Game and Work Out at the Same Time

Founders of RedOctane aim to help gamers lead a healthier life and potentially make exercise more exciting.

Sometimes it’s difficult to get motivated to work out, especially if you’re in the midst of an important quest in Guild Wars 2 or on a roll in your newly purchased Steam sale games. RedOctane founders Kai and Charles Huang and OpenLink founder Coleman Fung are taking steps toward the interactive fitness realm by launching Blue Goji Corp.

RedOctane, former developer of the hugely popular Guitar Hero, was eventually absorbed into Activision and closed in 2010. RedOctane founders know all about engagement via the success of Guitar Hero and have high hopes about combining fitness and gaming. They’re “developing a platform to support a variety of entertainment content” that targets people of all fitness levels and creates compelling interactive activity; say, something like an MMO.

By linking software through Coleman Fung’s experiences and knowledge, Blue Goji Corp. will be able to use various gym equipment such as treadmills, ellipticals, or spinning bikes to help people track their progress and results, as well as interact with others for a social, or even competitive aspect. It’s still unknown what sort of gaming experience you’ll receive, but it could potentially snare more gamers prone to a primarily sedentary existence.
