I tried Wizardry Online when it first entered closed beta. As a long time fan of the Wizardry series, I was excited to see how it would transition to the MMORPG format. It does it decently, but the game is definitely not for everyone. The controls are clunky and the dungeons are unforgiving — even so, fans of the series can find something to enjoy in the dungeon crawling aspect of the game. It just doesn’t seem to have that spark that other more traditional Wizardry games do, so even among fans it’s destined to be an extremely niche game.

Community Manager Piestro posted on the forums, announcing the launch delay and stating the company’s reason for doing so:

The Wizardry Online team has been relentlessly working around the clock to create and deliver this re-imagined MMORPG in a way that captures and stays true to the franchise’s hardcore trademark features. As we head into final preparations for launching the game, we have decided to move the launch date of Wizardry Online to January 30, 2013 in order to allow us extra time to ensure we’re delivering the most epic gameplay experience possible to our players.

Piestro posts further in the thread, revealing that SOE also intends to release the game on Steam — and points to it as being another reason for the delay.

It’s good to see Sony Online Entertainment getting active with the community and keeping them updated on what’s going on. Wizardry Online might not be my favorite beta from 2012 (TERA and RaiderZ took the top beta spots for me), but the game definitely has some promise and is a pretty unique experience in comparison to its standard MMO competition.
