Fans of the anime series Ghost in The Shell got exciting news back in September that their beloved franchise was receiving a free-to-play online shooter. The game was set to be available on Steam and Nexon; however, it was unknown when fans could dive into the experience.

Well today we know. On December 14th, players will be able to “take to the streets of a futuristic Japan as Elite Section 9 Operatives” in an Early Access version of the game.

So you want to be part of the Early Access?

You can purchase these packs through Steam or the Nexon launcher as well. Ghost in The Shell: First Assault Online is expected to make a full release on Early 2016.

Back in late 2012, all rights to the critically-acclaimed anime by Masamune Shirow and his manga publisher Kodansha were secured by Nexon.

At the time, the Nexon CEO, Seungwoo Choi gave the following statement:

"We are very pleased to have given the opportunity to work with Kodansha in the development of games for the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex franchise, which is highly popular worldwide.

We will add Nexon’s wide-ranging experiences and know-how to the original creation in order to develop high quality games to meet the expectations of all its fans.”

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Online CBT now live Fri, 02 Oct 2015 10:00:39 -0400 Ashley Shankle

Did anyone really expect Nexon to publish a Ghost in the Shell MMOFPS? Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Online: First Assault (that's a mouthful) was first announced a couple years ago, and the game had all but fallen off the radar. The game is so far off the radar that publisher Nexon launched closed beta signups two weeks ago without much of a peep.

Despite the game's clear connection to Ghost in the Shell and the series' international acclaim, including featuring characters from the series like the Major, Nexon is leaning toward referring to the game simply as First Assault.

First Assault is an MMOFPS featuring characters and abilities from the Ghost in the Shell series, including augmenting skills with other players. Not much else is known, since the first closed beta launched yesterday. I personally am awaiting my beta key.

If the trailer is to believed, First Assault doesn't look much out of the ordinary in terms of modern FPS titles. We'll have to see just how well it does the series justice as the first closed beta pushes on, and hope there's more to be excited for than what's shown in the trailer. You can still sign up for CBT on the official site if you're just as curious as I am.

Microsoft Teams Up With Ghost in the Shell in Japan Wed, 05 Jun 2013 12:24:56 -0400 GameSkinny Staff

New Ghost in the Shell anime features Microsoft Surface RT

A brand new Ghost in the Shell anime short is out from Surface Japan. The short is combination of a trailer and a commercial. A trailer for the upcoming Ghost in the Shell series titled Arise and a commercial for Microsoft’s new Surface RT tablet. The animations are made by Production I.G. and are gorgeous.

Fortunately, the 3-minute clip has no dialogue so don’t worry about subtitles.

Microsoft is building steam in Japan for the Xbox One

The clip and the product placement in the series are part of a huge promotional effort for Microsoft in Japan. Microsoft has never done well in Japan; the Xbox has especially had trouble competing with both Nintendo and Playstation. My guess is that the marketers at Microsoft are doing everything they possibly can to build the brand for the imminent Xbox One release.

If Ghost in the Shell Arise is good and can show Microsoft in a positive light, it would be huge. Ghost in the Shell is one of the most beloved anime series both in Japan and around the world. We’ll see if Microsoft has what it takes to gain a Japanese following.

Ghost in the Shell: Arise

The first four 50-minute episodes of Arise are scheduled to release in Japan this month and will feature the Surface RT as a primary tech tool for everyone’s favorite sci-fi cyberpunk agents. The clip shows a newly remodeled Major Kusanagi and the old standbys of the series.

Why does the Surface RT encourage people to constantly be jumping out windows, off buildings, and through glass? I have no idea, but that happens about 4 times in this 3-minute clip.

Have thoughts about Arise? Will Microsoft actually be able to succeed in Japan? Let us know in the comments below!

Nexon Creating Ghost in the Shell Game Mon, 17 Dec 2012 03:46:32 -0500 Ashley Shankle

Like Ghost in the Shell? I bet you do!

Like Nexon? Probably not.

Too bad!

Because they've gotten the rights from Kodansha to develop a game based on Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

There are no details on what exactly the game is to be, aside from the fact that it will be online. Considering the developer will be Nexon, it's likely to be an MMORPG.

The press release states that the game will be based around Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, GitS: SAC 2nd GIG, and GitS: Solid State Society. This is pretty exciting news as this will be the first game based on the series since the original Playstation game, which was based on the first movie.

We won't be seeing the game for quite some time since Nexon just got the rights a few days ago, but it will certainly be interesting to see how they handle making Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex into an MMORPG -- and whether or not it will be good enough to warrant playing.

Lots of Tachikoma, please.
