Through the controversy and flip-flopping, Apple learned a lesson and re-added Ultimate General: Gettysburg after they hastily removed it earlier this week.

Ultimate General: Gettysburg is a historically-based strategy game that features the Confederate flag, as it revists one of the most notable battles of the Civil War. Following a racially-charged shooting in a Charleston church, South Carolina residents have demanded that the Confederate flag be taken down from their state's capitol building. In the wake of controversy over what the flag symbolizes, many national retailers and online markets have removed all stock with Confederate branding material.

Apple was one of those markets, and it removed all games featuring the flag from the App Store. However, since the removal of Ultimate General: Gettysburg, the game has soared to the height of popularity on Steam, where users have expressed their fondness of this historically accurate title. The game hit the front page and broke into Steam's top 50 games.

Apple, you screwed up

This giant fuss on the Apple iOS App Store has given many consumers a negative opinion about the company, and they've called Apple out on its careless and hasty decision. The biggest concern regarding the game's removal was that Apple initially claimed it wouldn't be removing games in which the flag's use was historical:

"Apps containing references or commentary about a religious, cultural or ethnic group that are defamatory, offensive, mean-spirited or likely to expose the targeted group to harm or violence will be rejected."

"We have removed apps from the App Store that use the Confederate flag in offensive or mean-spirited ways, which is in violation of our guidelines. We are not removing apps that display the Confederate flag for educational or historical uses." - Official Apple Statement

The developer at Game Labs decided to abide by Apple's wishes while sticking to their guns on keeping historical accuracy a priority over profit. After tireless phone calls, they've been able to discuss the situation with Apple and they're back on the App Store, and Ultimate General: Gettysburg is left unchanged.

Let's hope in the future that Apple will think more clearly about what games are "mean-spirited and offensive", and which ones are accurately representing a turning point in American History.

Apple Removes Games over Confederate Flag Usage Thu, 25 Jun 2015 15:24:16 -0400 Courtney Gamache

A few games have been pulled from the iOS App Store after the controversy over the Confederate Flag in the United States has soared to new heights.

Following the tragic shooting of nine people in Charleston, SC earlier this week, what started as a request for removal of the Confederate flag from South Carolina's capitol building turned a this nation-wide movement to strip Confederacy symbols from all public places - including parks, buildings, license plates, shopping sites, retail stores, and now the App Store.

What games have been removed?

So far there, are only a few games removed from the iOS App Store due to the Confederacy images used within the games. Included in this removal are:

Ultimate General: Gettysburg

Civil War: 1862

Civil War: 1863

Civil War: 1864

Maxim Zasof of Game Labs, the deveolpers behind Ultimate General: Gettysburg released a statement to TouchArcade expressing their sympathy to the removal as well as plans for the future.

"We accept Apple's decision and understand that this is a sensitive issue for the American Nation. We wanted our game to be the most accurate, historical, playable reference of the Battle of Gettysburg. All historical commanders, unit composition and weaponry, key geographical locations to the smallest streams or farms are recreated in our game's battlefield.

Spielberg’s Schindler's List did not try to amend his movie to look more comfortable. The historical "Gettysburg" movie (1993) is still on iTunes. We believe that all historical art forms: books, movies, or games such as ours, help to learn and understand history, depicting events as they were. True stories are more important to us than money.

Therefore we are not going to amend the game's content and Ultimate General: Gettysburg will no longer be available on AppStore. We really hope that Apple’s decision will achieve the desired results. We can’t change history, but we can change the future."

The Confederate Flag in History

Although the Confederate flag represents a chunk of American history involving the Civil War,  its true meaning has always been a matter of controversy. Some Americans view the flag as a symbol of Southern Heritage, while other Americans view it as a racist symbol that hearkens back to the era of slavery.

It is unknown if more games will be removed from the iOS App Store, and if the games removed will sacrifice historical accuracy in order to remove the confederate imagery from their games and possibly return to the App Store.
