can be exchanged for Melding Tickets too.

\n

There’s at least one new set of armor coming to the Fun Fright Fest, Demon Lord Alpha+. Wearing pieces of this armor set increases the chance of getting VIP Fun Fright Tickets.

\n

Capcom may reveal more about Monster Hunter: World Iceborne’s Fun Fright Fest as the start date approaches, and we’ll update if that happens.

Killing Floor 2: Infernal Insurrection

\n

It wouldn’t be Halloween without Killing Floor 2’s annual Halloween celebrations, and 2020 is no different. This year’s Halloween event is Killing Floor 2: Infernal Insurrection, and it brings treats galore, including new weapons, maps, and cosmetics.

\n

Infernal Insurrection’s new map is Hallmark Station, a twisted take on London’s famous King’s Cross Station. Hallmark Station has been overrun by zeds, of course, and players must team up with fellow mercenaries to take down the demonic threat. Hellmark Station includes Survival, Endless, and Weekly modes.

\n

Two new HRG weapons make their debut in Killing Floor 2’s Halloween event.

\n
    \n
  • HRG Scorcher (Firebug class bonus) — a flare gun that marks targets by setting them on fire
  • \n
  • HRG Arc Generator (Survivalist class bonus) — fires EMP blasts in short bursts or powerful charges
  • \n
\n

From now until November 10, Killing Floor 2 is also introducing a number of Halloween events, objectives, bonuses, and cosmetics.

Crypt of the Necrodancer review

\n

It’s been five years since Crypt Of The Necrodancer released, but it still makes for an excellent title, appearing on many (many) "best of" lists. And for good reason.

\n

Developed by Brace Yourself Games, Crypt is another example of successfully merging roguelike mechanics with a genre typically not known for them — this time a rhythm game where you traverse dungeons in step to the beat.

\n

It’s another challenging affair but proves impossible to put down, and like Bastion, there’s little risk when it’s 80% off.

Supergiant Games are hard at work with finishing Hades right now, but their first project, Bastion, is one of the most acclaimed 2D action indie games in recent memory.

Studio MDHR Entertainment Inc. brought us one of gaming’s most unique titles when Cuphead launched in 2017 — and it's focused on boss fights. PS Now Games for January Cooking Up Lost Legacies on the Horizon https://www.gameskinny.com/tf5n0/ps-now-games-for-january-cooking-up-lost-legacies-on-the-horizon https://www.gameskinny.com/tf5n0/ps-now-games-for-january-cooking-up-lost-legacies-on-the-horizon Wed, 18 Dec 2019 14:06:17 -0500 Josh Broadwell

PlayStation Now is set to get three new games to start the new year. These January 2020 PS Now games are some pretty big titles, too. Though they're a tad older, users are sure to be excited to finally get their hands on some of Sony's best games.

Here's what subscribers can expect on January 2.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon: Zero Dawn is a gorgeous, open-world game that's as compelling now as it was when it released two years ago. You'll follow the tale of Aloy, who is naturally a Chosen-One type (this is an RPG after all) and watch her emotional journey unfold across a bizarre landscape.

But the real joy here — and one reason we loved it so much — exploring Horizon's massive world, and it's partly because the game cuts down on the bloat of things like its crafting system.

Overcooked! 2

Sequels have to navigate that tricky balance between rehashing old material and being too new. Fortunately, Overcooked! 2 manages that tightrope walk pretty well. It's the same wild, zany action you (might) know and love from the first game, garnered with a generous dash of new obstacles, locations, and scenarios to work your way through.

Like all good recipes, Overcooked 2 is versatile as well, good for solo or co-op play with the young'uns.

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was something of a departure for the beloved Uncharted series. It shifts focus from usual protagonist Nathan Drake to other important characters from Uncharted 4, and in doing so, it offers a fresh take on the franchise.

That's good, since the rest of the game is basically pure Uncharted, for better and for worse. But hey, it's free with PS Now.

---

That's it for January's PS Now games. Stay tuned to GameSkinny for more PS Now news as it happens. And if you're wondering what the difference between PS Plus and PS Now is, we've got you covered

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

\n

Everyone’s favorite bandicoot is back! And what’s more, he’s on PC, at long last. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy features the dusky marsupial’s original three outings from the PS1, painstakingly remastered for modern gamers. It’s quite the treat for older gamers, but even if you never played the originals, it looks and sounds as good as its competitors.

\n

Fortunately, it plays even better than the original PlayStation games. Controls are more responsive, environments are brighter (i.e., easier to stay alive in) and most importantly, the first Crash Bandicoot lets you save between any level. Just in case you forget, though, each game has an autosave feature as well. The challenge hasn’t changed at all. Without a doubt, the first game in the trilogy presents the greatest challenge and will truly test your platforming abilities.

\n

The other two are more forgiving, and while they’re still no cakewalk, they vary the gameplay in numerous ways, with extra relic challenges, a much more diverse set of levels, motorcycle races, chases on top of China’s Great Wall, fleeing from a hungry polar bear.. it’s a wild ride. Coco finally gets the spotlight too, since you can choose her over Crash from the very beginning; they both play the same, but it’s fun to switch it up every now and again anyway.

\n

Overcooked! 2

\n

The original Overcooked! garnered a great deal of praise for its quirky mechanics and frantic co-op action, and Overcooked! 2 is no different.

\n

The core mechanics remain the same, but the sequel adds a host of new features and an even zanier story than its predecessor (but don’t worry; if you never played the original, you’ll still be totally fine with this one). The Onion King, in his great foolishness, read from a forbidden book and brought to life an army of undead bread, called The Unbread, now wreaking havoc on the kingdom. Your goal? Cook stuff. Lots of stuff. Just go with it.

\n

You’ll be making a wide variety of dishes, from sushi to burgers, adding the necessary ingredients and whipping things up as fast as you can. One of Overcooked! 2’s biggest draws, though, is the level diversity and interconnection with gameplay. You’ll contend with countless obstacles along the way, from kitchen fires to moving walkways, cars on a busy street to waves rocking your kitchen raft, depending on which level you’re tackling at the time.

\n

Team17 bills it as a co-op game, but it’s completely playable solo if need be, and the toned-down difficulty makes it much more feasibly to play alone than before. The new throw mechanic helps there too. Boasting a lengthy main campaign, extra content, and side puzzles, you’ll be in the kitchen for a long time with this one.

Parkasaurus

\n

If you remember Theme Park from years gone by, you’ll have a good idea of Parkasaurus’s foundations. Like the former, players run a theme park, only with dinos as the main exhibits. Along with crafting a quality park layout and entertaining activities for guests, you also manage the dinosaurs on display. Think Jurassic Park, only…no accidents.

\n

The game gives players a great deal of control over enclosures and the park layout, and each dinosaur type requires a different care strategy to thrive. On top of that, you’ll also gather resources and expand the park’s technology as you grow, and you’ve got employees to manage as well. If it sounds like a lot to manage, that’s because it is.

\n

Fortunately, the game provides tutorials at necessary points, and it’s a good balance between hand-holding and letting players explore for themselves. Guests also leave reviews based on their experiences, so kinda like the town reviews in Animal Crossing, it gives you some concrete problems you can work on for the future. The graphics are simple, but charming, and the user interface is, mercifully, clean and easy to work with, even if there are a few too many clicks required for certain tasks.

\n

The game’s still in early access, with its developers actively calling for player input so they can make improvements where needed; it’s a good way to get your younger players involved in thinking about what makes a game good and how they can potentially help make it even better.

LEGO The Incredibles

\n

LEGO games always build on the success of whatever franchise spawns them, and LEGO: The Incredibles is no different. It combines both the original The Incredibles and its sequel, adding in a new storyline for your enjoyment as well.

\n

You’ll play as your favorite characters from the Parr family, solve wacky puzzles, and enjoy LEGO’s characteristic dry, tongue-in-cheek humor.

\n

As you might expect, you utilize each character’s unique strengths to overcome obstacles. But this isn’t simply an Incredibles skin on the typical LEGO game: It’s fully open world, featuring an explorable hub spanning multiple environments, a day and night cycle, progress reports, character customization, and a host of baddies to take down.

\n

Like any LEGO game, the difficulty never rises too high, but challenge seekers have over 100 characters to unlock and multiple collectibles they can search for. It’s got something for anyone, whether it be a younger gamer not quite skilled yet for more difficult outings, a Pixar fan, a LEGO fan, or just anyone looking for a fun game.

Celeste

\n

The phrase “Nintendo-hard” might be something you haven’t used in a while, not since the days of Mega Man’s original NES outings or Castlevania’s earlier, brutal installments. But Celeste, from MattMakesGames, resurrected this phrase and added new meaning when it launched earlier this year.

\n

It’s a retro-style, pixel-art platformer following a young girl (named Madeline, not Celeste) as she climbs the imposing mountain (which is called Celeste) and tries to face her dark side in the process. It’s a compelling story for sure, but the real attraction here is the gameplay. Celeste features hundreds of rooms to work your way through, each with its own theme, requiring a mix of raw platforming, Madeline’s power-ups, and taking advantage of the environment.

\n

It’s incredibly difficult at times, make no mistake, but the difficulty stems from clever level design more than artificial gimmicks, and the satisfaction you get upon completing a particularly challenging puzzle can’t be measured. For the truly daring, the game also features additional challenges, such as extra puzzles and collectibles forcing an extra layer of strategy out of you beyond just clearing the room.

\n

Because of the challenge, this one is probably best for the 10-12 range, unless you know your younger child can handle (or would benefit from) the perseverance and critical thinking required.

Staxel

\n

It’s the year of farming sims! Or so it may seem. But despite its fix-a-run-down-farm theme, Staxel is more than just a copy of My Time at Portia. It emphasizes farming and relationship building to a greater extent, almost like a cross between Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon, with some Minecraft thrown in as well.

\n

For example, make nice with your fellow residents, and they’ll help you when you need it, and when you and your neighbors work together, it ultimately creates a more vibrant community benefiting everyone. It’s a nice message, but Staxel is, of course, more than just a moral lesson.

\n

Players craft their gameworld, so no playthrough will be the same. Modern metropolis strike your fancy? Build it. Prefer the simple charms of village life? It’s yours. And if you ever get bored with your daily routine, you can shake things up with a spot of fishing or bug hunting.

\n

Staxel makes exploration and caring for your farm more than worthwhile as well, since the resources you get from both drive your customization and expansion, in what turns into a very satisfying and compelling gameplay loop. Combined with multiplayer capabilities, you’ve got a clear winner that will stick around as a staple for a long time. Plus, it’s adorable. Really adorable. Who can resist brightly colored, high resolution block cows?

Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom

\n

Level-5’s Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch launched to almost overwhelming praise, with its heartwarming storyline and Studio Ghibli visuals quickly endearing it to many a heart. It had its share of issues, but Level-5 both addressed those issues and created an even more vast and engaging world with the sequel, Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom.

\n

Despite being numbered as a sequel, you don’t actually have to play the first game to understand what’s going on. The story follows Ding Dong Dell’s young prince, Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum (yes, he’s part cat), after a coup sees the young prince’s family murdered and Evan himself in exile.

\n

It sounds pretty heavy, and the T rating description does include some mild animated blood, but the storytelling and animation provide a lighthearted tone throughout Evan’s long journey. Combined with its positive role models and message of healing society’s divides, it’s more than suitable for 9-12 year olds.

\n

The original was a fairly linear affair—complete main story tasks, collect monsters, do some side quests, and move on. Revenant Kingdom includes those, but also adds in a much larger world to explore and an incredibly addictive kingdom building quest to keep you busy for a long, long time.

\n

The combat this time ‘round is rather different as well, focusing more on the primary characters instead of their monster familiars; you do have creatures called Higgledies for support, but overall, it’s a more streamlined system like you’d expect from a Western RPG instead of a JRPG. Granted, Revenant Kingdom’s combat lacks the challenge of its predecessor, but those seeking difficulty can find it in the game’s optional corrupt monster battles.

Yoku's Island Express

\n

Yoku’s Island Express is a delightful mix of platforming, exploration, and pinball—not something you get every day. Players take control of the titular bug Yoku, unique not just for being a bug, but for his interesting mode of travel as well—a ball. The gorgeous tropical island you explore just so happens to be filled with flippers and bumpers, as well as the usual spike pits and enemies, making movement and puzzle solving much different from the usual platformer.

\n

Yoku’s mission involves restoring postal service to the island, but the game provides much more to do in the process. From defeating certain enemies to solving the residents’ unique problems and exploring the vast island, you’ll find there’s no shortage of things to do in Yoku’s world. Paired with the vibrant visuals and catch soundtrack, these things come together to form a fun and fantastical adventure.

\n

Of course, like with pinball, there are the frustrating moments when you can’t quite hit that one spot until the 20th try, but also like pinball, it’s addictive enough to keep you coming back for more. That and the danger of forgetting the main quest in your exploration and side-quest completing are about the only real difficulties in the game as well, making it perfect for gamers of any age and skill level.

My Time at Portia

\n

My Time at Portia combines Harvest Moon style life management with Minecraft’s resource framing, throwing in some Rune Factory combat and ultimately delivering an engaging and unique simulation game. In what will seem very familiar to HM fans, players arrive in Portia after taking on the daunting task of repairing “Pa’s” Workshop and eventually grow into their new environment.

\n

There’s a lot to do in this game, and best of all, you aren’t restricted with time limits. Gathering resources lets you create new things to spruce up your shop and home, but eventually, you’ll expand into the surrounding town, taking on quests for townsfolk, making friends, and basically just making life sunny for everyone. You’ll also venture further afield in your quest to create the best workshop ever, discovering new settlements and materials and fighting monsters along the way.

\n

Combat is a fairly simple affair, which is fine, given the game’s primary focus on building and creating, but you’ll still need to craft decent weapons and such if you want to stay alive. Like any good life-sim spinoff, you’ve got a plethora of romance and friendship options, with each NPC sporting their own unique personality.

\n

My Time at Portia is still listed as an early access game. Despite entering early access earlier this year, it’s very much a nearly complete game and continually gets updates.

Unravel 2

\n

Unravel 2 continues Yarny’s quirky adventures and intriguing puzzles through amazingly detailed environments. Like Yarny’s first outing, the game tasks players with solving intricate, physics and environment-based puzzles using Yarny’s unique abilities (centered around, you guessed it, yarn). It also revolves around platforming and using those same abilities to traverse the often-dangerous, but always gorgeous game worlds, ranging from serene creeks and forest-like undergrowth to creepy industrial and urban settings.

\n

The challenge is real with this game, but fortunately the developers provided a substantial hint system, so there’s little chance of being stuck for long, and it makes for satisfying gameplay balance. That balance gets skewed a bit in the extra challenge puzzles, which certainly live up to their name, but these challenges don’t form part of the main story anyway and can be totally ignored if the player wishes.

\n

There’s also co-op mode, so you or another player can jump in and help a younger gamer who might be struggling or just join in the fun as well. There’s not as much story compared to the original Unravel, but it’s difficult to call that a substantial negative point, when the gameplay itself is as spot-on and absorbing as it is.

It's not hard to tell a lot of PC games don't exactly have younger audiences in mind, which makes buying for kids a bit tricky. Even more difficult is finding a game with the right difficulty balance to keep their attention without frustrating them.

\n

In and amongst the titles you're probably playing, though, lies a wealth of PC games for 7-12 year olds. From platforming to retro, puzzle solving and even RPGs, these games are perfect for solo play, playing with friends, or of course, playing together as a family.

This sweet game captivated players with the original, and the sequel adds the ability to play with a friend (or a parent). Make your own Yarny, then embark on an adventure that promotes teamwork and friendship.

\n

Guide your Yarnies through an adventure in a side-scrolling puzzle world that's buzzing with life. Playing together, each player controls one of the characters; alone, you can switch between them at will.

It's heartwarming and fun, but it can also be challenging in a great way at times, all of which makes it a perfect game for little gamers to cut their teeth on!

Super Bomberman R

\n

Price: $39.99
Rating: 4.5/5 on PlayStation Store
Recommended Age: 11+

\n

Everyone's favorite little bomb-spewing guy is back, and he's got all his friends with him! The classic gameplay returns in this great game, which is reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons.

\n

Bomberman and his friends are up against some tough opponents this time, and each baddie comes with his own special skills (a la Megaman). Blast your way through stages, gather powerups, and take down the enemies.. but try not to blow yourself up while you're at it.

\n

This game receives a higher than usual recommended age because, while the idea is simple, it can get tough! It also, quite obviously, features exploding bombs and some silly violence in the cutscenes.

Yoku's Island Express

\n

Price: $13.99
Rating: 4.5/5 on PlayStation Store
Recommended Age: 10+

\n

In this game, you play Yoku, a little dung beetle postmaster tasked with making some important deliveries and saving the day. Cue the poop jokes.

\n

Okay, aside from the unfortunate nature of the main character (and hey, the ball he rolls around is white!), this fun little game is an odd mix of Metroidvania platforming and pinball.

\n

That means that it's challenging, at times to the point of frustration. Yoku can't move much on his own, so he just rolls around and relies on the player to use pinball flippers to fling him around to new destinations.

\n

The game is rated 10+ for cartoon violence and crude humor (see: poop jokes) but it's the challenge that really makes this one better for slightly more seasoned little gamers.

The Swords of Ditto

\n

Price: $19.99
Rating: 4/5 on PlayStation Store
Recommended Age: 11+
Get it on: PlayStation Store

\n

The Swords of Ditto isn't perfect, but it's a fun little game in the spirit of the Zelda games that's definitely more fun to play co-op.

\n

Upon pulling a magical sword from a grave, you're tasked with becoming stronger so you can take on the evil enchantress Mormo and bring peace back to the land.. at least for the next 100 years.

\n

The game is procedurally generated and technically uses permadeath, but is set up in such a way that you're able to enjoy it without frustrations. Kids will enjoy the whimsical cartoon-like visuals, the literal "toys" that the characters attack with, and the cute kazoo-based soundtrack.

\n

We set the recommended age a bit higher for this one (it's rated ESRB-10) because despite the cutesy visuals, some of the puzzles are not always clear and there's a bit of reading. Also, you pull swords out of children's graves. It's kind of morbid in that regard, but not much else.

Scribblenauts Showdown

Price: $39.99
Rating: 4/5 on PlayStation Store

\n

Scribblenauts meets Mario Party in this party game, meant to be played by families together. Some reviewers were disappointed in the game's repetitive nature, but as a family-friendly "together time" game, it's definitely a fun way to spend an afternoon.

\n

The game marks a stark departure from the usual style of Scribblenauts and instead uses 25 mini-games to pit players against each other in a race to the finish.

\n

The game does retain certain aspects of the Scribblenauts franchise, though, like the ability to write practically anything to life. This makes it a good way for kids to practice their writing skills and outside the box thinking.

Enter the whimsical world of De Blob with this fun sequel. The sequel is a great standalone game that holds its own without needing to play the first, though you may want to after playing this second installment.

E3 2018 Nintendo Direct Recap: All the Trailers & Release Dates https://www.gameskinny.com/mlgxy/e3-2018-nintendo-direct-recap-all-the-trailers-release-dates https://www.gameskinny.com/mlgxy/e3-2018-nintendo-direct-recap-all-the-trailers-release-dates Tue, 12 Jun 2018 19:58:41 -0400 Ashley Shankle

Nintendo going the Direct route for E3 these past few years has been a strange ride, but fans can always count on E3 Directs to have two things: Some anticipated reveals, and a lot of gameplay.

Though today's biggest Nintendo announcements were Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and the Fortnite launch, they did reveal a number of other ambitious projects that can find a home in most Switch libraries.

Out of all of Nintendo's showings today, I am most excited to see Kenichiro Tsukuda's DAEMON X MACHINA in action as it's been a long time since we've seen a mecha game from Armored Core's backbone producer. And the Macross guy doing the mecha designs? Yeah, I'll take that.

DAEMON X MACHINA may be my most hyped game out of this Direct, but chances are you're excited about any of the other great titles shown during the conference.

There's something for everyone in Nintendo Direct E3 2018!

Fire Emblem Three Houses trailer

It's been how long since Fire Emblem has seen a release on a home console? Ah, that's right: It's been 10 years since Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn was released on the Wii.

Fire Emblem Three Houses
looks to be the most graphically/technically impressive game in the series yet. Look for its release in Spring 2019.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: "Torna -- The Golden Country" trailer

The only expansion in Nintendo's lineup this E3, "Torna -- The Golden Country" is set 500 years before the events in Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

"Torna" won't just be a story expansion; it will also feature tweaks to the battle system, allowing you to play as both Blades and Drivers in combat. This is a sure buy for fans, look for it on the Nintendo Switch on September 21.

DAEMON X MACHINA trailer

We need more mecha games these days. Fact.

DAEMON X MACHINA
from Marvelous! is headed by Armored Core producer Kenichiro Tsukuda, with designs from Macross's Shoji Kawamori, not to mention the other talent involved. It will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch in 2019.

Super Mario Party trailer

The Mario Party games have come in a lot of numbers, but none of them have had "Super" in the name.

Super Mario Party
will be able to make use of two Switch consoles for unique four-player gameplay and minigames. For the first game in the series to be Super, you've got to assume Nintendo is confident in this entry to their long-running party game series. Expect to see this one on the Switch this fall on October 5!

Overcooked 2 trailer

Overcooked has swiftly taken over as one of the go-to co-op games for many, so it makes sense for developer Ghost Town Games to keep the ball rolling with a sequel.

Overcooked 2
will feature more recipes, kitchens, and chefs to keep returning players engaged -- and if that wasn't enough, the game will also come with online multiplayer. There's no such thing as too many cooks.

Along with all of the above, Nintendo showed the following games briefly during today's Direct:

  • Hollow Knight (2018)
  • Fortnite (Today)
  • Killer Queen Black (Winter 2018)
  • SNK Heroines (September 7)
  • Octopath Traveler (July 13)
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ (2018)

---

And that's it! Everything you need to know about the great games shown at Nintendo's E3 Direct!

As always, stay tuned to GameSkinny for more news and information on these titles as they develop.
