Indie developer Mark Essen, also known as "Messhof", recently confirmed that his game Nidhogg -- an intense one-on-one sword-fighting game spiritually akin to a high-end Atari 2600 game -- will be receiving a sequel. Nidhogg 2 was tesed on YouTube with a very short clip of edited gameplay, and was confirmed on Twitter in a post by Mark Essen:

The extremely brief teaser used to announce the game doesn't tell us very much. But, from what little can be seen, Nidhogg 2 will add a bit more depth to the foundation of the first game in the form of new weapon types. How much these additions will truly change the gameplay is yet to be seen.

The trailer also clearly showed off the sequel's new, cartoonish, and yet oddly grotesque artstyle. Where the first Nidhogg had a very simple aesthetic that resembled a high-budget Atari or Amiga game, Nidhogg 2 goes for a more detailed look. The result is refreshing yet undeniably bizarre. The public reaction to this new look has been very mixed so far, with some people even dismissing the game entirely because of it. Hopefully the actual gameplay will win people over in the end, and we can all come to love it.

Nidhogg 2 is planned for release some time in 2017.

Indiecade 2013 Winner Nidhogg Finally Arrives on Steam Mon, 13 Jan 2014 11:36:06 -0500 Rich Kovarovic

The much-anticipated and critically lauded indie-fencing title Nidhogg is finally making its début on Steam today, after years of making the rounds at game festivals and conferences. Messhof’s two-player sword-fighting title is also available at a slashed price for a limited time.

IGF finalist Nidhogg has received positive critical attention since 2010, and in more recent years, has been declared the Indiecade 2013 Game Design Winner. The super-pixilated dueling game is a fast-paced “fencing tug-of-war, full of graceful acrobatics and clumsy stabs.” The 2D side-scrolling stages stretch in both directions, allowing a wide expanse for two players to frantically, or strategically, fence, parry, and stab. If outmaneuvered and left swordless, players can also resort to melee combat.

Nidhogg makes its commercial début with both local and online multiplayer and tournament modes, as well as a single player arcade mode. The Steam version of the game also features both controller support and Big Picture Mode.

Nidhogg also features a soundtrack of dynamic music from musician and producer Daedelus, offering music that is “unique with each play-through.”

The game is currently available at 20% discount for the next week, bringing the price down to $11.99 for one copy of the game, or $21.59 for a two pack.

Anticipated Indie Game NIDHOGG Announces 2014 Release Thu, 02 Jan 2014 13:40:57 -0500 Amanda Wallace

The highly anticipated indie game, NIDHOGG, is finally being released on Steam on January 13, 2014.

The fencing-style competitive game will feature a single player mode, an 8-player tournament mode, and multiplayer (previously released stills and gameplay have shown the game as being a 1v1 style game). There has been no word on whether the game will feature online or local multiplayer.

NIDHOGG is a game by indie developer Messhof, part of the duo responsible for indie hit Hotline Miami, and up until now, has been playable exclusively as an arcade game at trade shows. As such, the game has achieved an almost cultish following.

NIDHOGG features a unique gameplay style wherein two opponents face off in a fencing style position, each one attempting to kill the other and defend their side of the level. By jumping, dodging and killing, the player can then move on to the next level to once again face his opponent. It's a concept best illustrated in gameplay rather than text.

NIDHOGG is one of the most anticipated indie game releases of this year, even though it's release was just announced yesterday. This high-action game is famous for addictive, fast paced gameplay and will be a must-have for any indie gamer.
