Tom Holland Says Uncharted Movie Will Have Success Where Others Have Failed

It seems like the Uncharted movie might finally be on track. After countless delays and six directors, Tom Holland — young Nathan Drake — says he’s seen the script and thinks it’s one of the best he’s read.

The quote from Holland comes from an IGN video interview. He also mentioned he believes the Uncharted movie has the chance to succeed where other video game adaptations have failed and failed hard. Why? Because “…it’s an origin story to the games.”

The Uncharted movie isn’t trying to re-tell the Uncharted games in film form. Instead, it’s a completely separate story that anyone can enjoy, whether they’re familiar with the games or don’t even know who Nathan Drake is.

So far, even with the recent delay, Ruben Fleischer of Venom and Zombieland remains the (sixth) Uncharted movie director. It’s planned for a March 2021 release date now, pushing back some of Sony’s other projects in the process.

Still, Holland’s comment about the movie’s focus and purpose are a nice fit for Sony’s own video game adaptation philosophy. When the entertainment giant first announced PlayStation Productions, it said the goal was creating experiences consumers couldn’t find in the games — which is exactly what the Uncharted movie is doing.

Ideally, the next time we hear about the film, it’ll be in the form of a trailer or some other promotional material and not another delay. Whatever comes our way, stay tuned to GameSkinny for more Uncharted movie news as it (hopefully) develops.
