Pier Solar HD: The Genesis RPG Classic Gets New Life
UPDATE: For the record, this is a mistake. The game in question was a homebrew game made in 2004, so let's clarify that. I KNEW I couldn't have missed this one! ;)
As a lifelong fan of role-playing games, I can't believe I missed this one.
There was this game called Pier Solar, which released for the Sega Genesis in 1993. It was exactly the type of RPG adventure I would've adored and yet, I must've been asleep the day it hit store shelves. Either that, or I was once again absorbed in a new Final Fantasy. I feel bad that I missed it, but I'll get another chance!
Developer WaterMelon is resurrecting the classic title with glorious high-definition, as you can see by this trailer. The result of a successful Kickstarter campaign, Pier Solar HD is coming to all major platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC, Mac, Linux, Ouya, and Android. They're also talking about maybe bringing it to the Nintendo 3DS. In other words, no matter what type of gamer you are, you'll have access to this bad boy. They're even producing a Dreamcast edition!
The rise of classic turn-based continues
This is just another example of designers listening to veteran gamers. Child of Light is another turn-based game on the horizon (developed by a small but dedicated team at Ubisoft), and there are numerous examples of turn-based goodness on portables and handhelds. We may never again see a big-budget game with a turn-based mechanic but that's okay. So long as it doesn't die out completely.
