There are plenty of generic gaming conventions which happen around the UK throughout the year, but rarely is there a convention which is dedicated to one particular game. On February 11th and 12th, the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne welcomes the return of the unofficial Minecraft event Nethermined. It will take place at Northumbria University events suite within the universities Student Union building.

The event welcomes many popular Minecraft YouTubers such as SeaPeeKaySirCutieYuki, and TheOrionSound, who will be hosting panels on all sorts of interesting Minecraft topics and showing what they do in real-time by playing live, as well as giving fans the opportunity to meet them.

Another large part of the event is the parent-focused Adult Education sessions, as well as Minecraft EDU workshops. These sessions give parents a look at how Minecraft is used for educational purposes and what skills their children are learning/using when they are playing the game. It also gives children the chance to learn new in-game skills by working through different challenges and scenarios.

A spokesman for the event says that due to the success of this area last year, it has been one of the main focuses of the event this year:

"At our last event we piloted EDU Minecraft Workshops, something that has not been done before, as we wanted to bring a new dimension to the event. We have sessions that are run by dedicated Minecraft Mentors for kids of all ages to play Minecraft that have challenges included within the sessions, so that they can develop their skills and work on unravelling situations through their own decision making and outcomes.

This was a resounding success at the last event, much more than we had initially anticipated, so this time we have really enhanced this fourfold at the upcoming event where we will be able to offer the workshops to many many more of our attendees!"

Visitors will also be able to take part in competitions and challenges in the LAN area, where 20+ PCs will be set up to play on. And like any good gaming event, there will be a whole host of traders from all over the North East selling all kinds of merchandise and wares. A selection of retro and arcade games will also be available to play, so there really will be something for everyone at this year's event!

"We simply aspire to provide a better event each time and offer something different to an ever expanding audience. We also want to provide a platform in promoting local YouTubers, Gaming organisations and businesses within the north east whilst also developing new relationships within the UK as we look to expand our own horizons.

We have been to many of these events in the past and they all seem to lack in the areas that we see as key and are always keen to enhance. I suppose that’s why they have been a great success and hopefully continue to be so."

On top of all the Minecraft fun, the event is bringing local indie developers into the fold, where they will get the chance to exhibit their games to a local audience. Already confirmed are Coatsink, the Sunderland-based developers responsible for the VR title Esper 2 and popular platformer Shu (check out my review of Shu).

AntVenom

\n

AntVenom makes some really catchy music. His channel has more than just music, with tips and tricks in between. But when he drops a music video, you'll be happy you subscribed -- even if that's not your thing.

\n

Besides music videos, he also does in-game experiments, Minecraft top lists, and overviews of the Pocket and Console versions of Minecraft.

\n

\n

That's our list of channels to watch for Minecraft music, both big and small. Be sure to check out our countdown of the best Minecraft music videos as well.

Hopefully you like our list, but let us know if there are any other great content creators you'd like to see get noticed!

TheMusicalKnight

\n

This channel is slightly different. Instead of Minecraft Music videos made in the Minecraft video editor, it's actually TheMusicalKnight making music within Minecraft itself.

\n

He makes and shows off musical note compilations in-game. He's got a smaller channel, but being that it's something different, it seemed worth mentioning! Smaller numbers don't necessarily mean bad content -- and in this case it defintely doesn't!

Phantaboulous

\n

Phantaboulous has been making Minecraft music videos since 2012 and is still going strong today!

His About page on YouTube states that he posts about once every month or two, which is a pretty good turn-around time for music and animation. And interesting fact: He's from the Netherlands.

This YouTuber is a smaller, but up-and-coming creator. They upload roughly on a 1-2 month basis -- although sometimes instead of a music video, it's just an animation.

As many of you may know, Minecraft music videos are very popular.  They've actually been around for a number of years -- long enough for some artists to have come and gone.

There have been artists like CaptainSparklez who seem to have moved on from music, or at least taken a long hiatus. But this is a list of channels currently producing music for Minecraft to look out for.

\n

Note that subscriber count isn't necessarily a deciding factor here! After all, who would read a list of things they didn't know for the sake of self-confirmation?  Hopefully you haven't heard of some of these artists so that they can grow their fan-base and keep making awesome Minecraft music.

Why don’t we stop and take a minute to thank everyone who plays/mods/animates in Minecraft? Okay, last CaptainSparklez video. This one is pretty old too, but it's too perfect not to include. A parody of "Gangnam Style," we could have left this one in 2013, but it's too perfect a hilarious parallel to the original. Plus the phrase "Hey Sexy Piggy" never gets old.

Building a house in Minecraft is an essential aspect of being able to survive the night, but they don't always turn out how we planned.

\n

If you are anything like me, your house will usually consist of wood, stone and let's be honest, a little bit of dirt. No matter how many trees and flowers you plant around your house, they just aren't able to save it from the monstrosity you have created. While you may not want to admit that you spent two hours building it, you still end up with something like this:

Bad Minecraft House Design

Okay, that may have been a little dramatic but you get my point, Minecraft building isn't everyone's forte.

But that's why I'm here, I have collected some of the best Minecraft house tutorials that will not only have your houses looking amazing and surprise your friends, but allow even the worst builders -- like myself -- to create these houses with ease.

From Hunger Games to Theme Parks: Minecraft Specialty Maps and Modes https://www.gameskinny.com/ch6gj/from-hunger-games-to-theme-parks-minecraft-specialty-maps-and-modes https://www.gameskinny.com/ch6gj/from-hunger-games-to-theme-parks-minecraft-specialty-maps-and-modes Thu, 30 Jun 2016 08:09:08 -0400 ChocolateCat42

Minecraft. We all know it; most of us love it. But, are you getting the most out of your experience? I'm not talking about Survival vs. Creative or one Minecraft seed vs. another. I'm talking about special maps and modes.

Clever creators have crafted a smorgasbord of maps specifically for special game modes and theme parks. The Hunger Games maps even inspired Minecraft's new Battle Mini! Have I got your attention? Read on for more information and some of the entertaining Let's Plays that show off these awesome maps. Just remember, some maps work for PC while others work for Xbox -- so be sure to investigate map requirements before attempting to download!

Hunger Games/Survival Games

Inspired by the popular series, the Hunger Games maps -- also known as Survival Games -- are a Minecraft battle royale. Players start in a beginning lobby area before either being dropped into the map or having a grace period to run out and pick a starting point. True to the inspiration, the last player standing is the winner!

The generic rules for the game are simple. First and foremost, players must begin with empty inventories. All items that players will use can be found in chests on the map or taken after another player is killed. Players are not allowed to break blocks -- in other words, there's no cheating by creating your own shortcuts and hideouts! You are allowed to break leaf blocks, but you can't place them back down except in a chest. Every map has a rules board that lists both the basic rules and any map-specific ones, so be sure to check that area out before the host starts the game.

A wide variety of Hunger Games maps exist, from the Enchanted Kingdom to Halo-inspired maps, even holiday-themed! Check out the links above or the video below to see stampylonghead (Or, Mr. Stampy Cat to his Subscribers) take on the odds in his Minecraft Xbox Let's Plays.

Feel up to the challenge? Then may the odds be ever in your favor.

Sad Panda Adventures

Inspired by rail shooters like Pokemon Snap, Sad Panda Adventures takes place in a magical land where pandas come in many forms -- including winged pandas -- and live happy lives as immortal beings. But when a jealous Ghast steals the Mama Panda's immortality-granting flower, it's up to one special panda to save the day.

For this game, players hop on the back of a Sad Panda. While the panda moves through the levels, players are tasked with shooting certain types of mobs, any other mobs trying to kill them, and chests for loot and extra arrows. Multiple difficulty levels keep the game entertaining and challenging, and the option to support 1-4 players allows friends to come aboard and help the pandas.

This map can be found on Minecraft Maps. Check out iBalllisticSquid's playthrough from the first two levels and see just how much customization went into this map:

Want to give it a try? Head on over to Minecraft Maps!

Sky Giants

Sky Giants is a team PvP map where the goal is to kill the opposing teams' giants before your team's giant is killed. Each of the four teams is assigned an island with a Giant Friend like Terrence in the above picture. Players can mine, shop, and fight guardians to kit their teams in diamond gear. An enchantment table is available to upgrade items. Other mobs will occasionally spawn, and the center island has a pavilion that spawns Guardians for extra boosts and loot upon defeat.

Player deaths affect points, but players have infinite spawns. For this game mode, a team's giant friend is also their spawn point. Once the giant dies, the spawn is gone, and the team is eliminated.

Gameplay for Sky Giants is equal parts offense and defense. The TL;DR instructions would read "Protect your giant, kill theirs." In practice, though, it's more difficult. Take the below Let's Play with AshDubh and iBallisticSquid. How much more difficult would their run-through have been if they weren't talking to each other? Communication with your team is the key to strategy in many games, however your team decides to handle it.

Look like fun to you? Give Sky Giants a try today, and protect your giant zombie friend!

Theme Parks

Roller coasters, mini games, and themed restaurants, oh my! Game mode maps aren't the only specialty content that outside builders are bringing to the denizens of Minecraft. Another portion of downloadable maps includes theme parks. From parkour challenges to fully automated redstone-wonder roller coasters, theme parks large and small can entertain you for hours.

From massive parks like Notch Land to single-ride maps like the Ghostbusters-themed Railbusters coaster (that doubles as a four-player mini game), the options are limitless. Creators like Leisure Gaming and Nuropsych1 are teaming up with others, dedicating hours of their time and expertise to bring these fantastic experiences. Don't believe how epic they are? Check out the below video of a Doctor Who Minecraft coaster.

Buckle up and go for a ride -- but please remember to keep your hands and feet inside the minecart at all times.

The Minecraft Movie Will Be Coming in 2019 https://www.gameskinny.com/ja6ht/the-minecraft-movie-will-be-coming-in-2019 https://www.gameskinny.com/ja6ht/the-minecraft-movie-will-be-coming-in-2019 Mon, 27 Jun 2016 11:32:29 -0400 Megan M. Campbell

Minecraft is possibly one of the most popular games of all time, and its popularity continues to skyrocket with its most recent title for the Wii U. Minecraft was originally released for the PC back in 2009. The game was developed Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson, and has since been developed and published by Mojang.  Fans of the series will soon experience what they love about the games on the big screen in the near future.

Mojang announced today that the Minecraft movie will be released May 24, 2019 in both IMAX and 3D. Though it may seem like a long time before the film comes out, Mojang wants to make the film “completely awesome”.

It’s likely that the movie will be based on the spin-off, Minecraft: Story Mode, developed by Telltale Games and originally released in December 2014. In Minecraft: Story Mode, the player controls Jesse, who sets out on a journey with their friends to find the Order of the Stone in order to save the world.

More news will be coming in the future, so stay tuned! If you're playing Minecraft in the meantime, check out all our awesome Minecraft seeds for even more building fun.

Episode 6 of Minecraft: Story Mode, entitled "A Portal to Mystery," will be released next week. Mojang's Marsh Davies revealed that Episode 6 is one of three new episodes slated to be added to the game. According to Davies, "A Portal to Mystery" will follow the exploits of main character Jesse and friends as they encounter "an unfamiliar land" and "the sinister figure known as The Host."

Interestingly, the June 7th release will feature will feature cameos from some popular YouTube Minecraft players. According to Davies, these YouTube personalities will be joined by other professional voice actors to make the cast list even more impressive:

Stampy Cat, StacyPlays, Dan the Diamond Minecart, LDShadowLady and CaptainSparklez are among the glitzy cast to join Jesse on this latest adventure. And of course, there's a stellar crew of Professional Actors to voice the other roles, including the likes of Patton Oswalt and the incredible Ashly Birch.

Telltale Games also conducted an interview with these YouTube personalities, which you can view above. According to Davies, those who want to "experience the story completely anew" should wait to watch the video, even though it does not contain any "big spoilers."

Fans of the series will be able to hear all of these voice talents at work, as well as discover what awaits Jesse and company, when "A Portal to Mystery" releases next week.

The 10 best Minecraft YouTubers for newbs and pros alike https://www.gameskinny.com/16ie4/the-10-best-minecraft-youtubers-for-newbs-and-pros-alike https://www.gameskinny.com/16ie4/the-10-best-minecraft-youtubers-for-newbs-and-pros-alike Wed, 23 Dec 2015 08:30:01 -0500 Brandon Morgan

YouTube has become the most popular website on the entire planet, all thanks to the massive amount of varied content being produced by the likes of people like you and I. Your favorite comedy troupes, the best gaming moments, and even short films are being produced on a regular basis for our entertainment.

Minecraft, being one of the largest video games to have ever been developed, makes complete sense to have numerous shows and millions of videos on the website for your enjoyment. That being said, you can't have these series without someone working in the background to produce high-quality content.

These are the ten best Minecraft YouTubers around.

1. SkyDoesMinecraft

While you probably won't find a lot of helpful content on SkyDoesMinecraft, you will certainly find plenty of entertainment. Sky has managed to ensure millions of subscribers are laughing on a regular basis. He fails at the games he plays, such as survival games and parkour, and yet still manages to make it fun to watch.

If you want a kind, awesome personality, then SkyDoesMinecraft is the exact channel you want to subscribe to tonight.

2.  Captain Sparklez

Captain Sparklez is considered to be one of the first YouTube stars to produce high-quality Minecraft content for the community. His subscriber base, all of which are dedicated and loyal fans, tend to believe the man behind the game is a master.

His videos tend to be some of the most interesting, leaving everyone satisfied after they watch one or two, or maybe even five in one night. He also prioritizes clean language, making him rather family-friendly.

3. Stampylongnose

Stampylongnose may have an incredibly odd name, but people have voted him one of the very best Minecraft players on the video service. He is creative, hilarious, and just a pure joy to witness in-game.

His entire crew plays with him, and they tend to produce some truly epic quality builds within the game world. If you're looking for some sort of inspiration, then this is a good spot to begin your journey.

4. TheDiamondMinecart

TheDiamondMinecart has quickly made a name for himself after doing Mod Showcases, which give everyone in the community an in-depth look at some of the game modifications available to Minecraft players.

Along with the mod series, he has become known for some truly impressive house and statue builds, plus his modded survival game mode that is quite well known on the series.

5. Ssundee

Everyone knows how Ssundee puts a lot of time and energy into the content he produces. The high quality of videos is evident, but his gameplay is what really shines. He loves the world of Minecraft, and you can see that in the builds he produced and the Hunger Games series he partakes in.

Ssundee is known for interacting with his subscriber base on a regular basis, too, which a lot of big-name YouTube players actually won't do. That sets him a step above the rest in our book.

6. TheSyndicateProject

Personally, TheSyndicateProject was one my first introductions into the world of Minecraft on YouTube. Tom Cassell, the owner of the channel, has been gaming for many, many years now. Minecraft is definitely not his first project. Upon delving into "The Minecraft Project," however, everything else went to the back-burner.

This is probably one of the highest recommended channels to begin your adventures.

7. Minecraft Universe

If you've ever wanted a general channel covering the majority of the world of Minecraft, then Minecraft Universe is the exact place to subscribe. Here you can find Let's Plays, popular mod reviews, modded game series, and even a couple of tutorials to help improve your own game.

Jason Probst, the owner of the channel, has produced just about every type of content you can consider.

8. iJustine

While iJustine is probably most known for her Call of Duty matches on her dedicated gaming channel, the young woman has also made quite the name for herself in the building world of Minecraft. Her survival series has been considered one of the best, and it is easy to see why.

Many people could find her annoying, but take some time and get into the regular content being released, and you will find entertaining quests.

9. ShepSquared

ShepSquared is relatively new when it comes to the world of YouTube Minecraft players, but that has not stopped him from becoming one of the very best. He branched off into gaming after taking some time on a podcast.

Now, thankfully, Shep has his own server where the community may join him for mini-games and collaborations alongside the Cube group.

10. BlueXephos

BlueXephos is part of the Yogscast crew, who are known for producing great content. They have an intense energy that has become popular and addictive to the community.

Simon and Lewis, the two members of BlueXephos, are well-known friends, and it truly shows in their content.

These ten stars are only a small fraction of the YouTube world, but they tend to be some of the most interesting when it comes to our favorite building game.

Minecraft: Story Mode Episode 1 - Fluffy Good Fun https://www.gameskinny.com/75y5t/minecraft-story-mode-episode-1-fluffy-good-fun https://www.gameskinny.com/75y5t/minecraft-story-mode-episode-1-fluffy-good-fun Sun, 18 Oct 2015 08:53:38 -0400 Stephanie Tang

It's been only been three months since the first announcement, but the first episode of the great collaboration between Telltale Games and Mojang is now upon us. Minecraft: Story Mode - A Telltale Game Series is here!

When the news first broke, I'll admit, I didn't quite know what to expect from a story-driven Minecraft game. There was a lot going for it: A-list voice actors! Survival-adventure premise! Telltale! I was optimistic. I'd had reservations about the Telltale Borderlands game when that news first broke, but the game is very good, and my doubts proved to be unfounded. I was set to be pleasantly surprised about this game as well.

Still...making up a story for a game that was founded on essentially zero story certainly made it feel like both parties may be grasping at straws.

In some ways, I feel like this proved to be true.

Lighter in premise than The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us, and more family-friendly than either Tales from the Borderlands or Game of Thrones, there are plenty of Minecraft-y references to keep any die-hard fan smiling through this good-natured, funny romp as our heroes join forces to save the world from oblivion.

Unfortunately, while story is the name of the game, Story Mode gives you only a sliver of backstory in the opening cinematic before launching pell-mell into the modern-day drama of nerdy protagonist Jesse (voiced flawlessly as a male by Patton Oswalt and a female by Catherine Taber), his group of friends, and his pet pig as they set out to win the EnderCon Building Tournament.

This would be just fine if we had any inkling, Minecraft veteren insider info or otherwise, about what exactly goes on in this world. How old are these people? What do they do? What kind of world is this? Are there twilight curfews and border patrols against monsters? Do people have parents or do they just pop out of the dirt like mushrooms?

(The answer to at least one of those questions is that they're 'youths' - but I know this because I read the press release discussed here. You're hard-pressed to find that out otherwise.)

Perhaps Telltale, so used to working with franchises rich with fully fleshed-out storylines and world details of their own, have gotten a little spoiled in this respect, because Minecraft doesn't provide any of that - it is an empty sandbox that was created to build your own world, completely and utterly. And it doesn't look like there was really time to do that in Episode One.

There's room to grow in the coming episodes, and plenty of world/story gaps that can be filled in in their own time, but for the moment, Story Mode features characters that, aside from Jesse, feel somewhat flat and two-dimensional.

And how does it look and feel?

Of course, the world itself certainly looks like Minecraft - houses, environments, objects, even the letters on the signposts are meticulously realized with instantly recognizable vanilla Minecraft textures. The character models have gotten a bit of an update - they conform for the most part to their blocky world, but with mouths and jaws that can open and close, and hair and accessories that jut out of the main skeleton. Close enough to pass muster, but more suited to cutscenes than their vanilla counterparts.

It's very easy to remember that you're not actually playing Minecraft, and infinitely harder to forget that you're playing a Telltale game.

And there are a lot of cutscenes.

In typical Telltale fashion, the game is littered with unskippable cutscenes and timed responses as the characters throw path-altering choices (some small, some life- and relationship-changing) at you almost willy-nilly, and your decision needs to be made in seconds.

These scenes are made very bearable by the excellent voice acting from all parties, even minor characters. This season features the voice work of Brian Posehn, Ashley Johnson, Scott Porter, Martha Plimpton, Dave Fennoy, Corey Feldman, Billy West, John Hodgman, and Paul Reubens (you can check out the launch trailer with actor interview snippets here).

Then there's the fact that Telltale happily throws in cheeky good fun and Minecraft references galore - shearing sheep, punching trees, and collecting sand blocks in a training/supply-gathering montage, collecting nine slime to craft a slime block just like you're supposed to, references to the building mechanics of the original game when you have to build a shelter.

(Unfortunately, you don't actually get to physically build and design anything yourself, all of it is handled by Telltale QTEs.)

...There's also Reuben, the pet pig who adds a personal touch to the training regime of his best buddy.

Telltale also appears to have learned from their Tales from the Borderlands experiences, because this game introduces the utterly innovative RUN MECHANIC. A run mechanic in a Telltale game! Unscripted! WASD-controlled!

It was so unexpected and so beautiful (and offered so casually, as a helpful little tooltip in the opening sequence when you first gain control of Jesse), I swear I shed a tear.

It doesn't seem like a big deal, but it ups the enjoyment and "video game feel" - some of which that's taken away when your innate curiosity about your surroundings moves you to root through nearby chests or check out posters and signs, and you're rewarded with micro-cutscenes instead of the simple open-close mechanics of the original game.

Word of warning: Those of you who are looking to check this game out should be willing to settle in for a little to keep on playing. You have quite a few cutscenes to get through before your closest auto-save point, and if you don't make it this far, you'll have to go through most of the unskippable cutscenes and dialogue options again.

Furthermore, in less-than-typical Telltale fashion, this game's auto-save feature does not work nearly as seamlessly as it has in other games of its type - the Cloud Save feature pops up in the mid-right of the screen during appropriate parts, but I found that, for me at least, a lot of the time it just doesn't manage to sync to the Cloud.

Furthermore when starting up the game again to continue, there is an unexpectedly long wait time to get through the menus - first to check for DLC, then to sync to the Cloud Server. No ALT+tabbing while this process happens, or else it will fail - you'll just have to sit tight for about 30 seconds to a minute to let it do its thing.

Thankfully the Cloud Server isn't exactly integral to playing this game - and you have the option of turning off the cloud save and using your local save file instead.

Should you buy it?

All said, there is a pretty compelling story introduced in Episode One that I'm very happy to see more of, and characters that I wouldn't mind knowing more about. Technical issues were surprising in such a well-worn format, but not enough to take away from the game experience. The voice actors are on point and are some of the top reasons why I find this game so charming - I am definitely looking forward to more adventures in the future.

I am pretty confident that it's only going to get better the further on we go. But as always with multi-part games, I suggest holding off until more's been released to get a good idea of what you're in for. What's better about this particular Telltale game is that I feel you don't necessarily need to have played a great deal of the original Minecraft to get any real enjoyment and understanding from the game, like you do in Game of Thrones or Tales from the Borderlands

Episode 1: 'The Order of the Stone,' is the first of five episodes, and is available digitally on PC, Mac, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 - as well as iOS and Android mobile systems as of yesterday. The game is also slated for release on Wii U and PlayStation Vita, but with no confirmed date. Check out your appropriate outlet via the Telltale Online Store

(In the interests of full disclosure, a copy of this game was provided by Telltale for the purposes of this review.)

The real reason Minecraft is so popular on YouTube https://www.gameskinny.com/gimme/the-real-reason-minecraft-is-so-popular-on-youtube https://www.gameskinny.com/gimme/the-real-reason-minecraft-is-so-popular-on-youtube Sun, 11 Oct 2015 13:30:01 -0400 Brandon Morgan

Minecraft, for many reasons (obvious or otherwise) remains one of the fastest-growing, most interesting games to make an appearance on YouTube in some fashion. Currently, a YouTube search for the Mojang-developed game will offer machinima, let's plays, walkthroughs, PvP matches, survival games, prison breaks, and MCMMO, to name just a few.

But why is this so? Why is Minecraft so damn interesting that it's become the biggest thing for gamers since pizza?

Before we look at other reasons, let's get the most obvious one out of the way.

Minecraft is just a really, really good game. Everyone and their mother has tried it out, and the majority of those who have given the building title a chance have fallen in love, or become purely addicted, like myself. It's such a simple concept that almost anyone can become a master after just a couple of hours of play time.

That said, there are plenty of other video games out there offering the same type of experience. So why aren't they as popular?

Minecraft is very well-suited to YouTube because it's incredibly diverse

There are so many different game modes within Minecraft that the chances of seeing a single match played in the same exact way more than once is nearly impossible. You will never find someone who has the same PvP style as another YouTuber.

When it comes to building, there are so many different combinations of blocks, and so much creativity budding within the minds of the player community, that you won't find something exactly similar to what you've previously built. Browsing Minecraft videos on YouTube is the perfect way to discover some new ideas and concepts, and receive a bit of inspiration for your own Creative or Survival server.

The worlds, the builds, the various outcomes...Minecraft is just too diverse of a game to not show off what you can accomplish. And since you'll never be able to build it all or do it all yourself, you can turn to YouTube to enjoy what others create as well.

Not everyone who is interested in Minecraft can or will play it, but they still want to experience it
These days, it seems like you cannot go to school, to work, or even walk down the street without passing by someone who's talking about how much enjoyed their time in the voxel game and sharing their exploits. If you haven't played it yet, you probably have the same thought each time you hear someone spouting those sentiments: "Why haven't I played this game yet?"

But what if you don't have the time or the money to sink into a new game right now? You can head over to YouTube, where thousands - if not millions - of other players have already posted their thoughts and gameplay. That way, you get the opportunity to explore the wonders the game has to offer without having to toss down any cash on it yourself.

Word of mouth, after all, is one of the best forms of marketing that there is.

Minecraft, at its very core, is a game about being with your friends and building something wonderful. People want that experience, whether they are enjoying it firsthand or they are watching someone else accomplish that feat. It is easy to live vicariously through another gamer while they stream or record. And in a game that's so open-ended, where you could never ever do or see everything there is to do and see, it's nice to catch a glimpse of what other people are up to. All of these factors have helped Minecraft become a dominating force on YouTube, and it looks like it's going to stay that way.

Do you agree? Can you think of any other reasons why Minecraft might be so popular on YouTube? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Minecraft Movie Director Announced: Rob McElhenney https://www.gameskinny.com/4lmt1/minecraft-movie-director-announced-rob-mcelhenney https://www.gameskinny.com/4lmt1/minecraft-movie-director-announced-rob-mcelhenney Tue, 21 Jul 2015 20:43:58 -0400 Courtney Gamache

The upcoming Minecraft movie that will be hitting the big screen is finally coming together. Mojang announced today that Rob McElhenney will be in the director's chair.

The Minecraft Movie

After Warner Bros. obtained the rights to the game in 2014, they decided it would be prime time to work on a cinematic picture, featuring this famous sandbox game that has been modded by many users over the years. The game which is identified as action/adventure with the hostile mobs, and includes creative building blocks, gives the director many options to work with and plenty of scenarios.

The man behind the camera

Rob McElhenney is famous to many, as he was the director, creator, writer, and star of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He will be able to bring a fresh view into this wonderous game, having plenty of experience behind the scenes. Based on his Twitter activity, he also seems very excited to have the job.

It was rumored last year that Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy would have the position but I guess Warner Bros. changed their mind.

What do you guys think about this director choice?

Gazamo Games Sprinter Maps Cinematic; Awesome Builds! https://www.gameskinny.com/4cwlj/gazamo-games-sprinter-maps-cinematic-awesome-builds https://www.gameskinny.com/4cwlj/gazamo-games-sprinter-maps-cinematic-awesome-builds Thu, 02 Jul 2015 20:20:22 -0400 Courtney Gamache

The team behind the Gazamo Games server has added an awesome cinematic video featuring their intricate maps for their Sprinters game.

What is the Sprinters game?

The Sprinters game on Gazamo's mini-games server is a fast-paced parkour game with numerous people. There are various effects used within the game as you pass over the different color blocks. Yellow blocks bring more speed, purple is a slowness effect, black brings on a type of nausea, green gives you a check-point, and red causes a jumping reaction.

A YouTube blogger and Minecraft fan, YoshiToMario did a Sprinters showcase video, "RUN FROM THE RAGE" which can be viewed below. As YoshiToMario plays through the complex and rage inducing maps, he describes how the mini-games server runs and some unique features.

What else does Gazamo Games offer?

Gazamo Games developed an entire mini-games server, featuring some unique Minecraft mini-games. By applying the new Minecraft block updates, they've added new effects.

For a full list and explanation of each mini-game offered, please review my previous article, "Gazamo Games Debuts Public Beta", which divulges further.

If you want to start playing on the Gazamo Games mini-server, you can use the IP, play.gazamogames.com and review their website.

Minecraft Is Much More Than Just A Game https://www.gameskinny.com/fltl3/minecraft-is-much-more-than-just-a-game https://www.gameskinny.com/fltl3/minecraft-is-much-more-than-just-a-game Wed, 13 May 2015 17:04:42 -0400 T.W. Francis

Do a search on YouTube for Minecraft and you come up with millions of results. With these results its not surprising that MInecraft is the most streamed video game in YouTube history.

But what makes this game so popular?

Let's face it, Minecraft's graphics aren't exactly cutting edge, but more people download and play the game everyday.  Computer and console game developers make their games more realistic with each new game developed, but Minecraft stays the same.

Infinite Possibilities

Every time you start a new game everything is different. New places to explore like rivers, valleys and natural caves.

For those that don't want to explore the game is only limited by your imagination. People have created castles, large towns and cities, underground mine cart systems that work like subways, and even a full replica of the Starship Enterprise.

Little To No Advertising

The game from launch has had no real advertising. You don't see some big budget live active videos advertising the game. You didn't have some big game company basically shoving the game down your throat.

The game was made by one man working on it at night and during the day he worked his real job. This man; Markus "Notch" Persson, had no marketing budget when he launched the game.

The only way this game was advertised for the most part was by word of mouth.  Your friends and family told you of this great game, but at first you looked at the game cringing at its graphics. It may have taken you awhile to finally try the game, but once you did you were hooked.

The popularity of the game is driven by the people not by some company out to make more money.

The Game Can Be Coded

The game can be and is regularly coded by the players themselves. "Mods" as they are called can be anything the player can imagine; like changing the way the maps look, making new building blocks, giving the player special powers or even making games that can be played in the bigger world of Minecraft.

Minecraft teaches kids how to program.  There is even a company called ThoughtSTEM that has created add-on software called LearnToMod that aims to teach children how to build their own mods.

Using their interface kids can slowly learn how to program getting more advanced as they go, even earning credits at the University of California regardless of age.

The movement to get kids to learn how to code is huge drawing names like Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates who support code.org who is trying to get schools to teach programming with Math, Science, and engineering.

In The Classroom

The game is not just a game anymore, even teachers are learning to embrace Minecraft as a practical learning tool.

Joel Levin is a teacher at a primary school in Manhattan and he co-founded a company called TeacherGaming.  The company took Minecraft and adapted it so it can be used by teachers in a classroom. This customized version of Minecraft is called MinecraftEdu.

The game is popular with teachers because it teaches lessons hands-on which kids are into already.

The uses of the game in a classroom are endless. Some teachers are using pre-built virtual ancient worlds and assigning students to work in groups to complete quests like fortifying a village against marauders.  It teaches teamwork and how to solve problems as a group. The kids even learn a few history lessons about urban planning and warfare without even realizing it. Other teachers are even downloading mods to teach children about gravity, velocity, and other forms of physics.  Some even set up giant models of animals cells to teach biology.

With all of this it is no surprise that the game is popular despite its throwback graphics.  The game is teaching people in and out of the classroom and has started a fire under the learn to code movement.

If you haven't tried Minecraft yet, you might want to hop on the band wagon before you're left standing alone.

No, this is not a group of dorks sitting around a mic talking about the pro's and con's of Mario and Minecraft.  This is better.

Imagine if Mario and Minecraft Steve had an epic show down.  Well you don't have to because that's exactly what happened.

Minecraft is a pretty straightforward game made up of a few basic interactions. You can build, farm, participate in animal husbandry and interact with the flora and fauna. Watch the video to get the distilled essence of Minecraft.

Could You Imagine Minecraft and Star Wars Combined? https://www.gameskinny.com/61wnv/could-you-imagine-minecraft-and-star-wars-combined https://www.gameskinny.com/61wnv/could-you-imagine-minecraft-and-star-wars-combined Fri, 18 Jul 2014 13:17:06 -0400 Venisia Gonzalez

Many of us are fans of the Notch/Mojang title Minecraft and even bigger fans of epic films of Star Wars. Have you ever in your wildest dreams imagined what it'd be like to see Star Wars in a Minecraft world--as a film? Well thanks to some seriously dedicated fans known as Paradise Decay, now you can! They have remade the entire 1977 Star Wars "A New Hope" film in the world of Minecraft.

Paradise Decay stated that they are a huge fan of Star Wars and the reasoning behind this project is that their daughter, currently fighting cancer, loves Minecraft. The entire project is a re-creation in full vanilla Minecraft that has taken them 3 years to make, with some individual sets taking up to 6 months to build. No mods were used according to their blog, just custom textures and art. All their video footage is from the actual game itself. The characters featured in their film are mainly parodies of the original characters.

Copyright infringement is not intended and all links to appropriate parties are in the video descriptions. I support George Lucas, Lucas film, Disney and Mojang for making this universe possible.

This is a non-profit project, made for fans of both Star Wars and Minecraft. The final project will be free to view on their website here. There will be no sound with the final version of the Minecraft film. You'll need to own the original version of "A New Hope" in order to sync the soundtrack.

"My one ambition in life, is to meet my idol George Lucas" -- Paradise Decay

They only have 11 more minutes left to complete until they are completely done according to SPLOID, with the film being available sometime early 2015. Be sure to check out the amazing trailer, it's an absolute delight.

The Diamond Minecart https://www.gameskinny.com/n77ez/the-diamond-minecart https://www.gameskinny.com/n77ez/the-diamond-minecart Thu, 05 Jun 2014 00:05:11 -0400 Mary Yeager

The Wii U here has logged a lot of YouTube hours. One channel that is watched with consistency (and by that, hours at a time per day) is The Diamond Minecart. My kids love watching the Minecraft and Japanese product videos that Dan releases on his channel.

Clean and Entertaining

One thing about this channel is the language is kept clean. There are no worries about kids picking up obscene language in the process or hearing things that are not meant for their young ears. Dan is also highly entertaining. While his commentary is clean and steadily rolls on without a hitch, it does not sound like it is scripted. He is just enjoying his game and sharing it with his many fans.

Videos are Perfect Length

Some let's play videos can get pretty lengthy and can get boring after a while. Dan has a wonderful comedic aspect on his videos that keeps viewers entertained while they discover the growing universe that is Minecraft.

Family Friendly

Overall, The Diamond Minecraft is a great channel to watch as a family. It provides new aspects of the game for family discussion and play. Discovering mods and other new games in the Minecraft universe are part of this great channel.

Gaming Videos of the Week: February 2nd-8th https://www.gameskinny.com/q4g09/gaming-videos-of-the-week-february-2nd-8th https://www.gameskinny.com/q4g09/gaming-videos-of-the-week-february-2nd-8th Wed, 12 Feb 2014 05:09:08 -0500 Andrew Wynans

After a week off, GameWisp is back with a few more of our favorite videos of the past week. There were plenty of new videos to choose from this last week, including several new Let's Play series.  While we would love to bring you all the great gaming-related videos that were posted to YouTube between February 2nd and 8th, there simply isn't enough time to watch the hundreds of hours of gaming-related video posted last week.  But of the many excellent videos that we did have time to watch, here are three of our favorites:

1. Zueljin: How to Build a Hibachi Grill - Minecraft Indoors

The header video this week is brought to us courtesy of Zueljin.  Zueljin is primarily a purveyor of various types of Minecraft videos, though he does throw in a bit of Rust for good measure. With so many dedicated Minecraft channels putting out so many videos, it's often difficult for particular videos to rise above all the noise.  However, a Minecraft video whose title referenced both interior design and Japanese food was something I'd never seen before.   Any channel that comes up with an angle on Minecraft video that we haven't necessarily seen before is definitely worth checking out.

This particular Japanese food inspired video comes from Zueljin's new series of Minecraft tutorials called Minecraft Indoors. In this series, Zueljin shows off some of his unique ideas for sprucing up the interior of your Minecraft home.  The video is short and to the point, with straightforward instructions walking the viewer through the steps of making their very own hibachi grill.  The style of the video is vaguely reminiscent of HGTV home improvement shows, which gives it the feel of a parody of sorts while still maintaining its sincerity as a useful tutorial.  He also has a video showing how to build various types of refrigerators, one of which actually dispenses ice.  Zueljin hasn't put out any more episodes of this series since the first two, but assuming that he plans to continue the series, I'm certainly intrigued to see what other interior decor he comes up with.

2. RockLeeSmile: Let's Play - Jazzpunk [Dear Ether] Ep.1

Nick, an avid fan of the indie genre, is the man behind RockLeeSmile, a channel dedicated to all things indie games.  In his "About" tab, he describes himself as "...a gamer born in the 80's. I love art, and I have a passion for finding obscure, overlooked, and wonderous indie titles and showing them to the world."  His signature series, Indie Impressions, is a first impressions series in which he gives his first impressions on lesser known indie titles.  Though I am new to RockLeeSmile, I am very excited to delve into his library's vast wealth of indie video to see what gems I can find.

This video is not a first impression video, but rather the opening episode of a full Let's Play of the quirky and intriguing title, Jazzpunk. In fact, Nick reveals in the opening moments of the video that he had tried to make this game the subject of an Indie Impressions video, but realized that it was so good that it deserved a longer series.

Steam describes Jazzpunk as "...a comedy adventure set in an alternate reality Cold War World, plagued with corporate espionage, CyberCrime, and sentient martinis." That humor is reflected throughout the opening sequence of the game, along with a distinctive art style, witty and often ridiculous dialogue, and an intro reminiscent of the colorful 50's graphic style used in the intro to the Tom Hanks film Catch Me If You Can.  Nick clearly enjoys the opening sequences of the game, and his commentary is both articulate and insightful.  Nick's intelligent commentary combines with a wonderfully odd game to create a really engaging experience.  This is definitely a series worth watching.

3. Blitzwinger: LEGO Movie Videogame - Part 1 - EVERYTHING IS AWESOME (HD Gameplay Walkthrough)

In honor of a truly great film, we bring you a video about a game based on that film.  This is the first episode of Blitzwinger's walkthrough of The LEGO Movie Videogame.  Blitzwinger runs a fairly eclectic gameplay video channel, playing all sorts of titles from LEGO Marvel Superheroes to PayDay 2 to Minecraft.  His commentary style is upbeat and focuses on reactions to gameplay, keeping the viewers in the moment.

The initial sequences of this game very much reflect the opening moments of the movie, including using much of the same dialogue.  So If you plan on seeing the film (and you absolutely should), you might want to skip this video until you have a chance to get to the theater.  Blitzwinger's commentary blends seamlessly into the overall sense of fun inherent in the game, and I was thoroughly amused at how many of his observations reflect intentional elements of the film (such as the characters using instructions to build things and everything including the lava and water having a LEGO aesthetic).  Overall, this is a great first episode of a great game based on an excellent film.

So there are three of our favorite gaming videos of last week.

Every week, thousands of channels post exceptional gaming content.  This is just a taste of the hours and hours of entertainment that make up the gaming-related video universe.   We will bring you more great videos next week, but for now make sure you spend some time with the excellent content put out by these three excellent channels.  Also, what were your favorite gaming-related videos of last week?

Virginia Tech's New Minecraft Machinima: OPERAcraft (It's Exactly What You Think It Is) https://www.gameskinny.com/wtbmr/virginia-techs-new-minecraft-machinima-operacraft-its-exactly-what-you-think-it-is https://www.gameskinny.com/wtbmr/virginia-techs-new-minecraft-machinima-operacraft-its-exactly-what-you-think-it-is Tue, 10 Dec 2013 18:59:29 -0500 Stephanie Tang

Mojang's sandbox world of cubes has made headlines everywhere - from topping game charts, to being used as a teaching tool in schools, and taking the blame for school violence

Now it has been made into an opera too.

The ambitious brainchild of Ariana Wyatt and Ivica Ico Bukvic of Virginia Tech, the project was carried out with K-12 students, who wrote the libretto (that is, the "lyrics" to the opera) with the help of an English professor. The entire thing was set to Mozart and performed and livestreamed last week.

The students built a massive set for "OPERAcraft," and used their Minecraft avatars to act out the opera's major roles, with voice work from vocal students in Virginia Tech's music department to help bring the project to fruition.

(NOTE: the beginning dialogue is very quiet, skip through to about the 4-minute mark.)

The result has been lauded as a successful blend of art and technology, and another statement piece in the evolution of video games into its own art form. With the art of video games already claiming an exhibition at the Smithsonian, and the first Grammy nomination going to a video game score, this unexpected mix of the old guard and the new fits right in.

But how did it begin?

Co-creator Ariana Wyatt is an assistant professor of voice at Virginia Tech, and came up with the idea after hearing about other programs aimed at fostering of love of opera in the schools, making it more accessible to everyone rather than as a stepping stone for those training to be in the performance world.

As she told the Washington Post:

"We all strongly believe, of course, that in-depth exposure to the arts is important to live, not only to reach out and make future musicians," Wyatt said. "I knew there was a way to create a set like this, I knew the technology was there."

On the hunt for software that would let students build with few limits, with the help of her VT colleague Ivica Ico Bukvic, who studies the intersection between music and technology, she hit upon Minecraft and the project quickly ballooned into a giant cross-departmental project that included the art, music, and computer science departments to bring life to the blocky Minecraft avatars.

"We at least want their mouths to move," Wyatt said. "We have a team of computer scientists and music technology people who are working to retrofit Minecraft a little for some facial control...and to allow for them to have a little more body movement."

What do you think?

While opera may not be your musical cup of tea (and no one said it had to be - as a long-time lover of The Phantom of the Opera, I was crushed to learn that it wasn't mine), can you really help but smile at the idea of Minecraft's little box-faces warbling to a Mozart score?

Minecraft Animation Video - "Take Back the Night" https://www.gameskinny.com/2kvit/minecraft-animation-video-take-back-the-night https://www.gameskinny.com/2kvit/minecraft-animation-video-take-back-the-night Sat, 31 Aug 2013 14:16:14 -0400 Courtney Gamache

I'm a really big Minecraft fan, and it blows my mind when I see these animation videos and song parodies. It's astounding how creative some people can be, not just in lyrics but also by taking Minecraft and making it look good.

If you've ever played the game, you'd know that the characters look and move a bit like Legos. They don't particularly have fluid motions like humans do, and the graphics within the game aren't that spectacular. Amazing YouTube artists take this game into an editor and make it so movie-like you can barely tell it's Minecraft!

"Take Back the Night", a Minecraft Animation

Today on YouTube CaptainSparklez uploaded a new animation, to the song "Take Back the Night". Featured in the header is the song, but if you've ever seen his earlier videos, you might recognize the beginning scene from "Fallen Kingdom", a parody song that flows very well with inventive lyrics.

"Fallen Kingdom" was based off of the song, "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay, while "Take Back the Night" is an original song written and performed by TryHardNinja, with the animation done by many people. CaptainSparklez makes sure to give credit to them at the end of his videos as well as in the descriptions.

For those aspiring Minecraft animation artists, CaptainSparklez does put up some "Behind the Scenes" videos for those to see how much work goes into creating these mere minute videos.

Leave me a comment with your favorite Minecraft animation or parody.
