I realize that 4 of 5 are DC heroes, but hey, they deserve some love too. I hope you enjoyed my trip of heroes that I think deserve the proper video game treatment. Maybe with the success of comic book movies, we'll get some great comic book games.

\n

Let me know in the comments if you agree with my list. If not, who do you think should be included?

Green Lantern
\n

Now this is the one I most want to see done well. Green Lantern, in any iteration, is my favorite DC Comics character. Whether it's Hal Jordan and his endless rivalry with Sinestro, or the latest duo of Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz, there are tons of great characters and stories to pull from. Imagine racing through space defending the galaxy from earth and utilizing the all-powerful Lantern Ring.

\n

Heck, you could pull in all the other Lantern Corps and make a MMO out of it. Let the player choose their preferred color, or allow them to take a quiz to determine what they should play as, since the ring does choose the lantern after all.

Constantine
\n

Now this is a bit of an odd choice, I admit, but Constantine makes for a great character. There are tons of great stories you could have too, like the Trinity of Evil storyline. The gameplay would be similar to games like Heavy Rain, solving puzzles using mystical devices. Plus you have a great cast of sidekicks that need his help.

\n

It's always fun playing a jerk sometimes too.

"},{"image":"http://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_360,w_640/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/t/e/e/teen-titans-6f333.jpg","thumb":"http://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_85,w_97/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/t/e/e/teen-titans-6f333.jpg","type":"slide","id":"146860","description":"
Teen Titans
\n

I realize that this is more a group than it is a single character, but they deserve some video game love. You could have almost any roster. With that, it could bring back the style of the great PS2-era games X-Men Legends and X-Men Legends 2. Give me some online and couch co-op and let me play as Beast Boy, changing from a shark solving a puzzle to a gorilla smashing some baddies.

\n

You could also have an unlock system where you have to help other members with missions before they become a playable character. Think of all the DLC you could have.

"},{"image":"http://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_360,w_640/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/f/l/a/flash-cd03e.jpg","thumb":"http://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_85,w_97/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/f/l/a/flash-cd03e.jpg","type":"slide","id":"146859","description":"
The Flash
\n

Sticking with popular superheroes, The Flash TV series is doing exceptionally well, and this game could play off of that popularity. Sure, it may be a little bit harder to develop this game, but I think it could be great.

You play half the game as crime lab specialist Barry Allen, searching for clues a la L.A. Noire and then, once you have a lead, you race through the city and fight bad guys. You could even have side quests where you help out the fire department and police department throughout Star City. The controls would just need to be slightly tweaked from DC Universe Online and you'd have some great gameplay to boot.

Captain America
\n

With the popularity of Marvel movies and war games, the time is ripe for a proper Captain America game. Just think about it; you're in the thick of WWII as a super soldier. You are working your way through a tactical world trying to find Hydra's home base. You can visit classic scenes from the war with new eyes and completely different gameplay from most war games.

\n

Flip around and throw your shield, throw cars and tanks and use the occasional pistol in a pinch. The mechanics are pretty simple to tweak to make right for the character. That's the only way I want a WWII game to come back, honestly: if you play as Captain America.

Comic books are a great source of visual media. Not only do they have great action scenes and immersive stories, but they often build a vibrant universe all their own.

And what does that mean? It means that many of these universes and stories are perfect for video games. The stories are definitely there to be told, and the mechanics could definitely be worked out, so long as they are made with the passion and skill of an Arkham game (man, doesn't the new Spiderman game look great?)

\n

So, without further ado, here's our list of the top 5 comic books characters that should have their own game.

X-Men: Battle of the Atom Celebrates 50 Mutant Years https://www.gameskinny.com/g4hcb/x-men-battle-of-the-atom-celebrates-50-mutant-years https://www.gameskinny.com/g4hcb/x-men-battle-of-the-atom-celebrates-50-mutant-years Thu, 25 Jul 2013 12:18:25 -0400 Capt. Eliza Creststeel

In celebration for 50 Years of X-Men comics, Marvel Comics is releasing a 10-part comic book crossover event called "Battle of the Atom".

This event is expanding into video games.

According to USA Today, Marvel has partnered with GREE to produce X-Men: Battle of the Atom, a mobile digital card game. The game promises to act as "a time-traveling narrative tie-in" - so, the story in the game will affect the comic story and vice-versa.

Battle of the Atom follows their previous card-based mobile game, Marvel: War of Heroes by Mobage, which released in 2012.

At this time, neither a release date nor any gameplay details were revealed. But, Marvel did put out release a trailer (see above) for the game, featuring art from "Avengers Vs. X-Men," "All-New X-Men" and more. The trailer is narrated by Wolverine and poses the question of what would you do with powerful to travel through time to speak to your past or future self.

X-panded Men

Since the storyline shows the X-men in several timelines from the past, present and future, the game developers will be able to use characters from across the complete 50-year history of the comic.

"X-Men is a lot about legacy, and where are we going and what are we getting, so this is the perfect story to examine all of that." - Brian Michael Bendis, writer ofAll-New X-Men

Marvel Vice President of Games Production T.Q. Jefferson said the game will also lead in to the event by taking a look at recent Marvel continuity.

"It's fairly comprehensive, but to provide the appropriate context we're going to start with some of the big stories that precede Battle of the Atom, that help us frame the conflict and give context on why there are X-Men on both sides of the fence,"  "The idea of being able to span the entire history of the X-Men -- and beyond -- was tremendously appealing to us." - T.Q. Jefferson

The festivities are over, and attendees for SDCC 2013 have staggered home to recuperate from sleep deprivation, sore feet, and the burning holes in their wallets. Such is the glory of the internet that for those of us who were unable to finagle a way down to San Diego this past weekend, we can only make do with photographic evidence.

\n

Every gaming, anime, comic book, and general geekery site has exploded with some of the coolest and craziest cosplayers to set foot in the San Diego Convention Center. However, Power Ranker Ariel Kana from Ranker.com has pointed out that no major publisher has come out with a ranked list of the top cosplays, and has rushed in to fill this apparent void. The result looks like a random #sdcc2013 Reddit dump next to some numbers.

Well, make it a competition if you wish, but this time around we're going to have categories just like everyone else. Many, many, many categories... Take a look at the slides to follow for some the most crazy awesome, crazy funny, and just plain crazy cosplays from this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Some will borrow heavily from the Ranker list, some won't. You know we can't possible hit all the great ones, but we can try! (Photo credits where possible.)

Deadpool Gameplay Launch Trailer https://www.gameskinny.com/9bbq2/deadpool-gameplay-launch-trailer https://www.gameskinny.com/9bbq2/deadpool-gameplay-launch-trailer Mon, 24 Jun 2013 20:06:53 -0400 Brighton Early

Deadpool! Bang! Babes! Mayhem! These are the elements that make a great launch trailer for a lovely story about Deadpool. Nolan North will be doing the voice of Deadpool as he has done before in other media. The developers from High Moon Studios worked with former Deadpool writer Daniel Way to pen down the script. The storyline begins with Deadpool accepting a mission to assassinate Chance White, when Mister Sinister shows up to ruin the day and costing Deadpool money.

As Deadpool seeks out his revenge on Mister Sinister, he encounters other Marvel characters like Domino, Wolverine, Cable, Death, Rogue, and Psylocke. As a third-person action game, Deadpool will gain new combos as he progresses. A combination of melee and shooting, Deadpool will use big hammers, sai, swords, guns, and laser guns. The game will rely heavily on dismemberment and decapitations as body parts and bloodstains fly everywhere. With the amazing accelerated healing factor as Deadpool's super-power, you can decide to either reattach severed limbs or wait for them to regrow.

Deadpool will be released for just the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on June 25th. Published by Activision, Deadpool will come out on Steam for the PC (we just don't know when yet). With all this chaos, I can't wait for Deadpool to make comments about girls rear-ends and shoot people in the face at point-blank range!

X-Men's Rogue Joins Deadpool Game https://www.gameskinny.com/6el25/x-mens-rogue-joins-deadpool-game https://www.gameskinny.com/6el25/x-mens-rogue-joins-deadpool-game Wed, 19 Jun 2013 13:19:53 -0400 Capt. Eliza Creststeel

As the release date of High Noon and Marvel's Deadpool game grows closer, they added something to sweeten the pie. Or rather sweeten the tea, in the white-haired form of a familiar Southern belle.

Rogue joins the cast of guest stars who will be fighting alongside (or against) the Merc with a Mouth when the game is released on June 25th.

Rogue appears to have had a makeover, including a variation on her green outfit and a short haircut, instead of her brunette mane.

It's not indicated how Rogue will interact with Deadpool in the game, though Marvel's announcement did mention her mutant ability to absorbs powers, skills and even memories. Wade ponders the idea of them coming into 'contact'.

She joins a Who's-Who of Marvel characters in the cast, including the likes of Wolverine, Cable, and Domino who will have her first ever video game appearance.

Mister Sinister and his Marauders seem to be the game's main adversaries.

Deadpool is unleashed June 25th.

Marvel Comic's violently wise-cracking, loud-mouth, psychotic anti-hero who often talked directly to his readers is about to start talking to you as part of this own edgy, out-of-control and darkly funny as Hell video game from Activision and High Noon Studios.

Some of Marvel's big names will join Wade Wilson in his brutal adventures. Names like Cable, Domino, Psylocke, Mister Sinister, Vertigo, and many more will be fighting side-by-side or toe-to-toe with Deadpool

Mature Audiences Only? Define Mature.

Be WARNED!

This NOT a kid's game. Bad language. Graphic violence. General insanity.

But, this is a full on action game. Fight villains, annoy allies and cause mayhem on a grand scale with flashing katanas, an arsenal of firearms and explosives and DP's wicked charisma.

The graphics look great. There is a lot of detail in the gameplay animation and very creative movements and styles of combat for Deadpool to pull off various attacks.

Wade's potty mouthed sense of humor is in full force as well; from countless wisecracks in combat to off-the-wall cut scenes, this game will have you giggling. I admit I'm guilty of snickering while listening to the banter, just from the gameplay videos with all his snarky comments. I felt like a kid listening to their Dad's Richard Pryor album in the basement.

Too Dumb or Too Smart?

Deadpool definitely has his place in the Marvel Universe. Whether it's the cutting edge, self-mockery of comics or the breaking of the fourth wall, The Merc with a Mouth confronts a lot of what is stereotyped in comic books by amp'ing up those elements and reveling in them all with a knowing wink.

So, you've been put on notice gang. Don't come back to the Amazon saying you didn't know what you were getting into. Just like that old Richard Pryor album, this game may end up tucked in many a drawer until the little ones are safely in bed.

Marvel Heroes: The First Taste is Free https://www.gameskinny.com/70grm/marvel-heroes-the-first-taste-is-free https://www.gameskinny.com/70grm/marvel-heroes-the-first-taste-is-free Thu, 06 Jun 2013 11:36:47 -0400 Alan Bradley

In some circles, free-to-play is a dirty term, uttered with a distaste similar to the one that usually accompanies phrases like “movie tie-in” or “escort mission.”  It’s easy to understand why:  once upon a time, the free-to-play model was reserved exclusively for disposable shovelware that wasn’t high quality enough to warrant charging money for it upfront.  It’s also a concept tied in some rather nasty ways to social and mobile gaming, where its heritage is one of exploiting the addictions of the lowest common denominator of casual players through microtransactions.

All that is changing, though, and titles like Gazillion Entertainment’s Marvel Heroes are proof of how a free-to-play model can produce a top-tier product without feeling exploitative.

Setting the tone

The game opens with a beautifully rendered cinematic that features the mysterious celestial entity, The Watcher, squaring off against a Cosmic Cube wielding Victor von Doom (Doctor Doom to his friends and foes).  Doom has acquired the Cosmic Cube, a device that grants its owner a staggering surfeit of power, through (surprise!) nefarious means and The Watcher, sworn to neutrally observe the machinations of the universe, has broken his vows to intervene before Doom can do untold harm.  The power of the cube proves too much, however, and a triumphant Doom is left to weave his sinister plots unmolested.

Immediately we were impressed by the nods to Marvel lore.  The Watcher is a fairly obscure character with a strong comic pedigree, and the Cosmic Cube has a history in the pages of Marvel that goes back as far as 1966.  Counter-weighting these slightly more obscure elements with a heavyweight like Doom, one of Marvel’s most recognizable supervillains, is a great way to inspire instant curiosity about the game’s narrative.

Selecting your hero

After the intro, players are given a handful of free characters to choose from.  After a splash screen that features comic giants like Thor, Spiderman, and Wolverine, the selection of free characters is pretty underwhelming.  The menu includes Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, The Thing, Daredevil, and Storm: not exactly an A list of Marvel superstars.  Interestingly, the premium characters on offer are not being sold for a single, flat rate.  If you want to pilot the robot suits of a certain alcoholic multimillionaire, for instance, you’ll end up paying more than the majority of the other premium heroes, like Deadpool or The Punisher.

We selected Hawkeye, mostly because of the descriptive text that listed him in game mechanics as a “ranged blaster”, and were treated to a motion comic detailing a crisis at The Raft, a maximum security detention center for super-powered criminals.  Seems Doom had been busy, blasting apart prison walls with the Cube and freeing a handful of his evil peers.  Our Hawkeye was dispatched by paramilitary super-cops S.H.I.E.L.D. to try to contain the situation and take down the escaping villains.

Into the breach

Our first taste of the action-RPG style gameplay was very satisfying, and we were quickly reminded that Marvel Heroes is a David Brevik joint, one of the minds behind Diablo.  Heroes plays a lot like a Marvel themed Diablo, and whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing will depend on how you feel about Diablo’s oft-imitated brand of point and click action.  For us, the heavy coat of Marvel paint on practically every element of the game (down to exceptional minor touches like the character attributes system being modeled after the old Marvel tabletop RPG) was enough to make the well-worn combat feel fresh and interesting.

After battling our way through a horde of Hydra thugs and also-ran supervillain the Living Laser, we were treated to a showdown with The Green Goblin complete with pumpkin bombs and his signature glider.  The action combat really sings in these bigger boss encounters, necessitating careful dodging and timed attacks to succeed without burning through an excessive number of S.H.I.E.L.D.-branded medkits.  Because areas like The Raft are instanced, the designers are able to make the combat snappy and responsive and allow players to dodge and counter attacks in real time.

Home sweet home

After defeating the Goblin, a S.H.I.E.L.D. quinjet spirited us off to StarkTower, headquarters of the Avengers and our first hub area.  Here, Wonder Man and Hank Pym (a.k.a. Ant Man) introduced us to the subtleties of the crafting system and we were able to offload all the junk we picked up fighting our way through The Raft.  Marvel Heroes has a full inventory and paper-doll equipment system, but sadly the items that you strap on your character don’t alter their appearance.

We also took this opportunity to look through our tree of available powers, which you add points to as your character levels, in more detail.  Hawkeye has access early on to a wicked arsenal of modified arrows with effects ranging from paralyzing electricity to freezing ice, and can also unlock a dodge maneuver that makes slipping away from enemy attacks much easier.

Frying pan AND fire

After briefly exploring the tower, we were informed of trouble brewing in Hell’s Kitchen in New York City.  Apparently some of the former Raft inmates were stirring it up, amongst them Electro and costumed bruiser The Rhino.  Meanwhile, lurking in the shadows, pulling strings from behind the scenes, the maestro of organized crime The Kingpin was making a play to expand his underground empire.  We were shuttled off to investigate, and found ourselves battling street gangs and the Kingpin’s henchmen, culminating in a showdown with Doctor Octopus and his eight deadly metallic limbs.

Thus far, the game has been consistently entertaining and polished, and the Marvel lore has set its hooks in us deeply enough that we’re already contemplating which of the premium heroes we’re going to plunk down money for first.  We can only hope that other free-to-play endeavors take their cue from Marvel Heroes and continue to provide quality entertainment options for budget-conscious gamers, minus that oily sensation that they’re trying to slip a hand into our wallets while our heads are turned.
