The Last of Us Review; Not a Fan

The game had great mechanics but was just to slow for a post apocalypse style games.

I’m writing this review after having played about half of The Last of Us, and am prepared for the verbal barrage I may receive from this review. Simply put, I wasn’t a fan of the game. Already I have many friends on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ that have called me a complete loon because I don’t love “this masterpiece.”

Let me just say that I love apocalypse-style games. I have played both Fallout 3 and New Vegas until the disc won’t load properly anymore. The same rings true for most apocalypse or zombie style games. However The Last of Us wasn’t one of those games.

I felt like the game was far to slow for me. As well as being very controlling in that you have a set path and you can’t really deviate from that path. Personally I was hoping for a more open world game. For me that is the only way apocalypse style games work.

But I’ll give the game credit where credit is due. It had a pretty good AI. Your companions actually fight, hide, and are generally aware of the environment and respond accordingly. The voice acting was good, and the models actually move their mouths in a semi-realistic motion when talking.

It also had great music and sound work which made it feel real. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t playing the game in suspense a few times as I heard the clickers roaming and was out of shivs.

Fortunately I got this as a rental through Redbox for free and didn’t have to pay $4 for the two days I had this game. Now before anyone rips me a new one let me say that the game has its good points, as I said earlier, but it simply wasn’t for me. To all the people who do like this game, more power to you and I hope you enjoy the game.
