ARK: Survival Evolved is once again in search of the best mods players have to offer. Studio Wildcard has launched its fourth ARK Modding Contest in search of the best mods from the community. The prize pool for creatives/creative teams is $35,000.

This year's entries are being separated into two categories: maps and mods. As it is still a single contest, creators can only enter one category.

To participate in this year's contest, modders should go to the Epic Store and download the ARK development kit, participate in the Unreal Engine ARK Modding Forum, and find content to work off of in the Unreal Engine Marketplace. Interested modders should check out the official rules on ARK's website.

All creations must be submitted by June 29. After the submission period, the final entries will be picked by the development team. The community will then have two weeks to vote for its favorite creations.

Those that vote will be entered into a raffle to win an ARK: Survival Evolved Collector's Edition signed by the development team.

The number winner will receive $10,000; their mod or map will be included in the game. Second and third place crreators or teams will earn $5,000 and $2,500, respectively.

First introducing Unreal Engine 4 to its modding community in 2015, Studio Wildcard created one of the first custom mod editors. Since then, various creators have added a plethora of content to ARK: Survival Evolved. The most ambitious of modders have refined their creations throughout the first three Modding Contests; previous entries to the contest have included Tribe Wars, Valhalla, and the Ragnarok map

Aliens Vs. Predator

\n

Get It Here!

\n

It took me a little while to get on board with this one, but now it totally makes sense. I mean, the predators have whole worlds devoted to hunting various dangerous creatures, so it could make sense for Ark to just be one of their hunt playgrounds.

\n

Of course wandering xenos spawn across the map with this mod -- but that's just the tip of the iceberg, since it lets you play as a predator and adds in classic predator abilities like thermal vision.

Friendship is survival! Add a little Rainbow Dash into your Ark experience with this hilarious mod that creates colorful unicorns covered in glitter who spawn wherever Equus are normally found.

\n

Everything gets rainbow-ized, and I mean everything -- from tri-colored unicorn poop to a very fabulous roar attack. Just don't be surprised if your tribe members give you some side eye when you roll on up on your purple unicorn. It's the perfect mod for all you bronies out there.

Small Dragons

Get It Here!

\n

Sadly this mod now has more than a few kinks in it since the 260 update, which will hopefully be resolved before too long. The basics still work, but there are some serious problems with animations and spawning.

\n

What you get are smaller versions of that epic (and frustratingly hard) dragon boss, including the ability to tame, saddle, armor, and of course ride each randomly spawning dragon. Your whole tribe can eventually soar through the skies on a flight of colorful dragons!

Lately we have been getting more mythical beasts in updates, expansions, and official mods -- but there's always more room for magical creatures in Ark's vast landscapes.

While Scorched Earth gave us the hard-to-acquire wyverns, this fan mod adds in the legendary Manticore, which is tamed in a similar way by stealing an egg and then pacifying a female of the species to acquire milk.

Another flying beast is always a welcome addition. And as you can see by the size comparison to some golems, these bad buys get big!

Jurassic Park Expansion

15 new dinos and creatures are added with this mod, all modeled after dinosaurs from the Jurassic Park franchise... and featuring their JP sound effects as well!

Remember the Spinasaurus from Jurassic Park 3, or that goo-spitting Dilophosaurus from the original movie? Yep, they're both there, as is the poor goat that gets eaten by the T-Rex.

Now just build some pens that will inevitably fail and invite your friends and family to come gawk at your tamed dinos. I'm sure nothing at all will go wrong, and it certainly won't go wrong four separate movies in a row!

Classic Flyers

\n

Get It Here!

\n

Considering this "early access" game is now up to version 263, it goes without saying that there have been more than a few changes to creatures and stats since Ark was first released.

\n

Not everyone has been crazy about all of those changes, most notably in how certain flying dinos were nerfed in various updates. With the Classic Flyers mod, original stats are returned to the Argent, Moth, Pelas, Ptero, Quetz, Tapejara, and Wyvern -- in addition to returning the ability to level up the speed stat.

Homing Pigeon

\n

Get It Here!

\n

One of the single most useful creature mods, the homing pigeon won't be carrying your tribe into battle or even scouting out locations -- but it does provide a much-needed service.

This mod lets you place flags as locations, then equip the homing pigeon leg ring on any of your flying beasts. You can manually recall any flyers to the flag, or when you die, your "pigeon" will automatically return to the flag location.

No more losing your dumb flyers who get eaten while randomly wandering around! The tribe log is also updated when the flyer is recalled, letting your tribe know what happened so everyone is well informed of player activity.

Rather than adding in new dinos to the spawn list, this mod instead extends the range of coloration on all existing creatures for a more satisfying color palette.

Blue rexs, shockingly white raptors, pink and teal fish, jet black flying birds, and more can all be achieved by adding in a few extra colors to the various creature skins.

How Extinction Mod Changed the Face of ARK: Survival Evolved https://www.gameskinny.com/iwnxt/how-extinction-mod-changed-the-face-of-ark-survival-evolved https://www.gameskinny.com/iwnxt/how-extinction-mod-changed-the-face-of-ark-survival-evolved Wed, 28 Dec 2016 12:34:07 -0500 Serhii Patskan

Earlier this month, the long-anticipated modification for ARK: Survival Evolved -- Extinction -- finally released on Steam. This massive modification adds a whole new dimension to the PvE experience of the game that can be enjoyed both in single and multiplayer formats.

While the Extinction mod offers a well-balanced PvP experience, the developers (the same people that created Annunaki Genesis mod) have stated many times that its purpose is PvE first and foremost. The mod adds a number of new creatures, items and mechanics that have the capacity to challenge even the most experienced survivalists.

So let’s take a deeper look at what’s inside the celebrated Extinction mod for ARK: Survival Evolved.

The Creatures of Extinction Mod

ARK extinction mod

Extinction mod adds several new types of creatures to the game. Some of them are upgraded versions of the animals from the original Annunaki mod, while others are unique to this modification.

Prime Creatures

Previously the Prime category of creatures couldn’t be tamed, but in Extinction mod you can finally tame and ride these stronger and larger iterations of the original animals. They also have different abilities and balance.

Tribal People

The new types of tribesmen are extremely powerful NPCs that can become either good friends (meaning that they can be recruited), or your worst nightmare. If you encounter a tribal chief, be prepared for a devastating battle -- because chiefs are unrecruitable.

Alpha Creatures

This is another type of creature that couldn’t be bred or tamed before -- but the new mod changes this, and all Alphas are now tamable. They are larger and stronger variants of the Prime creatures, and managing to kill one will net you some rare loot.

Skeletal Creatures

This type of creature could be seen only in the Halloween event for ARK, titled “Fear Evolved 2.” Now, you can see them again in Extinction mod. Often you can see them roaming the land with a bunch of zombies by their side, as if them alone wasn’t enough.

Apex Creatures

These are stronger and hunkier versions of the Apex creatures from the previous Annunaki mod. If you meet one and you feel that your level of preparation is not enough, it is better not to engage -- most likely you will lose the fight.

Bosses

Bosses can now be tamed, too. Actually, they have to be tamed -- as without them it would be practically impossible to fight the end-game Guardians. However, keep in mind that while being tamed their functions remain quite limited.

Guardians

Guardians are the most powerful creatures in the game. Guardians are elementals that possess huge powers, health pools, and of course, some fantastic loot. Each biome has its own guardian, so recruit those bosses and be ready to fight for your life.

The Mechanics of Extinction Mod

ARK extinction mod

Items Classification

One of the biggest changes that made its way into the Extinction mod is a complete re-hash of the item quality system. Depending on their rarity, items are now classified as Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, or Artifact.

Some items are so rare that they cannot be crafted or obtained by learning their engrams -- they can only be looted from the defeated Bosses or Guardians. However, most of the weapons, tools and armory can be crafted at the Workbench, as usually.

Taming Beasts

Creatures in Extinction mod behave in a more advanced way than in the vanilla version. Hence, you can approach the taming process in more ways than before.

This includes the forceful way by knocking down the creature. But if you feel that you can do it differently (this typically depends on your experience level), then you can use animals or items that can attract a creature of your interest, which in this case can be tamed more or less peacefully.

Consumables

A number of really strong consumables have been added to this modification, such as XP Potions. They are extremely rare to obtain, but if you have just one such potion it can instantly increase the number of your experience points. However, there is a limit to such number set by the dedicated server configurations.

Another one is Status Boosters that can be given to both the player and a creature in order to quickly recover one’s health, stamina or levels of oxygen. The only drawback of such stat booster is the cooldown timer, since the effects are not permanent.

Conclusion

You must have figured out already that Extinction mod is not for the faint-hearted, and actually it would be better to play it through with a co-op partner or a few. This way you will have more chances to reach the end-game content.

The team working behind the mod is constantly updating and fixing it, so you can always expect new things coming to the fantastical world of ARK: Survival Evolved.

How to Create Procedurally Generated Maps in Ark: Survival Evolved for Xbox One https://www.gameskinny.com/83by7/how-to-create-procedurally-generated-maps-in-ark-survival-evolved-for-xbox-one https://www.gameskinny.com/83by7/how-to-create-procedurally-generated-maps-in-ark-survival-evolved-for-xbox-one Wed, 21 Dec 2016 11:39:48 -0500 Justin Michael

A few days ago, the Xbox One build of Ark: Survival Evolved came out and gave the console community something PC players have already been enjoying -- a custom map editor. To get to this new feature, simply navigate to the host/local option on the main menu screen and click the new "Create Procedurally Generated ARK" button.

Now you and your crew have the ability to create your very own procedurally generated maps with a score of options to truly give it a unique feel. So what kind of options do you have for creating your maps? Let's dig into the settings.

Biome Generation

There are a number of biome settings that can be used to customize your map in a number of different ways. For example, the Snow Biome Setting by default is 0.3, meaning that roughly 30% of the map will be snow-covered. If set to 1.0 then theoretically the whole map will be covered in snow, perfect if you're going for a winter-themed playthrough. Additionally, there are settings for the following biomes:

  • Redwood Biome size
  • Jungle Biome size
  • Deep Water Biome
  • Various island shape settings

Once you've figured out your perfect mix of biome types, or that one biome to rule them all, it's time to dig into the real technical stuff -- the terrain generation settings.

Terrain Settings

We know from the previous section that we can choose a from a good mix of biome types and how prevalent we'd like them to be in our custom Ark map but the settings are where we really start to see our custom map come to life.

There is an important caveat here that needs to be heeded -- bigger numbers does not mean better in this case. Also, these are the values that are going to be most taxing on your console.

From the previous section, I told you that 0.3 was the default biome size for the Snow Biome, meaning that 30% of the map should be covered in snow. The terrain settings do not work on that same principle. The density values, in the most basic of terms, just jam more of that thing into the same amount of space. So, if you were to set the density of the Redwood Biome Trees to something like 3.0 your console is probably going to start dropping frames because of the sheer density. The default value on the original map is somewhere close to 0.001 for comparison.

You can also set a number of other options, like mountain frequency/slope/height. The higher the values, the more mountains generated. Also, the higher the slope and height, the steeper the mountains are and the closer to the clouds they'll reach.

There is so much to tinker with that the best thing to do is to sit down and tinker away. Maybe think up a few themed maps like a mostly water world or a dense jungle planet. With these new tools, you have nearly endless possibilities for creativity.

And so we reach the end of our adventure through the modding community of ARK: Survival Evolved. I've attempted to keep the mod selection diverse and made selections based on high quality. I assure you that this is only scratching the surface, however, and that there are countless other projects out there for you to find.

\n

All sorts of crafting and dinosaur mods are available, as well as a host of new map options. Even the official mod packs such as Survival of the Fittest and Primitive+ can offer you plenty of additional play options. If all else fails, just grabbing some friends and joining a random server is likely to provide you with some entertainment.

\n

Whatever the case, this has hopefully been a good entry point into seeing what's available to enhance your ARK experience.

Play As Dino!
\n

I had to save the best for last. Sure, existing among the dinosaurs on The Island is a lot of fun, but don't you wish that you could play as the dinosaur instead? Your wish is this mod's command.

\n

Offering the ability to play as many of the species in the game, be it an allosaurus, a dragon, or even a dodo, Play As Dino has it all. You're able to take your dinosaur character through the world, find others of your kind, breed with others and ultimately form a pack to survive.

\n

The mod also offers a number of boss creatures for you to overcome if you're a solo player, or else you can battle your friends for dominance to become King of the Dinos. However you choose to play it, this is a very neat addition to the ARK experience.

Ark Remastered
\n

Unlike other total conversion mods, Ark Remastered doesn't seek to add anything too massive or introduce a large amount of new content. Instead, it serves as an overhaul of the entire base game of ARK, rebalancing just about every facet of the game.

\n

Creature stats have been adjusted, crafting and material costs are altered to be more consistent, carnivorous dinosaurs now behave more intelligently instead of mercilessly slaughtering entire maps. This and many other adjustments have been made, and ARK feels like a completely new game for all its efforts.

\n

Better yet, this mod should be compatible with most maps and most other mods too. Even if you want to keep your modding experience fairly light, Ark Remastered is an excellent starting point.

You may have built a base, tamed some dinosaurs and bested all the threats that ARK had to offer. But there's still plenty of technology and untapped ideas to explore, and that's where Futurism comes in.

Adding a large variety of advanced technology, players can  assemble armies of drones, harness fusion power to enhance their base, build a network of plasma turrets or even assemble a fleet of spider tanks. It's very detailed, expertly modeled, and incredibly cool.

Ark Pirate World
\n

It's a known fact that pirates are awesome. Despite this, it's surprisingly rare to find a good pirate-themed video game without reaching back to the likes of Sid Meier's Pirates! Thankfully, Ark Pirate World is working to add at least one more title to that list.

\n

A total conversion mod with options for both solo and multiplayer, Ark Pirate World has a completely unique map dotted with islands that house all sorts of settlements and treasure to plunder. Acquire a ship, explore and raid other ships, go treasure hunting or establish your naval tribe and build your own personal port town.

\n

All of this and more is on offer in this mod... though unfortunately, the dinosaurs are disabled, so you can't assemble a pirate T-Rex crew. Maybe in a future update...

It can get kind of lonely on The Island, especially as a solo player. Sure, there are plenty of dinosaurs around, but what if you want the company of other humans without having to deal with other actual live players?

\n

NPC Bush Peoples seeks to overcome this issue by populating the wilderness with human NPCs that function as any other creature would. They will roam, clash with dinosaurs and each other, and generally make the world seem like a bigger and more involved place.

\n

These humans all technically work the same way that dinos do, which means you are also able to tame them and equip them like a personal army. Hilariously, you can even use them as mounts... or, ahem, encourage them to breed. However you choose to utilize them, NPC Bush Peoples adds another interesting element to ARK.

Valhalla
\n

Departing from game changing mods for the moment, I introduce you to Valhalla, the most notable and acclaimed player-made map in the ARK library. More than twice as large as a standard map, Valhalla provides a sprawling landscape consisting of multiple biomes to discover, explore and make your own.

\n

It's fairly easy to find servers running this map, and it was promoted heavily by placing first in the map category of the official mod contest. Sadly, however, this mod is no longer being worked on. The creators have started on a new map that will hopefully fix a number of issues in terms of project development and optimization that Valhalla struggled with.

\n

Until that's ready to go, however, Valhalla is still a fantastic map and well worth your time.

STARK WARS: Survival Evolved
\n

Soaring through the skies on the back of a pterodactyl is a fun experience, but there are times when you want something a little more impressive. Something with more firepower. Something like, oh, an Imperial TIE Fighter!

\n

This mod adds a host of Star Wars themed items to construct and wield. From Stormtrooper armor, to lightsabers or blaster rifles, to Star Wars themed building blocks -- and all the way up to a pilotable X-Wing or TIE Fighter -- this mod gives you plenty of fun crossover silliness to indulge in.

Advanced Architecture
\n

So your tribe has made it to the late game and wants to build something more impressive than their basic houses and forts. Clearly, the answer is to construct a massive and ornate castle to show their dominance.

\n

Winner of the official ARK Mods Contest, Advanced Architecture lets you do just that. Starting at Level 40, players get access to the Royal Engineer's Workstation, which lets them construct all the parts and pieces needed for such massive feats of construction. Their resource costs are expensive and time-consuming, but the end results are truly impressive to behold.

\n

This is best used on a PvE server with a friendly tribe to help you out. I'm not responsible for what happens if you attempt to build this with enemy players around.

Of the many survival games to spring up in the wake of DayZ's success, there are few that have garnered as much attention and players as ARK: Survival Evolved. It takes all the best elements of a good survival game, such as resource gathering and base building, and then throws in a vast island full of dinosaurs for you to defeat and tame. Who doesn't want to tame an army of raptors?

\n

The core game itself has been in Early Access for a while, and the developers have been adding content at a fairly frequent pace. Sure, you could argue that it's sometimes untested and unoptimised, not to mention the whole business of having a paid expansion pack for an unreleased game... but it's still a game that the developers are continuing to work on. There's plenty of fun to be had here.

\n

Of course, the fun of the base game may eventually grow stale and familiar. Sometimes you want to spice up the game with something new and interesting. Thankfully, ARK has a solid modding scene that is constantly delivering balance tweaks, new features and even total overhauls.

We've taken the liberty of assembling a list of some of the most interesting, creative and popular mods or conversions for your playing pleasure. With luck, you'll find something that piques your interest!
