Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away is getting a makeover and it looks a little...blocky.
Since 2011, animator and Minecrafter Alan Becker has been re-creating the world of Miyazaki’s Spirited Away brick by brick in Minecraft. What started off as a build of the film’s infamous bath house eventually grew to include other landmarks such as the clock tower, the ghost town, Zeniba’s cottage and the railroad. Becker says he’s currently about 85% done and aims to complete the entire world.
"My goal is to get as close as possible to feeling like you're in the movie," Becker said on the project’s Planet Minecraft page. "To do this, everything is recreated in 1 to 1 scale by cross referencing 416 movie screenshots, as well as watching the movie repeatedly. I also created a custom texture pack, using my artistic abilities to change each block to play a specific role in emulating the backgrounds of the movie."
While this isn’t the first time Miyazaki’s work has been interpreted in Minecraft, Becker’s attention to detail sets this animated world apart from the others. From the types of flowers growing in the garden to how the lanterns glow in the ghost town, Becker has considered every aspect of his creation in order to make it as accurate as possible.
