GDC 2016 showcased some of the most impressive development centered around virtual reality. We got to see players scale treacherous mountains, create smoothies, and fire up their very own lightsaber. But a group of developers stood out from the rest of the pack by creating a game that utilized one of our other senses — taste.

Introducing, Planet Licker, the game made to be played with your tongue.

In Planet Licker, players are handed a custom-made controller with three different ice sculptures. Each sculpture has it's own distinct flavor and each lick is its own digital input. Licking these buttons sends an in-game monster flying towards a planet of the same color. The goal of the game is to consume as many planets as you can within a set time limit. As a player races against time to devour as many planets as they can, they will also have to avoid obstacles like space mines in order to win.

As of now, the game is just a prototype. But it's certainly something very interesting and exciting. I can see some developers taking advantage of this idea and finding their own niche in the gaming community.

Imagine the potential of a Master Chef Taste Test simulator. Now that's a game worth buying.

At this year's Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco, there are plenty of games being shown. The GDC is being held from March 16-18th and over this time different interactive games will be shown and ideas will be exchanged.  One such game that was shown on day one was Planet Lickers.

Planet Lickers is a game where the player licks flavored ice pops on a USB-connected controller.  By licking a popsicle you can maneuver your character around obstacles and towards the nearest planet of the same color.

Now I don't know about you but licking plain tasting plastic just doesn't seem appealing to me while I play a game.  The developers of Planet Lickers though have us covered by rolling out some flavors for your taste buds delight.  The current flavors created are Orange Cream, Matcha Lemonade, Blue Vanilla, Coffee, Beet, and Blueberry.

Planet Licker avoids the awkward moment of you handing the slobber filled controller to the next person by bringing replaceable, single-use popsicles. So no worries about using a 3-month-old controller and licking the same surface over multiple times. So while the controller is used numerous times the actual area being licked is not. According to the Planet Licker website they choose flavors that work in harmony for their demo's. My question is what flavors work in harmony with the beet flavor?
