Cosplaying is a great experience. Wearing a costume from a game that you love at conventions, and the pride of wearing the same outfit as a beloved character. Some people enjoy crafting their own costume, but when there is so much able to purchase online, it can be a great idea to purchase the costume in advance.

\n

There is so much choice, costumes or accessories, such as armour and weapons too. But it is about quality items and their accuracy that is most important, as this creates the highest level of character immersion for the wearer.

\n

But what are the best items out there? Luckily, we've searched the web for the best cosplay items out there. Check them out, not just for your cosplay loving friend, but maybe it inspires you to wear cosplay too.

Gamer with cerebral palsy received a wonderful gift from Sony employee https://www.gameskinny.com/zuwdh/gamer-with-cerebral-palsy-received-a-wonderful-gift-from-sony-employee https://www.gameskinny.com/zuwdh/gamer-with-cerebral-palsy-received-a-wonderful-gift-from-sony-employee Mon, 04 Apr 2016 04:48:01 -0400 Lad Johnson

Peter Byrne, a gamer from Jersey, received a special gift when he emailed Sony about his problems with their DualShock 4 Controller. After alerting Sony about his cerebral palsy making it difficult to use the controller, his problem was taken seriously by the responding employee. He received a specially modded controller to make it easier to use with his disability.

Peter Byrne's disability makes it difficult to play games like zClancy's The Division. These games use the controller's touch pad to bring up maps and menus. His hands would hit the button quite often, causing him trouble while he tried to play. Frustrated, he contacted Sony for whatever help they could provide. He never imagined he'd get a custom controller with the option to turn the touchpad off.

Alex Nawabi, a PlayStation employee, felt Byrne's plea for help. Nawabi told Byrne he could find a solution to the problem. Using personal resources and time off work, he built a custom controller that disabled the touchpad and added an extra button to the controller. He even built a second one in case the first one gets damaged.

The fact that an updated design alienated a gamer from Sony hit home with Nawabi. The simple fix of adding a new button to the controller solved the problem, so Byrne can game comfortably now. He hopes that more gaming companies will realize that disabled people are also gamers. With the industry expanding, a one size fits all approach won't always work.

The Best Gifts You Got as a Kid Gamer in the '90s https://www.gameskinny.com/vvmec/the-best-gifts-you-got-as-a-kid-gamer-in-the-90s https://www.gameskinny.com/vvmec/the-best-gifts-you-got-as-a-kid-gamer-in-the-90s Wed, 09 Dec 2015 21:05:48 -0500 Venisia Gonzalez

When we think back to the 90s, some remember the Gulf War, the fall of the Soviet Union, cloned sheep, the Oklahoma City and Olympic Park bombings, the OJ Simpson ordeal, and Clinton. I remember trying not to get a blister on my hand while playing Mario Party.

So when it comes to thinking about the past, there's nothing like gaming nostalgia to get me excited. These console and game launches were paving the road to what we now play today. And when the holidays rolled around, these were the gifts we were hoping to find under our trees.

Game Boy Color

We 90s kids loved playing video games, and nothing made doing that quite as easy as a handheld. The Nintendo Game Boy Color (GBC) released in November 1998 and featured a color screen unlike its 1989 predecessor. Nintendo dominated the market with record sales across Japan, North America, and Europe.

This 8-bit baby was backwards compatible and cost $69.99 with launch titles like:

  • Pocket Bomberman
  • Wario Land II
  • Tetris DX

The Game Boy Color was available in:

  • Kiwi
  • Berry
  • Grape
  • Teal
  • Dandelion

You were one of the coolest kids on the block to own one. And one of the luckiest on those long car trips to Six Flags: Great Adventure in New Jersey.

Kids today have no idea how lucky they are to have the built-in lighting, speakers, and phenomenal graphics that they do.

I know you remember all the gadgets we had to get and the backpack to carry it all in.

PlayStation

Sony Computer Entertainment entered the market with their first console in 1994 in Japan and 1995 in North America. It cost $299.99, and competed against Nintendo and Sega. The idea was originally a joint venture between Nintendo and Sony.

It launched with titles like:
  • Rayman
  • Air Combat
  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Philosoma
  • Ridge Racer

The PlayStation became known for its DualShock controller (1997/98), 3D graphics, and the fact that it used a CD-ROM instead of a cartridge. Everyone wanted this console thanks to the graphics. The DualShock controller also introduced the vibration we now know today. Sony was changing the world of gaming forever with this system.

Super Nintendo

The Super NES or SNES was a 16-bit console that launched in North America in 1991 for $199.99. This was Nintendo's second console release during its "console war against Sega." Where Nintendo created the first arcade-to-console conversion with Capcom's Street Fighter II.

Launch titles available were:
  • Super Mario World
  • Sim City
  • Pilotwings
  • F-Zero
  • Gradius III
Biggest Selling Games on SNES:
  • Super Mario World
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
  • Super Mario Kart

Nintendo 64

The N64 was the successor to the SNES in 1996, also costing $199.99. The number stood for the 64-bit CPU. It was fast, had 3D graphics and great gameplay; but was criticized for its lack of games.

It launched with these titles:
  • Super Mario 64
  • Pilotwings 64
  • Saikyō Habu Shōgi (Japan only)
Most acclaimed games:
  • Super Mario 64
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • GoldenEye 007
  • Conker's Bad Fur Day
  • Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Super Smash Bros
  • Perfect Dark

This console handled 3D graphics much cleaner, but its games were what nailed it for many of us.

Sega Dreamcast

The Sega Dreamcast launched in 1999 for $199.99. It was much more successful than its predecessor, the Sega Saturn. This CD-ROM console displayed both 2D and 3D graphics. It also had 19 titles available for the North America launch.

These launch titles were:
  • Soul Calibur
  • NFL 2K
  • Sonic Adventure
  • AeroWings
  • Airforce Delta
  • Blue Stinger
  • CART Flag to Flag
  • Expendable
  • The House of the Dead 2
  • Hydro Thunder
  • Monaco Grand Prix
  • Mortal Kombat Gold
  • NFL Blitz 2000
  • Pen Pen Trilcelon
  • Power Stone
  • Ready 2 Rumble Boxing
  • TNN Motorsports HardCore Heat
  • Tokyo Xtreme Racer
  • Trickstyle

Playing Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast was a lot of fun. It was also the first all-3D platform for a Sonic the Hedgehog game. That was huge!

Pokémon Red and Blue Versions

Pokémon Red and Blue are both RPGs, available for the Nintendo Game Boy. They were a third-person, overhead perspective, and had three basic screens:

  • Overworld: player navigates the main character
  • Side-view battle screen
  • Menu interface: player configures their Pokémon, items, or settings

In these games you battled for Pokémon. It took place in Kanto, featured 151 various species of Pokémon in different habitats, towns, and cities. It had single-player and multiplayer capabilities.

Players could also trade Pokémon with the use of a Game Link Cable between two Game Boys. Players loved this feature. Even for the 90s, it's very clear how popular Pokémon has remained even today.

Doom

Everyone knows the name Doom. It's so popular that MythBusters did a Video Game Special and had an episode around the gaming myth. ID Software's 1993 FPS was a great survival-horror game and still is. From PC to console, Doom has been a hit for gamers.

Other titles in the series:
  • The Ultimate Doom (1995)
  • Doom II: Hell on Earth (1994)
  • Master Levels for Doom II (1995)
  • Doom 3 (2004)
  • Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil (2005)
  • Doom 3 BFG Edition (2012)
  • Doom (2016)
Spin-off Titles:
  • Final Doom (1996)
  • Doom 64 (1997)
  • Doom RPG (2005)
  • Doom Resurrection (2009)
  • Doom II RPG (2009)
  • DoomRL (2013)

In Doom, you fought the demons and the undead of hell as a space marine. The BFG (aka Big F*****g Gun) was a highly discussed weapon in the game. It even received a proper nod in the 2005 film starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.

I cannot properly explain why we love this game. Shooting your way through the hordes and finding your way throughout the mazes in the dark was sheer heaven.

Donkey Kong Country

This is the second game that made the SNES a huge hit in the 16-bit generation. Rare brought us to Donkey Kong Island in 1994. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, his nephew, had to recover their stolen bananas from King K. Rool and the Kremlings.

It was a fun platformer and side-scroller. Each level had different tasks to overcome and was themed. Players could switch between characters, and you had six lives.

Mortal Kombat II

This arcade hit by Midway Games was the ultimate competitive fighting game. From PC to console, Mortal Kombat's popularity has risen to see itself now on the current gen. There is nothing like performing a "Fatality" against your buddies. The shriek of defeat and delight were moments to cherish.

Mortal Kombat II introduced Kung Lao, Mileena, and Baraka to the series. It featured its existing characters battling it out against the forces of Shao Kahn. It also improved on some gameplay features:

  • Crouching Punch
  • Roundhouse Kick
  • Turnaround Kick
  • Improved Combos
  • New Special Moves
  • Multiple Fatalities
    • Stage-specific Fatalities
  • Non-lethal Finishing Moves
    • Babalities
    • Friendships

Mortal Kombat II was definitely a fun competitive fighting game for players of the original MK.

Battletoads

Please tell me you remember Battletoads. This 1991 beat 'em up game by Rare featured characters like Rash, Zitz, and Pimple. (Yes, you read that correctly.) The Dark Queen was the Gothic equivalent to "Jessica Rabbit." Your mission was to rescue Pimple and Princess Angelica from the Dark Queen.

The series was a mock of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in that these were fighting toads. The series was known for its difficult levels like Turbo Tunnel that were cause for broken controllers. The objective of this level was to navigate your toad on a speeder while trying to jump from ramp-to-ramp and avoid hitting the walls. You had to memorize the ramps, walls, jumps, and turns to avoid disaster.

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back was a great platform game by Naughty Dog for PlayStation in 1997. This orange guy was fun to play just like Sonic.

Crash was abducted by Doctor Neo Cortex and you had to collect 25 crystals. Each "Warp Room" led to different levels where you navigated Crash through the various obstacles in order to collect the crystals. In between getting to the next Warp Room, you had to defeat a boss before you gained access. Bonus paths led to secret levels. The jump and landing were heavily influenced by the Mario games.

It was a hilarious cartoon game that lacked cutscenes, had great music, and beautiful graphics. Most importantly, Crash Bandicoot 2 was pure fun and led to many other games in the series.

What was your must-have gaming gift in the 90s?

Video games are a wonderful way to tell stories and create memorable experiences; there’s nothing quite like a well-crafted yarn in a digital realm to capture your imagination. However, as much as I enjoy playing games, there is another past time I enjoy at the same level or more so than I enjoy video games: reading. While an excellent game narrative can transport you to fantastical worlds, there is nothing quite like reading an utterly captivating book and becoming lost in its world as your imagination brings it to life.

This is a list of books for the gamer in your life. Some are aimed more at children, and some will be aimed more at adults. However, gamers of all ages should be able to find something enjoyable here. Who knows? They might just become so enthralled in some of these tales they’ll forget about the games, for a short time anyway.

This list is split in three: first, we'll look at books based on popular video game franchises; second, we'll look at books that inspired video games; third, we'll look at books that are not game-related but are likely to appeal to gamers.

Books based on video game series

Halo series

The Halo series is a science-fiction shooter series that has been running since 2001 with no signs of slowing down. Halo made waves for having a far-reaching and ambitious story as compared to most other shooters of its time. Given this emphasis on narrative in the series, book adaptations were inevitable. There are several entries in the series with only one book, Halo: The Flood, being an adaptation of a game’s story while the rest expand upon the Halo universe. Fans of the series will undoubtedly hungrily devour more information on their beloved Master Chief, and the struggles humanity face in this universe.

A Parent’s Take

The Halo series has been rated M for Mature, with the exception of the recent Halo 5: Guardians and the spin-off Halo Wars. The series is without major gore, and players only encounter mild profanities such as “damn.” In some books, there is some adult content like violence and some scattered strong profanity, but not an overabundance - and rarely more than the games do. I doubt the other books have much problematic content, but the ones we've reviewed were pretty much fine.

Notable Titles

Warcraft series

The Warcraft franchise has changed quite a bit over the years. What started as a strategy game evolved into an MMO juggernaut that has continually dwarfed the competition for over ten years. The games are known for their strong narratives and memorable characters that fans have grown to love over several games. The books for this franchise are unique compared to other game adaptations. One series follows the Warcraft strategy series while the other books deal with the ever-popular World of Warcraft. With nearly twenty novels, there are plenty of choices for Alliance and Horde alike.

A Parent’s Take

All of the games in the Warcraft universe are rated T. There is your typical fantasy violence, some mild cursing, and various minor offenses. Otherwise, expect some well-written fantasy narratives!

Notable Titles

There are countless other books based on games; far too many to mention here. For those interested, more exhaustive lists can be found here and here. Now onto our next category!

Books that inspired games

The Witcher series

The Witcher is a series of action-role-playing games set on delivering a mature experience for older players. The third entry in the series launched in early 2015 to much acclaim. The games are based on a series of fantasy novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. With the release of the first The Witcher title, players outside of Poland clamored for a translation, which came not long after the game’s release. Any fans of the games or dark fantasy, in general, should find plenty to enjoy here.

A Parent’s Take

The Witcher games are rated M for good reason. Gore, mutilating monsters and humans alike, copious amounts of harsh language along with plenty of sexual innuendos, sexual situations, and even digital nudity await those who plunge into Geralt’s dark world. These games are most certainly not aimed at the kiddos. If your kid has played the games, don't expect much more to shock them as the books are aimed at the same older audiences as the games are.

Notable Titles
Metro 2033

Metro 2033 is a Russian post-apocalyptic novel that finds the remnants of humanity fighting for survival in the ruined metro (subway) tunnels underground after a nuclear war decimated the surface of Earth. Humans wage war against radiation, harsh environments, mutated monstrosities, fellow humans, and other impediments in this unforgiving world.

An eponymous game based on the novel released in 2010 with a sequel that followed in 2013. The novel has since spawned an official sequel along with giving birth to a book franchise that the original author, Dmitry Glukhovsky, has overseen.

A Parent’s Take

Both of the Metro games are rated M. The games have some intense violence against human and inhuman enemies, plenty of language, and the last title, Metro: Last Light, even had some digital nudity. Like The Witcher, expect the books to be similar in content.

Notable Titles
Alamut

The Assassin’s Creed series has several inspirations, but this 1938 novel by Vladimir Bartol was possibly been one the biggest influences on the game. The plot follows Ibn Tahir, a young soldier who joins a garrison held by the Ismalis at a fortress named Alamut. The fortress is led by the charismatic Hassan, who may or may not be deceiving his troops to manipulate them. Tahir is sent to assassinate a vizier who reveals Hassan has been deceiving his troops (sound familiar yet?).  Tahir confronts his leader who reveals his life motto: “Nothing is an absolute reality, all is permitted.” Disillusioned Tahir is sent on a global odyssey while Hassan attempts to cultivate his power.

A Parent’s Take

Most of the games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise have been rated M, usually for violence, some vulgar language, and blood. As this novel was written in 1938, it doesn't have much that will shock young adult readers but the themes may be a bit much for some.

Books gamers will like (but are not directly related to gaming)

Artemis Fowl series

Artemis Fowl follows the exploits of Artemis Fowl, who just so happens to be a genius and world-renowned criminal at the age of twelve. Young Artemis discovers fairies do exist and seeks to capture one in order to obtain a lucrative ransom. What follows is a series of misadventures for readers young and old alike.

As the series goes on, the characters grow and experience major trauma. While the later entries weren’t quite as strong as the earlier ones, I wholeheartedly recommend this series to everyone. This is one of those rare series that may be aimed at younger audiences, but contains plenty of meaty content for older readers as well. I have read the entire series at least three times now, and I cannot wait until my daughter is old enough for me to share these with her.

A Parent’s Take

The series has plenty of action, though nothing ever gets bloody and characters rarely die. There is plenty of swearing in the fairy tongue (which can’t be translated due to how offensive the words are) and “damn” may be used twice over the entire series. There is some crude humor with one character’s abilities revolving around his flatulence, but it is never gross or over the top. There shouldn’t be too much here to find fault with.

Also, if you’re a fan of audiobooks, I cannot recommend these enough. The reader is one of the best I have ever heard and manages to do a distinct voice for each character on top of a great narration.

Notable Titles
The Old Kingdom series

Garth Nix may be more known to modern readers as the author of the Keys to the Kingdom series, but I want to shine a spotlight on his under appreciated The Old Kingdom series. The series follows a young girl named Sabriel, who goes looking for her father after receiving a strange message from one of his undead servants. Sabriel’s father is known as “Abhorsen,” a magician who fights necromancers and undead creatures in an attempt to keep peace in the kingdom. An old evil is manipulating events and threatens to awake, and it’s up to Sabriel and her talking, surly cat companion to find her father and stop the evil.

A Parent’s Take

While there is some fantasy violence, parents should note there are plenty of undead and other nightmarish creatures found within these pages. While nothing is too scary for younger readers, sensitive ones might find Nix’s descriptions of these creatures a tad much. Besides that, I cannot remember a single curse word or anything else to give parents pause. The series is also available in audiobook form as read by the always-terrific Tim Curry, which is an excellent listen.

Titles in the Series
The Bartimaeus Sequence

The Bartimaeus novels follow the exploits of magical apprentice Nathaniel and the five-thousand-year-old djinni Bartimaeus, whom Nathaniel summons to do his bidding. The first novel revolves around the unlikely duo perpetrating a petty theft that quickly evolves into a more serious threat than either could have anticipated.

The books are characterized by the witty banter of Bartimaeus and his relationship with the young and vain Nathaniel. Their bond evolves as the books progress and Nathaniel changes from an unlikable, haughty twerp to a person the reader can actually care about.

 A Parent’s Take

One of the cores of the Bartimaeus universe is summoning demons, afrits, and other magical beings to do one’s bidding. As such, there are lot of otherworldly beasties and nasties in the series. There is no adult language, and the violence is sporadic and rarely intense. There shouldn’t be too much here to keep younger ones away, and the books are excellent enough for older readers to enjoy as well.

Titles in the Series
Mistborn series

Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn series launched with one hell of a debut set in a fully-realized world begging for more stories to be told. The books follow Vin, a thief who scrapes by in a crew of rowdy thieves. Vin comes to discover she has powers she can use by “burning” metal scrapings she ingests. Vin becomes involved in a plot to overthrow the oppressive dictatorship of The Lord Ruler, a seemingly omnipotent being who has been alive for hundreds of years.

The world is extremely fleshed out in the first book alone, and the themes of slavery and dictatorship in a high fantasy setting make for a different type fantasy novel. This one also has a great audiobook reader.

A Parent’s Take

I have only read the first title in the series, but there was not a lot of content I would say warrants a warning flag. The biggest thing may be the themes of slavery, oppression, government, and evil the novel presents. There is also a sizeable cast of characters and things to keep up with; the series might be better suited for older readers.

Notable Titles
The works of R. A. Salvatore

Few modern fantasy authors have had the success or popularity of Mr. Salvatore. Salvatore is most known for his works set in the Forgotten Realms universe, which is from the world of Dungeons and Dragons, and the character Drizzt Do’Urden. Salvatore has fourteen series set in the Forgotten Realms universe alone, not counting his other series or other works. Needless to say, most fans of fantasy games will probably enjoy something Salvatore has written.

A Parent’s Take

The titles are all appropriate for most ages, as long as you are ok with a bit of violence and some beasties straight out of D&D's Monster Manual. There is very rare profanity or sexual content and most of the titles are about overcoming various obstacles such as bandits and ice dragons in order to reach goals. There is some fantasy violence, but nothing grotesque or gory.

Notable Titles
Works by John Scalzi

John Scalzi burst onto the scene with Old Man’s War, an excellent sci-fi tale of an army that only recruits from the older population of Earth. While he has continued the series, he has written several other books that are just as good as his debut novel.

Scalzi’s novels are usually filled with smart-aleck characters, witty dialogue, and imaginative narrative cores. Doubtless, most people reading this have read one of his books or heard of him by now. If you haven’t, I highly recommend checking some of his works out.

A Parent’s Take

I have thoroughly enjoyed most of Scalzi’s books I have read, but I must caution parents - These books are aimed at older readers. There is enough profanity here to fill a Quentin Tarantino movie, plenty of blood, guts, and detailed dismemberments, on top of some sexual situations and issues only older readers can relate to. That said, if you can get past these issues, you’ll find some great books for your teen's collection.

Notable Titles
The Dresden Files

Harry Dresden is a wizard-for-hire practicing in modern-day Chicago. Needless to say, he leads an interesting life. The Dresden series is essentially a neo-noir saga following a down-on-his-luck wizard in lieu of a gumshoe. While the trappings and archetypes of noir pervade the books, the focus on a wizard in modern times and Jim Butcher’s take on magic keeps things fresh.

There are also plenty of interesting characters, including wise-cracking femme fatales, trolls, fairies, vampires, and countless other magical beings. There are over 15 novels in the series, and each can serve as a jumping on point thanks to Butcher reiterating some major concepts for newer readers without becoming annoying for veteran readers.

A Parent’s Take

Like any good noir, there are crimes aplenty in the world of Harry Dresden. Besides the crimes, there is a fair amount of language and a good deal of violence. There are also some nasty denizens of magic floating about that might be a bit scary for the younger ones. I recommend this one for the older kids.

Notable Titles
Star Wars

The Star Wars franchise has been running strong ever since the release of A New Hope in 1977. The franchise has become one of the most beloved in nerd and mainstream culture. With the release of Episode VII: The Force Awakens looming ever closer on the horizon, a new generation will grow up with Jedis, Sith, and the Force.

With the massive success of the franchise, it should come as no surprise there are a plethora of books. Seriously. There are a ton of books in the series as you can see by looking here. Just take your pick for the gamer in your life.

A Parent’s Take

With rare exception, expect these books to match up with the content of the films: essentially, a great deal of sci-fi action, heroic journeys, and coming of age stories in a galaxy far, far away - but nothing that would keep the younglings at bay.

Notable Titles

Just scroll down this list and take your pick.

Obviously, there are countless other books gamers might find enticing. This is just scratching the surface on the wonderful world of books. If you have any favorites you would like to share, please do so in the comments below!

World of Warcraft's 11th Anniversary Gifts to Players https://www.gameskinny.com/8tyg9/world-of-warcrafts-11th-anniversary-gifts-to-players https://www.gameskinny.com/8tyg9/world-of-warcrafts-11th-anniversary-gifts-to-players Wed, 18 Nov 2015 03:08:19 -0500 Courtney Gamache

World of Warcraft went above and beyond for their player-base, giving them a huge gift for their 11th anniversary this year. Unlike normal anniversary gifts that are small tokens from the game to the players, this year's gift was huge.

Special Gift for Players

In World of Warcraft, they sent out the gifts via the mailbox in the form of a gift box. Contained inside is a cosmetic bind-on-account attachment of the legendary blade, Thunderfury. The Thunderfury has five charges, and inside the box is also a costume set of Deadmines boss Edwin VanCleef, along with 50 charges. Also included are wands with Murloc and Gnoll disguises, with 5 charges each, and an experience boost worth 11%.

This special anniversary event is running from November 16th through November 30th, giving players an adequate amount of time to claim their items. Although these may seem like silly items, it's a token from World of Warcraft showing their players that they do care and love having them enjoy their creation.

Do you think it's nice that World of Warcraft gave out items for their 11th anniversary? Could they have given out something better and more limited edition? Share your thoughts with me below!

Nintendo's Holiday Gift Guide announced all their grand gaming steals coming to retailers for Black Friday. Their sales cover bundles, consoles, games, and amiibos. The latter two categories enjoy additional deals at Toys R Us. To sweeten the pot of savings, Toys R Us and Nintendo eShop shopping comes with the added bonus of not having to fight the formidable and questionably sane crowd in-store. Walmart and Target will feature their own select title sales as well. We've got a lot to cover, so read on!

Bundles, bundles, come and get your bundles

The Wii U and 3DS each get their own fancy bundle this holiday season.

  • Smash Splat Special Edition Deluxe Set: This bundle includes one black Wii U console already prepped for good times with Super Smash Bros. and Splatoon pre-installed. The set sells for $249.99 at Walmart and Target while major retailers Best Buy, GameStop, and Toys R Us will sell it for $279.99.

  • Nintendo 3DS XL + Super Mario 3D Land: Grab a red, blue, or black Nintendo 3DS XL with a downloadable code for Super Mario 3D Land. You'll find this bundle at Walmart or on Amazon for $129.99.
Just interested in a console?

Nintendo's taking $20 off the New Nintendo 3DS XL pricetag. Pick up the handheld console in eye-catching red or sleek black for $199.99 at Best Buy, GameStop, Toys R Us, or Walmart.

Still not sure what new and improved 3DS XL offers? This system added:

  • Face Tracking 3D: opens up a wider range of viewing angles while the system adjusts the 3D "sweet spot" to best suit the location of the player's face.
  • New controls: ZL and ZR buttons join  the C Stick.
  • Built-in amiibo support
  • Faster processing power
  • Backwards compatibility and future console-exclusive content
  • Easy data sharing: now your can transfer photos, music, and other files between your PC (or another device) and mircoSDHC card without removal.

For new games and amiibos, look no further than Toys R Us.

Toys R Us boasts two deals you won't find at other retailers:

  • 2 for $22 amiibos: Includes ALL amiibos, whether $10.99 or $13.99. This deal starts on November 15th but lasts until Saturday, November 21st.
  • Buy one get one 40% off on all 3DS, Wii U, and Wii software: Lasts from Black Friday into Saturday the 21st. The discounted item must be of equal or lesser value, naturally. Find this deal in-store or online.

Don't forget about the coupons shoppers can nab at Nintendo's Mall Tour either! While the second Toys R US deal listed above cannot be combined with other offers, it's good to keep in mind all your holiday options. You don't want to be stuck without a good deal in sight if you miss out on Black Friday!

Nintendo eShop Cyber Deals

If you miss some hot Black Friday sales, don't fret: Nintendo's eShop Cyber Deals promotion doesn't start until November 25th. This sale runs through December 2nd and promises up to 50% off select Wii U and 3DS titles. Some prices will drop as low as $5.

Starting at 9 a.m. PT (or 12 p.m. ET), Nintendo's Gift Guide will sport an extensive list of all the games included.

Black Friday steals came early to Amazon https://www.gameskinny.com/21296/black-friday-steals-came-early-to-amazon https://www.gameskinny.com/21296/black-friday-steals-came-early-to-amazon Mon, 02 Nov 2015 17:44:59 -0500 Gabriella Graham

Holidays deals aren't taking their usual break after Halloween sales this year, so keep your wallets ready for action. Amazon has launched a Black Friday countdown event, featuring bonus "deals of the day" promotions for extra-special sales in addition to the multitude of savings offered throughout the site. Naturally, these fantastic deals extend to the gaming community.

The event's main page sports the online retailer's enthusiasm for the sales opportunity, promising deals "all day, every day" without the three week wait.

Technically, the full name of the promotion is the "Countdown to Black Friday Deals Week," but the sale lasts all the way through Black Friday itself on November 27th and doesn't end until Tuesday, December 22nd. Amazon Prime members gain additional benefits to their subscription during the promotion, with access to more than 30,000 "lightning deals", giving them a 30 minute head start on the rest of the world.

You won't want to wait too long to snag a hot commodity, as the daily featured deals come with ticking clocks. (These special sales can be found on the main page linked above with their time limits.) Don't forget that Amazon offers free shipping on orders over $35, meaning your savings won't necessarily have to compete with shipping costs even without Prime.

Snake has his eye on all the savings, obviously.

November 2nd's video game Deal of the Day was Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain for PlayStation 4, marked down 33% to save fans $20 on the title.

Other deals already listed as of November 2nd include:

Be sure to check out all the games and accessories on Amazon's "Video Games Deals" page! It's never too early to get Christmas shopping out of the way, after all.

We'll also keep you posted right here on GameSkinny if any truly awesome deals pop up. Are there any sales you're on the lookout for this holiday season? Let me know in the comments!

We all know someone out there who is having a baby or may have just had one. Sometimes buying your average gift for those nerdy, gamer parents just doesn't seem enough. Knowing where to find unique gifts to cater to their lifestyle can be tricky.

\n

Well I'm here to help with that since I, myself, just had to purchase a  shower gift for parents in this very category.

\n

Here you will find gift ideas from book parodies for mom and dad, to gifts for future nerdy, gamer baby.

Enjoy!

Large Wailord Pillow Plush

\n

I sleep in a zoo of plush animals, and I know some other people who love them, so this Wailord plushie (which is over 2 feet long, by the way) called out to me. Made of fleece, and stuffed with Poly-fil, it sounds wonderful to snuggle with or lie on as a pillow. Children would probably love to have this as their cuddle buddy!

\n

Given this Wailord is both hand and machine sewn by one person, he is a little pricey. He is available for pre-order at SmileAndLead's shop on Etsy for $100.00, and can be made in shiny form or customized to be even larger!

Minky Pokemon Ball Bean Bag Chair

\n

Beanbag chairs are not for everyone, but they are nice to have when there are friends around and you need some extra chairs or pillows for people to relax on. And what better to show off your love of Pokémon than a Pokéball beanbag chair? The great part is it is made out of minky, a fabric that is typically used for baby blankets because it is very soft and thick.

\n

A Snorlax would be cool, too, but the only one I could find was both out of stock and well out of most peoples' price range. This chair is also not cheap, but is for sale at bluemonkeystyle's store on Etsy for $75.00.

Poke-phones Hand Painted Pokéball Headphones

\n

For music-lovers who also love Pokémon, this set of hand painted Phillips SHP1900 headphones may do the trick. They can be customized to be any Pokéball, and are painted over with varnish.

\n

These headphones are available at ketchupize's Etsy shop for about $70.00.

Oak Research Kanto Black and Fire Red Full Zip Hoodie

\n

You finished your Pokédex, right? Even with the current trading options it is still quite a feat to Catch 'em All. In Generation I, it was a real challenge - given you had to know someone with a game and a wire to connect your two systems. This hoodie might remind you of the "good old days" in the Kanto region, when there were only 151 (or 386 in Gen III) Pokémon to worry about.

\n

The Oak Research Kanto hoodie is available from Player1clothing's shop on Etsy for $40.32.

Pokémon Eeveelution Umbrella

\n

Being unfortunately obsessed with "Eeveelutions" myself, I had to include something that showed off the creatures. This umbrella does that perfectly, and is suitable for most rain (unless you live in the Midwest USA where heavy rain flies sideways in high winds, then the umbrella will probably turn inside out). This is certainly a nice alternative to some of the less exciting umbrellas I have seen out there.

\n

The Eeveelution umbrella is available from Rosewine's shop on Etsy, for $38.00.

Pokémon Charmander Handmade Hat

\n

I will admit to having the Bulbasaur version of this hat, and I wear it around college all the time, without a second glance from anybody. The hats might be a little more fitting for a child, but at some point or another people usually stop caring that you are older and you like Pokémon. The hats are made of polar fleece, which means they are good in cold weather as long as it is not too windy.

\n

The Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle versions of this hat are available at riomccarthy's shop on Etsy, for $25.00 apiece (although there are some other versions, such as a Rattata and Froakie).

Pokémon Starter + Pikachu Etched Shot Glass Set of 4

\n

These hand-etched shot glasses by CustomShot are sadly not colored as they are in this picture (this is an effect from water and food coloring), but they are still lovely works of art that can be displayed or used as a normal shot glass would.

\n

The shot glasses are available at CustomShot's shop on Etsy for $24.00, though you can also request custom-made ones individually for $5.00-$10.00 apiece.

Aegislash Scarf

\n

If you have ever wanted to snatch that scarf from an Aegislash and wear it as an accessory or protection from the cold, here is your chance. RinalasCrafts has this scarf in both normal and shiny forms (instead of purple the swirl is yellow). This is bound to get some use in colder climates, especially during the fall and winter. Also, the scarf is undeniably cool looking.

The Aegislash Scarf can be found at RinalasCrafts on Etsy for $16.00.

Pokémon Soap with Pokémon Toys in the Middle

\n

This is a bit more of a fun thing for kids. But if you are at the age when you have children and you are introducing them to games like Pokémon, soap shaped like Pokéballs with Pokémon figurines in the middle are the perfect incentive not to avoid bath time. Who knows, the kids might even enjoy their bath! Plus, the soap apparently smells pretty good.

The Pokéball soap can be found at InnerSunSoap on Etsy for $11.00 apiece.

Kawaii Jigglypuff Post Earrings

\n

Admittedly, few men are likely to wear these adorable earrings from AlexsMisfitToys on Etsy. But there are just as many girl gamers out there, and Jigglypuff is pretty funny, especially when she uncaps her marker microphone and draws all over peoples' faces.

\n

How could such an innocent, cute face be so incredibly ill-tempered, but hilarious all at once? Regardless of how pink and sweet looking Jigglypuff is, she is still pretty awesome.

These earrings are available from AlexsMisfitToys shop on Etsy for $6.50.

Digitalsoaps

\n

It's time to clean those cartridges. Just follow these simple steps:

\n
    \n
  1. Pick up cartridge
  2. \n
  3. Add water
  4. \n
\n

Voila! That's right, I said water. Digitalsoaps creates parodies of famous old-school games in the form of soap. The titles have punny little names that add to the appeal. For example, Tetris is changed to Wetris, and Pokemon to Soapemon.

\n

Their soaps range from cartridges to controllers. Order your favorite form of geeky soap and surprise your house guests with these realistic remakes. The prices range from $14-$20.

Welcome to the wonderful world of dictionary prints. At the Drive In recycles old dictionary pages and reprints them with colorful prints inspired by video games, anime, and pop culture.

This Kindle ebook Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is a must for retro gamers who enjoy games from the eighties. With about a billion and one references to classic games, movies, and TV shows, Ready Player One is set in a world on the verge of collapse - economically, socially, and environmentally. Wade Watts is a teenager in this world. He, like many other humans on Earth, lives in the OASIS, a kind of virtual reality. Within the OASIS, people can live through their favorite shows, movies, and games in addition to experiencing video games from a true first person perspective. James Halliday, the creator of the OASIS, has just died, and will leave his entire fortune to the person who finds the easter egg within the OASIS,using a series of clues given by Halliday in his final video missive. There's romance, gaming, action, violence, and tons more in Cline's book; something for anyone and everyone who enjoys reading as much as they enjoy gaming.

Over the Void is an indie puzzle game. In this game, the goal is to find and open the door in the level. The door is not immediately apparent in this 3D game, because everything is a seemingly endless, dizzying void. This game is not without its perils. Gravity can be the end for any player.

\n

In general, Steam is a great place to get gifts for gamers. They have hundreds, if not thousands, of games on offer. Steam games can be bought virtually and gifted to a user no matter where you (or they) are physically. The best thing about Steam is the ability to create your own wishlists, view other people’s wishlists, as well as view the games they already own. You could be on Steam on Christmas morning and still get a great gift for your gamer. Steam sales make many of the most popular games less than $5 and the Christmas sale is the best sale of the entire year.

Munchkin is one of the few games people take way too seriously but you don't know how serious they are until it's too late and they've won the game. High-Fiverr: 6 Awesome Gaming-Related Fiverr Services https://www.gameskinny.com/r77pa/high-fiverr-6-awesome-gaming-related-fiverr-services https://www.gameskinny.com/r77pa/high-fiverr-6-awesome-gaming-related-fiverr-services Thu, 30 Jan 2014 09:19:33 -0500 Richard Whelchel

If you’ve never heard of the online service Fiverr, let me boil it down for you.  Need an SEO 250 word article?  How about some custom art, video, or a voiceover for your business. Remember that kid in grade-school who would eat his scabs for five bucks? He’s probably on there too.

Fiverr offers almost every imaginable service under the sun with a starting price of – get ready for it – five smack-a-roonies, or $5 for those of you who aren't hip to my jive.  While the site is mostly used for actual professional services, (done by some really creative people) you still will find your fair share of bizarre; like this guy who will create a custom greeting for you or a friend by popping his eyeballs out of his sockets, or this nice Indian lady who dance with a broom for you for up to 45 seconds.

However, given that this is a gaming website, I thought I would share with you my favorite gaming related Fiverr services. Why six not five? Because screw uniformity!  So, grab yourself a couple of Lincolns out of your wallet, and prepare to make it rain all over these sweet deals.

I will put YOU in your very own Android game.

Impress your friends by showing off a custom game with you as the star!  In Punch ‘Em Out – an Android compatible boxing game where you fight your character until his/her health falls to zero – you can live out your Mike Tyson’s Punch Out fantasy, and forever be immortalized in a video game. Better yet, have the maker put in a picture of someone you despise, so you can release that pent up rage against your frenamy or an ex.  Sure, you only get the choice of one game, but for five bucks you can’t be too picky.  Besides, it beats dropping a couple Benjamins on a Kickstarter game for the same offer.

I will send you my adventure board game, The Castle.

Are you a tabletop junkie?  Enjoy imagining a medieval slaughter with the roll of dice rather than watching it unfold on a TV screen?  The Castle – created by user yodazhang – brings you a unique ever-changing board game complete with keys, doors, and chests. It’s also playable by up to 4 players, making it a perfect addition on game night – which is great, because I’m tired of mercilessly failing at Settlers of Catan week in and week out.

For $5 you only get a PDF version to print out on your own, but for an extra $15 you will receive a traditional, cardboard, game.  Yodazhang also has 16 other unique board games for sale, and is just another example of the kind of creative individuals you will find on FIverr.

I will create professional Music and SFX for your App, Game, or Video.

This one is great for a fledgling indie developer, or just someone who wants some custom music to groove to while vacuuming.  This experienced UK television composer has done everything from video games to television programs on BBC – he also has a pretty kick-ass looking music studio that I’ve been dreaming about of having ever since I picked up a guitar.

I will recreate you as an 8-bit video game character.

Nothing is more iconic in the world of gaming than 8-bit pixel art.  Get yourself one of these custom bad-boys, set it as your online avatar, and soon you’ll be the talk of town on your forum or profile of choice.  One of these would also make a swell gift your gaming significant other.

Combine it with some custom 8-bit style music offered in the deal above, and you got yourself an eye-catching header for your blog or website.  Extras include a walking animation ($10), full animation ($20), and even a custom background ($20) to go with your order.

I will create a custom Nintendo pendant or chain.

These are pretty self-explanatory, and obviously so cool that I would pay $10 bucks for one – but I don’t have to!  Extras include: doubling the size, tripling the size, or even having it turned in to a magnet instead.

I will play an online game with you for 1 hour.

Yes, this is real, and possibly my favorite one.  Why?  Well, given that my friends no longer want to play games like DayZ, Mount and Blade or Age of Empires II online with me anymore, why not pay some stranger $5 to be my proxy gaming sidekick.  He does state that he will play ANY game.  What an entrepreneur!  However, it looks like he’s had no offers yet, so if you’re feeling a bit lonely in your online adventures, user “lordparadoxxx” has got your back.

Find any other sweet Fiverr deals?  Let me know below, and don’t forget to follow and troll me on the tweets!

Blue Goji

The last of our Games/Things to Get Ya Movin' is the Blue Goji - created by the founders of the insanely popular Guitar Hero, Blue Goji takes your tablet, 2 wireless controllers, attaches them to cardio equipment and turns your exercise into a game. Johann Sebastian Joust

\n

Another "get me outside" game, Johann Sebastian Joust is a no graphics, digitally-enabled game for 2-7 players. Played with motion controllers, the goal is to be the last player standing. Music selections from J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos plays at different speeds. The slower the speed, the more sensitive the controller - faster the tempo, less sensitive, giving you the opportunity to dash at your opponents and jostle their controller, breaking the threshold and causing them to be out. The Walk - Fitness Game Tracker

\n

The Walk is an app developed by the UK's Department of Health and made, interestingly enough, by Six to Start, the same company who made Zombies, Run! The Walk is a fitness game that gives the player walking missions, tracks their progress and provides updates throughout the journey. Launch the app, hear the latest developments, learn your mission and get walking. Quoted as "more than just a great pedometer/step counter — it's a way to turn walking into a journey, a challenge, and a rip-roaring adventure."

Zombies, Run!

\n

For anyone who has seen the movie Zombieland you may remember there were a few rules Columbus (the lead character played by Jesse Eisenberg) forced himself to follow. The first and most important rule: CARDIO! Enter one of the most fun fitness apps around - Zombies, Run! 2. This app is an ever evolving game with more than 750k players world wide. Launch the app, listen to the latest developments via "radio messages" and then start your mission. As you run you will gain achievements and receive feedback on your progress. Fear is a huge motivator for many ... having a voice in your ear telling you zombies are chasing you is good motivation to run fast.

Health Month

\n

As their website states, Health Month "is a game to help improve your diet, fitness, mental health, relationship health, and financial health – while enjoying it!" While the UI could absolutely use some updating, it still looks pretty fun. The games are month long and you play against others who have similar goals. Choose your own goals at the onset of each month from categories like Popular (limit alcohol, caffeine, more greens, etc.), Diet, Exercise, Mental, Misc and even Custom to create your own personalized plan. Nike+ FuelBand

\n

Another entry into the "gadget group", the Nike+ FuelBand is another wearable device that "will get you moving throughout the day." Similar to the FitBit, it will track your progress towards your preset goals of steps, calories, etc. and provide you with real time feedback by lighting up from red to green throughout the day. Hit green and you've achieved your goal. While you are competing against yourself, it's still pretty cool to see progress along the way. Priced above the FitBit, and having less features, its a tough sell, but worth checking out.

Withings Wireless Scale

\n

Withings is a wifi body scale. At first glance that sounds pretty lame, but digging a bit deeper, you'll find that Withings is way more than that. Its claim is a "Smart Body Analyzer" that measures weight body composition, heart rate and air quality (yes, air quality - don't ask me how). From there you can sync it with your smartphone to set fitness/health goals, etc. If that's not exciting enough for you, their promo video is a bunch of naked people (therefore slighty NSFW) on a giant white sheet. While it didn't make me want to buy their product, it was mildly entertaining....don't judge me.

FitBit

\n

Even with its funny name and interesting design, FitBit is gaining some pretty serious popularity. FitBit is like a standard watch on steroids, minus the unsightly bulge and bad temper. Per their website: "it's a wearable device that measures real-time data like steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned, stairs climbed and active minutes throughout the day. At night you can, track your sleep and wake up silently with a vibrating alarm." While it does have a steep price point around $100, its an incredibly powerful device and for anyone who is a data dork it will provide hours of "fun" personal analysis!

The Wii Fit U

\n

Sure many hardcore gamers will look at this and scoff, but this system really does make exercise "fun". With things like Zumba, Yoga, and Just Dance to name a few, you'll never have to leave your living room to get your fitness on. I like to equate the Wii Fit U to owning a moped: it's practical, efficient, and amazing to ride, but only cool until your friends see you on it. While there are some really great (and more intensive) customization kits for most standard controllers that we'll go over later, the simplest route is to just buy a pink controller.

\n

With a controller, almost always buy from the company. Due to a variety of hardware patents, buying an official controller is usually the way to go. There are a couple of manufacturers of decent off-brand controllers, but it's usually better to bet on the official ones.

\n

Pink controllers are available for just about every older console, including Xbox 360 (pictured above), PS3, and Wii. Pink versions of the current gen consoles controllers don't appear to be out yet.

Not every gal likes that touch of pink, but for some girl gamers, they really want that spark of femininity on their gaming gear. For some women, there's nothing wrong with a little bit of pink.

Treat your favorite gamer this holiday season with these great pink-themed gamer gifts.

Add a personal touch. Probably one of the best gifts I've ever gotten was from a friend that painted my vipers for my frequently used copy of Battlestar Galactica. They normally come in a plain plastic gray color. If you don't have much money to spend, but a little skill instead, painting minis for a board game really can make the game stand out.

Tackle Boxes like this one aren't just for fishing. Gamers have adopted them for their own uses. Some players go so far as to toss the original box and put it all in one of these. Games like War of the Ring and Descent usually won't fit in their original box once all the expansions are thrown in.

Give them something to carry it in. The above messenger bag is one specifically made by Battle Foam for the Iron Kingdoms RPG. Any Messenger bag would help out an RPG gamer. Several bookbags are big enough to hold RPG books or a board game or two.

Battlefoam creates trays for several games already. Privateer Press, Wyrd, and Cool Mini or Not are just a few companies that have contracted custom trays with Battlefoam. If you don't think one will fit your gamers needs, you can use the Custom Tray Creator to make your own. Get a few dimensions for card decks, tokens, and game boards and make it the right size for the box and you'll have a very happy gamer.

First player markers. Some games have that wimpy token that looks like it was just there to fill out the cardboard sheet. Some games, like Twilight Imperium, just need a player marker in the first place. It's such a good idea that Gale Force Nine encouraged players to get a dinosaur as a marker for their Firefly game and asked players to take a picture. They handed out a special promotional card to those that did.

Upgrade the tokens! Several card games have lousy cardboard tokens. Depending on the quality, they could bend and tear with little effort. For those games, I bring you the Fantasy Flight game tokens. They come in several different colors, allowing you to grab red for wounds, gold or silver for money, and many other uses based on color.

Sleeves. Some games get played. Great games get played a lot. A board game will start to show its wear over time, but an excellent way to keep them from aging so quickly is to sleeve the cards that come in the set. Not sure what size to get? Fantasy Flight marks the back of their boxes so you know exactly what size and how many you need! Just check the back of the box the next time you play. Say you're looking for instructions or something. In addition to protecting those cards, they can be used to add a little flair to the game by introducing art sleeves, like the ones above. A load of different card sleeves can be picked up at Cool Stuff Inc for $1-5 a pack based on quality and art.

Plenty of games come with the minimum necessary number of dice to keep the game... er... rolling. A lot of time can be wasted just looking for the one D8 that came in Battlestar Galactica. Sometimes it's just another D6 that can really help out. The dice above are from Super Dungeon Explore and, fortunately, CoolMiniorNot offers a pack full to reduce time searching for them. Fantasy Flight Games offers packs like this for Star Wars: X-wing and Descent as well. Dice sets usually run $10-15 for most custom dice sets and many can be found at sites like Cool Stuff Inc. or a nearby game store if you prefer local.

Does your tabletop gamer already have all the games you can think of? Don't want to buy a game they might not like? How about upgrading their game instead?
