I was an Air Bender well before Aang came along.

Besides developing games at Artix Entertainment, I am also a balloon artist, capable of twisting up squeaky colorful creations of anything that I (or eager onlookers) can imagine.

After 10 years of being a professional airhead, I’ve made balloon creations of just about every animal, every princess, every superhero—everything. I am always up for a challenge, and in order to keep my hands busy with something else besides Battle Gems, I decided to make some video game character balloon art.

Let’s play!

Nintendo Balloon Animals

More popular than Nerf Guns and Tamagotchis and the little gray weasel that rolled around on a ball, the Super Nintendo was hailed as the most beloved toy during my childhood. And for good reason too—Nintendo created some of my most memorable memories, and now I get to create tangible visual representations!

 Mario

From NES to N64 and beyond, Mario has always been my favorite plumber with questionable eating habits.

 Goomba

Don’t let that face fool you. This Goomba is not a fun guy.

 Bob-omb

BWAAHA! *pulls out needle* Now I get to have my revenge!

Oh yeah, I just made a Kirby balloon animal. Sneaking this in to see if anyone notices...

Final Fantasy Balloon Animals

It is undisputable fact that Final Fantasy X is the best RPG ever created, but not enough balloon animals have been created in its honor. I am here to change that.

 Cactuar

What’s the best thing about Balloon Cactuar? It can’t attack with 10,000 needles!

Black Mage

Okay, so he’s not from FF X, but a classic character nonetheless. I’ve always loved Kazuko Shibuya’s Black Mage from the original Final Fantasy games—and here’s my 3D version!

Chocobo

And last but not least… it’s not Final Fantasy without Chocobos! Unless it’s FF 1, because they didn’t flock onto the scene until FF II. /history lesson

World of Warcraft Balloon Animal

So tell me… who else took the day off to play Warlords of Draenor? *shifty eyes* Well. I couldn’t, because I spent way too long trying to design a World of Warcraft-themed balloon animal.

 Orc

This guy *started off* as Thrall… but do you have any idea how difficult his facial hair is? To create out of balloons nonetheless? And there’s like NO WAY I could make his armor set. Geeze, I’m just a balloon artist, not a magician.

Artix Entertainment Balloon Animals

And now to plug in some shameless self-promotion! I’ve worked at Artix Entertainment for the past 5 years, and I’ve twisted some AdventureQuest Worlds-themed balloons here and there, but… I never took photos of my work! Screenshot or it didn’t happen, amirite?

 Artix the Paladin

This paladin is so popular that an entire video game studio was named after him! Also helps that he’s the CEO’s avatar.

Drawing on balloons with sharpies and paint markers is just as insanely difficult as it sounds. And the face is what really makes the balloon creation pop—figuratively, of course. I attempted drawing Artix’s Battle Gems expression, and… well… it kinda makes him look a bit too happy.

So I gave him some plastic surgery and planted a new face on the Artix balloon. And now he looks a bit too Anime!

But I am still a bit partial to the first Artix face… so I gave the real-life Artix action-figure a face-lift, too.

Hehe, they’re all so silly, aren’t they? And they are a foolproof way to guarantee that no real work will get done the rest of the day (unless Vines and Tweets count as work).

 Twilly the Moglin

No, no, this isn’t a shiny red Pikachu; it’s actually a little red healing Moglin named Twilly. He’s been around since Artix’s first RPG AdventureQuest at www.BattleOn.com, and is always there to offer a helping hand… um, paw.

Zorbak the Moglin

Meh heh heh! Zorbak is the most evil Moglin in all of AQ Worlds. I mean, that kind of goes without saying—just look at that diabolical staff. #StraightUpEvil

And there you have it – my hands and lungs have been exhausted for your amusement. I hope you have enjoyed everything, and I would love to hear your comments below as to what new video game character balloon animals I should twist up next!

P.S. I also made a balloon version of my 2014 Dragon Slayer Awards Trophy! But with a pink sword. Because we gatta have a little bit of Beleen flair in there!

GameSkinny's sister site, Guild Launch, is holding their third annual Dragon Slayer Awards, and they need you to choose who wins!

Nominated this year for Notable Gaming Personality is Sean Plott, better known as Day[9]. Day[9] first made a name for himself by professionally playing StarCraft for over 12 years.

So, why should Day[9] get your vote?

Awards and Achievements

During his gaming career, Day[9] has qualified for several professional-level gaming competitions, and won the Pan American Championship in 2007. He was also on Forbes' list of 30 under 30: Entertainment.

Active in the Industry

He continues his love for gaming as an e-sports commentator, and is still very involved in the StarCraft community. In 2010, he co-founded Jink.TV, "an interactive media company," through which he created his popular show the Day[9] Daily. During the show, Day[9] talks about all things StarCraft, to help other gamers improve their skills and complete their goals. He also does play-throughs of other games in a separate series of videos known as Day[9]'s Day Off

In addition to working on his own company, he has also worked with Felicia Day's company Geek & Sundry. The show Spellslingers, currently in its second season on Geek & Sundry's YouTube channel, invites guests to play Magic: The Gathering against Day[9]. He has also partnered with game developer Artillery Games, to design a new game.

Guild Launch, GameSkinny’s sister site, is once again opening up the opportunity for gamers to vote in the annual Dragon Slayer Awards. These awards help recognize who provides the best content throughout the gaming community. Not only do the awards feature video games and community management, but gaming video personalities as well. Included in the nomination list for “Notable Machinima or Video Series” includes an unlikely Canadian duo who call themselves “best friends.”

Patrick “Pat” Boivin and Matt are two gaming companions brought together from different backgrounds, but they make up the comical “Two Best Friends Play” series on Machinima. Their experience recording Let’s Play videos has existed across eight seasons since 2011, with 117 thousand followers on YouTube and close to 30 of their videos with over one million hits.

While they feed off of each other’s playful jabs and verbalized thoughts, they are a duo that almost did not happen. Still, they continue to showcase how their separate personalities unite with equal interests in video games.

Matt was looking to record a Kirby’s Epic Yarn Let’s Play video with Woolie Madden, and instead, was recommended to film with Pat. The two bonded after the video was completed, but Pat still eventually admitted to thinking Matt was “a weirdo" upon meeting him for the first time.

These ridiculing remarks are a part of “Angry” Pat’s personality, as he is cynical and pessimistic. While he is constantly fault-finding, he still falls for Matt’s playful antics. When Pat is more negative, Matt brings out his optimistic and silly nature, which naturally promotes an elongated but interesting dialogue as they play video games. Even though Matt seems like the easier going person compared to Pat, he subtlety provides knowledgeable critiques created from his previous experience being a quality assurance video game tester for games such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

What is most attractive about the commentary they create from Let’s Play videos is the delicate mix of fun facts, jokes, emotions, playful jabs, and live analysis. Their ideas constantly build on top of each other’s; they never let their material settle until they have traded it back and fourth. This constant game of verbal catch shows how engaged and synchronized they are in trying to either agree or disagree. They are not afraid to laugh at or verbally knock just how different they are when talking to each other or playing video games.

To cast votes for any category or nominee of the Dragon Slayer awards, gamers can go to the promotion tab at Guild Launch’s support section of their site.

Tobuscus Nominated for Best Gaming Personality 2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/m2aeg/tobuscus-nominated-for-best-gaming-personality-2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/m2aeg/tobuscus-nominated-for-best-gaming-personality-2014 Thu, 14 Aug 2014 12:43:24 -0400 Yasmin Curren

The Dragon Slayer Awards, hosted by our sister site, Guild Launch, is back! These awards allow you to have your say on what and who are the gems of the gaming world. The awards this year focus mainly on games, comics, communities, and even gaming personalities!

Tobuscus (TobyTurner) is one of those up for nomination for Best Gaming Personality of 2014. If you are an avid internet explorer then you have probably stumbled across one of his many popular online videos which he has been creating ever since joining YouTube in 2006. If not from the Internet than perhaps you have heard of him from his television appearances in films such as New Low, or the Cartoon Network animated series, The High Fructose Adventures of Annoying Orange. Failing that, then perhaps his advert appearances for companies such as Pop Tarts or the game he funded through indiegogo, Tobuscus Advertures: Wizards will jog your mind!

Yes that's right, this is one busy guy!

His main presence remains on YouTube. Since 2014 Toby has created 3 main YouTube channels to spread out his many talents. TobyTurner for personal, unedited videos of his life, which he likes to call 'lazy vlogs', to connect with his audience on a more one-to-one basis. TobyGames, dedicated to Lets Plays of popular games such as Minecraft and Happy Wheels where he entertains his audience by enthusiastically commentating on these games, using silly voices and phrases to inject the in-game characters with life.

Finally, Tobuscus, the channel where his online career all started in May of 2014. This channel shows off his, often rather silly, creative concoctions. From sketches to animated songs it's no wonder why so many people enjoy his content; especially if they share his love of gaming!

Toby's 'Literal' series is one of the most popular on his Tobuscus YouTube channel. The idea is simple, to watch trending trailers and comment on precisely what is shown throughout them. These videos gained him recognition from mainstream gaming news agencies such as CBS Evening News and Wired.

Turner has figured out a successful formula for spinning parody gold out of Hollywood’s incessant stream of movie teases: Ridicule the hype machine by pointing out the obvious.

- Wired

These videos are so unique that you will have to watch one for yourself to understand how this simplistic series got so much attention.

Since starting YouTube Toby has gained over 5 million subscribers!

tobuscusRecently Toby attended Vidcon 2014 where he greeted his fans and showed off his 'comedian' side on stage. Within this performance he played some of his humorous songs on both the guitar and piano.

Now that you know Toby's extensive history, here's a little about what he has planned for the near future:

  • He is writing a zombie book which will be hitting stores next year.
  • A song is in production which will help aid people in learning how to play the piano.
  • As well as this he is also being the main voice actor and creator of his very own game: Tobuscus Adventures: Wizards!

And, knowing Toby, so much more! All we have to do is wait.

gif

Toby's determination, enthusiasm and love for his ever-growing online community has led him to achieve so much already. Not many gaming personalities can say that they have a game being made under their influence!

Tobuscus is one of the most well-known gaming personalities on YouTube. But the question is: could he be Dragon Slayer Awards best Gaming Personality of 2014?

Vote now to help decide!

Marvel Heroes Gaming Community Nominated for a Dragon Slayer Award https://www.gameskinny.com/sjxg4/marvel-heroes-gaming-community-nominated-for-a-dragon-slayer-award https://www.gameskinny.com/sjxg4/marvel-heroes-gaming-community-nominated-for-a-dragon-slayer-award Wed, 13 Aug 2014 10:21:36 -0400 Christine Messere

Marvel Heroes gaming community has been nominated for a Dragon Slayer award in the most passionate gaming community category. What sets the community apart from all the others?

I visited the community and found a lot of useful information such as game tips, tricks, and suggestions.  Above all, I found friendliness.  I saw no drama, no trolls and no bashing.  It was just a friendly bunch of people who were sharing their love of the game Marvel Heroes.

marvel

When I asked the community what made their community the most passionate and most deserving of the Dragon Slayer award, I received an overabundance of responses.

Overwhelming I was told that an excellent staff keeps the bar set high. They keep a close watch on any inkling of drama and shut it down.  If something does go wrong,  players are usually compensated in some sort of way, which is just unheard of in the gaming community overall.  The staff really takes an interest in the community's feelings and ideas.  I was told the staff hardly ever responds negatively.

Another big perk of this community is developer involvement.  Members told me that the game developers are very friendly and make them feel involved.  They make members aware of anything coming up.  I was even told that, at some point, the CEO and his wife put on a fun, informal stream for members.

ceo

Member 'Soulfang" comment," The developers are here 7 days a week, listening and tuning the game to make it better, what more can we want?"  User 'whiskeyyy' replied,"Hands down the best dev group and community I have ever seen. and I plan to stick around for years to come."  A few other users informed me that they've tried other gaming communities but were disappointed when compared to this one.

Because of it's family-feel, non-toxic environment, game developer involvement, and awesome staff, this community continues to flourish and keep its current members happy and active.  For all of these reasons, I believe the Marvel Heroes Gaming Community is a top contender for Dragon Slayers' most passionate gaming community.

Wowcrendor Nominated for Best Machinima or Video Series 2014 - Dragon Slayer Awards https://www.gameskinny.com/cr62h/wowcrendor-nominated-for-best-machinima-or-video-series-2014-dragon-slayer-awards https://www.gameskinny.com/cr62h/wowcrendor-nominated-for-best-machinima-or-video-series-2014-dragon-slayer-awards Sat, 09 Aug 2014 05:14:01 -0400 Angelina Bonilla

Gameskinny’s sister site Guild Launch is hosting the annual Dragon Slayer Awards now. These awards try to showcase and promote some of the best that gaming has to offer. There are six nominated for the award of  Best Machinima or Video Series and now you get to learn about one of them: Wowcrendor.

For anyone who doesn’t know, a Machinima is when is when a video creator uses real-time computer graphics engines to create a video or a movie.   This is the case for the titular creator of the Wowcrendor Youtube Channel who has gradually progressed to a Machinima super star.

From his humble beginnings of writing a script while he was in his college math class, Wowcrendor has put his skills to use and started making videos about World of Warcraft.  The channel’s first video was released in January of 2009 but the channel didn’t take off until the video Unreleased Cataclysm Trailer was released.

Everyone knows that World Of Warcraft or WoW has a huge player base and is one of the most popular MMORPGS of all time.  Any video parody of WoW or its community was bound to get views, but the way Wowcrendor does it, with his own personal brand of snark really helps these videos popularity.

One of his most notable of video series is the How to Win series, in which Wowcrendor tells his audience (and sometimes a new player named Billy) how to win at certain aspects of World Of Warcraft and other games like League of Legends.

He has other series as well. In one, he explains how to tell if your Pug, raid or battleground will fail. In another, he speculates as to what NPCs are thinking. In all his videos, fun and silliness abound.

In a bizarre way, Wowcrendor is parodying the WoW community and attempting to educate them at the same time.  He does videos about other games, especially if they are WoW spinoffs, and they all end up quite humorous no matter what they are about.

Why should you vote for Wowcrendor for this year’s Best Machinima or video series?

Each video is made with love for the game. Wowcrendor has a style of humor that doesn’t rely as much on swearing as some funny people do, but more so on observational humor and snark at others' expense. It never seems mean-spirited, and one of the best things about Wowcrendor’s Machinima is that not only is he poking fun at others but he’s also poking fun at himself.

Wowcrendor’s series of videos are the perfect parody and love letter to the World of Warcraft community. It’s hard to think of any other series topping this funny guy…even if he makes Pointless Top 10s about ceilings.

Dragon Slayer Awards 2014: Notable Gaming Personality https://www.gameskinny.com/w9r0x/dragon-slayer-awards-2014-notable-gaming-personality https://www.gameskinny.com/w9r0x/dragon-slayer-awards-2014-notable-gaming-personality Fri, 08 Aug 2014 17:44:55 -0400 Mary-Kate Wagamon

Whether it's introducing an audience to a new game, providing insight and an area for open discussion about games, or making funny videos related to games, this year's Dragon Slayer Awards nominees for Notable Gaming Personality have the world of gaming covered.

Who are the 2014 nominees?

The nominees for the 2014 awards, are as follows:

I like all of these people. How do I choose just one?

With so many fantastic personalities, it might prove difficult to decide who to rank as #1. All of the nominees are great at what they do, and are passionate about games in one way or another. To help you choose, here are a few things to consider:

Who is the most entertaining?

Each nominee does something that makes them interesting to a large audience. Some of them make videos; some are active in the gaming community in other ways. Which one keeps your interest the most?

Who is the most knowledgable about gaming?

If you're going to be a "Gaming Personality" you typically need to have a good knowledge of games and the world of gaming. Which nominee provides the best information about games or a particular game? Which one is most aware of the latest games or latest developments in a specific game?

Is what they do creative and original?

Creativity and originality are important. There should be something the nominee you choose does that makes them stand above the rest, for you. Do you like their particular take on certain games? Is something they do unlike anything else online right now, or do they just do something better than most?

Once you've considered all of these factors, head on over to the Dragon Slayer Awards page, and cast your vote!

EverQuest Next Nominated for Best New Game on the Horizon - 2014 Dragon Slayer Awards https://www.gameskinny.com/mkf9u/everquest-next-nominated-for-best-new-game-on-the-horizon-2014-dragon-slayer-awards https://www.gameskinny.com/mkf9u/everquest-next-nominated-for-best-new-game-on-the-horizon-2014-dragon-slayer-awards Fri, 08 Aug 2014 16:20:05 -0400 zoLo567

It is time for the third annual Dragon Slayer Awards! Held every year by Guild Launch, GameSkinny's sister site, this is the chance to commemorate some of the best in gaming. One of the categories this year is the "Best New Game on the Horizon", and one of the main contenders is the upcoming EverQuest Next, a great-looking MMORPG with a ton of potential.

Sony Online Entertainment is both developing and publishing EverQuest Next, the successor to the EverQuest series. Rather than being an actual sequel to the previous EverQuest, Next instead takes place in a parallel world to the original. Sony is using their Forgelight game engine, and Next is the second game to use it, following PlanetSide 2.

http://www.gameskinny.com/e5z87/dragon-slayer-award-nominees-best-new-game-on-the-horizon/?new=1

EverQuest Next is an ambitious game. Next will have many great features that help shape your game and the world around you. One feature is full destructability. Every part of the world is destroyable, and players can manipulate it. You can use this to your advantage, and it can help you explore the world and discover what is hidden underneath the world's surface.

Aside from the environment, players are able change the world around them as well. Castle walls can rise and fall. Large scale wars will be fought. Kings will live and die. Players are able to transform the game world, completely based on the decisions that they make. Thus, gamers are able to make dramatic changes that stay permanent, and influence the direction that the game takes. This goes into character choices as well. The characters of Next remember your actions, and they will act accordingly.

http://www.cinemablend.com/games/EverQuest-Next-Ditches-Holy-Trinity-58180.html

There are even more choices when it comes to classes. There will be 40 classes (or professions) at launch, and players will be able to mix and match abilities as long as they have unlocked them. This will allow gamers to make the character they want to make, and not restrict them to only one class.

One of the biggest draws for EverQuest Next is EverQuest Landmark. In Landmark, players are free to build just about anything that they can imagine. They can explore the world of Landmark, claiming territory and building materials. Landmark is also another way for gamers to make their mark in EverQuest Next. The best creations will become permanent fixtures in Next, and allow their creators to truly leave their mark in the game.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/everquest-next-landmark-brings-user-created-content-mmo-world/#!bzqPIV

Overall, EverQuest Next is a great looking MMORPG. It is looking to put control in the hands of the players, and let them control the world around them. Like I said, Next is an ambitious game, and is one to keep an eye on.

What do you think? Is EverQuest Next the best new game on the horizon? Then come vote for the Dragon Slayer Awards here! You can also check out the other nominees here.

Starbound: Dragon Slayer Awards Nominee for Best New Indie Game 2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/88q08/starbound-dragon-slayer-awards-nominee-for-best-new-indie-game-2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/88q08/starbound-dragon-slayer-awards-nominee-for-best-new-indie-game-2014 Fri, 08 Aug 2014 09:18:48 -0400 Valentina Floegel

Dragon Slayer Awards voting is still going on, who will you vote for? One of the categories available is "Best Indie Game of 2014". This is the perfect time to check out all those indie games you've been wanting to play, and vote for your favourites among the nominees! Starbound, a recent indie game receiving loads of attention, is one of the games looking for your vote.

Starbound, Chucklefish's first game, is a 2-D, entertaining sandbox adventure game where the player travels and explores different planets in a universe. You begin by escaping your home planet on a spaceship and then crash-landing on another. From there, your quest begins!

The game is very customizable, giving out over 100 materials and over 1000 in-game objects to build. By using procedural generation, the gameplay is extremely varied: planets, creatures, weapons, and more are all randomly generated according to set algorithims (procedures). Each planet is themed with its own terrain, weather, day/night cycles, etc. Due to this, the game is blessed with a massive variety of content and unique stories for each player.Starbound, being open world, gives the player freedom. You can follow the story or simply create your own. Creativity is key to Starbound. By Building, the player can create their own world. Foraging and Crafting allows the player to create items that suit their playing style (The players class will be determined by the weapons they use). You can also feel free to customize your spaceship and even play music. The amount of possibilities is enormous. Remember to set up your campfire though; dying of cold is a frequent threat in the universe of Starbound (among other reasons).

Multiplayer is very integrated in Starbound. You can play along with others competitively or cooperatively. The server you're on determines how many can play along with you. However, solo play is also just as fun since there is so much to explore.
Starbound has received two awards in 2013:
1. "Most Anticipated Game of 2013" in Indie Game Magazine
2.
"No.1 of Indie of the Year 2013" for IndieDB

These awards are quite the achievement considering the game is only in its early Beta phase. Here is what some reviews are saying:

"STARBOUND IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE NEVER-ENDING GAMES EVER"
                                                                                                  - Polygon (Rating: 9)

"The game's minutiae will be mapped out across various wikis for years to come, and many mechanics will be added and refined, but even now, Starbound is an enticing journey of discovery that reminds you just how exciting it can be to stare at a sky full of stars."
                                                                                                   - Gamespot
"Starbound's [beta is] by no means finished yet but the basics definitely work. There's already loads for you to do, regardless of whether you're trying to work through the tiers and fight all the bosses or if you just want to hop across space, moving from one planet to the next as fuel supplies allow, seeing what you can see and finding what you can find."
                                                                                                   - Eurogamer

Starbound beta has been out since December 4, 2013. It is available for $14.99 on Steam and Humblestore. At the moment it is only for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but will eventually port to consoles such as the PS4. You can read more about Starbound on the website, and scroll through the FAQ for any questions.

Since Starbound has already made a huge splash into the indie game community, it is the perfect candidate for your Dragon Slayer Award Vote!  Open world, variety, adorable graphics, unique story, and more. You can check out the other nominees here or go vote for Best New Indie Game of 2014 here.

Wil Wheaton's TableTop Nominated for Notable Machinima or Video Series - Dragon Slayer Awards 2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/8t7ad/wil-wheatons-tabletop-nominated-for-notable-machinima-or-video-series-dragon-slayer-awards-2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/8t7ad/wil-wheatons-tabletop-nominated-for-notable-machinima-or-video-series-dragon-slayer-awards-2014 Fri, 08 Aug 2014 05:43:28 -0400 Mary-Kate Wagamon

GameSkinny's sister site, Guild Launch, is hosting their third annual Dragon Slayer Awards, and they need you to choose who will win! Nominated for Notable Machinima or Video Series is a wonderfully entertaining YouTube show known as TableTop

For anyone unfamiliar with TableTop, here's what you need to know. The show is hosted by Wil Wheaton, who you might recognize from shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Big Bang Theory, or Felicia Day's web series The Guild. TableTop is co-created by Wheaton and Felicia Day, and it first premiered on Felicia Day's YouTube Channel, Geek & Sundry, when it launched in 2012.

Geek & Sundry recently hit 1,000,000 million subscribers!

During each episode, Wil Wheaton invites some of his internet-celebrity friends to play various tabletop games with him. Depending on the general length of the games, Wheaton and his friends might play 2 or 3 games in an episode, or a particularly long game might take two episodes to finish. Wheaton and friends have played a wide variety of games ranging from more family-oriented games like Dixit or Ticket to Ride, to tabletop RPGs like Dragon Age.

Other than the fantastic guests, one of the greatest things about TableTop is that it acts as an entertaining how-to-play guide to every game featured on the show. At the beginning of each episode, Wheaton introduces a game and gives a general description of how it's played. Then, as the game goes on, helpful tips and important rules are briefly explained in the context of what is currently happening.

TableTop finished its second season in February this year. A few months ago, $1,413,844 was raised for a third season through Indiegogo, greatly surpassing the original goal of $500,000.

So, why should you vote for TableTop as the most Notable Video Series this year?

Maybe because the show encourages everyone to get their friends and family together and enjoy each other's company while playing a fun game at the same time.

Maybe because the show introduces several games to people who would never have played them before. In fact, according to starlitcitadel.com, some games' sales have increased significantly after being featured on TableTop.

Or maybe, it's because of the passion Wil Wheaton and the rest of the people involved have for the show, and for sharing their love of board games with the world.

Whatever reason you may have, you can go vote for TableTop at the Dragon Slayer Awards page, right here

Slightly Impressive Nominated for Notable Machinima or Video Series - 2014 Dragon Slayer Awards https://www.gameskinny.com/m6vto/slightly-impressive-nominated-for-notable-machinima-or-video-series-2014-dragon-slayer-awards https://www.gameskinny.com/m6vto/slightly-impressive-nominated-for-notable-machinima-or-video-series-2014-dragon-slayer-awards Tue, 05 Aug 2014 19:02:44 -0400 Evan Lower

It's that time of the year again. No, not back to school time. Alright, well yeah it's that, too. But more importantly it's Dragon Slayer Awards voting time! Griffter's Slightly Impressive seems to have impressed slightly enough to land it on the ballot for Notable Machinima or Video Series, and here's why.

Maybe Griffter's web series is on the ballot because it encompasses the whole of the category. I mean, what made his channel so famous is his WoW machinima, in which Griffter and either one or two of his friends--unless this guy has some serious voice acting skills--do comedic voice-overs for a set group of recurring World of Warcraft characters.

Other than his WoW machinima, however, Griffter has a number of other series in which he simply provides comedic commentary for various games, including The Sims 3The Walking DeadOctodad, etc.

Seriously, this guy has a ton of videos up that don't get nearly the attention they deserve, especially those which he makes for Sims.

Yeah, that's a long video, but it's totally worth the watch. His off-the-cuff humor is like no other, and it's especially unlike the humor found in the other contenders in this category.

Also, he's kept this running humor going for way longer than would seem possible. His first video was on February 11, 2012, and since then he has amassed an astonishing 353 videos!

The best part about this guy? He's totally humble. Granted, he isn't exactly as famous as the guys at Rooster Teeth or Achievement Hunter, but he's on this list, isn't he? Besides, Griffter's humble demeanor made him super excited about this annual awards event.

Alright, so he's not exactly the spitting image of excitement, but that's his thing!

If you think Griffter is funny enough or unique enough to deserve your vote for Notable Machinima or Video Series, head on over to Guild Launch's voting page for the Dragon Slayer Awards and vote for him!

Destiny Nominated for Best New Game on the Horizon - Dragon Slayer Awards 2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/ulkw4/destiny-nominated-for-best-new-game-on-the-horizon-dragon-slayer-awards-2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/ulkw4/destiny-nominated-for-best-new-game-on-the-horizon-dragon-slayer-awards-2014 Tue, 05 Aug 2014 14:37:51 -0400 Evan Lower

The Dragon Slayer Awards have entered their last phase, which means it's time for you to choose the final winners in each category. Destiny has reached the final stage for Best New Game on the Horizon, and I'm going to tell you why.

If you didn't know already, Destiny is sort of a big deal. It's Bungie's first person shooter massively multiplayer online role playing game (FPSMMORPG for short), and it's currently slated to be a console exclusive. An MMO... on console. And it runs at 1080p--yes, even the Xbox One.

As horribly terrifying as "an MMO on console" probably sounds to the MMO veterans of the world, Destiny has not yet disappointed. Having been played already in Alpha and Beta forms, the game has been incredibly received. Well, it's not that incredible, given all of the hype surrounding the game.

Speaking of hype, this game's got a lot of it. Other than being featured numerous times on GameSkinny by the likes of Fathoms_4209 and others, Destiny has garnered numerous pre-release awards in the time since it went under the code name Project Tiger

Also, it's been referred to countless times as "the future of gaming." How does the competition stand a chance?

So if you think this game is deserving of all of the hype it's getting, go ahead and vote for it on the Dragon Slayer Awards voting page. And while you're at it, just vote in all of the other categories, too.

Also, check out this game's competition in the Best New Game on the Horizon at GameSkinny's landing page. An informed electorate makes for a deserving winner.

Marvel Heroes 2015 Nominated for Best Promotional Effort by a Game: 2014 Dragon Slayer Awards https://www.gameskinny.com/9tenh/marvel-heroes-2015-nominated-for-best-promotional-effort-by-a-game-2014-dragon-slayer-awards https://www.gameskinny.com/9tenh/marvel-heroes-2015-nominated-for-best-promotional-effort-by-a-game-2014-dragon-slayer-awards Tue, 05 Aug 2014 13:08:21 -0400 Evan Lower

The Dragon Slayer Awards have begun! It's this really awesome annual awards shindig that Guild Launch, our sister site, has been hosting for the past three years and it's all about you.

One of the categories is Best Promotional Effort by a Game, and an especially special game, Marvel Heroes 2015, has been nominated. Continue reading for an in-depth explanation, or go right to the voting page to cast your votes, or skip this article entirely (but that's lame).

Marvel Heroes has come a long way since its initial 2013 release. This June 4th, exactly a year after the original release, Gazillion Entertainment rebranded the game with the name Marvel Heroes 2015 in celebration of the 2014-15 season.  It's done more than just rebrand the game, though; it has performed a complete overhaul of the mechanics and gameplay, such that this new iteration has a Metascore of 80 to the first's 58.

Obviously all of this hard work had to be accompanied by a proactive promotional campaign to offset the (legitimate) criticism of the game's first incarnation.  Other than giving players daily events, a trading system in-game, and the opportunity to fight the almighty Surtur, within two weeks of announcing the game, Gazillion announced that the game would finally be making its way to the Mac.

In that same month the company made the Silver Surfer a playable character in-game, as well as hosting two separate all-night Twitch streams with the game.

The promotional effort hasn't halted since the game's first month. Gazillion continues to churn out weekly game updates, as well as continuing the monthly character additions and weekly costume additions.

On top of that Gazillion has ridden the coat-tails of this summer's blockbuster hit, Guardians of the Galaxy, releasing three of the movie's heroes as team-up characters, a new movie-themed costume for Rocket Raccoon, and Star-Lord as a playable character.

So if you think that all of this qualifies Marvel Heroes's promotional effort as what one might call "the best," head on over to Guild Launch's Dragon Slayer page and cast your vote. Or if you'd like to better inform your vote (like a responsible member of the electorate), go to GameSkinny's landing page for Best Promotional Effort by a Game to see all of this category's contenders.

League of Legends Nominated for Most Passionate Fan Base - Dragon Slayer Awards 2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/q8s66/league-of-legends-nominated-for-most-passionate-fan-base-dragon-slayer-awards-2014 https://www.gameskinny.com/q8s66/league-of-legends-nominated-for-most-passionate-fan-base-dragon-slayer-awards-2014 Mon, 04 Aug 2014 20:25:39 -0400 Travis McGee

It's time again this year for the Guild Launch Dragon Slayer Awards, and our sister site brings us an impressive list of nominees for Most Passionate Fan Base. If you're anything like me, choosing just one game's fan base for this award is no easy task. In order to make that choice easier, let me take a moment to show why League of Legends deserves your consideration this year.

League of Legends was developed and is maintained by Riot Games, has been around since October of 2009, and was heavily inspired by the Defense of the Ancients mod for Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. The game has competed often with World of Warcraft in terms of active players with a population of regular players numbering in the tens of millions monthly.

League is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game that is free to play with microtransactions to buy skins for champions and unlock extra champs faster. Gameplay-wise, players control a single champion and use strategy and teamwork to overcome an opposing team of champions and destroy an objective within their heavily fortified base while protecting an objective within their own. Matches are fast-paced and require quick reflexes, knowledge of each champion and their abilities, and a great deal of strategy. The game boasts one of the largest eSports communities in the gaming industry due to the level of skill, accuracy, and precision required to go pro.

That's all the statistics out of the way, but why the nomination for most passionate fan base?

League of Legends Fans Made a Band - Pentakill

Many games can boast about how many players they have, but how many can claim that its fans made a heavy metal band and published an album? That's right. The band Pentakill is comprised of 5 League of Legends fans who wanted to show their devotion to the game by writing and performing songs to display its brutal, Metal aspects.

These fans have done concerts and live shows at Gamescom, published their own album - "Smite and Ignite" - and even created a website with a fictional history for each bandmember.

Now, Pentakill - like all fans - takes their art very seriously. The topics of their songs range from the lore of characters to the brutality that items like "Deathfire Grasp" bring to the game once a champ picks them up. Their songs are beloved amongst the fandom because not only do they sing about the game but also about playing the game.

These fans are all about showing how hard League of Legends rocks!

League of Legends Fan Artists

Now, it might actually be harder to find a game that doesn't have fan artists, but League of Legends' sheer volume of fan art is almost unbelievable. For the almost 5 years the game has been out fan art has been made and posted for characters, bots, and even the developers at Riot.

Seriously, there's an official tumblr for League fan art, a reddit page run by Riot devoted to fan art, and the official game site has a section for fan art. Heck, part of the reason the game's fans publish so much art is because of how Riot encourages its fan base and occasionally whips them into a frenzy.

The developers even hosted a YouTube show called "Summoner Showcase" until September 2013 where Riot devs would showcase various pieces of fan art.

One thing that distinguishes League of Legends' fan art from other games, though, is how Riot really encourages fans to show off their talents - whatever they may be. Throughout all the forums linked above you can find not only drawings and paintings but cosplay, cooking, gifs, sculpture, and much more. If a League fan has a skill you can almost bet that it has been used to show their adoration of the game.

League of Legends Cosplay

Not only does League of Legends encourage and inspire an incredible amount of art from its fans, but many fan artists have gotten the courage to become full-time artists and graphic designers because of the support and encouragement they received from the developers and their fellow fans.

So we just tackled art above, but I wanted to take a moment to really highlight this aspect of fan art. League of Legends has inspired more cosplay in less than five years than almost any other game. Not only that, but League cosplay is some of the most immediately and easily recognizable at conventions.

This area - possibly more than any other - is really where the fandom shows its passion. Thousands of gamers don the garb of their favorite champion at conventions around the world year after year.

Cosplay has brought the fans closer together as a community than anything else, and more than one set of lifelong friends was made at a convention when a cosplayed Jinx ran into a fan dressed as Vi.

The sheer hours that these fans put into their costumes is astounding! Some costumes can take months to put together properly, but the fans do it time and again to show their love for League of Legends and their favorite champs.

Again, I'm not saying that there aren't great cosplayers for other games, but the sheer volume of League cosplay you can find with just a simple google search is a major indicator at how vast the game's fan base really is - and how passionate each player is about the champions. It helps, of course, that Riot has made a game with so many options to choose from to cosplay.

Wow!... So How Do I Vote?

If you like what you've seen so far and think this fan base is as crazy and passionate as we do what are you waiting for? You can vote for League of Legends as 2014's Dragon Slayer Award Winner for Most Passionate Fan Base here.

What would any game be without a devoted fan base willing to show its love and appreciation in art, letter, and demonstration?

From awesome cosplay to beautiful works of art. From conventions to million-dollar tournaments. From the passionate individual fan to entire communities here are your Dragon Slayer Award Nominees for Most Passionate Fan Base.

  • AdventureQuest Worlds
  • DotA 2
  • League of Legends
  • Lord of the Rings Online
  • Marvel Heroes
  • World of Warcraft

What Inspires a Fan Base to be Passionate?

We all play games because we enjoy them, and if you ask 10 different gamers what they like about the games they play you're bound to get 10 different answers.

For some, loyalty plays a big part in their fandom - that is, the both the loyalty they've shown a game over a long span of time and the loyalty the game's developers have shown them. Typically this is found most often in long-running games like World of Warcraft or League of Legends because these fans have spent large portions of their life enjoying the game and supporting it.

For others a game's community is the reason for their passion. Games introduce us to new friends and there isn't a game out there without its own communities. For these fans, the game that inspired such a following is secondary to the communities inspired by it. A good example of how community impassions a fan can be found in Marvel Heroes where the game's communities overlap with the fan communities of Marvel Comics.

Sometimes what impassions a fan can really only be described as love. The love for the story, art, mechanics, lore or even overall design of a game can really be all a fan base needs to want to show their passion and appreciation. All of the nominees obviously fall under this category as much as the two above, and there are surely many other reasons gamers become passionate fans of the games they play. But, love is at the heart of it all.

How Do Fan Bases Show Their Passion?

Fans show their passion any way they can. Artists draw and paint. Writers write novels, short stories, and poetry. Actors act in their own videos based off the game they love. The list actually goes on and on.

The biggest way a fan base shows their passion is through each individual fan turning their own unique skills and talents towards showing their appreciation. This often results in contributions from the fan base that get incorporated into the game in some way.

Beautiful cosplay, amazing art, wonderful writing, and even viral videos are just a few of the ways that a fan base can show their passion for the game they love. There are far too many ways just to list in one place, but what matters most is that whatever they do the most passionate fan base needs to be completely over the top.

So...How Do I Know Who to Vote For?

This one's easy! Either cast your vote for the nominee that you're the most a fan of or the nominee who you feel has had the most awesome and unforgettable demonstration of their passion as a fan.

Don't waste any time. You can cast your vote here, and don't forget to check out the other categories for Dragon Slayer Awards, too!

Hearthstone Nominated for 'Best Promotional Effort by a Game' for 2014 Dragon Slayer Awards https://www.gameskinny.com/qnxws/hearthstone-nominated-for-best-promotional-effort-by-a-game-for-2014-dragon-slayer-awards https://www.gameskinny.com/qnxws/hearthstone-nominated-for-best-promotional-effort-by-a-game-for-2014-dragon-slayer-awards Mon, 04 Aug 2014 09:58:09 -0400 PencilPusha

Blizzard Entertainment's Hearthstone, an interactive digital collectible card game, is in the running for a Dragon Slayer Award.

What's the Dragon Slayer Award?

It's an annual celebration of different aspects of gaming, like developers (major and indie), celebrities (like Wil Wheaton) and, of course, games! It's put together by Guild Launch, Game Skinny's partner-in-crime of sorts. So let's dive into Hearthstone and see exactly what Blizzard Entertainment has done to promote it lately.

Having just released Hearthstone: Curse of Naxxramas a few weeks ago, Blizzard Entertainment is doing a good job picking up players for their catchy game.

On the Hearthstone official website, they're currently promoting the 2014 Hearthstone World Championship that will be held at the BlizzCon in November for a grand prize of $250,000! Who doesn't want to win a quarter of a million dollars for playing a video game?

In addition to the World Championship news, Blizzard Entertainment has also posted Hearthstone content announcing the start of the fifth Ranked Play Season, the new release of another 'wing' of Naxxramas called the 'Plague Quarter', a charity event for St. Jude called Play Live, and San Diego Comic-Con coverage, among other things.

There's competition. There's new content being released weekly. There are opportunities to play the game while raising money for a noble cause. There's a presence at big gaming events.

Sounds like Blizzard Entertainment knows what they're doing when it comes to promoting Hearthstone to the max!

On their Facebook page, Hearthstone is promoting content such as gameplay videos, podcasts, news shows, pictures of new cards or cards in development, patch notes, fireside gatherings and more. The patch notes simply tell the Hearthstone community that certain bugs found in-game are resolved, while the fireside gatherings are when gamers get together in mass quantities and play Hearthstone together in their communities.

That's only part of the social media spectrum.

On their Twitter page, Hearthstone is raving about 'weekly featured Twitch streamers', 'Plays of the Week', Hearthstone events coming up at Pax Prime, online tournaments and more. The weekly features on Twitch streamers include exclusive interviews with expert players who manage to stand out among the crowd. The plays of the week include submissions that players send in to get selected and featured in a YouTube video and later retweeted on the Hearthstone official Twitter page.

Pax Prime will be holding a 'final showdown' competition on-stage for the CCG and the collegiate winners will walk away with scholarships! Online tournaments are announced via social media and are held through certain servers. The winner receives money that's useful only on the Blizzard Entertainment website. Cool, right?

If you'd like to learn more about this trendy CCG, visit their official website. If you think Hearthstone deserves the Dragon Slayer Award for 'Best Promotional Effort by a Game', go to GuildLaunch.com and vote now.

Dragon Slayer Award Nominees: Most Epic Twitch Streamer https://www.gameskinny.com/t17e4/dragon-slayer-award-nominees-most-epic-twitch-streamer https://www.gameskinny.com/t17e4/dragon-slayer-award-nominees-most-epic-twitch-streamer Sun, 03 Aug 2014 12:19:35 -0400 Yasmin Curren

The Dragon Slayer Awards are back, allowing you to have your say on what and who are the gems of the gaming world. The awards this year focus mainly on games, comics, communities, and even gaming personalities! The Internet has developed into a place where people can not only play games but also enjoy watching others play professionally for money, how cool! But the big question is:

Who is the Most Epic Twitch Streamer of Them All?

  • CohhCarnage
  • PhantomL0rd
  • Ellohime
  • Syndicate
  • KaceyTron
  • TrumpSC

I Live Under a Rock... What is Twitch?

rockTwitch.tv has become a hugely successful video streaming platform dedicated to all those who love gaming! The website has become a host to many esports events, a creative outlet for artists who are inspired by games, but most commonly Twitch is home to thousands of gameplay streamers from around the world! These people live stream, sometimes throughout the entire day, gaining money from adverts and paid subscriptions if they are entertaining enough.

What Makes These Twitch Streamers so Special?

We all love playing games, so playing professionally every day sounds like a dream come true! But there is still a certain amount of skill involved besides being good at playing games. How entertaining are you while playing a game? Sure, the first half an hour, or even hour, you might be energetic and enthusiastic; but these streamers have to make sure to stay entertaining for their viewers for up to 8 hours (even longer for some hard-core streamers!) It must be challenging when you are worrying about how your viewers see you while trying to immerse yourself in the game.

These streamers aren't only well-versed in gameplay, they also know their stuff when it comes to social media. It's not just luck that they are one of the most popular streamers out of the thousands who do it globally! They know how to push themselves and their content into the public eye by constantly interacting with their viewers, using social media platforms to advertise their streams, and I'm sure many other tactics that I, as non-streamer, wouldn't know.

Why Watch Other People Play Games on Twitch?

Let's face it, 'Let's Players' have been around for a few years, gaining some attention. PewDiePie is a popular and prime example of this, uploading gameplay videos to YouTube regularly. But Twitch offers us a more immersive way of sharing gameplay with each other. Through Twitch, the viewers don't get to miss a second of gameplay, therefore we get to see the player and game for exactly what they are, as there is no editing or cutting involved.

twitch gameplayWith Twitch's chat box, the viewers get to finally feel involved in the content that they are watching, giving advice to the streamer, for example; "Hey, dummy! You missed that chest to your right!" The streamer can see that comment and go to check out the chest! It's like when you yell at your TV when a character hears and odd noise and is about to follow it into a shady looking basement, but instead they listen to you and say "Oh gosh, thank you, I could have gotten mauled to death down there if it wasn't for you!" So, in a way, the viewers get to actually have input on the gameplay! Or they could just get to know what everyone's favourite colour is within the chat, either way they get to communicate while they watch, which forms some sort of community around the Twitch streamer. This makes watching a person through a screen a lot more entertaining!

Let's Get Voting!

So now that you know all there is to know about these hard-working Twitch Streamers, it's time to make a decision. The awards are being held on Guild Launch, GameSkinny's sister site. Who do you think deserves to win 'Most Epic Twitch Streamer' of 2014?
