There are several different ways to unlock characters in the new Super Smash Bros. For 3DS. Characters are unlocked though completing specific modes under a certain criteria or playing a particular number of Smash Mode matches. The easiest by far is playing the required number of Smash Mode matches to unlock a character.

There is no requirement as to how the matches are played, just that they are completed. If you want to do this quickly, you can change the game’s settings to play through matches more efficiently. When starting a solo smash mode match, change the rules to Stock, 1 life, damage ratio to 2.0x, and dropping AI level to 1. This will ensure that matches will be quick as each one should only last a few seconds.

Please note that the difficulty of the CPU and damage multiplier will change when you have to face the character that is to be unlocked.

As for how many matches that are needed to unlock each character, you can check this handy list below.

  • Ness – play 10 matches
  • Falco – play 20 matches
  • Wario – Play 30 matches
  • Lucina – Play 40 matches
  • Dark Pit – Play 50 matches
  • Dr. Mario – Play 60 matches
  • R.O.B. – Play 70 matches
  • Ganondorf – Play 80 matches
  • Mr. Game & Watch – Play 90 matches
  • Bowser Jr. – Play 100 matches
  • Duck Hunt – Play 110 matches
  • Jigglypuff – Play 120 matches

There you have it, by following this quick little guide you should be able to unlock every character in just a few sittings. It may be tedious, but well worth it to try out the new unlockable characters such as Bowser Jr. and the Duck Hunt dog.
