What's your favorite RTS game to chill out with while waiting on Warcraft 3: Reforged? Sound off in the comments below, and we'll see you in the Battle.net lobby when it finally lands January 28!

\n

Of course, with the remake coming soon, we're left wondering: is a true successor ever going to come from Blizzard? Will we ever get Warcraft 4

\n

Knowing Blizzard's track record with canceling anticipated projects and the timeline on the company actually releasing follow-ups to major franchises, we won't hold our breath.

Sins Of A Solar Empire: Rebellion

\n

Love both turn-based 4X expansion games and fast-paced RTS titles? You get both with Sins Of A Solar Empire, and its a winning combination.

\n

Even before diving into the modding community, the replayability available here is simply huge, and somehow, Rebellion is still getting new patches, updates, and events from the development team eight years after its initial launch.

\n

This is an old one, but one that should be at the top of your list if you've never played it.

A Year Of Rain

\n

When looking for an experience very similar to the original Warcraft 3: Reign Of Chaos, it doesn't get much closer than A Year Of Rain. The influence and inspiration it takes from Warcraft 3 is very clear, but the twist here is that you can play co-op as a team of two.

\n

The only thing to keep in mind before jumping into A Year Of Rain is that this is an Early Access and unfinished release. There's a lot of potential here, but you have to see it. There's still lots of room for improvement overall.

Seven Kingdoms Ancient Adversaries

\n

There aren't many super-old-school games that manage to effectively work in espionage and diplomacy to the standard RTS conquer formula. But Ancient Adversaries pulls it off.

\n

Managing your population and morale is just as important as amassing overwhelming force, and you've actually have to think about what you will do with a conquered area after taking it over.

\n

As a game that came out in the late 1990s, Ancient Adversaries is a little clunky due to an aging UI, but it's still worth it for fans of old-school RTS titles.

Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal

\n

A mix of tower defense and RTS, Creeper World 3 is radically different than the rest of the games on our list, but still well worth playing if you want to try something new.

\n

Instead of hordes of orcs or stormtroopers, here, you are basically fighting a spilled liquid that terraforms the terrain. Your goal is to stop its relentless advance and eventually fight back to take out the source. It's somewhat like Plague Inc., with a nefarious virus-like substance polluting the land.

\n

There's a lot more strategy to it than you might think, though, and the number of levels and playthrough styles on offer are staggering. With a level editor included, you could easily sink a very silly number of hours into mastering every aspect of Creeper World 3.

The Tone Rebellion

\n

Since releasing back in 1997, there has never been an RTS quite like this one, and it baffles me there's never been a remake or sequel in all that time.

\n

Very much a product of its time, The Tone Rebellion features a quasi-3D style that will bring to mind contemporaries like Alien Legacy or Septerra Core.

\n

As a leader of the jellyfish-style Floaters, your goal is to free your people from the tentacles of the mighty Leviathan. With light RPG elements and a totally different faction selection than your typical RTS, this is a game that deserved more attention than it ever got.

\n

Sadly, this is one of those classic games that never made it to digital outlets. Your only options now are to find a disc floating around somewhere or hit up an abandonware site. Make sure to give it a vote on the GOG community wishlist page if you want to see it make a proper digital return!

Age Of Empires 3

\n

Plenty of gamers still look with rose-colored glasses at Age Of Empires 2 as the pinnacle of the series. And yeah, it had a lot going for it back in the day. Hell, the game's been re-released twice, with the latest Definitive Edition bringing brand-new campaigns and civs to the game.

\n

For something a little different, though, I recommend hitting up the sequel if you haven't played it yet or just want a historical game in the RTS genre.

\n

The time periods and locations on display here aren't often explored in the real-time strategy genre, skipping around from Spanish knights in the 16th Century to various First Nations conflicts, the American Revolution, and even the Indian Rebellion in the 1850s.

\n

That's not to mention several new series' mechanics make AoE 3 well-worth checking out.

Tooth and Tail

\n

Ready for a tale of riots, revolution, and meat, my furry comrade? Imagine if Fievel Mousekewitz and his clan decided to stay home and devour their oppressors while overthrowing the bourgeois instead of moving to America and you've got Tooth & Tail.

\n

Many of the traditional RTS base building elements are turned on their heads here, resulting in fast-paced matches as the Longcoats, Commonfolk, KSR, and Civilized factions engage in a war of supremacy to discover who gets to eat tonight.

\n

If you dig anthropomorphic mice fighting for justice (whether Mouse Guard or Redwall), you'll have a good time here.

Battlefleet Gothic: Armada 2

\n

If you like the ship-to-ship combat of Empire At War and want to skip the ground-based skirmishes altogether, then the Battlefleet Gothic series is the way to go.

\n

While most of the Warhammer 40K games are based around space marines or various alien factions engaged in wars of attrition on various planets, these titles finally give the Imperial Navy its proper due.

\n

From the killer ship designs to the unique space-based maps, there's a ton to love for Games Workshop fans here, although the PvP and skirmish modes are probably more fun than the campaign in the longterm.

Star Wars: Empire At War

\n

If you somehow missed it, yes, there is in fact a proper real time strategy Star Wars title set during the rebellion era, and it is absolutely as awesome as that sounds like it would be.

\n

Whether moving resistance soldiers through the rainy wilderness to take down a shield generator or commanding a fleet of Star Destroyers to destroy rebel X-Wing scum, Empire At War is pretty much everything you could want from an RTS Star Wars game.

\n

While the base campaign is fun, the real goods are found in the modding community. Devoted fans have painstakingly recreated the Clone Wars and other famous eras of franchise history, which vastly increases your potential play time.

Northgard

\n

Viking-themed RTS? Sign me up! The fact that this one is from the indie developer behind the clever Evoland titles is just icing on the cake.

\n

Northgard has less micromanagement than other fast-paced strategy entries, and it has a more "board-game" feel to it. But it's still most definitely a real-time game that can blow away large chunks of your time.

\n

In another fun twist, Northgard works in some interesting Catan-style elements for a different economy and resource management system. It also has some decent "expansions" worth checking out.

Company Of Heroes 2

\n

A unique take on historical strategy, Company Of Heroes 2 offers a slightly different focus than most of the other RTS games on our list.

\n

Starting as the Russian army moves in to break the German forces, this tactical look at WWII features an infantry creation and management system that has been shifted and streamlined from the typical strategy game.

\n

CoH2 has a solid balance of objective-based gameplay and RTS front-line conquering. While extremely intense because of the subject matter, Company Of Heroes 2 still has enough entertaining gameplay elements to keep you hooked and playing for hours. It, like Dawn of War, is often part of quarterly sales on Steam and GoG.

Dawn Of War

\n

Somehow, the Games Workshop license still hasn't managed to produce a better 40K real-time strategy game than this ancient (and let's be honest, kinda' ugly) entry from Relic Entertainment.

\n

While a lot of fans were enamored in the first few days, the luster of Dawn Of War 3 wore off pretty quickly. Between bugs in the campaign and the fact that the single-player mode was basically a tutorial for the game's mutliplayer component, things went downhill fast.

\n

Skip that title in the series and come back to this hallowed classic instead. The story campaign of the original Dawn Of War is still incredibly solid for its age.

\n

If you just want to jump into some RTS action and take over territory, though, both the standalone Dark Crusade and/or Soulstorm "expansions" are the way to go. You can grab all of them at Steam or GOG for a very reasonable price these days.

Ready for the re-imagined Warcraft 3: Reforged to finally hit the Battle.net launcher? We've only been waiting 18 years for a proper return to Azeroth in all its RTS glory. And now, it's nearly here!

\n

After Starcraft: Remastered arrived back in 2017, it shouldn't have been much of a shock that Warcraft 3: Reign Of Chaos would get an overhaul next. Frankly, it needed one. While the cut scenes were gritty look and the mechanics solid, the actual gameplay featured a cartoonish graphical aesthetic that didn't quite match the dark story set in the world of Azeroth.

\n

We still have a few weeks until we can finally return to fight for orcish independence, though, so in the meantime, you might want to polish your classic RTS skills with a few rounds of skirmishes. With that in mind, we've rounded up all the top real-time strategy games to play if you just can't wait for Reforged to arrive at the end of January.

\n

We're going with mostly classic titles here either because they came out decades ago, or just emulate that old-school style with a few more modern entries as well to round things out.

Let's command and conquer!

5 Star Wars Legends Video Game Characters Disney Can Make Canon https://www.gameskinny.com/2x3a5/5-star-wars-legends-video-game-characters-disney-can-make-canon https://www.gameskinny.com/2x3a5/5-star-wars-legends-video-game-characters-disney-can-make-canon Thu, 17 Oct 2019 16:08:31 -0400 The Uncanny Fox

Ah, Star Wars. The definitive sci-fi/fantasy franchise of our time. Everyone has an opinion on the direction of the series, but no one can deny that it’s been an exciting ride since Disney bought the franchise from George Lucas.

One issue of contention was Disney’s decision in 2014 to declare the old Expanded Universe of books, games, and other assorted media null and void, electing to wipe the slate clean for the franchise going forward. I’m not here to argue whether or not that was the right decision. Personally, I think it was for the best given the tangled mess the continuity became, but that's a debate that has been done to death already. It’s not as if Disney’s going to reverse its decision any time soon.

Instead, I'm here to take a look at some of the best video game characters from the old “Legends” timeline. I want to see if any can be incorporated into the new EU in a future game or another piece of associated media.

It’s no secret that the Star Wars video games, as with the rest of the “Legends” universe, have given us plenty of interesting characters. It’s also no secret that the creators of the new EU have proven willing and able to adapt old characters into their works like they did with Grand Admiral Thrawn in Rebels and the Clone Commando Delta Squad in The Clone Wars. I mean heck: they actually slipped a reference to that terrible Star Wars fighting game in Solo, so anything can happen.

In preparation for the upcoming release of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, I’ve decided to make this list of characters, and ponder how they can be brought into official canon via a Disney Plus series like The Mandalorian — or whatever Rian Johnson, Kevin Feige, or the Game Of Thrones guys are doing.

Prince Xizor (Shadows Of The Empire)

Now, this one’s more of a boss than a playable character, and he’s more well-known for the book and comic adaptations of the game he’s in, but he still counts.

The leader of the infamous Black Sun crime ring, Falleen warlord Prince Xizor makes his mark on the Star Wars universe as one of the most influential beings in the galaxy — aside from the Emperor himself.

Commanding a massive criminal empire and adorning himself in all the finest riches, Xizor sets out to get revenge on Darth Vader for killing his family by supplanting Vader as Palpatine’s right-hand man. To this end, Xizor plans to humiliate the Dark Lord by killing Luke, thus ruining his and the Emperor’s plot to turn Luke to the Dark Side.

During this scheme, Xizor proves an influential figure, hiring all manner of bounty hunters to claim young Skywalker’s life, and Xizor even attempts to worm his way into the Rebellion’s good graces by using his species’ natural pheromone abilities to seduce Leia. But in the end, his ambitions get the better of him, as Vader catches wind of his plot and settles it the way Vader always does this sort of thing.

Admittedly, I’m not as familiar with Xizor as I am with others on this list (I’ve never really played Shadows Of The Empire that much), but Xizor would make for an interesting foe in a Disney Plus series or TV show. He was kind of a big deal back when the game and connecting multimedia “movie without a movie” project came out in 1997. And no, his figure being used as a reference for the crowd scene in The Phantom Menace doesn’t count!

How To Make Xizor Canon

This is an easy one since the Black Sun itself was already brought into the lore proper during the Maul arc of The Clone Wars Season 5. There, it is one of the many criminal groups the former Sith allies himself with to help take over Mandalore.

So, with a few tweaks, it’s well within reason that Luke and company could come across Xizor in the year between Empire and Jedi.

The Zann Consortium (Empire At War: Forces Of Corruption)

I have a confession to make: when I’m playing Empire At War’s Galactic Conquest mode with the Zann Consortium, my primary army for attacking enemy planets usually consists of Hero units and a couple of Defilers. That’s it. No soldiers, no tanks, nothing else. Why? Because the Consortium’s Hero units are all the army you need.

These guys are awesome, from the Nightsister Silri to the samurai-like Urai Fenn and the mastermind himself, Tyber Zann. The way the Consortium operates in the game is far more subtle than the raid-focused Rebellion or strong-arm Empire; the Consortium first “corrupts” planets with the use of a Defiler, setting up some sort of criminal operation on the world. Then, if need be, they send their minions down to the surface to conquer the planet. Such a strategy might employ Urai’s blades and stealth abilities, Silri’s Dark Side powers, or even the bio-weaponry of IG-88.

With such a deadly cast of outlaws in their ranks, this band of cutthroats lays waste to anything that stands in their way, making them one E.U. faction that’s begging to be put on the big screen.

How To Make Zann Consortium Canon

Another easy one: just have Tyber and crew show up after either the Empire falls or the end of the Sequel Trilogy. Nightsisters already exist due to Mother Talzin and her clan, so Silri can be a descendant of one of them that survived Grievous’ purge back in The Clone Wars.

Neither Bossk nor IG-88 have died in the new canon to my knowledge, and Tyber himself can battle the First Order instead of the Empire. As for Urai, he can be a reject from the old Jedi Order or something. I can see him handling any Order 66 business that would come his way.

Starkiller (The Force Unleashed)

A bit of a controversial choice here, but I think this guy is pretty awesome.

The secret apprentice to Darth Vader, Starkiller personifies the power of the Force like few others. We witness him take down some of the strongest Jedi in the Order (Shakk Ti, anyone?), tear down with his mind everything up to and including a Star Destroyer, generally reduce the population of a given level to “one”, and, in the finale of the game, defeat not one, but two Sith Lords.

In addition to being a Force-enabled juggernaut, Starkiller has a great story, harkening back to Star Wars’ classic theme of redemption as he abandons his master’s teachings and plays a crucial role in the Empire’s eventual destruction.

Say what you will about the game he appears in (I like it, by the way), but Starkiller is the real deal. Plus, bonus points for Sam Witwer. That guy can sound evil like nobody’s business.

How To Make Starkiller Canon

Okay, here’s where things get tricky. It’s entirely possible for Vader to have taken on a secret apprentice without Palpatine’s knowledge  even in the new canon (although the existence of the Inquisitors puts doubt on why Vader would bother to hide him). We could still have him gathering the Rebel leaders in an attempt to distract Palps from Vader’s efforts to overthrow him.

The problem lies in how his story ends, and I doubt the First Order would name their superweapon after a guy that almost destroyed their dear Empire, so his name might have to be changed. And there’s the issue of whether or not he killed Shaak Ti; it was officially confirmed that Vader did back at the Temple during Order 66, so she couldn’t be in exile on Felucia.

That plays into Mariss Brood’s plot as well. So, Disney will probably have to replace Shaak Ti with a new Jedi  or at least someone who’s death hasn’t been confirmed in an official source.

But everything else could fit in the canon nicely with a few tweaks here and there. I’d just stick with material from the first game, though; the end of The Force Unleashed II just leaves a massive plot hole, and the whole “clone Starkiller” thing is dumb anyway.

Kyle Katarn (Jedi Knight Series)

Hyperspace exists because it doesn’t want to be in the same universe as Kyle Katarn. For a while, Kyle Katarn was jokingly nicknamed “the Chuck Norris of Star Wars.” It’s easy to see why given his backstory and exploits across the Jedi Knight series.

Kyle starts out as an Imperial Stormtrooper (one of the few who could actually shoot), but he defects to the Alliance when he finds out the Empire killed his father. He then:

  • Single-handedly steals the plans to the Death Star
  • Thwarts an evil plot by the Empire involving Dark troopers
  • Teaches himself how to be a Jedi
  • Defeats a whopping eight Darksiders (by my count, at least; I could be wrong)
  • Becomes the top Battlemaster of the Jedi Order
  • Takes part in defeating every E.U. threat from the Yuuzhan Vong to the Dark Side-turned son of Han and Leia (a concept that’s already been adapted into the new movies).

His life story alone is awesome, but what makes Katarn an excellent video game character is how much fun he is to play as. Whether he’s using blasters or his trusty lightsaber, there’s rarely a dull moment behind the beard of Kyle. Plus, has any other Jedi sabered a not-Sith so hard time slowed to a Matrix-style crawl as the baddie fell? Didn’t think so.

How To Make Kyle Canon

Obliviously, Kyle wouldn’t have stolen the Death Star plans given Rogue One already told that story with someone else, but there’s still plenty of room for him to do awesome stuff post-Jedi.

I would have him be one of the new recruits Rey gets for whatever new order of Force Users she sets up after The Rise Of Skywalker (if he were a part of Luke’s order from after Return Of The Jedi, he would have to die in order for the story to work, and I don’t want that any more than you do).

I would then adapt the games from Jedi Knight onward as necessary. Maybe have Dessan and company be some kind of splinter group from the Knights Of Ren or something. Of course, this would all depend on how The Rise Of Skywalker plays out…

Revan (Knights Of The Old Republic)

Hailed by the Jedi as “The Prodigal Knight,” feared by the galaxy as “The Dark Lord,” and widely regarded by the fandom for his sweet battle attire, Revan could quite possibly be the most refreshing Star Wars character to never appear in a movie.

Depending on your choices in Knights of the Old Republic, Revan’s story could be one of redemption or destruction, they could be male or female, and they could be of any ethnicity or skill-set. But regardless, it's clear that Revan has made a permanent impression on the galaxy. Just mention him to any character in the game: they will either react in fear to the thought of the Dark Lord or display reverence to the most powerful warrior in the galaxy.

Revan’s reputation proceeds them everywhere they go: providing both a warning to aspiring Jedi about how even the Order’s mightiest can fall to the Dark Side and a tale of how even the darkest of enemies can find salvation. This, combined with their incredible mastery of the Force and their impressive appearance, make them one of the greatest Jedi who have ever lived in the galaxy far, far away.

How To Make Revan Canon

This is another easy one; in fact, it’s already been attempted in an episode of The Clone Wars before the scene featuring Revan was cut for time.

The KOTOR period is quite far removed from anything we’ve seen in the movies already, so incorporating it, and by extension, Revan, into the current canon is just a simple matter of making a new show/movie/game/book/whatever featuring it.

The only real point of contention that I see happening is what Revan looks like, since the character was customizable in the game. But that’s a discussion for another day.

---

And there you have it, the the Star Wars Legends characters that I think can make it into the new canon. With the upcoming release of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it will be exciting to see if any of these characters make the cut in future Star Wars media, be that in another game, comic or even an appearance in a Disney Plus show. Until then, May The Force Be With You.

Stormtrooper

\n

Cosplayers: Unknown

\n

What would a Star Wars Celebration be without some stormtoopers marching about? It wouldn't be one, that's what.

Here, a stormtrooper, clad in his all-white armor, stands over an Ewok clinging to his leg, Return of the Jedi-style. With a questioning gesture, he is either unsure what the creature is actually trying to accomplish.

This Jawa went the traditional route. Covered from head to toe by a brown robe, its yellow eyes glow amongst the blackness of its hooded face. This Jawa has bundled up a battered BB-8, most likely looking to make a nice sale of the droid.

Thrawn started off as a Grand Admiral in the Imperial Navy before the Galactic Civil War. With knowledge of the uncharted regions of the galaxy, he was an asset to Emperor Palpatine. Han Solo

\n

Cosplayer: Unknown

\n

Han Solo is one of the most iconic characters in the Star Wars franchise. A smuggler who falls in love with Princess Leia, he has remained a fan favorite for the last 40 years.

Here, Han gets a little genderbend, though the cosplayer stays as close to his original costume as possible. Short hair, white shirt, black vest, and a blaster, she has all the main Solo points down.

Uncanny Megan and Dallas Nagata White take a creative approach to their Jawa cosplay. Going a sexier route, they cut off the midriff and wear short skirts. Darth Vader Unmasked

\n
Cosplayer: Unknown
\n

Darth Vader is obviously a very popular cosplay. The Dark Lord of the Sith, a villain with his own theme music, and a loud mouth breather, Darth Vader is a mainstay within the Star Wars franchise. It is a rarity, however, to see him without his helmet when cosplayed. Here he is, though, suit fully detailed, helmet in hand, and scarred face exposed to the sunlight. The work on this cosplay is incredible, especially the scarring on his face.

At first, I had to take a second look at this cosplay trio. The cartoonish aspect of their costumes is spot on, making me do a double take to make sure they were real people. The crafting, detail, and paint on the masks are amazing. The cartoonish feel of the attire matches the masks and really brings Star Wars Rebels to life.

Kylo Ren and Rey

\n

Cosplayers: Unknown

Kylo Ren and Rey were the stars of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. A new generation of lightsaber-wielding characters for a new generation of viewers, this pair captured the hearts of fans around the world: Kylo Ren, the grandson of Darth Vader, trying so desperately to follow in his footsteps. Rey, a strong female who can use the Force.

\n

These two cosplay their chosen character magnificently. Kylo Ren is masked, with the small details in the mask and cloak really showing the dedication to recreating the character. Wielding his tri-saber, he is intimidating. Next to him stands Rey in her white outfit, wielding the legendary Skywalker lightsaber and her staff. The small details, such as her pristine hair and belt, really help the cosplay come to life.

Boba Fett is one of the most notorious deadly bounty hunters in a galaxy far, far way, who, under the charge of Jabba the Hutt, is tasked with hunting down Han Solo. From the blaster bolt on the helmet (which he received from another infamous bounty hunter) and vambraces to the intricate construction of the props, Widen15's Boba cosplay is astounding.

Humble Bundle is at it again, and they're offering an insane deal for a bunch of games in the name of charity.

This time around, Humble Bundle is offering up to 12 different Star Wars games, depending on how much you decide to pay.

The gamers who pay any amount of money get Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, and Star Wars: Dark Forces.

Gamers who pay more than $12 dollars get Star Wars Empire at War: Gold Pack, Star Wars The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II.

Gamers who pay more than the average (which now sits at $11.46 at time of writing) get Star Wars: Battlefront II, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, and Star Wars: Republic Commando, with more games coming.

All of the games in total can cost up to $115 dollars, but gamers can pay what they want, depending on how much they might want, or just how much they want to pay. All of the games are on Steam for Windows, and need you to link your Steam account to the site to redeem your keys. Customers can decide where their money goes to from Humble Bundle, to the developers, or to Unicef.

(Worst) Star Wars: Empire at War

\n

This was the response to people not liking Rebellion. To put it bluntly, the original release for this game was a farce, with a bungled ground battle system full of awkwardly balanced units, and space combat that favored the Rebels far too often. (Also, the Rebels were favored in nearly every other way as well.) The AI would either rush you endlessly, or do absolutely nothing.

\n

The sequel, Forces of Corruption, fixed a number of the original game's issues, but also introduced further imbalances, and had an odd issue with frame rate decreases, despite minimal graphical improvements. Even on a modern machine, it can struggle to push a consistent 60 on the lowest settings, whereas the original runs at upwards of 100 near max.

\n

There is one upside though, and that is that developer Petroglyph made the game HIGHLY moddable. So even if the multiplayer maps were terrible at times, fans could make some of the finest RTS maps you've ever seen (or the most absurd, in many cases). With an integrated chat lobby and friend system, the multiplayer remained the highlight here, and it's worth looking into Hamachi or Game Ranger to play it with a few friends. Other than that though, this game is 100% ignorable.

(Best) Star Wars: Battlefront 2

\n

This is the little game that could. It was only given a year for development, had to rush in a campaign at the last minute, nearly had as many tactical features as Battlefield 2, and tried to restore cut ideas from the original game. Yet, even though it had so much going against its core development, Pandemic pulled it off and sold millions of copies.

\n

I cannot even begin to level with you how active the community base is, nor how much moreso it was back in the day. There's a ton of fan-created content: an unofficial 1.3 patch, a new KotOR era, additional campaigns, and more maps than I can count. I speak from personal experience when I say that all were made with some of the  most damn frustrating mod tools on the planet.

\n

Game Ranger, Open Spy, and Hamachi support Battlefront II. Until EA/DICE's reboot hits store shelves, enjoy your time with this fine game from Pandemic's twilight years.

(Best) Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds

\n

This game almost looks like a total conversion mod for Age of Empires II, packaged as a new game. But the power of the level editor and the new ranged-focused combat brought fresh life to the gameplay.

\n

Additionally, every faction had varied attributes. For example, Gungans could build underwater structures and were the Zerg-like faction, making the species actually useful for once. Every campaign had unique ideas to offer, and the expansion pack tossed in a fair number of hard-as-nails battles to complete.

\n

Really though, praise must be given to the community. I've lost the link ages ago, but I once played a custom scenario in this game that functioned more like an action game than a strategy game. The creator even made navigation hazards and moving "blades" to navigate around. Others have made old-school RPG inspired levels. Some maps were made for live role-playing with friends. Others tested every ounce of strategy.

\n

Then there's the ongoing Expanding Fronts mod that aims to make several sub-faction variants to further specialize your preferred means of conquest. Despite being, for all intents and purposes, abandonware, the fanbase has not given up on it yet. Once again, multiplayer is possible through Hamachi and Game Ranger.

(Best) Star Wars: Tie Fighter

\n

This game is without a doubt one of the most highly praised Star Wars flight sims in existence. While it's been ages since I last played it, Tie Fighter remains an impressive game. There were hidden objectives, solid (at the time) cutscenes, and a fair amount of story context to tie everything together.

\n

If the age of Tie Fighter worries you though, X-Wing Alliance is a more modern entry point into the series. While lacking the more unique aspects that Tie Fighter touted, it features a scenario editor, and boasts the best graphics in the series. It also had some civilian missions, a rare perspective in a Star Wars game.

(Best) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and The Sith Lords

\n

This game and it's sequel, The Sith Lords, are two of the best RPGs in existence, let alone two of the best Star Wars games in existence. The original introduced us to a new form of action-RPG we'd never seen before, all while weaving a Star Wars tale that was equal parts traditional and new style. It gave us HK-47, the Dance Dance Malak cheat, and an epic story of redemption (or revenge). There's also a fan expansion pack that adds a new companion, and over seven hours of new content, with voice-overs and everything.

\n

Then The Sith Lords rolls up and offers a dark, introspective, and almost gothic Star Wars universe. Your master, Kreia, stands starkly in the gray, while most Jedi and Sith argue absolutes. As a whole, the game is the exact opposite of the Star Wars prequels. Instead of impressive graphics or famous locations, The Sith Lords is heavily grounded in criticizing both sides of the force. The discussions on cause and effect, and how no matter what we do, something good and bad can come from our decisions, are some of the deepest topics any Star Wars game has covered.

\n

Unfortunately, the sequel was marred by a rushed development, but modders have seen fit to fix the vast majority of that, in addition to new planets for you to explore. There's even a full, total conversion mod, with a brand new storyline that follows up the first two games.

\n

This is a fairly forgotten 4X strategy sim that Crusader Kings fans will enjoy. Make no mistake, this game is obtuse and vague, requiring you to learn its systems on your own. Once you have it under your control though, it's arguably the most sandbox-like Star Wars game in existence.

\n

Have Luke duel Palpatine first and leave Vader to rule the Empire? Sure. Or maybe Luke discovers Han has a force sensitivity and trains him the in the ways of the Jedi. Perhaps the Rebels turn to terror tactics and a firm grip equal to the Empire to win the war. Maybe even have the Empire finally becomes a benevolent peace force and favors diplomacy over suppression.

\n

The amount of stuff you can do through just a few menus and a limited space battle simulator is astounding. Getting to the good stuff will bore those who want an action-packed adventure, but the most patient gamers will find this game to be a treat.

\n

Niche as the game may be, there's not only a community still playing the game online through Game Ranger and Hamachi, but it's also got modding support too, which you can find here.

(Best) X-Wing: Rogue Squadron

\n

This is one of those games I wish hadn't become an exclusive, because it felt so at home on PC with its relaxed, arcade-style shooting and awesome mission design. The campaign primarily stretched from A New Hope up to The Battle of Hoth, but also features a mission set in the New Republic Era of the now defunct Expanded Universe.

\n

The graphics have aged as much as any other N64 game, but it still holds a lot of charm. Missions are varied, from all-out assaults to interceptions, and even a tense breakout/escort mission. Until now, it hasn't been available on any system beyond Windows XP, but fans with a modern PC can finally play it.

There are also several small utility mods, all the game's cheat codes, the soundtrack, and the original demo, available on ModDB.

For those of you who don't know, I'm a bit of a Star Wars gaming nerd. Between LEGO and Lucas Arts, my childhood had lots of lightsabers and X-Wings, so I know exactly which Lucas Arts games are stinkers, and which ones are hidden (or not so hidden) gems. If there's mod support available for any of these games, I'll link to it in the descriptions so you can get all your money's worth.

Bonus! -- Mass Effect: Unification -- Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Mod

\n

"What's this? Mass Effect? But I thought this was a Star Wars slideshow?" No worries, it still is, just this is one little bonus mod for fans of both Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and Bioware's own science fiction universe. The total conversion mod Mass Effect: Unification turns Battlefront 2's PC port into a warzone for Geth, Alliance Troops, Collectors, and more. It's still being semi-actively worked on with more factions and maps on the way. To download, just stop by the mod's ModDB page.

\n

That said, don't let this list be your only time with Star Wars mods. I was torn between so many other choices out there that you should totally explore. The Battlefront modding community has a staggering amount of content beyond the two mods mentioned, including some crazy levels for the original game that brought in Heroes mode and a few custom single-player levels that outdo anything Pandemic themselves created.

\n

The Jedi Knight community has its own lengthy archive of mods, reskins, and multiple lightsaber combat upgrades to intensify the strategy and skill to dueling. There's even been an effort to remake the original Dark Forces game in the new engine. And there's the Movie Duels mod that remakes scenes from the core trilogy.

\n

There are some other Star Wars games like Empire at War, X-Wing Alliance, and Galactic Battlegrounds with their own great mods and communities as well, with far too many notable choices to pick from. All you gotta do is take a look, and you'll have plenty of great fan-made Star Wars gaming to enjoy until the next major AAA release. If there are any projects I missed that you loved, please be sure to let me know in the comments below!

Halo Star Wars -- Halo: Custom Edition Mod

\n

Halo: Custom Edition fans who also like Star Wars are also in for a treat with Halo Star Wars, a full conversion map set in space. Two Star Destroyers host the ground battle in their interiors whilst players battle with X-Wings, Tie Fighters, and a fully explorable and pilotable Millennium Falcon. There's even an R2 unit available as a vehicle to fly around in, and several weapons from the Galactic Civil War era.

\n

While definitely one of the odder mods, it is notable because of just how much effort had to be made to make Star Wars work within the Halo: Combat Evolved engine. As a series inspired more by Aliens than Dash Gordon, pulling off a successfully homage is quite impressive.

The Sith Lords: Restored Content Modification -- Knights of the Old Republic 2 Mod

\n

I don't think any other mod on this list has had as troubled and manic a development cycle as Restored Content. You see, Knights of the Old Republic 2 was forced out by Lucas Arts way before it was supposed to. Originally, Obsidian had much grander plans, but they had to release a game that was only three fifths finished (at best) and with an entire planet and more cut.

\n

However, several mod teams over time have managed to not only restore the planet, but a vast majority of the game's ending. For the first time, players can see Knights of the Old Republic 2 as it was intended, not as it released. While the core game itself is not drastically changed, it offers a great deal more closure and clarity on the events that transpired. The mod is so thorough and well executed that it even won an award from ModDB.

\n

You can download the mod and experience Obsidian's pathos filled epic properly, right here.

The Battle of Yavin -- Fan Game

\n

The Battle of Yavin, one of two fan games by Bruno R. Marcos, is a rare treat. It's a simple arcade flight sim, but offers the chance to see if you can destroy the Deathstar. As the Rebel reinforcements deplete rapidly, you eventually become the lone pilot, and it can be a nerve-wracking, yet rewarding experience. It's like a mix of X-Wing and Contra.

\n

You can download the game from Game Jolt. For those who complete it or prefer Return of the Jedi, Marcos' second Star Wars fan game is the same core gameplay but during the Battle of Endor.

Star Wars: First Strike -- Battlefield 2142 Mod

\n

Arguably one of the longest living fan multiplayer mods, First Strike takes DICE's Battlefield 2142 and turns it into galactic warfare. Unlike a lot of mods and fan projects, the developers have passed version 1.6 and are only stopping to participate in a new fan project (which you should also keep an eye on), Star Wars: Battlecry. They've supported their community and have hosted several special campaign events for players to fight for supremacy.

\n

The game may not look the prettiest, but it contains a vast amount of content for players. There's single-player, co-op, and multiplayer modes, along with a full progression system and both space and ground combat maps. Really, if you have a copy of Battlefield 2142 lying around, you owe it to yourself to at least try this once.

\n

If any of that piques your interest, be sure to grab the mod's latest installer here.

The Force Unleashed II: Evolution -- The Force Unleashed II Mod

\n

The Force Unleashed II is a criminally short game, and that's a pity since the gameplay is genuinely solid. Now though, with the lower price and one man having finally cracked how to mod the game, there's incentive to snatch it up on PC.

\n

With numerous new challenges, weapon stances, and assets from the cut PC version of the Endor DLC campaign, you can finally get something far closer to the experience the game should have offered. You can snag SWTFU II Evolution mod in it's Alpha form here.

\n

But of course, no new and improved Force Unleashed experienced would be complete without all the character skins from the last game, plus new ones, and multiple weapons to choose from. You can also find a mod that unlocks them on ModDB.

The Brotherhood of Solomon: Solomon's Revenge -- Knights of the Old Republic Mod

\n

One of the truly greatest Star Wars mods, The Brotherhood of Solomon: Solomon's Revenge. This mod is practically a fully-fledged expansion pack for Knights of the Old Republic. You get new companions, new enemies, new worlds to explore, and more -- all with multiple voice actors bringing life to the story when other mods would just have subtitles. It's a massive project and one of the most ambitious ones out there.

\n

Did I mention it also perfectly integrates into the main storyline, taking place after your first confrontation with Malak? The original Knights of the Old Republic already featured a rather lengthy campaign, but for fans wanting more in their next run, nothing really beats Solomon's Revenge.

Dark Times II: Rising Son -- Star Wars: Battlefront 2 Mod

\n

What is this madness? Starkiller from The Force Unleashed in Star Wars: Battlefront 2? A full new single-player campaign with a branching trail and numerous new units to unlock along the way? Multiplayer support for the new maps and units as well? Tons of rebalancing, including brand new classes and abilities? Why it's none other than the Dark Times II: Rising Son mod.

\n

Yes, it genuinely has a main campaign (played in the game's Conquest mode) with branching side objectives. It also does its best to bring the Dark Times era to Star Wars: Battlefront II, stretching the combat and mechanics to the brink. New powers from The Force Unleashed also make the jump despite the game being technically an entire generation older. Just bear in mind that to compensate for this, the game's AI and combat is also much less forgiving. Consider it a warm up for the battles ahead.

\n

You can grab this one on here.

Star Wars: Conquest -- Mount & Blade Mod

\n

Speaking of a galaxy far, far away --  did you know there's a mod called Star Wars: Conquest? It takes Mount & Blade and converts the entire historical setting into a Star Wars sandbox the likes of which Lucas Arts never provided. You can become a Jedi, a Rebel, an Imperial, a droid, and whatever else pleases you. All the core gameplay of Mount & Blade remains, along with blaster combat and vehicles.

\n

Arguably, the combat is still very Mount & Blade (love it or hate it), but the attention to detail is sound. Also, nothing beats defeating Grand Moff Tarkin with a massive army of Jawas, while charging on a speeder bike as a droid Jedi. Here's a link to the game's ModDB page.

Star Wars Mod: Galactic Warfare -- Call of Duty 4 Mod

\n

A long time ago in the Call of Duty that started the trend of modern military shooters there's a mod that converts the online experience into a full Star Wars battleground. The mod converts the traditional Call of Duty 4 gameplay into a Star Wars experience, including maps on Bespin and Tatooine. A few additional maps and content updates have actually been released since version 1.0, and there are two servers to connect to if you're looking for players:

\n

213.133.110.38:27000 -- Africa
208.167.250.217:28960 -- USA

\n

Galactic Warfare has what every reflex shooter Star Wars fan wants. You can grab it and start shooting all those scruffy looking nerf herders on ModDB.

Disappointed we'll never get that open-world version of Star Wars 1313? Can't wait for DICE's Star Wars: Battlefront? Well here's a list of mods and fan games for all Star Wars gaming fans out there with a PC, and an eagerness to try some fellow fans' creations.
