The latest Street Fighter V updates have given Ken a new look...again, and gamers don’t seem to like this one. Ken’s new look is like a shoryuken to the face; expected but still a surprise! Capcom, you’ve got some ‘splaning to do!

Ken's new haircut that came with the updates is what has the Fighting Game Community button's in a jam. Quiet a few characters received new looks but Ken’s military, Johnny Cage looking hair cut is definitely the least favorite. The characters that have new outfits are:

Chun-Li & Vega

R. Mika & Cammy

Rashid too!

The original reveal of Ken’s new hairstyle and outfit for Street Fighter V was accepted with open arms, although with the original reveal some gamers noted he does look a bit darker than usual. That could just be the determination right? Ryu always looks angry and no one gives him guff so let Ken have his angry face.

While many gamers weren't thrown off by Ken’s new look, others did make fun of his bangs saying they look like bananas. SFV producer, Yoshinori Ono defended Ken's new look, saying:

“We heard that people aren't happy with the changes we made to Ken, but be sure that we're not changing him because we hate him. We think everybody will understand why we made those changes by playing the story mode we’ll be announcing eventually. I also want to add that what he has on his head is definitely not a banana!”

SFV players seem to only have a problem with Ken's new appearance, as there hasn't been any disapproval over other characters' outfits. In fact, many  players have protested the look with parody images and memes. You can see a few of these below.

1. Dead or Alive ‘Hugging’ pillowcase

\n

Oh… dear.

\n

Yes, this really is a ‘hugging’ pillow case featuring a naked Kasumi (I think) from Dead or Alive. Seeing as this ‘pillowcase’ is an unusual 5-feet in length and referred to as a ‘hugging’ case shows how little effort has gone into hiding the fact it’s essentially a humping toy for human Jack Russells. The listing recommends the item for Christmas - a perfect gift for Grandpa - and for hotels, as if they didn’t have to deal with enough filthy bedding. It’s also patterned on both sides, meaning it can be used twice before needing a wash… ugh.

2. Tetris interactive dress

\n

If you’re so naive as to think that a Tetris dress would be weird enough on its own, then get a load of this interactive Tetris dress. Yes, the blocks on this garment really are able to detach and reattach, meaning any ladies who wear this on a night out can expect to be grabbed incessantly by seedy men who claim they “just want to get the long, thin one in the right hole.”

3. Mana and health potion earrings

\n

Nothing says “I’m a dedicated follower of fashion and still know that some dice have more than six sides” quite like these fantastic health and mana potion earrings. Frankly, no RPG player worth their rocksalt should be without these, even if they’re just used as ornaments. If you do have pierced ears and decide to hit the town sporting a pair, then be prepared for gasps of awe from fellow Diablo fans - alongside looks of confusion from everyone else.

4. Street Fighter Sexy Chun Li Fabric Wall Scroll Poster

\n

Here we have a wall scroll poster of Chun Li as you’ve never seen her before. Or at least parts of her you’ve never seen before - unless you’re a fan of hentai. We all know that everyone’s favorite cosplay character has some pretty meaty thighs in the game, but Jesus! they’re bigger than her entire upper torso in this picture. And really, she must feel like she’s being cut in two when fighting in that kind of attire.

5. Watch Dogs Lanyard

\n

Now, this is pretty weird. If you check in the comments you’ll find one woman complaining that she bought it for her nephew, but it wasn’t exactly what he wanted; not really surprised by that. As lanyards go, I’m sure this is highly functional and does the job well, but I’ll reiterate: it’s just a bit… weird. If, however, you buy the PC version of this item, remember that it won’t work at all until Ubisoft put out an update a month later.

6. World of Warcraft Tankard O'Terror

\n

Even though its numbers have been dwindling over the last few years, World of Warcraft is still a pretty big deal. Here’s a scary fact for you: the cumulative number of hours clocked up by WoW players is nearly 6 million years - longer than humanity has been evolving as a species. Anyway, the game’s responsible for a slew of Azeroth-based merchandise, but this is one of the slightly weirder (and cooler) ones. A direct replica of an in-game item, this big, heavy stein is only for the most ardent of WoW fans, particularly as it costs $189! Still, there’s no better accessory to go with an imposing beard and a replica of Frostmourne.

7. Pac-Man energy drinks

\n

If you want develop mild heart palpitations and start sweating profusely, then perhaps you should consider purchasing the ‘Pac-Man Fruit and Power up Energy Set’. I consume about 4 cans of energy drinks a day, meaning I’m no stranger to the crushing addiction that comes with these caffeine-loaded treats.  There is a danger that using this product will turn you into a giant yellow ball with a mouth and cause you to emit “WAKA WAKA WAKA” noises.*

8. Vanessa from The King of Fighters statue

\n

This statue of Vanessa from the King of the Fighters series is one of many similar recreations of female video game characters with their clothes falling off. Vanessa is known for her trademark white shirt and red tie, but here it’s been decided she’s better represented with her boobs half exposed. They never do this kind of thing for the male fighters, although I’m not sure how successful a statue of Balrog flashing his green monster would be.

Bayonetta’s well known in her games for flashing a bit of flesh, but these decals are about as adult as it gets before the whole thing moves into ‘fan-drawn’ territory. 10. Video gamer basket care package

\n

While it’s admittedly a bit of a stretch putting this under video game merchandise, it still gets a place for being so weirdly stereotypical. You can imagine the person behind this collection is thinking:

\n
\n

“So you’re a gamer? Then you’ll definitely like this array of high-sugar, teeth-rotting, obesity-causing foodstuff.”

\n
\n

The only surprise is that they didn’t include some acne cream and a goth CD with it. It does come with a $10 Xbox gift card which, if it still works, may be put to better use by trading it for insulin.

11. Super Mario and Princess Toadstool cross stitch pamphlet

\n

Finally, the worlds of video games and embroidery come crashing together with this pamphlet. It contains that rarest of things: cross stitch designs for Mario and Princess Peach. This is a bit of collector’s item from 1990, and would be a pretty unique piece for Mario aficionados. 12. Plants vs Zombies Peashooter slippers

\n

I find that these manage to be both pretty weird and totally awesome, and I should know - I own a pair. No fan of Plants vs Zombies should be without these peashooter slippers; not only are they comfortable and keep your feet warm, but they are sure to act as a zombie deterrent once the inevitable undead apocalypse arrives. One word of warning from personal experience: never try to run very fast down stairs while wearing them.

13. Doom: The Board Game

\n

Amazingly, someone had the very weird idea of taking an extremely linear, albeit awesome, title like Doom and turning it into a board game. And you know what? It’s actually really good! The game design is excellent and follows a lot of D&D staples such as movement values, AoE, and line of sight. It’s out of print now, and something of a collector’s piece.

14. Sexy Super Mario Brothers Halloween costumes

\n

Like almost every red-blooded male, I’ve often looked at Mario and Luigi and wondered what they would look like as sexy, moustachioed women. 15. Sonic the Hedgehog headphones

\n

Abandoning all concept of subtlety, wearing these Sonic the Hedgehog headphones really lets people know you’re a big fan of the Sega mascot - and not afraid to show it. “There’s no such thing as too much merchandising.”

\n

So goes the saying of anyone involving in the marketing side of the video games industry. If they can think it up, they’ll produce it, regardless of how bad, inappropriate, or just plain weird the concept. Plus, no matter what it is, chances are people will still buy it. And with good right! Why be the millionth person to own a t-shirt with Pikachu on it when you can have the little yellow Pokemon and his friends adorning your very own menstrual pad?

\n

Okay, so that extreme example would be bought for more of a conversational piece than for practical use, one would hope.

\n

This list comprises examples of the most kitsch, kinky, cool, and so-weird-I-must-have-it pieces of video game merchandise around. And the best thing is, you can actually buy them from Amazon! A few of them I actually have... but not number one, honest *cough*.

Princess Zelda

\n

The oft-kidnapped Princess Zelda is often in royal garb, and appropriately Meder chose to associate her with fashion icon Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge (also known as Kate Middleton).

\n

Princess Zelda is the most demurely dressed of the group, and appropriately so -- after all, that is her character. Still, the outfit is very different from the traditional princess-wear and was a part of subversive designer Alexander McQueen's Fall 2008 line. McQueen is the designer of choice for over-the-top fashions (Lady Gaga is known for wearing runway McQueen) and in fact the Duchess of Cambridge wore a McQueen get-up for her royal wedding. So, really he's the perfect designer for a character like Zelda.

\n
\n

"McQueen's clothing plays on ideas of female submission and corrupted power, which I think makes it suitable for a permanently kidnapped heroine."

\n
\n

What do you think of these re-imagined video game heroines? Who do you wish Meder had chosen to reinvent?

"},{"image":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/5998f486656980d5f46deadbd39bf56c.png","thumb":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/tiny_5998f486656980d5f46deadbd39bf56c.png","type":"slide","id":"19138","description":"

Mileena

\n

The pink clad, fairly naked Mileena of Mortal Kombat is known as a monstrously deformed and mentally unbalanced clone of Kitana. Due to this mental instability, Meder related Mileena to infamous train wreck Lindsay Lohan.

\n

In her words; "Lohan's got this scattershot fashion sense that occasionally veers towards the overly-revealing." Meder's version of Mileena looks delightfully unhinged in an appropriate way, allowing the clothes to tell elements of her character.

\n

Meder chose Balmain Spring 2011 as the collection of inspiration, saying it "is the perfect collection for Mileena because it's essentially made for a hot mess of a rich girl, outrageous tastelessness rendered uber-fashionable by the fact that it's very, very expensive."

"},{"image":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/7b0055b312c1c45b5e27feb0ac8a211a.png","thumb":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/tiny_7b0055b312c1c45b5e27feb0ac8a211a.png","type":"slide","id":"19134","description":"

Commander Shepard (FemShep)

\n

In the exceptionally popular franchise Mass Effect, you are allowed to choose your gender. If so, then you got to play as Fem Shep. Much like the other military officers in ME, Fem Shep is often depicted wearing skin tight body suits and armor.

\n

Meder took reference from designer Gareth Pugh, as well as fashion icon Daphne Guinness;

\n
\n

"Daphne Guinness is both an aristocratic authority figure and an artistic iconoclast; I think her style is suitable for Commander Shepard because she champions individuality over 'robotic' sameness (paralleling Shepard's mission), while at the same time affecting costumes that are aggressive and strong."

\n
\n

Meder's decision is both futuristic and strong, it's definitely one of the more aggressive looks she put together for her collection.

"},{"image":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/6de333967b6fa3a3905476f33fa5b89c.png","thumb":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/tiny_6de333967b6fa3a3905476f33fa5b89c.png","type":"slide","id":"19132","description":"

Chun-Li

\n

Another one of the most recognizable characters in gaming is Chun-Li. Featured in the classic Street Fighter, Chun-Li is typically seen in a Chinese style gown, slit up the side, with her hair in dual buns.

\n

For this look, Meder chose to avoid putting her in classic "oriental" fashions that she typically wears in game. Instead, Meder associated Chun-Li with style icon Anne Hathaway and dress her in classic luxury brand Burberry.

\n

Meder researched Chinese beauty standards and came to the determination that a decidedly Western look would suit the classic fighting character; "Modern Chinese fashion favours familiar luxury brands, however the overtly logo-ed branding of Louis Vutton is now falling out of favour for the more subtle...Burberry. The Chinese conception of glamour is hyper-feminine, wealth-driven, and yet also understated, and you never see Chinese actresses wearing "oriental" fashions on the red carpet."

\n

It's an interesting look. Fighting games almost infamously choose to highlight cultural differences in their characters, often with a character "representing" an entire country, which is why you get so many stereotypical characters in fighting games. However, Chun-Li's look is very editorial and high fashion, and still takes into account her ability to do the high kicks she is so well known for.

"},{"image":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/fbabdf663f96f6facf234a0741140a48.png","thumb":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/tiny_fbabdf663f96f6facf234a0741140a48.png","type":"slide","id":"19129","description":"

Lara Croft

\n

Lara Croft is one of the most iconic figures of gaming, and when you ask someone to list a heroine, Lara is undoubtedly on the list. Described as intelligent, beautiful, and with a very wealthy background, she is usually dressed in some variation of short shorts and tank tops, with her characteristic hip holster.

\n

For inspiration, Ms. Meder chose style icon Sienna Miller, who herself comes from a wealthy background, but dresses in a characteristically bohemian way. Meder described the collection she chose in a way that sort of describes Ms. Croft:

\n
\n

"I've chosen one of the controversial Saint Laurent Paris collections by Hedi Slimane - his rich girls also reject their European blue blood by dressing inspired by "the streets" of California, and notoriously not even carrying handbags."

\n
\n

The look on Lara Croft is interesting. It still plays up her sexuality, a frankly key part of her character, but it still plays into that female Indiana Jones thing that is important to her character. Also, I really dig the hat.

"},{"image":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/f53e1950ce60262bc3d803932ef30149.jpg","thumb":"http://images.gameskinny.com/gameskinny/tiny_f53e1950ce60262bc3d803932ef30149.jpg","type":"slide","id":"19128","description":"

Danielle Meder is a fashion illustrator, and herself says that she is not a gamer. But for Double Flawless, an exquisitely well-researched look into high fashion trends on classic gaming heroines, she took a fresh look at these heroines and what their styles represent.

\n
\n

"I approached this project as a total outsider. Video game heroines, to a fresh eye, are very peculiar indeed. The way they behave and dress reflects the male majority of their beholders. So how would they appear if they were style icons, appealing to the female gaze."

\n
\n

For each character, Ms. Meder chose a style icon to act as inspiration for their specific look, as well as a designer collection to dress them in.
