Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Links was back at New York Comic Con this year showing off the newest 5D's World which just released at the end of September.

I was lucky enough to chat with the Senior Producer Kenichi Kataoka to discuss future plans for the game.

Yu-Gi-Oh fans have been looking for the game to add a draft mode. Kataoka responded to that by saying that it has been brought up before and the team is currently brainstorming ideas on how they can bring it to Duel Links.

Yu-Gi-Oh is known for having an incredible story arch whether it is in the manga or the anime, but Duel Links does not have a narrative arc in the game. According to Kataoka, that might be changing soon. In 2019, they will be releasing a new story narrative based in the 5D's world that was released in September.

You have been able to find Duel Links on iOS and Android devices but recently it was added to your computers through Steam. The community has grown by 50% since its launch on the platform, but don't get excited about being able to use mods or hack the game to get a better deck. Cheating means a quick ban, as it should.

You can play Yu-Gi-Oh: Duel Links and its newest 5D's update on iOS, Android and Steam. I would like to thank Kenichi Kataoka for taking the time to speak with me.

If you were at NYCC, did you stop by the Yu-Gi-Oh booth and play the trading card game or play Duel Links on those giant monitors? If you did, let us know in the comments and how you did!

A Beginner's Guide to Grim Soul: Dark Fantasy Adventure https://www.gameskinny.com/22nqc/a-beginners-guide-to-grim-soul-dark-fantasy-adventure https://www.gameskinny.com/22nqc/a-beginners-guide-to-grim-soul-dark-fantasy-adventure Thu, 05 Jul 2018 11:56:38 -0400 Zack Palm

For fans of Dark Souls and survival games, Grim Soul: Dark Fantasy Adventure brings these two concepts together and introduces a difficult mobile game for you to try surviving in. Not only do you need wit to handle these harsh landscapes, but you will have to manage your inventory and base in order to succeed.

This game does not come with a tutorial and the developers expect you to figure out several details on your own. Many of them you naturally learn as you level up throughout the game and find new resources, but some of them may allude your notice for quite some time. In this guide you'll read about several helpful tips to keep yourself alive and acquire the best loot possible.

Increase Your Attack Speed

This is a simple technique you can use during any engagement you find yourself in. Each time your character moves forward to do an attack, briefly pull away from your opponent. Your character will pull away, but as soon as they do return to combat as quickly as you can and continue attacking them. To successfully increase your attack speed you need to do this after each complete hit.

Doing this increases the frequency of your character's attack by a small amount. While it's not a lot, it does give you an advantage against the tougher foes you're going to encounter and it can provide you with a better chance of beating NPC player characters who randomly spawn in on your map.

Avoid The Night Guest With Red Symbols

The unkillable Night Guest prowls the map during the night time. The creature is terrified of only thing -- fire. The best thing for you to do is to always have a torch sitting in your inventory when you're out looting the world at night. Though, you can still survive encounters with him if you're fast enough. And no, you do not have to leave the map.

You need to find one of the larger red symbols drawn on the ground. The Night Guest cannot cross over this symbol. After a few minutes, the Night Guest should leave the map and bother you no more. Don't rely on this every time you loot at night, as they randomly show up on the maps.

Kite Slower Enemies

While exploring you may have run into one of the heavily armored Damned Knights. These slow moving creatures lumber around the map, lock on to you, and chase you until you've left the area. Because they hit extremely hard, you may have thought it better to run away as soon as they show up. But you can use their slow movement to your advantage. To do this you need to craft a Cart Thill and have it equipped.

When one of these terrors show up, run away from them and locate a tree somewhere on the map. When the Damned Knight arrives to the tree they're going to attempt to bypass it to get to you. You need to avoid the enemy's heavy attack by running your character around the tree.

Every so often have your character attack the Damned Knigh. As soon as you land the hit, continue running around the tree. Because of the creature's slow movement, they won't have a chance to hit you. You should eventually kill them after you've done this several times.

You can only do this with the Cart Thill. Other weapons do not have the same reach. You can also use this technique on Damned Templars.

Locating Night Caches

As you start to find yourself vying to acquire higher level loot, you may traverse the areas with three skulls. These locations are filled with plenty of foes and bags for you to loot containing great items. However, the best time to visit these locations is at night. When night falls, you have the opportunity for a night cache to appear.

These rare night caches contain some of the best loot in the game, except for the ones you can take from the Forsaken Dungeon. They spawn in the middle of the map, meaning you have to wade through many of the enemies to get to it. You can likely leave a few on the outskirts but it's better to get them all as the night cache takes three times longer to open than a chest does.

Due to how many foes spawn on this map, you need to bring multiple weapons. Several of them may break.

Also, because they only show up at night you need to bring a torch with you whenever you're hunting for these. You risk having the Night Guest visit you and you do not want to bet all of the loot you gathered on there being red symbols for you to hide in.

The Gatekeeper

One of the events you can have pop up on your map is the Dead Body event. There's plenty of strong foes wandering around at this location, so make sure to bring weapons and armor with you.

An item you can loot off of the dead body is the Gatekeeper's Hut Map. This will take you to the game's first boss character, the Gatekeeper. He moves just as slow Damned Knights and Templars, but you cannot kite him. He simply destroys the small objects in his way. If you defeat him you can loot plenty of great items from inside of his hut, plus a key to the Forsaken Order dungeon granting you access to the forbidden area.

Note: You can only have the Gatekeeper's Hut Map drop at level 15.

Though the Gatekeeper looks fearsome you can defeat him using a few simple tactics.

Equipment

Just like the other slower moving foes wandering this map you need to use his movement speed against him. Because you can't kite him, one of the weapons you need to take with you is the halberd. You can acquire this item by looting it from one of the stronger player zones located on your map, or from a night cache.

The two other weapons should consist of a Bastard Sword or a FalchionYou don't use these weapons against the Gatekeeper, they come in handy later during your fight. Make sure to bring along plenty of healing items.

Fighting The Gatekeeper

Unlike Dark Souls, the Gatekeeper does not change up his tactics during the fight. All he does is chase after you attempt to attack you. This is where you use you equip your halberd and use the technique you learned early -- successfully land an attack against the Gatekeeper, and the run away. Because he's slower than the Damned Knights and Templars, if you run away he can't attack you.

During this fight, Plague Wolves will show up to help the Gatekeeper to kill you. When they show up, peel away from the Gatekeeper, swap to one of your swords, and kill the wolves. You do not want to waste the durability of your halberd against them. Only use it on the Gatekeeper.

The wolves will show up throughout your fight and they will damage you. After you've defeated them, use this time to heal up, and then reengage the Gatekeeper with your halberd.

Looting the Gatekeeper's Hut

After you defeated the Gatekeeper and his wolves, you can loot his hut. Unfortunately, you're going to treat it like a player's hut and you need use a bomb on the front door. You can leave the area to return to your base to grab one, and then return to claim your prize.

This is recommended as there you can loot several items from this location upon defeating the Gatekeeper.

These great tips should help you conquer a lot of the harder concepts going on in Grim Soul: Dark Fantasy Adventure.

Out There: Ω Edition

Download from Google Play Store

\n

Out There is certainly among the most challenging of survival games available on mobile. It's a morbid, melancholic science fiction featuring beautiful, comic-like graphics and a variety of storylines with different endings. You play as an astronaut literally lost in space in your ship, thawed from a state of sleep in cryonics.

The protagonist will make serious, life-altering decisions and can survive on oxygen by absorbing it from "garden" planets. Your character also meets cold-hearted alien lifeforms you can't combat, and you unravel their destiny throughout the adventure.

This War of Mine

Instead of playing as a seasoned soldier, you're forced into a war-stricken, impoverished city with a group of civilians in This War of Mine. The refreshing perspective is both moving and a fascinating angle for a survival game. With a severe lack of resources, sacrifices will have to be made at your own measures.

\n

During the day, the main objective is to make sure you don't get sniped to death, thus staying in the refuge and maintaining your shelter and its inhabitants. During the night, one of your characters can forage for items to help the group survive more efficiently.

With dark, beautiful graphics and a historical undertone, this game is one of careful reasoning and tactics. Every emotionally devastating decision and sacrifice you make will have a long-term impact on the outcome of your survivors.

Game Dev Tycoon Coming to Android this January https://www.gameskinny.com/3gwxr/game-dev-tycoon-coming-to-android-this-january https://www.gameskinny.com/3gwxr/game-dev-tycoon-coming-to-android-this-january Tue, 23 Jan 2018 14:08:31 -0500 Highties

Greenheart Games recently announced that Game Dev Tycoon will be coming to Android phones on January 31. This mobile edition will offer a UI overhaul tailored for mobile phones, a new challenge mode inspired by their piracy experiment, and a content update that will be coming to mobile and Steam versions. Some of the things you can do in this game will include:

  • Starting a game studio in the late '80s
  • Creating games and mixing different genres
  • Hiring a development team and thriving as a team
  • Opening an R&D lab
  • Challenging pirate mode

Game Dev Tycoon has gained a massive following for several reasons. It was the first simulation game to hit the Windows Store. Much of the fanbase of this game developed due to the success of Steam sales and YouTubers promoting it. Another factor helping this game stick out out was the developer's anti-piracy experiment; in a fate of irony, when players would use a pirated copy of the game, they would become bankrupt themselves in game as a consequence. The image below is an example from Greenheart Games on how pirated copies were affected.

.

Due to the success of the experiment and sales, they have been able to bring Game Dev Tycoon over to mobile and make massive changes and add more content.

Are you excited about this mobile port? if so leave a comment down below. Stay tuned to GameSkinny for all your news and information related to Game Dev Tycoon.

Uta No Prince-sama Shining Live

Developed by KLAB, the people behind the widely popular Bleach Brave Souls, Uta no Prince-sama Shining Live is a mobile rhythm game based on the widely popular anime series, Uta no Prince-sama.

Similar to Love Live School Idol Festival, the game lets you collect character cards and play songs based on the anime. The game also features the anime’s idol units, STARFISH and Quartet Night, along with their songs. Despite being a rhythm game, Shining Live boasts a deep story mode with characters rendered in the Live2d animation system.

Battle Cats

Japan is not kitten around when it comes to games about cats. Battle Cats is definitely one of the more outlandish -- and fun-- mobile games.

Developed by PONOS, Battle Cats is a tower defense game that’s free-to-play on both Android and iOS. In the game, you command an army of weirdly cute cats and wreak havoc on the world by battling various monsters. Moyashibito DX
\n

You know it's a weird Japanese game when the entire premise of the game is for you to harvest bean sprouts with weird faces. Everything from old men moyashi that have a desire to someday become artists, to moyashi that have pompadours, because why not, to moyashi that are also part bonsai tree, which confuses me more than moyashi growing hair for some reason.

\n

Moyashibito DX (which stands for Delicious Xtacy) is the sequel to the surprisingly popular Moyashibito - Fun Game For Free, that was developed by Goodroid,Inc. The game basically has you harvesting different kinds of bean sprouts (over 50 kinds apparently). While also tasking you with watering the moyashi to help them grow.

\n

Moyashibito DX's gameplay is a simple yet super-addictive loop of watering the bean sprouts and pulling them out when they've grown. It's sweet and simple while also being weird and somewhat unsettling.

MewMew Tower
\n

In Japan, games with cats aren't just a thing, they're practically their own genre. Okay, maybe that's a smidge dramatic, but while there are a number of weird cat games out there, MewMew Tower stands out thanks to its absurd premise.

\n

In MewMew Tower, all you have to do is just stack your cats. That’s it! The simple nature of the gameplay is what makes it uniquely addictive. Trying to stack one cat after another, each with their own unique shapes and sizes, can get pretty exciting. The higher you get, the harder it becomes to balance your tower of cats, which could end up in a cat-tastrophe (I will not apologize!).

\n

The game is available for both Android and iOS but only the iOS version is available internationally. Although it’s not fully translated, the game's simple nature makes this less of a problem than it'd be for other games.

Battle Champs (Little Noah)
\n

Right off the bat, we have Japan's take on the popular Clash of Clans style game with Battle Champs (or Little Noah as it's known in Japan). Developed by BlazeGames, Battle Champs stands out among the slew of real-time strategy games with its clever infusion of JRPG elements.

\n

Fans of Japanese RPG games will surely be attracted to the art design as it's headed by Akihiko Yoshida, the man behind big JRPGs such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Bravely Default. With a perfect blend of recognizable yet refreshingly unique art, Battle Champs' character designs are absolutely adorable. The main protagonist, Nia, is a particular standout due to her mad scientist outfit.

\n

Of course, the gameplay is equally as good. You can expect to spend hours building and battling monsters while you unlock new job classes and build up your army of champs.

Some roguelikes have a difficult learning curve, while others are easy to learn but hard to master. Those seen on this list all have their similarities and differences, but are all roguelike games at their core.

\n

While playing these games on other devices would probably prove to be beneficial, having these games available on mobile devices gives players an alternative option to their console counterparts. No matter which one mobile gamers are most interested in, hopefully, they'll be able to provide an enjoyable experience.

Ananias

\n

Platforms: Android & iOS
Price: $4.99

\n

Ananias is a game that released in February and was developed by Slashware S.A.S.

\n

In Ananias, players explore five different worlds and engage in turn-based combat by choosing one of eight different player classes -- with four "Legendary" classes added in the Fellowship Edition. Each class has been designed with their own playing style, with some being more combat oriented and others using magic spells from four separate types of magic. As players progress, they will encounter various monsters that can be recruited by using certain spells.

\n

In the story of Ananias, an evil serpent named Kramora has been released from the underworld. The last hope to defeat it is a hidden magic ring that holds the power of the ancient king, Ananias, which the player will be searching for as long as they can survive the dangers that await them.

\n

The art style of Ananias isn't quite exactly pixel art, but is similar to certain computer games of the late 80's, such as Drakkhen.

\n

Ananias is a great choice for any mobile gamer or roguelike fan who wants a good nostalgia kick from the computer games of the past.

Sproggiwood

\n

Platforms: Android & iOS
Price: $4.99

\n

Developed by Freehold Games and released in 2014, Sproggiwood breaks the roguelike genre down to its core parts: six different unlockable customizable character classes -- Farmer, Warrior, Archer, Thief, Wizard, and Vampire -- plenty of items and weapons to collect, and procedurally generate dungeons with monsters and traps that combine to provide distinct tactical challenges. Each dungeon dive follows the heroic rise of one adventurer from your civilization. Journey through teeming forests, haunted swamps, teetering cliffs, and glacial mazes to uncover your civilization's whole story. *A wondrous and humorous setting inspired by Finnish mythology

\n

Each dungeon dive follows the heroic rise of one adventurer from your civilization. Journey through teeming forests, haunted swamps, teetering cliffs, and glacial mazes to uncover your civilization's whole story.

\n

In Sproggiwood, players start out as a simple farmer from an island known as Clog. The player character is then led through a strange portal by a talking sheep. The character then becomes a prisoner of Sproggi, and the rest is history from there.

\n

The art style of Sproggiwood is much unique when compared to many other roguelikes, which helps it stand out amongst the rest. It's hard to explain without use of the word "adorable," but just play the game and you'll see what I mean.

\n

Sproggiwood is a charming and humorous roguelike that should be recommended to any mobile gamers interested in the genre.

Tallowmere

\n

Platforms: Android & iOS
Price: $0.99

\n

Tallowmere was developed by Chris Mcfarland and released in 2015. It is unique in that it's one of the few sidescrolling roguelikes available on mobile devices.

\n

In Tallowmere, one of the player's most important weapons is his or her shield, which they can raise to block enemy attacks or lower to strike foes when the timing is right. The player will also collect weapons, outfits, headgear, and more powerful shields as they search for the key to the next room. As with most Souls inspired games, souls from defeated enemies allow the player to increase their character's stats and abilities.

\n

The player will also collect weapons, outfits, headgear, and more powerful shields as they search for the key to the next room. As with most Souls inspired games, souls from defeated enemies allow the player to increase their character's stats and abilities.

\n

Tallowmere's art style is unique: characters are drawn in a pixelated format, while backgrounds and set pieces are rendered in a three-dimensional style, which helps make it easier to distinguish enemies and items.

\n

Tallowmere would be a great game for any Souls series fans who want to try playing a roguelike on their mobile device. The story of Tallowmere is minimal, but one of survival. How far can you make it through Lady Tallowmere's dungeons?

Wayward Souls

\n

Platforms: Android & iOS
Price: $6.99

\n

In Wayward Souls, players choose one of six different characters -- Warrior, Mage, Rogue, Adventurer, Spellsword, and Cultist -- who all have their own unique playstyles, abilities, and equipment. Each character can also find equipment that will change or enhance their playstyles. On top of that, players will journey through 13 different area types, each with a variety of different enemies, traps, and rare encounters, which can kill them and steal all their items if they're not careful.

\n

The bosses and overarching story of Wayward Souls are the same for all six characters. The tower featured in the game has been cursed after its residents stumbled across evil magical relics. But as the overall story is the same for each character, each of the six characters has their own separate story as well. These are unveiled through text interludes between sections and scripted encounters.

\n

The art style is inspired by games like Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger and adds a bit of charm to this otherwise standard roguelike. Wayward Souls would be a good pick for any mobile gamer who enjoys Super Nintendo-era RPG graphics and a variety of different gameplay styles.

Crypt of the NecroDancer Pocket Edition

\n

Platforms: iOS
Price: $4.99

\n

Crypt of the NecroDancer -- a game developed by Brace Yourself Games and released in 2016 -- is perhaps the most unique game on this list. In it, players move their character to music -- either with the game's original soundtrack or their own iTunes library.

\n

Unlike traditional roguelikes, the player can only move or attack when they execute an action to the beat of the music. As with most rhythm games, each successful movement boosts a coin-scoring multiplier. If the player fails to match the beat, they will not be directly harmed in most situations, but the scoring multiplier will be reset and the character may be harmed by a nearby monster if they are in their attack path. When (or if) the character's health meter depletes, the game ends.

\n

In addition to various temporary items that are lost upon player death, there are permanent character ability enhancements that can be purchased in the game's lobby.

\n

Crypt of the NecroDancer also has quite a story, which adds to the game's replay value, and due to its ability to play and utilize music from the players iTunes library, it's addicting gameplay, and it's Super Nintendo RPG isometric graphics, players should have a ton of fun jamming to this game.

Pixel Dungeon

\n

Platforms: Android & iOS
Price: Free

\n

In this 2015 game developed by Watabou, players explore the eponymous area as one of four classes -- Warrior, Mage, Rogue, and Huntress, -- to collect various items and fight formidable foes while hoping to find the Amulet of Yendor. As with most roguelikes, permadeath is a key feature in this game, and when players die, they lose all of the items gained from their past run.

\n

Pixel Dungeon has a bit of a story, mostly provided through text summaries given before each stage, which range from dungeons and caves to even a dwarven metropolis. But overall, the story elements in this roguelike are light.

\n

The art style of Pixel Dungeon is generic pixel art -- which doesn't make it stand out much -- but players should be having such an enjoyable time with the gameplay that the art style will be nothing but an afterthought.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

\n

Platforms: iOS
Price: $14.99

\n

From the creator of Super Meat Boy comes the Legend of Zelda- inspired nightmare fuel known as The Binding of Isaac. An RPG shooter roguelike with some truly grotesque imagery and controversial anti-religious themes, The Binding of Isaac is a great game overall.

In The Binding of Isaac, the player takes the role of the titular character as he journeys through various dungeons and faces the horrors that await him. Certain items can change Isaac’s form and give him powerful abilities, while most items gained will be lost once the player is killed.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is an enhanced remake with a new game engine, all-new hand-drawn pixel style artwork, an all-new soundtrack, and plenty of revamped enhancements. Offering more 500 hours of gameplay, this game would be hard for any mobile gamer to put down.

Roguelikes are growing in popularity. From games like Enter the Gungeon to recent sidescrollers like Flinthook, the number of roguelike games releasing each year is seemingly infinite. Predicated on journeying through procedurally generated levels that predominantly showcase tile-based graphics, Roguelikes have carved a niche for themselves, especially with players that take permadeath seriously.

\n

There are a handful of roguelikes on each console, but most seem to start on the PC before moving over. Once these games gain good enough reception, they're typically ported to consoles or mobile devices.

\n

And although your Android or iPhone may not be the best device on which to play roguelikes, there are tons of great games that exploit those devices' best features. So if you're a heavy mobile gamer and would like to take a chance at playing some truly punishing roguelike games, here are 7 great entries you can choose from right now.

Mobile games may not be the best category of video games, but it's easy to see that the quality of mobile games are getting better as more enjoyable and better quality mobile games are being released more often.

\n

If companies continued this trend, as well as making barriers for entry a bit stronger, than mobile gaming could see a rise in the number of players who prefer to play video games on their mobile devices.

Pokémon GO (Updated)

\n
Android and iOS
\n

Pokémon GO may have released last year, but it just had a big update this year with some new features.

\n

Other than a few tweaks to the games already present system, such as improving how hatching eggs work and balancing how difficult certain Pokémon are to catch, the most important new feature, is that now Pocket Monsters introduced in the second generation of games (Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions), are now available to find and capture.

\n

Pokémon GO may have seemed like a short fad, but the monster catching mobile game is still being written about often and plenty of people are continuing their Pokémon catching adventures. According to Forbes, as of April 5th, Pokémon GO  has about 65 million monthly active players.

\n

Even though players may not be as active as they are in other games, it's still impressive how many people keep coming back to catch Pokémon.

\n

Kingdom Hearts Union X (Cross)

\n
Android and iOS
\n

Kingdom Hearts Union X is the long awaited multiplayer update/sequel to Kingdom Hearts Unchained x.

\n

Union X continues the story from Unchained x, part of which was turned in a cinematic for Kingdom Hearts 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue, and will be important to the story of Kingdom Hearts 3.

\n

All gameplay from Unchained x is still present, and save data will be transferred over, while  new players can still make their own avatars and choose their faction.  Battles are also still the same, continuing the use a card selecting mechanic with special medals representing different Disney characters.

\n

The main new feature Union X  introduces is a multiplayer option. Players are now able to join with up to five members of their party and take on quests and battle Raid Bosses.

\n

Union X is the second game in the Kingdom Hearts franchise to feature a multiplayer option, the first of which was 2009's Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days for the Nintendo DS, and the first to feature online multiplayer.

\n

This may be a sign Kingdom Hearts 3 may have a multiplayer option as well, but for now this is what fans will have to play to tide themselves over.

Power Rangers Legacy Wars

\n
Android and iOS
\n

This mobile fighting game was released alongside the brand new movie, and unlike movie tie-in games of the past, it's actually decent.

\n

Power Rangers: Legacy Wars is a fighting game where you can play as almost any ranger or main villain from the franchises 23 year history. You only start with three characters, but as you progress through the game, you can unlock more characters by buying them with in-game currency or completing certain challenges.

\n

Not only is it a surprisingly fun mobile fighting game as well as a treat for any Power Rangers fan, but it has also managed to be the best Power Rangers game released this year. The previously released, Power Rangers Mega Battle, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One got less than stellar reviews and ironically looks more like a mobile game than Legacy Wars.

\n

Hopefully we'll get to see a console version of Power Rangers: Legacy Wars, or at least something similar, soon enough.

\n

Get it on Google Play or the App Store.

Fire Emblem Heroes

\n
Android and iOS
\n

Nintendo's  most recent mobile spin-off game is based on one of their currently most popular franchises. In Fire Emblem Heroes, players can make a team of up to four different characters to fight against enemies in  the single player mode or to battle other players in PVP mode.

\n

The in-game currency in Fire Emblem Heroes can be spent to obtain new characters, be used to fully heal and revive all of the player's units, or to give an experience boost or gain stamina.

\n

Fire Emblem Heroes also introduces three brand new characters available as soon as players begin the game, with plenty of other characters available to unlock.  A handful of other characters have been added since release as well, and even more may be on the way in the near future.

\n

With more main series Fire Emblem games on the way, Fire Emblem Heroes is sure to see plenty more updates in the future.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links

\n
Android and iOS
\n

Duel Links has all voice actors of the original series returning to reprise their roles. A feature even the most recent console Yu-Gi-Oh! game, Yu-Gi-Oh! Legacy of the Duelist -- which follows the story of each Yu-Gi-Oh! series-- doesn't have.

\n

The duels in Duel Links are designed to be quicker, having a few differences from the actual card game by ommiting or changing certain rules or cards. Making duels faster also makes them a bit more difficult, since you may have less time to stall your opponent if you're in a tight spot

\n

Each character has different skills attached to them, such as always having a field card activated, or  being able to start  off with a life point boost, with more skills unlocked as characters level up. There are also easily skipped CG animations when characters summon their signature monsters.

\n

Duel Links can only be played with an online connection, but would be better if it also had an offline mode.

Video games released for mobile devices typically get a bad rep. The mobile market is filled to the brim with barely functioning ports, sub-par spin-off games, pay-to-win traps that try to steal your money, and other cardinal sins of gaming. But the low barrier to entry for mobile keeps allowing more and more terrible games to hit digital storefronts in Google Play and the App Store.

\n

In recent years, we have seen a rise in enjoyable mobile games -- especially with companies like Bethesda and Nintendo taking a chance with the mobile game market. Even so, there still doesn't seem to be that many quality mobile games quite yet. Or at least, not enough to outweigh all the bad ones that still burden the market.

\n

But so far, 2017 has actually been a promising year for mobile games, and we've seen some very well made titles released in the last few months. Here are five of this year's best games, which are available to download right now.

How to Find the Lazy River in Club Penguin Island https://www.gameskinny.com/ca44t/how-to-find-the-lazy-river-in-club-penguin-island https://www.gameskinny.com/ca44t/how-to-find-the-lazy-river-in-club-penguin-island Sun, 16 Apr 2017 13:54:50 -0400 Paige McGovern

After Club Penguin’s shutdown on March 29, all penguins set sail for Club Penguin Island -- Disney’s mobile-only adaption that launched worldwide the same day. On April 7, the official Twitter thanked the over one million fans who signed up on the Android and iOS app.

But one of the important new features of Club Penguin Island are its Daily Challenges, which consist of assigned player activities that must be completed daily. Some of these challenges are for a single penguin, but others require the whole community to pitch in.

The lazy river is a part of four daily challenges:

  • Whoa Cocoa (Single player) -- Penguins must drink hot cocoa while tubing down the lazy river.
  • Cocoa-rific! (Community) -- 1,000 penguins must drink hot cocoa while tubing down the lazy river.
  • Want a Pizza Me? (Single player) -- Penguins must eat a slice of pizza while tubing down the lazy river.
  • Anchovy Overload (Community) -- 1,000 penguins must eat slices of pizza while tubing down the lazy river.

But where can a penguin find this lazy river to complete challenges?

It’s easy! It’s right in Coconut Cove. But floating down it in one’s tube is the real challenge.

First, make sure you have the Club Penguin Island mobile app installed. If you don’t, you can download it for your iOS or Android device. Next, make sure you have registered for an account and created your penguin.

Once you've got that all set up, starting from Beacon Boardwalk, waddle right until you reach Coconut Cove. On the far-left side of the cove, you should see a trail of shells on the sand, leading up to a wooden dock. Follow this trail. Once on the dock, move forward to the edge and jump up and across the rocks to reach the top of the waterfall. These are tricky jumps, so it may take a few tries.

Once you have successfully climbed to the top, open your inventory, find your tube, and press the action button to wear it. The default tube in Club Penguin Island is the Island Tube, but there's been several other designs implemented with the 1.2.0 update:

  • Funky Feather (unlocked at level 2)
  • Cake Cruiser (level 5)
  • Firebreather (level 7)
  • Gravitube (level 9)
  • UGGA TUBE (level 13)
  • Lifesaver (level 15)
  • Xpedition (only obtained from the "Icy Infiltration" adventure)

(Above screenshot from Club Penguin Island Island Help.)

Once your tube of choice is equipped, jump off the waterfall to be carried down the lazy river’s gentle stream. The light blue arrows in the water indicate which way the river is flowing. Remember to have hot cocoa or pizza ready if you want to complete one of the solo challenges. When your relaxing journey has ended, simply press the action button again to stow your tube.

Unfortunately, the Daily Challenges and tubes are only available for paying members. If you don’t have a Club Penguin Island membership, you can get one now for $4.99 a month. The first seven days are free. If you’re not willing to pay -- or your membership trial has expired -- you can still locate the lazy river and follow it, but you won’t be pushed along in a tube.

Stay tuned to GameSkinny for the latest Club Penguin Island tips and tricks.

There you have it: three great upcoming JRPGs for Android mobile devices that are slated to release sometime this year. JRPGs, at least the ones that are normally on consoles, are not quite as common as other genres on mobile platforms, but despite that fact, a decent number of them are still released or ported to mobile devices every year.

It's possible that we'll see more JRPG releases and ports as mobile devices get more powerful, but for now, those who play JRPGs on their phone will have to be satisfied with their current and upcoming options.

\n

If you want to learn about three JRPGs already available on Android devices you can take a look at this article 3 JRPGs already available on Android devices.

Alchemia Story

\n

Alchemia Story was developed by Asobimo, and takes place in a world where alchemy is everywhere, literally.

\n

In Alchemia Story, you create your own character, fight against enemies in turn based combat, and perform special team attacks, just to name of few of its highly engagin mechanics.

\n

What makes Alchemia Story unique is that you can join another players' battles via a real-time assisting system. Players can see one another battling an enemy while on the overworld map and jump in to help at any time. It's truly multiplayer in almost every sense.

God Eater Online

\n

God Eater Online is a mobile spin-off game of the PlayStation exclusive hunting action series of the same name.

\n

Like other games in the series, in God Eater Online, you create a character who helps the Fenrir Organization, a group whose job it is to exterminate Aragami, frightening creatures that appeared suddenly in the game's world and have destroyed most of the world prior to the setting of the first game.

\n

What's particularly interesting about God Eater Online is that it's still in the main God Eater canon and takes place a few years after the most recently released title, God Eater 2: Rage Burst.

Tokyo Ghoul: Dark War

\n

Based on the popular Tokyo Ghoul anime and manga series, Tokyo Ghoul: Dark War is centered around the ongoing conflict between ghouls, human like beings who feed on human flesh, and the CCG, an organization that hunts down ghouls to protect humans.

\n

Whichever side the player chooses will determine the way the story plays out as they fight against a plethora of human or ghoul opponents.

\n

Tokyo Ghoul: Dark War will feature a PVP mode, as well as a MOBA-inspired team multiplayer mode.

7 Hilarious Mobile Games That Will Make You Laugh Out Loud https://www.gameskinny.com/u968w/7-hilarious-mobile-games-that-will-make-you-laugh-out-loud https://www.gameskinny.com/u968w/7-hilarious-mobile-games-that-will-make-you-laugh-out-loud Mon, 03 Apr 2017 08:00:01 -0400 Nick Lee

If you're ever on the go and don't mind mobile gaming, take the time to download these hilarious but also fun games to take a midday break every now and then. Most of these games are pretty time consuming, however, so don't say I didn't warn you.

Call of Doodie - Run to the Office Toilet in Time

Call of Doodie, toilet

Call of Duty fans will note the similarities and blatant differences for this game from the name along. Call of Doodie allows players to control stereotypical office place employees as they get the awkward urge to get to the bathroom.

The game also adds in bonus doors that may or may not be the bathroom you desire, but no spoilers on that one. After playing this game I can attest that going to the bathroom has never given me such anxiety while I also try to explain what I'm playing on my phone (which is a bonus game really)!

Available on: iOS / Google Play

The Battle Cats

battle cats, cats

If you like cats but always felt there was an element of war and fatality missing from their daily activities, have we got the game for you. As weird as the game may seem, it's actually quite simple as you choose which cat you wish to send into battle and you even get to fire a cat cannon! Frequent updates continue to add to the game so be sure to keep playing; can't say this is PETA approved however.

Available on: iOS / Android

The Simpsons: Tapped Out

the simpsons, tapped out

If you can imagine The Sims meets actively satirizing the game format of The Sims, you've got this game. Created by the minds of The Simpsons TV show, Tapped Out comments on the absurdity of the game and even calls out EA a few times.

My favorite quotes are from Homer who will regularly say things like "Work?! I thought this was a video game" and "Aw, I wish this was a shooter." Throughout the game as iconic characters and locations seen on the show are unlocked, more comedy ensues as you level up.

Available on: iOS / Android

Llama or Duck?!

llama or duck, quiz

The game, as simple as it may sound, provides near endless entertainment as you ponder simple questions with even more simple pictures provided. Hold no shame in answering this free quiz game as you click through. Just remember, however that there is no more to this game than what the title says so don't fool yourself into thinking there might be.

As I played this I started to question, is there something more in this picture of a llama that might make it resemble a duck? Or perhaps I needed to think about ducks on a metaphysical level, in which there are no wrong answers, to truly get this game. Either way I will never admit how much time was spent playing this.

Available on: iOS / Android

KleptoCats

This game is both simple and rewarding, and involves mischievous cats so what's not to love? Be advised feline owners, stray away from letting your pets get any ideas from this one. You're the owner of an apartment or home in which you go from owning items and cats. The cats don't seem to enjoy you owning the former however and take it upon themselves to mess things up. The game combines both cute and funny elements as there are plenty of cats willing to rob you blind.

Available on: iOS / Android

Clumsy Ninja

clumsy ninja, ninja

While fun, this game is no joke when it comes to difficulty as it can match the best of mobile games. You take the role of a mentor or parental figure who watches as your little ninja becomes a real warrior. The game offers challenges that keeps you involved in a mix of the cute and the funny.

Available On: iOS / Android

Dumb Ways to Scare

Dumb Ways to Scare, dumb ways to, dumb, scary, scare

Following after the lighthearted tone but often dark implications of Dumb Ways to Die, this game takes you into a monster's perspective to scare people. Can't say if he'll ever be satisfied, but how could you when life's a scream? The game keeps you entertained by the absurdity of just trying to scare people in the most home-video type of way to just down right evil deeds.

Available on: iOS

These seven games span the spectrum of satire to just plain slapstick in their comedic material as they provide something for each type of mobile gamer. What's more important than a quick laugh however is each games ability to provide varying levels of interactivity. For example, The Simpsons: Tapped Out provides linear, story based, game play while Call of Doodie can be opened quickly and played with no long term effects. Granted playing that last game could have long term effects on your office to bathroom use ratio that we don't have the analytics on yet.

Are there any games we missed? Let us know in the comments below!

Pokemon Go Water Festival Event Has Started https://www.gameskinny.com/ig23e/pokemon-go-water-festival-event-has-started https://www.gameskinny.com/ig23e/pokemon-go-water-festival-event-has-started Thu, 23 Mar 2017 05:58:14 -0400 tofuslayer

Niantic Labs announced that starting March 22nd at 1 pm PDT, Pokémon Go is celebrating a global Water Festival by giving trainers an opportunity to catch more Water-type Pokémon.

According to an update on the Pokémon Go website, trainers anywhere in the world are more likely to encounter Magikarp, Squirtle, Totodile, as well as their Evolutions. If you already have all of those Pokémon and their evolutions, there’s still more. If you explore areas where Water-type Pokémon typically dwell, you’ll have a better chance of encountering Water-type Pokémon that were originally discovered in the Johto region. The update also hinted that trainers may be more likely to encounter Lapras in these areas.

In addition, trainers will be able to access a new avatar wardrobe item, the Magikarp Hat, later today.

For trainers interested in capitalizing on these limited-time festivities, the Pokémon Go Water Festival celebration ends on March 29, 2017 at 1 pm PDT.

4 Above and Beyond Android Co-op Games. https://www.gameskinny.com/hkhvk/4-above-and-beyond-android-co-op-games https://www.gameskinny.com/hkhvk/4-above-and-beyond-android-co-op-games Mon, 20 Feb 2017 12:00:02 -0500 Will Dowell

Social games are prevalent in the mobile market. May it be playing Words with Friends or encouraging others to play Candy Crush, mobile games tend to have a large social element. This has lead to social media gaming transferring to the mobile sphere with the likes of Zynga actively pursuing this market.

But what about traditional co-op? While somewhat uncommon in the console and PC gaming spheres, it is especially uncommon in mobile gaming. Luckily, there are 4 incredible Android co-op games just hanging around for your enjoyment.

Dungeon Hunter 4

While not one the most original Diablo clones out there, Dungeon Hunter 4 still provides an engaging multiplayer loot-fest. Take part in loot filled arenas designed to test the skills of all party members. Use different classes to further your team's success. It is likely one of the most popular co-op experiences on mobile today.

Sadly, the co-op experience is less substantial than previous entries, and also suffers from having the monetization get in the way of the actual gameplay. It reinforces the stereotype that all mobile games are just an avenue for micro transactions. Yet even with these massive blemishes, the co-op experience is still worth your time.

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

While not your typical co-op game, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes combines asymmetrical co-op with VR to create an exciting game. One player is trapped with a ticking bomb while the other players must instruct the player how to defuse it. With only one player able to see and interact with the bomb, communication is key to success. Enjoy a unique challenge by creating multiple roles requiring different tasks.

The major barrier to entry is the VR requirement. This limits the player to those who have the VR technology to play. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is also a higher price than most mobile games, which could turn away users looking for a free co-op experience. Even with these barriers to entry, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is an incredible game for anyone with VR technology.

Minecraft Pocket Edition

Minecraft is one of the best co-op experiences ever, and Pocket Edition is no exception. While not as robust as the PC version, Minecraft Pocket Edition allows you to create on the go, and have a blast with both local and online multiplayer servers. Players can have a blast with the fun multiplayer that has made Minecraft the juggernaut that it is.

Again, it is not as complex as the PC release and does not have the extensive mod support that makes Minecraft so interesting. That doesn't matter, as the game itself is so polished, that any fan of online co-op should at least give Minecraft Pocket Edition a shot.

TeamThunder

For fans of simulations, TeamThunder provides a mobile attack helicopter simulator that substantially improves with a partner. Become either the pilot or the gunner, and work with your partner to complete a series of challenging missions. The controls themselves are highly customizable, even having tilt controls if you choose to want them. The overall challenge of TeamThunder actively encourages cooperation.

Mobile games can provide new experiences and change how co-op games can be played. With the mobility and unique interfaces Android devices contain, games can create interesting experiences unavailable on other platforms. As more developers consider Android as a serious mobile platform, co-op games will move forward as a genre.

What co-op games do you like on Android? Let us know in the comments!

Mobile Game Chezz Actually Makes Chess Really Interesting https://www.gameskinny.com/v0wo5/mobile-game-chezz-actually-makes-chess-really-interesting https://www.gameskinny.com/v0wo5/mobile-game-chezz-actually-makes-chess-really-interesting Sat, 28 Jan 2017 10:00:01 -0500 Bryant Pereira

A new way to play an old classic is now available on mobile app stores. Chezz adds a fresh twist to the centuries-old Chess formula. There are already dozens of Chess-related apps on the mobile market, but developers QuickByte Games changed the formula just enough to make themselves stand out and better appeal to the gamers in the market.

The first thing anyone playing Chezz will notice is the modification of a major Chess rule -- turns. There are no turns in Chezz. That’s right, none. Each player is free to move any of their pieces at any time without waiting for their opponent to make a move. This opens new opportunities for players to quickly move pieces out of a square as they are about to get taken by an opposing piece. This also opens the chance for pieces to intercept others during their movement phases.

Now, this may sound like absolute madness (and it is) but as they say -- there’s method in the madness. Although there are no counted turns in Chezz, each individual piece is set by its own limitations. Not including the regular movement rules, each piece has a cooldown of a few seconds before it can move again. You can also upgrade each piece's speed or cooldown by leveling up.

In addition to the speed increase, the game offers a few extra variants to spice things up. Traps like fire pits or holes will limit piece movement, lest someone loses their piece. The board is set up differently nearly every time you play, too. From the conventional Chess set up to setting the board up diagonally with half the pieces, each game of Chezz will be different from the last.

The single player adventure mode is set up in a similar fashion to other mobile games like Candy Crush. There’s a ladder of levels you can play through that challenge you in different ways. Each level rewards you with experience points and pawns that you can use to level up and play online. The game even has boss fights and different game modes like King Protect, a survival mode where you have a set time to keep your King piece alive.

The game isn't without flaws, however. Chezz is a relatively new game on the market, and with that comes a number of bugs. Online matches can be laggy, game pieces don't always register, and there are some long ads that play between matches.

---

Growing up in a home with very few family members, I didn’t have many opportunities to get into classic board games, like Chess. As someone who grew up glued to my Nintendos, the thought of playing something manual was beyond my millennial thought process. Chezz takes everything great about tabletop Chess and gears it toward gamers. It does an excellent job at teaching players the basic rules of Chess, while also rewarding players in the same ways video games do.

The elimination of turns makes Chezz more of a strategy tactics video game than it does a reemerging of a classic board game. Matches can be finished in under a minute, which means I'll be playing a lot more matches than I ever played of regular Chess. Its rules would never work with physical pieces, but in a digital environment, Chezz adds a whole new definition to the classic board game.

Play Lost Order Wherever, Though Probably Not on Handhelds https://www.gameskinny.com/6ueeh/play-lost-order-wherever-though-probably-not-on-handhelds https://www.gameskinny.com/6ueeh/play-lost-order-wherever-though-probably-not-on-handhelds Sat, 07 Jan 2017 06:54:53 -0500 Danny21_2396

It has been a year since Cygames announced Lost Order (as Project Re:Link), their real-time tactics game, and not much has been heard about the game since.

We do know that the game is developed by Platinum Games and helmed by people who have worked on many Final Fantasy titles in the past. Names like Yasumi Matsuno and Akihiko Yoshida, both are famous for Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII. There's also Yoshiki Kashitani, who was the lead game designer for Final Fantasy XIII-2 as well as being main programmer for Final Fantasy XIII and Dirge of Cerberus, and Daisuke Sakata who was the sound designer for Bayonetta.

Speaking to Famitsu magazine, the developers said that the game, which is planned to be released on iPhone and Android, is about 70% complete and they will have some information to share at the beginning of 2017. Unfortunately, they didn't mention when they will update us exactly, nor did they mention the game's release date. But, they said that they aim to make Lost Order go beyond the limitations of smartphone apps in terms of quality, with its rich 3D graphics and enhanced contents such as team composition, equipments, and other strategic elements.

Lost Order takes place in the “Perished Capital of Gold Heaven,” a hierarchical city created for colonization purposes in a new continent. Not much can be shared about the story other than it will revolve around the social disparity issue rooted in the city. It is said that there will also be a “Legend of the Thirteen Soaring Jet Black Knights” that will play a key part in the game’s storyline.

The game is labeled as a “real-time tactics” game where players will have to make strategic choices for automatic battles in a vast field. It has not been confirmed whether the game will have a multiplayer mode, either local or online. There has also been no confirmation if we will see the game on home or handheld consoles. But, stay tuned on GameSkinny for the updates on Lost Order.

5 Best Android Games from 2016 https://www.gameskinny.com/0laf7/5-best-android-games-from-2016 https://www.gameskinny.com/0laf7/5-best-android-games-from-2016 Mon, 26 Dec 2016 05:00:01 -0500 Janette Ceballos

There’s been so many great games released this year for consoles, phones and computers. Since the holidays are coming around, a new phone might be a great gift to give (or get), and what better way to use such a gift than to play fun games. For Android phones, here are a few choice selections sure to please any gamer, whether it’s because they are easy to learn, they're addictive, or they're just a great time.

Rolling Sky

To start off, we have a game that’s great for all ages. All you have to do is drag the ball on the screen left and right to avoid obstacles. It’s a simple concept, especially for mobile games, but it’s intense, quick and addicting. Nice visuals, simple controls and innovative levels bring interesting obstacles to play, always keeping you on your toes. Overall, this is a nice and challenging time-waster.

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

This one’s a little different. It’s a card game that requires strategic planning, creating a bit of a challenge for players in deciding what decks give them the best chance of winning. You can play against the computer or check out the Arena mode, where you fight against other players for a greater competitive challenge, if that’s more your style.

In addition to being big, the game already has a released expansion, Mean Streets of Gadetzan, which offers new cards and battle opportunities to make this card game even more irresistibly addicting.

Pocket Mortys

Fun humor, weird premise. If you’re a fan of the show, this will be a blast. Basically, it’s like Pokemon: catch, train and combine over 70 types of Mortys and battle against other Ricks for glory and prizes. You can craft items to help you in battles like healing serums.

Just remember that it is an Adult Swim game, so it might not be suitable if you don’t like the humor of the show. Nevertheless, it’s a weird, creative battle game that provides loads of fun.

Pokémon GO

Of course, if Pocket Mortys is too weird, but you still want to catch virtual things you can make fight each other, Pokemon GO is another good option. This monster-catching app was incredibly popular when it first released and, while it’s not as loud as it once was, the game is still incredibly enjoyable.

You can catch and level up your pokémon to fight, take over and defend gyms, which are located in real-world locations. It’s a good game when you are out for a short while or if you are a fan of the franchise.

Atsume Neko: Kitty Collector

The final game for our list is the incredibly laid back cat collector you can just check in on from time to time. Place food and toys to attract a wide range of friendly felines, each with their own personalities and mementos.

The fun of the game is in the surprise of what little kitties will visit your yard. There’s also a bit of a technical challenge in trying to collect the rarer cats and collect mementos from them. Its simple, cute graphics make this a nice game to relax with.

There you have it, five of the top-rated games available for Android.

What are some of your favorite mobile games of the year? What do you think will top the charts next year? Be sure to let us know!

So there you have it, five games to hold you over for Super Mario Run. Many of us are anxiously awaiting Run's release, but as we've shown here, there are some real quality mobile games of the same vein to hold us over until the mustached plumber decides to give us Android users a chance.

\n

Are there any other games similar to Super Mario Run that are worth playing? What about any other mobile game that's come out lately in general? Let us know!

Rayman Adventures

\n
Developer: Ubisoft
\n

Aah, Rayman. Ubisoft's disjointed, French answer to Mario... and a great one at that. Why isn't Rayman more well known to the public? A question for another time. Next on this list is Rayman Adventures

\n

Rayman really is, in its most basic form, very similar to Mario, and as such, his mobile game Rayman Adventures works as a great way to hold over til the release of Super Mario Run. Rayman Adventures has players running around in a game very similar to Rayman Legends, so fans of the series pretty much know exactly what they're getting into.

\n

This game actually has tons of levels and things to do. A feature that many Rayman games have been known for as of late is being filled to the brim with content and this Android game is no exception.

ReRunners: Race For the World

\n
Developer: Game Alliance
\n

ReRunners may look quite familiar, as it seems to take a note from Speedrunners. Both games have a similar concept in racing others in a 2D side-scrolling race. There are a few differences including one big one: ReRunners is available on Android.

\n

The game also doesn't rely on laps like Speedrunners, but instead has longer, one-direction maps to race on. It has skills to unlock as well, giving a sense of progression beyond just getting better at the controls, which are also said to be tight, especially for a mobile game.

Alto’s Adventure

\n
Noodlecake Studios Inc.
\n

Alto's Adventure is a gorgeous runner (or rather, skier) that tells a bit more of a story other than "Go real fast to the end of the level". That being said, there isn't really a story per se, but more of a set dressing to fill in what's left unsaid.

\n

The music is very reminiscent of Superbrothers Sword and Sworceryand even though the visuals are different in aesthetic, the way they help paint what Alto's Adventure really is is extremely satisfying, making it more than just a game and more of an experience.

\n

Alto's Adventure is available on Android through Google Play.

Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom

\n
Developer: Sega
\n

Okay, yes. More times than not, Sonic games are garbage. There's no denying that. But when it comes to a mobile running game... the two first franchises that come to mind when looking mainstream is Sonic and Mario, and we already know what game inspired this list.

\n

Cue Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom. Sonic Boom was awful. But it also tried too hard to be something it wasn't... and there were glitches. Lots and lots of glitches. But Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom takes the original Sonic Dash, a game of the same concept, and applies the new Sonic Boom aesthetic to the game, which is arguably the only good part about Sonic Boom.

\n

But what this game does is channel what made Sonic good in the first place: running. And not much else. No stopping to swipe a sword, no Werewolf transformations, no slow-paced exploration, just running. Each character has their own unique moves that help with the running, but it all has the same goal: To run.

\n

Some gamers think mobile gaming isn't "hardcore" (although we at Game Skinny think otherwise) but many would also say that the problem with the modern sonic franchise it that they try too hard to innovate on things nobody asked for. For Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom: you take classic Sonic, you put it on Google Play, change the perspective from the side to behind, then you just go. It's a little more nuanced than that, but ultimately, they just focus on what Sonic does best.

Just run Sonic. Run!

Wind-up Knight 2

\n
Developer: Robot Invader
\n

Wind-up Knight 2 features a little clockwork knight that is controlled by being wound up. He runs toward his destination in hopes that he isn't hit on the way there or runs out of juice.

\n

To rewind Wind-up Knight's time gauge, players can collect more wind-up keys to keep him going. He's also able to jump, swing his sword and block with his shield to cleverly get around enemies that would otherwise kill him in one hit. There are also other items available in certain levels for boosts and the game plays with perspective by using background-foreground travel. The Knight is also customizable, making this Android game pretty replayable.

Super Mario Run has already released on iOS and all the Apple users get to enjoy the running and jumping that comes with it. But Android users are stuck with a "Coming in 2017" announcement. So we put together a list of five games to hold you over until Super Mario Run releases for Android.

\n

Considering that Super Mario Run is one part auto-runner and one part platformer (with a ton of other features in between), this list will include both types of games -- which are all free to play!

\n

And in case you're wondering, this is how fan reaction to Super Mario Run has been so far.

2017 has a surprising amount of hype for its mobile gaming department. Our list of most anticipated Android mobile games turned out to be bigger than we thought as more and more developers realize how to make mobile games -- or translate old classics to one of gaming's youngest, yet most promising mediums.

\n

Super Mario Run

\n

Honestly, who didn't see this coming? Not Super Mario Run itself -- that was a total surprise. But once it was announced, how could it not make it on this list? Super Mario Run will feature typical Mario levels where instead of playing them normally, Mario will run on his own and the player must time his jumps, attacks and tricks accordingly.

\n

In classic Nintendo fashion, they're making use of a different control scheme and creating something new out of it. There will also be a time trial mode where the player races another player's past performance on a track.

\n

Nintendo will undoubtedly cram tons of features into this game, as they never release one-trick ponies, but the details are still under wraps. While this list wasn't in any specific order, this game is definitely high on many gamer's wish lists -- if not the top of our most anticipated Android mobile games of 2017.

Durango

\n

An original mobile game, Durango is an isometric survival building game. It takes place on an island filled with dinosaurs and present day people stranded there. Their only hope is to collect supplies, build tribes and make the best of their surroundings.

\n

Durango is planned to be an open-world survival game with multiplayer elements from Nexon Korea, the team behind Maple Story. Although this game seems to be nothing like Maple Story, and more like How to Survive, the mixing of multiplayer and single player elements from Nexon Korea seems promising for this 2017 Android release.

King's Knight: Wrath of the Dark Dragon

\n

Before Final Fantasy took the stage in the JRPG genre, Square made an arguably fun, arguably terrible game called King's Knight. It was a fun game, sure. Going through levels, shooting at blocks, revealing secrets, gathering points, beating bosses...

\n

But the game failed to adequately tell you how to beat it. If you lost one character, you were allowed to continue, but you could not beat the game. This took a clever idea and stomped it into the mud. That is, until 30 years later in 2017, where a remake/reimagining takes place!

\n

King's Knight Wrath of the Dark Dragon returns with similar gameplay as the original, but with a huge upgrade to graphics. It even adds a huge roster of characters.

The game never quite begged for a remake in the traditional video game sense, but it fits perfectly in the Android market with its bite-sized levels, item gathering and leveling up.

Oceanhorn

\n

This game is another title originally slated for 2016 being pushed into the next year. Oceanhorn is a Zelda-like action-adventure game that takes settings and ideas from Wind Waker but changes perspective to the isometric POVs of classic top-down Zelda titles.

\n

A sequel, Oceanhorn 2: Knights of the Lost Realm has recently been announced, but a mobile version of the original could boost sales, as Oceanhorn was a bit of a sleeper hit, despite featuring music from Kenji Ito and Nobuo Uematsu. Expect to see this on iOS and Android in 2017.

Skullgirls Mobile

\n

What's Skullgirls, you ask? Skullgirls is a 3-on-3 fighting game from Reverge Labs that pits cute girls in a battle royale. The series has been praised for its animation and controls, and it was actually heavily based on the Marvel Vs Capcom series in regards to its tag team combat system, assists and hyper counters.

\n

Being quite successful in the fighting game market, Reverge Labs announced Skullgirls Mobile, which puts a twist on the fighting game's mechanics. To match the limitations of twitch mechanics on an Android and iOS device, the game focuses more on RPG elements like equipping your favorite Skullgirl with new equipment and moves. Don't worry though, the game still seems fast-paced and exciting.

Torchlight Mobile

\n

The Torchlight series has been a big hit with gamers around the world. Torchlight Mobile is set to be a faithful adaptation of the series on Android and iOS. Each character has six skills, but they can be customized to create many more than that.

\n

Torchlight Mobile will include a PvP mode and even a MOBA mini-game that doesn't detract from the game as a whole. Torchlight Mobile could really be successful on Android with its touch-to-move/attack controls, and if the dungeons are cut up into bite-sized pieces, this game could really sing.

The video presentation of the game shows the art style is very accurate to the existing iterations in  the series and the action seems to fit right in with what Torchlight fans are used to.

Sheltered

\n

Another game coming from another platform, Sheltered started life as a PC game. In it, the player assumes the role of a family of four. They must survive in a bunker after an apocalyptic event. This involves crafting, decision making and scavenging for supplies.

\n

The entire game takes a 2D perspective and is controlled mostly by a mouse, making the translation to Android touch controls relatively easy to comprehend. No release date has been promised, but the developers have said on multiple occasions, including their Kickstarter page, that they want to bring the game to Android and iOS in 2017.

Sdorica - Sunset

\n

Not much is known about Sdorica - Sunset except that it's from Rayark Inc., the creators of Implosion: Never Lose Hope, and it is set for an Android and iOS release. It was set for a late 2016 release, but with 2016 nearing an end and no update on the release, it can only be assumed this will be pushed into next year.

\n

Sdorica is a 2D fantasy game with beautiful artwork similar to Odin Sphere. The lack of details and a month of silence from their social media team is a little concerning. However, the success of Implosion should give some hope, although the new art style is a huge departure.

Armello

\n

In September 2015, Armello released on PC, and later on Playstation 4 and Xbox One. After receiving additional support from government funding in Australia and meeting its Kickstarter stretch goals, the game was also planned to release on Android and iOS.

\n

Armello is basically a board game. Unlike many board games however, it initially existed as only a video game with a board aesthetic.

The premise follows a dying king and characters aiming to take his place as ruler of the animal kingdom. The player chooses one of these anthropomorphic heroes and sets out to take the throne. The art-style alone is enough to sell the game, but those who enjoy board games would feel right at home with Armello. Speaking of art style...

Duelyst

Duelyst is currently on PC, Mac, Playstation 4 and Xbox One. It started as a Kickstarter project come to life and focuses on short play sessions. Clocking in at around ten minutes, each turn-based tactical battle is meant to be bite sized and pick-up-and-play.

As a Tactical RPG that also plays like a deck-building game, Duelyst lends itself pretty perfectly to the Android market. There's also a practice mode, Challenge puzzle modes and a tournament mode.

1. Be Active and Keep Up!

\n

There is a good reason why this is my number one tip. This game receives new content and updates on a monthly basis. New monsters, dungeons, mechanics, rewards, and more are always being added to this game.

\n

If you don't keep up with the updates, or don't pay attention, then you will be left behind, and really struggle to keep up. Don't let this happen to you!

\n

Thankfully, there are a good amount of sites that you can use to learn more about the game, keep up with the updates, and expose yourself to the community, and all the content this game has to offer.

\n
    \n
  • Facebook Page. This is where you'll find all the latest announcements like updates, in-game events, new releases (evolution and monster cards), and lots more.
  • \n
  • PADX. A website that is managed by fans (way better than the wiki). Here, you'll find all the details about specific dungeons, monsters, updates (as well as a sneak peek of future updates since Japan gets everything first).
  • \n
  • Forums. Pretty obvious why this is on the list, chatting is a good way to find new and better strategies.
  • \n
  • Mantasticpad. I'll put it this way. The man is a genius. He has incredibly good guides, analysis of key mechanics, suggestions for teams, etc. I highly recommend that you check out his blog!
  • \n
\n

Hopefully, these tips will be useful enough for beginners to grasp some of the key aspects of Puzzle & Dragons. If you want more help, or want a guide on something more specific, let me know in the comments below!

2. Friends and Pal Points

\n

Having friends in Puzzle & Dragons is very important. Without friends, you'll have a hard time clearing dungeons -- you don't have to know them in reality.

\n

Before you enter a dungeon, you'll be required to select a friend helper. A friend helper will be acting as your sixth monster card on your team.

\n

If you don't have any friends, don't despair! You'll see the word "user" next to another player. After you successfully clear a dungeon, you'll have the option of sending that user a friend request. If they accept, you become friends! And same thing might happen to you. If you get a friend request, that means someone used your monster to clear a dungeon. So, accept it!

\n

Whenever you use a friend helper, you'll receive Pal Points. Pal Points can be used to roll the Pal Egg Machine. Every few days, the Pal Egg Machine changes its content. Sometimes, it'll be evolution material monsters. Sometimes, it'll be enhance material monsters, but you can always get pal points no matter what.

\n

PRO TIP: Try to find friends who use the same leader skill monster as you. That way, the abilities that the leader skills give will be doubled for maximum effect!

3. The Gacha and Godfests

\n

So, you kept reading this word, "gacha." But you were probably asking yourself, "what...?" Gacha is a fancy, or to be more specific, a Japanese term for Rare Egg Machine (or REM for short). It costs five stones per pull, but what do you get? Well... you can get anything from this gacha because it's random. The good news is that you won't waste five stones and get something that you can get as a common dungeon drop. The bad news is that if you want something in particular, you may or may not get it. It's pure RNG.

\n

\n

The image above, is a Godfest (God Festivals). Godfests are in-game events that are held every few weeks. They increase the chance of a specific pantheon (Norse Gods, Greek Gods, Japanese Gods, Egyptian Gods, etc.) by three, meaning that monsters from that particular pantheon are three times more likely to appear for you. You can try and roll for a God outside of a Godfest, but that is not recommended at all!

\n

Also, Godfests have the chance of giving you a Godfest exclusive monster card. Those are very desired, extremely rare, and incredibly useful monster cards that you can only get during a Godfest. Some examples are: KannaTsubakiSherias Roots.

\n

PRO TIP: Never roll outside of a Godfest! Always roll during one!

4. Skill Transfer and Tans

\n

Some time ago, GungHo Online Entertainment (the developers of the game) introduced the magic of Skill Transfer. You can transfer a skill from one monster to a completely different monster. Extremely useful, right? But of course, there are a few catches...

\n
    \n
  • The monster whose skill is being transferred must be from the gacha, and must be rarity five or higher (rarity is displayed by the stars next to the monster's name).
  • \n
  • It must be max level (level 99) and be fully awoken (not counting Latent Awakenings).
  • \n
  • Once the skill is transferred, that monster cannot be put on the same team as the monster who received its skill.
  • \n
  • The number of turns of the monster who received the skill and the monster whose skill was transferred are combined. For example, monster A has its own skill that requires 10 turns. Monster B whose skill is getting transferred requires 11 turns. After the skill is transferred to A, it still retains its own skill (10 turns), but the new transferred skill from B becomes 21 turns.
  • \n
  • Sprites known as Tans are required to transfer a skill from one monster to another.
  • \n
\n

UPDATE: As of version 9.6, skill transfers are faster and easier than ever. Monsters whose skills are being transferred no longer need to be max level, Tans are no longer required, and the cost has been reduced to one million coins (used to be two million)!

5. Monster Points (MP)

\n

Monster Points (or MP) is a new currency, introduced to Puzzle & Dragons over a year ago. All monsters are now worth some MP. The rarer the monster, the more MP it's worth.

\n
    \n
  • Monsters that are very common, and that you can get in a dungeon as a regular drop, are worth 1 MP.
  • \n
  • Dungeon bosses are worth about 10, 15, or 20 MP (depending on the boss).
  • \n
  • Silver rarity monster cards from the gacha are worth 3,000 MP.
  • \n
  • Gold rarity monsters from the gacha can be worth 5,000 or 15,000 or 50,000 MP (depending on rarity as well).
  • \n
\n

What can MP get you? You can either purchase evolution material monsters (monsters needed to perform an evolution. Though, recommend you not do this, as they are pretty pricey, and you can get them once a week anyway).

\n

Latent TAMADRAS, Tans, and very good monster cards like Shiva DragonRa DragonXiang Mei, and much more can only be obtained in the MP Shop.

6. Team Composition, Synergy, and Leader Skills

\n

You cannot just put a bunch of monster cards on your team and expect to clear everything in the game. You will fail. That team will be absolutely awful!

\n

In the video above (though somewhat outdated), this is just a very basic example of team synergy. There are more teams that are better in terms of synergy and working with one another. It is fair however, to point out that some of the best teams with excellent synergy can only be obtained from the gacha.

\n

\n

In the photo above, that is one of my best teams (the sixth card is a friend helper and not one of my cards). The basic idea of this team is to match as many different color combos as possible. The more combos you make, the more damage you'll do. The Leader Skill of the first monster triggers that effect -- a Leader Skill is on the very first monster in your team; it's the only Skill that is always active.

\n

The active Leader Skill of my monster card converts all orbs on the current board into other element orbs. Very useful when you don't have enough to make a combo.

\n

The second monster's active skill reduces damage by 75% for two turns.

\n

The third card reduces enemy HP by 20%, and clears binds. When a monster is bound, it's unusable for a set number of turns. Think of it not being there at all.

\n

The fourth monster multiplies the attack of all God type and Dragon type monsters on the current team by two (all of them are at least one of those types).

\n

The fifth one reduces damage by 50% for three turns.

\n

The sixth card (the friend helper), is exactly the same as the first card (including the Leader Skill).

\n

In more simple terms, I can take less damage, reduce enemies HP, multiply my own attack, and deal colossal damage by matching all orb colors -- as you can see, all of my cards cover at least one of every orb element, except for heart orbs. Heart orbs simply heal you when you match three or more.

7. Skills and Skill-ups

\n

Each monster in the game has an Active Skill. An Active Skill can be used as many times as you want during battle. However, each has a cool-down, meaning once you use it, you must wait a certain amount of turns before using it again. It is however, possible to reduce the amount of turns needed to wait in order for the skill to recharge.

\n

Let's say that I have a monster card, whose Active Skill changes all fire orbs into dark orbs. The skill will only be usable after 10 turns, but I want to reduce that to the lowest possible for that specific monster card, let's say five -- each monster card has a different amount of turns that you need to wait. I can do so by feeding a copy of that monster to the initial monster. If successful, the total amount of turns will go down by one, meaning that I'll now have to wait nine turns -- five being the minimum. This is called a skill-up. I'll have to keep feeding the copy of that monster until it reaches five turns.

\n

However, there is a huge RNG factor in this. The chance of me getting that skill-up is only 10%. Sometimes during in-game events, the chances of a skill-up are increased to 25%, 30%, or 40%. But, more bad news, the rarer the monster, the more difficult it is to skill-up. Especially if it came from the gacha.

\n

Thankfully, sprites known as a Py (one is pictured above) will always guarantee a skill-up. So, it is wise to save them up and only use them on the rarest of the rare monsters. The color of the Py corresponds to what element it is, and which monster it can skill up 100%. Going back to the Py above, this one is a dark element, so it can only skill up dark element monsters. Same rule applies to other Pys of different elements. Needless to say, they are not easy to obtain...

\n

UPDATE: As of version 9.6, King Tans have made their debut. They too guarantee skill-ups.

\n

Check out THIS link for a more detailed guide.

8. TAMADRAS

\n

Cute? Yes. Adorable? Sure! Elusive? Definitely Yes! The little sprite above is an extremely useful monster card because it unlocks Awoken Skills on another monster card. But, what is an Awoken Skill?

\n

\n

In the example above, the three little icons in the red outline are Awakenings (or, Awoken Skills). They are basically hidden abilities, that can be unlocked with two methods.

\n

First, you must power up a monster that you want with the exact same copy of that monster. So, let's say I want to awaken one of Siren's abilities. I can do that by powering her up with the same exact card.

\n

The second method is "feeding" her a TAMADRA. Once fed, one awakening will be unlocked (they unlock in order, from top to bottom). The more awakenings a monster card has, the more TAMADRAS are needed. The maximum I've ever seen was nine.

\n

There are different types of awakenings. In the above image, they are:

\n
    \n
  • Dark Resist20% chance that you will not be affected by a blind attack, an attack that turns all of your orbs black. Moving orbs, reveals what they are, but having this awakening gives you a chance of resisting.
  • \n
  • Enhanced Heal - increases recovery by 50. Yes, it's stack-able with Plus Eggs.
  • \n
  • Auto-Recover - instantly heal for 500 points every time you clear at least one orb combo.
  • \n
\n

Finally, how do you even get TAMADRAS? Gifts from game developers from time to time, rewards for clearing certain dungeons, TAMADRA Village, or as very rare drops in Castle of Satan.

\n

There is also a variant of TAMADRAS called Latent TAMADRAS. Those can be purchased in the MP shop (Monster Point Shop) or farmed in PreDra Infestation and can be fed to any monster you wish. They share similar awakenings as normal awakenings, but are slightly weaker because they can be given to any monster. The maximum amount of Latent TAMADRAS given to a monster can be five (if more, the rightmost skill will be "moved" to the right, thus disappearing and clearing the way for a new Latent Awakening).

9. Plus Eggs

\n

In the image above, the little plus sign next to the striped egg signifies it's a Plus Egg. It gives bonus points to one of the three stats: Attack, HP, Recovery.

\n
    \n
  • For attack, it's +10 per point.
  • \n
  • For HP, +5 per point.
  • \n
  • And for recovery, it's +3 per point.
  • \n
\n

The more points the better. So for instance, if I get two points in attack, then it's a total of +20 (but only for attack).

\n

A total of 99 points for each stat can be administered to a monster card, making it a maximum of 297 points (99 x 3 since there are three stats), no higher. In the end, this serves as a boost to your monster cards, because it greatly increases their stats, making them have more health, deal more damage, and recover more health when they lose it.

\n

How to get them? Well... this is a lengthy process. You can get them as monster drops in dungeons, but only specific ones. And they only come with one extra point per stat, but there's never a guarantee that the drop will be a Plus Egg. Luckily, there are dungeons that always guarantee Plus Egg drops like, Star Treasure Thieves' Den and Ruins of the Star Vault.  From time to time, there are in-game events that increase the drop rate of Plus Eggs by 10 times in Special Dungeons.

10. Enhance Monsters

\n

All monsters need to be leveled up in order to evolve (some don't though). The process can be a bit tedious, especially when a monster is fully evolved, since its maximum level becomes 99.

\n

To speed up the process, there are sprites known as Enhance Material. They give a big exp boost to any monster (more if that monster is the same element as the Enhance Material).

\n

In the photo above, that is a King Gold Dragon. He will give a big boost to any element monster card, but even a larger boost (specifically, increase the exp by 1.5) to any monster that is light element, just like him! The same rule applies to other attributes.

\n

Dungeons with Enhance material monsters appear at random times during the day. How do you know when? When you get access to your ID, look at the third number. That number corresponds to your group:

\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Group3rd Number
A0,5
B1,6
C2,7
D3,8
E4,9
\n

Once you find out, use this website to find out your time slots (left chart).

\n

UPDATE: As of version 9.6, the Dragons are now permanently there: Dark on Mondays, Ruby on Tuesdays, Sapphire on Wednesdays, Emerald on Thursdays, and Gold on Fridays.

The commercial for Puzzle & Dragons only shows the basic idea of the game - move orbs around for a certain amount of time and try to get as many combos as possible. However, the commercial does not go into detail about other (and very important) aspects of the game, which as a result, might leave beginners clueless, or simply confused.

Kemco Games has released a new official trailer to coincide with the release of its new game, Dragon Sinker: Descendants of Legend, on Android.

The game takes pride in its retro inspiration. A vibrantly colorful 8-bit world is accompanied by chiptune music, and the game harks back to the nostalgic “golden age” of RPGs.

The player sets off on an epic quest to defeat the devilish dragon Wyrmvarg with the help of humans, elves, and dwarves -- all backed by a score composed by Square alumnus Ryuji Sasai.

The game promises a job system with more than 16 collectible jobs (with changing costumes) to provide a deep variety of customization and strategic possibilities.

With a cast of up to 12 party members spanning 3 races, there are plenty of team combinations and effects to try out in a combat system reminiscent of the early Final Fantasy games.

Dragon Sinker can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store. A Premium Edition, featuring extra 1000 in-app points, is also available and is currently on sale for $4.99 (standard price: $7.99).
