Hot Wheels and Rocket League developers Psyonix have partnered up once again to announce an exclusive DLC pack. The Hot Wheels Triple Threat pack, costing $5.99 launches on all available platforms September 24.

The DLC features three premium Battle-Cars: the Gazella GT, the MR11, and the Fast 4WD. Four unique details are available for each vehicle as well as three car toppers: a gorilla, a snake, and a spider.

To celebrate Hot Wheels' 50th anniversary, free content will also launch alongside the DLC. The free content includes a new rival arena and 50th-anniversary themed customization items.

Beginning in mid-October, the die-cast Hot Wheels Rocket League 5-Pack will be available in stores worldwide. The pack includes the premium Battle-Cars plus the Bone Shaker and Twin Mill III, the Hot Wheels DLC cars from last year. The real world diecast cars will feature Rocket League-branded paint jobs, and select packs will include a code for an exclusive in-game item, the "Hot Hot Wheels."

We gave Rocket League a 9 out of 10 when it released, and it's continued to impress us year after year.

Rocket League Coming to Nintendo Switch on November 14 https://www.gameskinny.com/2nqni/rocket-league-coming-to-nintendo-switch-on-november-14 https://www.gameskinny.com/2nqni/rocket-league-coming-to-nintendo-switch-on-november-14 Wed, 01 Nov 2017 10:42:07 -0400 Allison M Reilly

Psyonix's hit game Rocket League will be coming to the Nintendo Switch on Nov. 14. The game will be available to download through the Nintendo eShop for $19.99 (or regional equivalent).

Players who download the Switch version of Rocket League will have access to two exclusive battle cars: the Mario/Luigi NSR and the Samus Gunship.

To access the cars, players must complete special in-game requirements. Both cars come in an orange team and blue team version. For the Mario car, it's a Mario theme for the orange team and a Luigi theme for the blue team. For the Samus car, the orange team aesthetic features Samus' traditional suit while the blue team version is Zero Suit inspired.

Rocket League on the Switch will have cross-platform compatibility with Xbox 360, Mac, Linux and Windows players will be able to have matches with other people on those platforms. Unfortunately, PlayStation is not included because Sony isn't allowing cross-platform play due to concerns about player safety on non-PlayStation platforms.

Besides the new cars, Rocket League will have all of the content, modes and features found in the other versions of the game. Look for it when it drops Nov. 14 on the Nintendo eShop.

GFE Takes Rocket League by Force https://www.gameskinny.com/ozom1/gfe-takes-rocket-league-by-force https://www.gameskinny.com/ozom1/gfe-takes-rocket-league-by-force Thu, 03 Aug 2017 14:49:47 -0400 Lydia M

Rocket League has taken eSports by storm in the past few months, with Psyonix promising over $2.5m to Rocket League eSports, Gfinity adding it to their Elite Series, and FACEIT and NBC hosting a 2v2 Universal tournament --and we're only halfway through the year. With the influx of dedication to Rocket League eSports, organizations are taking note with familiar names like Cloud9, G2, NRG, Rogue eSports, and Renegades signing teams for the game left and right.

Gale Force Esports tops that list of teams, as they have vetted a European RLCS team since April -- and after some roster changes post-Season 3, they've been one of the teams to beat not only in their region but the world. Shortly after Northern Gaming took the crown of Season 3, GFE looked to reform anew as sights were set on the remainder of 2017 and Season 4 of RLCS.

Rebuilding

According to Jos "ViolentPanda" van Meurs:

"My old team didn't go that well. Gale Force and I decided to build a team around me. At first Kaydop was picked up because we wanted to team together, then Turbo came up and we tried him out at DreamHack: Summer in Sweden. It's been going very well."

Photo: Gale Force Esports

"Going well" is an understatement. GFE earned second place at DreamHack: Summer, with Pierre "Turbopolsa" Silfver as a try-out, first place at the second RLCS Summer Series, then second place at the and DreamHack Atlanta back to back.

"At the start of X Games I said three teams would be good: FlipSide, NRG and EnVyUs." ViolentPanda tells us, "I thought EnVyUs would be better than NRG but we kind of let it go in the finals. We should have won but we weren't focused that much."

Forever Second Place

While it seems they've been cursed with second place finishes, you have to consider the amount of work the Europeans have put in while only having a full roster for barely one full month. Considering travel to Sweden in June for DreamHack: Summer, then a small tour in the United States to X Games in Minneapolis and Atlanta for another DreamHack championship, earning second place seems like a pretty good takeaway from the latest competition.

Language Barrier

As a European team, all three members are from differently nationalities. ViolentPanda is Dutch, Courant "Kaydop" Alexandre is French and Turbopolsa is Swedish. With three different players and three different languages, you would think the team would have difficulty with in-game communication. But ViolentPanda says they've dealt with the language barrier due to little in-game communication:

"Turbo and I are pretty good at English, but Kaydop is a bit iffy sometimes. Most of the time you can understand him, but in game it doesn't really matter because you just shout out small things."

Developer Dedication

"Rocket League is growing enormously and we didn't expect it to get so big"

Rocket League is unique in the eSports spectrum, so Psyonix doesn't really have much to go off of when organizing Rocket League eSports. That obviously hasn't set them back with the outstanding organization for the Rocket League Championship Series, along with countless amounts of third party tournaments announced fairly regularly. Moving into Season 4, Psyonix announced a minor league series would be competing week after week along with the RLCS.

ViolentPanda does't think the new format will effect the team going into the new season:

"Rocket League is growing enormously and we didn't expect it to get so big. I don't think the different format will effect us that much because they will still have the top eight in the RLCS. In the passed the teams split up a lot because the level of play kept growing. Players that were good four months ago might not be so good now.

We're going to practice a lot and we expect to get top eight for season four. We don't focus on other teams that much, we just prepare for ourselves. Of course we want the finals but I think there will be many more tournaments to focus on other than RLCS."

Photo: Gale Force Esports

Needless to say the future is looking extremely bright for the European Rocket League team. After they recently took the top spot in Nvidia's Best Buddy Tournament, the teams' focus is now set on Season 4 of RLCS, the Universal Open, and the many other tournaments to come throughout the year. It's safe to say if they stay on this track, Gale Force will quickly become a world contender in Rocket League eSports.

Rocket League is Going to Be F2P in China -- Here's to Hoping There Won't Be an IP Block https://www.gameskinny.com/dkuz3/rocket-league-is-going-to-be-f2p-in-china-heres-to-hoping-there-wont-be-an-ip-block https://www.gameskinny.com/dkuz3/rocket-league-is-going-to-be-f2p-in-china-heres-to-hoping-there-wont-be-an-ip-block Sun, 30 Apr 2017 11:32:07 -0400 tofuslayer

This month, Psyonix announced that Rocket League would no longer be for sale through Steam. While it is not gone forever, the vehicular soccer video game will return as a free-to-play game exclusively for PC. This change is the result of a deal between Psyonix and Tencent, the Chinese company that owns Riot (the developer of League of Legends).

Rocket League fans around the world are now wondering if the game will no longer be available once its servers are on the other side of the firewall.

Chinese users have been unable to access online play -- so far

Currently, there are an estimated 30 million Rocket League players worldwide. However, very few users in China have been able to access the game's online play due to the country's ban on Google servers. A small number of players in China have been able to access online play using a VPN or proxy, but the connections are slow due to their ping count.

Now that Tencent has exclusive rights to the game, players outside of China are concerned that the tables will be turned on them, and that no one outside of China will be able to access online play for Rocket League.

What does this mean for users outside of China?

So far, Psyonix has made promises to existing and future players in China:

...to our friends who are already playing Rocket League in China... Though new players will no longer be able to purchase the existing version of the game on Steam from this point forward, the existing community will still have access to the game you paid for, in addition to all other currently-available features.

However, there are no guarantees for players in any other country. Existing Rocket League players outside of China would be much more reassured if they were promised the same deal as Chinese players. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen whether or not Tencent will make accommodations for international Rocket League players.

Hopefully, Psyonix will be looking to expand its user base rather than reduce it. We probably won't know anything until we get closer to the game's re-release date.

Do you think this is a good move on Steam's part? Let us know in the comments below!

So there you have it, my 5 games that will probably never come to the Switch. Would they be great on the system? Absolutely, but that doesn’t change the fact that I don’t make the decisions around here so bully. Sure, some have a better chance than others but you should take all of these as a dream scenario rather than a realistic one.

The Nintendo Switch will launch on March 3rd, 2017. What games would you like to see come to the latest console by Nintendo? Let me know in the comments below!

Dead By Daylight

\n
Chances of getting Switched: 5 percent
\n

Here we have the ultimate reach. I don’t think Dead By Daylight has a chance to come to PS4 and Xbox One, much less the Nintendo Switch, but the title of the article is A MAN CAN DREAM! Dead By Daylight is literally the game that was made for the Switch. Think about it, local multiplayer allows for up to 8 people to connect online. If that isn’t what Dead By Daylight was made for then I’m at a loss for words.

\n

Imagine you and some friends hanging out in a dark room playing Dead By Daylight on your own Switch. While the killer of the group is certainly having fun, the others can all freak out together so it’s great! I know it isn’t likely at all, but this game would be endlessly fun on the Switch.

\n

Edit: Dead By Daylight will be hitting PS4 and Xbox One in 2017...SO THINGS CAN HAPPEN PEOPLE!

Fallout

\n
Chances of getting Switched: 50 percent
\n

I will be supporting Skyrim for the Switch by purchasing the game. I want Skyrim to do well for one reason, show Bethesda that your titles will sell well on the Switch. I am glad that the Switch has a game as big as Skyrim even if it is a port of a 5-year-old game. It’s still a big deal and Nintendo should treat it as such.

\n

The Fallout series is incredibly popular and, like the Dark Souls series, would be perfect on the go. If Bethesda sees potential gain and profits from Skyrim selling well on the console, then they will return to do business with Nintendo. If Skyrim does well, then Fallout on the Switch will be a possibility.

Dark Souls 3 (or any Souls game for that matter)

\n
Chances of getting Switched: 25 percent
\n

It has been confirmed that Nintendo has a large list of developers helping them create content for the Switch. Among that list is From Software, the company responsible for the Dark Souls series of games. When the list of developers was revealed, all players of the Dark Souls Franchise revealed at the possible thought of Dark Souls on the go.

\n

Now, it’s important to note that developer support for the WiiU faded once the system launched and some may be cautious about that happening to the Switch. The Nintendo Switch will go over way better with the public than the WiiU did, but enough to merit a Dark Souls port? I don’t think so. Would love to see it happening but don’t get your hopes up.

Final Fantasy XV

\n
Chances of getting Switched: 30 percent
\n

Other than Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata saying that he would like to make games for the Switch, there’s not much to go on here. There were some rumors for a remaster of a past game for the system, but we’ll believe it when we see it. There are also plenty of other Square Enix games slated for release for Switch this coming year, so it's not like the two companies are unfamiliar with one another. Reading what the director of the game had to say, it certainly seems as if it can be done then it will be done.

\n

However, Final Fantasy XV is a very demanding game in terms of graphics and it remains to be seen if the Switch can handle such a game. If Skyrim is coming, then a game like this surely seems possible. Right?

Rocket League

\n
Chances of getting Switched: 50 percent
\n

Let’s start with THE perfect game for the Switch. Rocket league has been a major hit ever since it launched in the July of 2015. It has only grown bigger and bigger over time, and developer Psyonix has really created one of the best sports games ever with one of the quirkiest of ideas. So, since Rocket League spans across Xbox One, PS4, and PC, is there a chance it comes to Nintendo’s latest console?

\n

Since Rocket League is on 3 platforms, the hope is that it can come to a 4th. However, Nintendo needs to show it can handle online multiplayer with more stability than it has in the past. Fans of Nintendo don’t want a watered down Rocket League, they want the real thing. If it is at all possible and Nintendo creates a stable online service with the ability to play games such as Rocket League, then it will happen.

"},{"image":"http://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_360,w_640/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/s/w/i/switch-system-b2584.jpg","thumb":"http://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_85,w_97/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/s/w/i/switch-system-b2584.jpg","type":"slide","id":"147853","description":"

Nintendo, having recently unveiled the Nintendo Switch launch details, has started to fill out the slate of games that will release in the first year. There are plenty of big games coming such as Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at launch, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Edition in April, Splatoon 2 coming this summer and Super Mario Odyssey coming during the holiday season.

\n

However excited people may be, they will always look at the games list and think about that one game that they would love to see come to the Switch. While most of the games people are hoping for are extremely unlikely, some have a much better chance than others.

What Is It About Rocket League That's Making It Dominate Steam and PS4? https://www.gameskinny.com/5wmux/what-is-it-about-rocket-league-thats-making-it-dominate-steam-and-ps4 https://www.gameskinny.com/5wmux/what-is-it-about-rocket-league-thats-making-it-dominate-steam-and-ps4 Wed, 18 Jan 2017 07:00:01 -0500 Henri Herrera

Rocket League is a vehicular soccer video game developed and published by Psyonix. It was first released for Microsoft Windows and PS4 in July 2015, with ports for Xbox One, OS X and Linux being released in 2016. Soon after release, Rocket League became an official sponsored eSport, joining ESL (Electronic Sports League). In September 2015, Major League Gaming (MLG) announced the first season of the Pro Rocket League, which was held in September through early October.

During the reception, the game got mostly positive reviews and got a lot of players in a small amount of time. Psyonix got 120,000 players when they were expecting around 30,000. Design director, Corey Davis said in a GDC talk:

"I didn't know if we were going to cover server costs. Steam covered everything and they pay very quickly, which was important. I can't really imagine what we would have done if we'd shipped only on PlayStation 4 and got that many users."

No one can argue that Rocket League came out of nowhere, and allowed us to play with friends. Imagine playing with three other friends and just laughing at the TV, even if none are Soccer or Racing games fans.

Psyonix never spent a dime on traditional marketing, instead they sent copies of the unreleased game to Youtubers and Twitch streamers. Since 2008 we've seen Twitch streaming and YouTube gaming channels take over, with both now attracting huge, incredibly influential audiences. Davis said:

"Reddit was absolutely massive for us. The PS4 subreddit picked our game up during the beta and that's what blew us really wide, we think. The GIFs took over. We think that's where it all basically started"

Rocket League is a game where you can see one GIF and automatically understand what's happening, even if you've never used a computer or console. Unlike for example a MOBA, where you need to understand the characters, items, and skills to know what's going on. Just like with Soccer, you don't have to play the game yourself to appreciate a skillful shot, or a clever bit of teamplay.

Early versions of Rocket League included a crafting system, which had players collecting resources that were then used to craft various parts for their vehicles. It's not clear if these we're ever intended to be anything other than cosmetic changes (Rocket League, even now, is all about hats), but the system was being designed primarily with monetisation in mind. Davis said:

"Critically, it freed us up to focus on the game and not free-to-play systems. We felt like developing a game as free-to-play was turning us into monetisation designers and not game designers, we weren't really focusing on what was best for the player, but what was best for monetising the player."

Dropping the system made them delay some more months. Rocket League was originally set to release in either November or December 2014, but thanks to a new party system, dedicated servers, the team's desire for 60FPS and the drastic change in business model, it wouldn't appear until early July 2015.

The extra time also allowed the implementation of the party system, which was a new idea for it's developers. Corey Davis said:

"I don't know how to imagine Rocket League without it being easy to party up with your friends and queue. That's a big part of the appeal."

Dropping a bad idea and making sure to have one game that would make them proud of their work really paid off. It allowed Psyonix to deliver the entertaining and fun game that Rocket League is. It really doesn't matter if you're not a soccer or racing fan you can enjoy Rocket League and have a lot of fun.

Now you know the story behind this amazing game, and how a soccer game with small cars, that came out of nowhere, became a dominate force on Steam and PS4. Do you want to play with friends and have fun online or all sitting on a couch? Do you want to play competitively? Or is it more appealing  for you to have a game to play casually in that small time off? Then this game is for you.

Past having some basic familiarity with controllers or keyboards Rocket League is easy to learn for anyone, but to truly master the game and play competitively you will need a lot of time to learn the game though. This is what makes the game so special, the ease of pick up and play and understanding in what is happening. So if you're up to have some fun with a simple, well made game, hurry up and get Rocket League.

Here is a perfect mod for beginners who want to master their car’s abilities. This obstacle course will help you learn how to properly control your boost and aerials.

It removes the standard Rocket League training maps and gives you an infinite boost, so you can focus entirely on the car controls. If you hit either blue or white boxes, you will immediately return to the last checkpoint. And, if you successfully reach the end of the map, you will see the golden box that indicates the entrance to the next section.

How to Get Rocket League Splitscreen to Work on PC https://www.gameskinny.com/jq95r/how-to-get-rocket-league-splitscreen-to-work-on-pc https://www.gameskinny.com/jq95r/how-to-get-rocket-league-splitscreen-to-work-on-pc Sat, 03 Dec 2016 11:15:01 -0500 Caio Sampaio

In the early days of the video game industry, during the halcyon days of the arcade era, the only way for players to enjoy a great competitive or co-op experience was through local multiplayer.

The trend continued in the first generations of consoles, but after the internet became widely available to the mass market in the mid to late 1990s, gamers shifted their focus and started to play with and against each other online, rather than locally through a LAN connection.

Some players, however, still crave the inimitable experience of playing side-by-side with their peers, sitting on the same couch, playing on the same TV.

If you're one of these gamers and play Rocket League there's a way to get that old LAN-gaming, couch co-op experience right now. And we can show you how to enable it.

Enabling Rocket League's Split Screen Co-Op: It is Simpler Than You Think

First, you must note that the procedure to play in split screen mode varies if both players are using controllers, or if one one player is using a keyboard while the other is using a controller.

First, we will first go through a scenario where each player is using a controller. This configuration consists of two easy steps:

  1. Start the game with all controllers connected;
  2. on the title screen, the main player must press a button to continue to the main menu. As soon as the main player arrives on the menu screen, all other players must press “START” on their controllers. This enables split screen co-op.

Now, if one player is using a keyboard and the other player is using a controller, the procedure is a bit different, but still very simple:

  1. On the title screen, plug and unplug the second controller until the light on the controller shifts to “Player 2;"
  2. In the menu, the second player must press “START," in order to enable the split-screen mode.

These short (and easy) steps will allow you to play Rocket League in split-screen. If you have any questions or problems, let us know in the comments and we will be glad to help!

Rocket League's Origin Story Revealed in New Documentary https://www.gameskinny.com/zt0l8/rocket-leagues-origin-story-revealed-in-new-documentary https://www.gameskinny.com/zt0l8/rocket-leagues-origin-story-revealed-in-new-documentary Mon, 31 Oct 2016 08:33:53 -0400 Jeffrey Rousseau

Today, Noclip released a documentary featuring Rocket League. Part 1 of the video follows what led to the development of the game. Rocket League, developed by Psyonix, was released in July 2015 for PC and PlayStation 4. In February, the game was released for Xbox One.

In the same year of its release, it became an official eSport and joined the ESL. In September 2015, the first season of Pro Rocket League was featured in Major League Gaming. The title features cross platform support with PC players.

The documentary reveals that part of the game's concept originated from  an Unreal Tournament 2004 mod called Deathball. The team spent nearly a decade creating the game as they decided to gain experience and expertise.

Eventually, they released Super Sonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars in 2008 for the PlayStation 3. After releasing the game, Psyonix focused more on growing the studio and gaining more expertise. Once they became a studio that could self publish, they went on to create Rocket League.

Fans of arcade games, racers, and soccer can play Rocket League today.

Rocket Leagues Dives Deep With The New AquaDome Update https://www.gameskinny.com/b8g8n/rocket-leagues-dives-deep-with-the-new-aquadome-update https://www.gameskinny.com/b8g8n/rocket-leagues-dives-deep-with-the-new-aquadome-update Thu, 22 Sep 2016 06:19:55 -0400 Angie Harvey

Rocket League developer, Psyonix has announced that more free content will be heading for the popular car football game this October. The free October update, dubbed AquaDome, will send Rocket League packing for the ocean as the game is set to receive a new underwater themed arena, along with two brand new aquatic themed cars.

The AquaDome is the first standard arena that has been released since the Utopia Coliseum in August 2015, and is said to be inspired by the seven seas and the creatures that we find beneath the waves. The transparent glass dome is surrounded by bright corals and is teeming with aquatic life such as jellyfish, great white sharks and an array of different fish. The AquaDome arena can be found in all Rocket League playlists, including both casual and competitive.

Alongside the release of the AquaDome arena, two brand new premium DLC battle cars will be available at the updates launch. The two cars, Triton, a futuristic ocean sub, and Proteus, a scientific research vessel, will be available individually for $1.99 each.

While there is no official release date for the AquaDome update, Psyonix has promised that more information will be released as we get closer. If you haven't yet, check out the official AquaDome trailer below:

The Rocket League Rumble Update Debuts Today! https://www.gameskinny.com/9sfve/the-rocket-league-rumble-update-debuts-today https://www.gameskinny.com/9sfve/the-rocket-league-rumble-update-debuts-today Fri, 09 Sep 2016 06:42:35 -0400 Joshua Harris

Developer Psyonix dropped a new update for Rocket League today that introduces a gaggle of new features! After seemingly endless delays, SteamOS and Mac systems will now have access to the game. But, it should be noted that both versions will be considered "beta" because there are still a host of known bugs which Psyonix lists, such as:

  • There are occasional crashes when exiting from a match to the main menu
  • The statues in Urban Central do not display correctly
  • (Mac Only) Xbox 360 controllers won’t work. You will need a third-party driver solution to use them
  • You may experience intermittent blurring issues
  • The correct store page for DLC purchased through the Showroom doesn’t show up for Big Picture users. This is a Steam client-specific issue that Valve will be fixing in an upcoming patch

Currently, the only "official" version that is supported at the moment are copies used through the SteamOS Linux client. Older Macs will also have trouble running Rocket League if they do not have a dedicated GPU.

Fresh Loadouts

Per the community's requests, Psyonix is injecting "Car Presets" with the rumble update. There's up to 10 different slots for players to save their vehicle customizations on a "per team" basis, in addition to specified options to apply presets to the orange and blue team. The primary color palette has also been extended, giving new shades for the Orange team and a slew of green shades for the Blue team. And, for the more adventurous players, a button to randomize presets will be available as well.

Speak Your Mind

Following the Rumble update, players will have access to a Party Chat! With this new feature, they will be able to reach out to their teams in both the game and navigating menus. Teammates will be able to receive message both in and out of the game.

eSports, Crates, and Keys Oh My!

With an ever growing competitive sceneRocket League continues to evolve along with its players. The Rumble update will introduce "Crates and Keys", a system that spawns in something akin to a loot-crate occasionally with the typical post-game rewards in competitive play. However, they will need to purchase "Keys" that will allow them to unlock their crates, where players will have a chance to unlock exclusive garage items.

Crate items, or their duplicates, can be traded with other players after a cursory trading-hold period. One of the many items to come out of these crates will range from "Import" battle-cars (which function just like their original counterparts), exotic wheels, and animated decals.

Contents of the crates will always be visible regardless if the player decides to use a key. In addition, crates and keys can be traded to other players, Steam PC, and PlayStation 4. It is still unclear whether or not the Xbox One will be receiving this functionality as Psyonix has only recently reached out to Microsoft about implementing key and crate trading.

Keys will be available for purchase individually or in bulk; a single key will run $1.49, whereas bundles will run $5 for 5, $10 for 10, and so on. For players who are not too keen about the new key and crate system, an option exists in the options panel which will allow players to opt out of crate notifcations. Doing this will also hide drops from from the menu.

I Trade, You Trade, We Trade

The Rumble update for Rocket League introduces player-to-player trading, which gives drivers the capability of swapping a numerous combination of trading combinations. But buyer beware -- players can only trade across the same platform and are restricted from trading premium DLC items as well.

This Rocket Leagues Rumble update packs quite the punch, and Psyonix hopes that its game will have a little something for everybody. Make sure to send them feedback on either Twitter, Facebook, or on Reddit.

EA wants the next Rocket League, but they could've had the real thing https://www.gameskinny.com/q8thp/ea-wants-the-next-rocket-league-but-they-couldve-had-the-real-thing https://www.gameskinny.com/q8thp/ea-wants-the-next-rocket-league-but-they-couldve-had-the-real-thing Mon, 20 Jun 2016 10:20:07 -0400 Sonny Go

It's said that the new EA Originals initiative is for finding the next Rocket League. However, it turns out that EA could've indeed had the real Rocket League.

EA executive vice president Patrick Söderlund told IGN:

"Would I want to be the guy that found Rocket League? Yes. Would I want that to be an EA property? Of course I would like to."

Seemingly in response to this statement, Psyonix Studios design director Corey Davis tweeted this:

Undeterred by this, Psyonix would continue to develop the game and self-publish it four years later, finding resounding success.

As much as people like to go "tisk tisk tisk" at a big company like EA for missing a golden goose like that, this happens all the time. Major publishers that are also public companies are expected to be conservative due to having to keep shareholders happy, so less risks can be taken.

When something like Rocket League, a game about cars playing soccer, is passed up due to not looking viable at the time, you can't really blame them for not biting. It could either be due to cold feet or just being unable to see its true potential.

If Decca Records could reject The Beatles back in 1962, then anyone could make such a mistake.

However, with EA Originals, perhaps they're trying to bring back the creative magic that the 2007-2009 period brought about with new IPs like Mirror's Edge and Dead Space. EA is promising to give indie developers most of the profits through this program, so it's definitely to bank on new original IPs.

Decca would later sign the Rolling Stones, so it's not all bad.

What's New in Rocket League's Neo Tokyo Update https://www.gameskinny.com/ufzsb/whats-new-in-rocket-leagues-neo-tokyo-update https://www.gameskinny.com/ufzsb/whats-new-in-rocket-leagues-neo-tokyo-update Thu, 16 Jun 2016 04:47:34 -0400 Captynplanet_8219

Psyonix Studios is releasing "Neo Tokyo", Rocket League's largest update ever, for free on June 20th for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Along with a new arena set in the neon-colored mega-city of Neo Tokyo, the update will feature a slew of new features that are sure to get Rocket League fans excited.

What's Coming In "Neo Tokyo"

Neo Tokyo Arena

The arena which this Rocket League update is named after started off as Underpass, a popular arena in Rocket Labs. After some tweaks to streamline gameplay and a cyberpunk-inspired makeover, Underpass became Neo Tokyo.

Two New Neo Tokyo Inspired Vehicles

"Neo Tokyo's" two new vehicular additions, Masamune and Esper, will bring a bit of anime-inspired aesthetic into Rocket League's expanding list of playable cars. Masamune and Esper will be available for those who purchased the Rocket League Collector's Edition on June 24 in Europe and July 5 in North America. The two cars will be purchasable for everyone else on July 18th for $1.99.

The Re-Release Of Two Exclusive Vehicles

Along with Masamune and Esper, the two limited edition Battle-Cars Aftershock and Marauder will receive a visual update and also be available for purchase on July 18th for those who didn't receive them via the Rocket League Collector's Edition special deal.

The Showroom

"Neo Tokyo" will include a new feature called The Showroom, which allows players to browse all of Rocket League's purchasable content without having to leave the game.

Item Attributes

"Neo Tokyo" brings Painted and Certified Items to Rocket League, allowing players to customize their vehicle's look and keep track of their statistics as they duke it out on the field.

The first painted items that will be available in "Neo Tokyo" will be wheels and toppers. If you find a Painted item, you will receive a randomly chosen color chosen from a large selection of shades. Not all items will have Painted versions, but the list will undoubtedly increase as time goes on.

Certified items allow players to track specific statistics based on which particular item they discovered. The item will have a prefix that tells what stat it tracks -- and as you reach specific thresholds by performing whichever move the item tracks, the name of the item will change. For example, if you find the “Sniper Wizard Hat”, it will eventually become a “Skillful Sniper Wizard Hat" as you score more and more long goals.

Rare Items and New Trade-In System

New Rare and Very-Rare items which are obtainable through online play will become available in "Neo Tokyo". Along with the Rare items, Psyonix has announced that they will be including a Trade-In system with "Neo Tokyo". Rocket League players will finally be able to take five Uncommon or Rare items that they have copies of and trade them in for a single item of the next highest rarity tier.

Eight New Trophies and Achievements
  • Mad Scientist – Play a complete match in 3 different Rocket Labs Arenas (PS4 – Bronze, XB1 – 25 Points)
  • Icing the Cake – In Snow Day, score a goal from your own side of the ice (PS4 – Bronze, XB1 – 25 Points)
  • Left Wing, Right Wing – Win a Snow Day match with both the Blue and Orange Teams (PS4 – Bronze, XB1 – 25 Points)
  • Fast Break – Score at least 2 Dunks in the first minute of a Hoops game (PS4 – Bronze, XB1 – 25 Points)
  • Buzzer Beater – With 30 seconds left, win a game of Hoops in which you were tied or trailing (PS4 – Bronze, XB1 – 25 Points)
  • Budding Artist – Collect a Painted Item (PS4 – Bronze, XB1 – 25 Points)
  • One Better – Increase the level of a Certified Item (PS4 – Bronze, XB1 – 25 Points)
  • Certifiable – Earn Veteran status for your Certified Item (PS4 – Silver, XB1 – 75 Points)
The Beginning of Season 3 Ranked Play

The "Neo Tokyo" update will bring an end to Rocket League's Season 2 Ranked play and begin Season 3. Special boost animations will be the rewards for Season 2, and the quality of which boost player's receive is based on whether they achieved the rank of Prospect, Challenger, Star, or Champion.

Post-Game Spotlights

A new post-game screen will allow match winners to show off a bit by boosting, jumping, or spinning with their vehicles. Titles will also be awarded after the end of each game to victors. Here are some examples of the titles you can get by winning a match.

  • Aggressor – Most First Touches
  • Benchwarmer – Fewest Ball Hits
  • Prodigy – Score 3 or more goals
  • Speed Demon – Most Boost Pickups
  • Traitor – Score an own goal
  • Warden – Make 3 or more saves

New Quick-Chat Options

27 new choices for Rocket League's Quick-Chat will be released with "Neo Tokyo". Along with the new options, players will be able to quickly change their chat choices in the Options section of the Chat menu with ease.

What do you think of this update and all its new features? Let us know down in the comments!

Rocket League will be getting its largest update ever with the release of its "Neo Tokyo" update, which will be available for free on June 20th. The update will include a new arena in "Neo Tokyo", inspired by cyberpunk dystopias (*cough* Akira *cough*). The Neo Tokyo arena is an updated version of the multi-level arena Underpass, which was released as part of the "Rocket Labs" test map playlist.

What's Coming in "Neo Tokyo"

  • A reset to Rocket League's Competitive Playlist for the upcoming third Season
  • Over 20 new "rare" and "very rare" item types for post game drops.
  • "Certified" items which track in-game stats.
  • "Trade In" system that allows players to swap multiple common items for a rare one.
  • A new experimental arena named Pillars which splits the field into three lanes with two giant walls in the middle of the stadium.
  • The Showroom, which lets players view and purchase all of Rocket League's previous and upcoming premium DLC.
  • Painted items to offer color variation.
  • New post game celebrations for the winners to show off a little bit by boosting, spinning, or jumping with their car.
  • Quick-Chat options that expand player's choices when it comes to in-game communication.

Two Neo-Tokyo inspired cars, "Esper" and "Masamune" will follow the update, and be available for purchase on July 18th for $1.99. Collector's Edition owners will receive an early chance to snag the two additions to Rocket League's garage on June 24th in Europe, and July 5th in North America.

"Marauder" and "Aftershock", which were timed exclusives for Rocket League's retail release, will also be available on July 18th for purchase.

Rocket League Introduces Two New Exciting Features https://www.gameskinny.com/jonse/rocket-league-introduces-two-new-exciting-features https://www.gameskinny.com/jonse/rocket-league-introduces-two-new-exciting-features Tue, 07 Jun 2016 15:14:33 -0400 John Robson

Recently, new and exciting news has emerged from the developers of Rocket League. Later this month, Psyonix plans on introducing two features which expand on the item attribute system they unveiled last week. Specifically, they are expanding on the online item drop pool with new rare and very rare customisation items available. The items available will conveniently be useful with a new trade-in system which recently debuted.

Rare and very rare items are available with their next update; these are a new set of items which are only available through online competitive matches between players. Items include themed items inspired by their meta theme which will be revealed sometime next week. Psyonix claim this is a surprise and fans will love it but have divulged there will be rare decals for cars and some very rare boost trails.

Answering their fans' requests for multiple uncommon items in the garage over the last few months, the trade system mentioned above is their answer. It will be available in the next available patch, in June.

With the patch, players will be able to trade-in five duplicate uncommon and rare items at once to receive a single item of a higher quality. As a simple example, five uncommon items will result in receiving a single rare item.

(An image showing the trade-in system)

In order to access the trade-in system, after it's implemented, Psyonix recommends navigating to the "manage inventory" option in the garage sub-menu. From there, players simply select the items to trade-in, then confirm.

The developer mentions they will be planning to implement player-to-player trading in a later update. Some items, like those with painted or certified attributes, may become more valuable if traded with other players. The trade-in system, the developers add, is designed for players to remove unwanted or duplicate items. Finally, they advise caution when considering what players trade now compared to what players may keep for future trading opportunities.

There will be another reveal next week concerning the June update.

Rocket League conquers the world one game system at a time...is NX next? https://www.gameskinny.com/bfy3w/rocket-league-conquers-the-world-one-game-system-at-a-timeis-nx-next https://www.gameskinny.com/bfy3w/rocket-league-conquers-the-world-one-game-system-at-a-timeis-nx-next Mon, 06 Jun 2016 11:23:04 -0400 Eric Adams

Rocket League has become the out-of-left-field hit that nobody saw coming. PS4 and Xbox One owners have had all of the fun, while Nintendo fans have watched from the sidelines. Fortunately for Nintendo, the devs over at Psyonix seem to be toying with the idea of bringing the car soccer game to its new system, the NX.

Jeremy Dunham, VP, Marketing and Communications at Psyonix, recently said that while a full blown port to the NX is not on the table as of yet, it could be if they deem the NX a fit for the game.

Dunham revealed that bringing Rocket League to the NX would be identical to if they were to bring the title to the rumored PS4K. If it fits the NX, then it sounds as if Rocket League could be introduced to the Nintendo audience. However, Dunham did warn that time spent trying to make Rocket League for a new system would take time away from working and adding to the original game. Regardless, Rocket League has become a huge hit -- and if Psyonix deems the NX a fit for its phenomenally fun game then it will only get bigger.

What are your thoughts on Rocket League possibly being available for the NX? Do you also find it a little odd that we are talking about a game releasing for a system that has yet to be revealed? Will Rocket League take over the world? Rocket League is available for PS4 and Xbox One.

Battle-Cars Afterschock and Marauder Return in Rocket League https://www.gameskinny.com/wp91j/battle-cars-afterschock-and-marauder-return-in-rocket-league https://www.gameskinny.com/wp91j/battle-cars-afterschock-and-marauder-return-in-rocket-league Mon, 06 Jun 2016 07:51:53 -0400 Phil Fry

Indie game studio Psyonix posted today on their blog that two classic cars of their Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars game from 2008, the Aftershock and Marauder, will return in Rocket League as premium DLC.

Battle-Cars, the little-known predecessor to Rocket League, first released on PlayStation 3 to average reviews, and featured a similar style of unique soccer gameplay that Rocket League is known and loved for, with miniature model cars maneuvering a massive soccer ball to score goals.

The Marauder and Aftershock cars will retain their original thematic design. The Aftershock car will take on an aerodynamic frame associated with jet-planes, while the Marauder will be a bulky, utility-like SUV. Both vehicles will come with six stylish decals that can be seen in the trailer above.

The two cars will first release exclusively in the retail copy of the Rocket League Collector's Edition on July 5th, which will be available digitally July 18th.

The cars can also be purchased individually for $1.99, or the regional equivalence.

Rocket League Makes $110 Million Sales, cumulatively https://www.gameskinny.com/95lzw/rocket-league-makes-110-million-sales-cumulatively https://www.gameskinny.com/95lzw/rocket-league-makes-110-million-sales-cumulatively Thu, 02 Jun 2016 18:28:59 -0400 CalendarV

Rocket League, known as one of the most successful indie games from 2015, has earned $110 million with over 5 million units sold across all platforms. Considering the fact that the sales were $70 million last December, it has grown more than 36% in less then a year.

In April, the number of daily active users was 5 million, which consisted of 42% PS4, 36% PC, 22% Xbox One. Rocket League was free for people who had PS Plus for limited time, and this is the assumed reason why many players are playing Rocket League with PS4. PC, which has less percentage of players compared to PS4, has contributed the most to total sales because it was only sold as a paid game. 22% on Xbox One is still an impressive count because Rocket League wasn't even on sale until February of this year, which is 6 months later than other platforms.

For those who don't know, Rocket League is a soccer game that players get to play the sports with rocket attached remote control cars, and was developed with $2 million dollars.

Steam and Xbox One Crossplay Coming to Indie Smash Hit "Rocket League" https://www.gameskinny.com/qmjql/steam-and-xbox-one-crossplay-coming-to-indie-smash-hit-rocket-league https://www.gameskinny.com/qmjql/steam-and-xbox-one-crossplay-coming-to-indie-smash-hit-rocket-league Tue, 24 May 2016 09:01:41 -0400 DoubleVendetta

Rocket League, the ultra popular RC-car-meets-soccer game, is about to become the widest reaching cross-platform game in existence thanks to a patch scheduled to be pushed through at 6 p.m. PST (3pm EST). This patch will enable Xbox One and PC players to be matched together across both platforms. Combined with the PC to PS4 matchmaking that the game has had since launch, PC players will soon have a completely unrestricted pool of players available to them -- as soon as the boundaries of both Sony and Microsoft's respective consoles are lifted.

RC Cars+Soccer=Rocket League

While hardly alone in implementing some degree of cross-platform multiplayer -- Killer Instinct Season 3 and Street Fighter V, for example, both supported crossplay between PC and their console platforms at launch -- Rocket League now sits as the most open multiplayer game on the market. What this update does not do is allow Xbox One to PS4 matchmaking, though given Microsoft's announcement back in March, a future in which that is possible is not completely out of the question. Given Psyonix's track record so far, it wouldn't be entirely surprising for Rocket League to become the first truly cross-platform game either.

It's worth noting that the Xbox to PC matchmaking will be an optional toggle, so if Xbox owners prefer to remain nestled in the familiarity of their Xbox LIVE ecosystem, they'll have that ability, and on the PC side, this feature only works with the Steam version of the game. All in all, the news of this patch bodes well for the idea of a less inherently divisive gaming community, and the longevity of Rocket League's online multiplayer.

\n

Imagine being able to start with a blank video canvas or alter existing environments, add objects, items to play with, and characters. Designed objects and worlds are shareable, and other players can be invited into your creations.

\n

Using a Kinect device, your young game maker can create animation for their characters and even add voices to them. Creative older kids can dive in and begin to craft their own fun or anyone can download and play projects created by others.

\n

The folks at Project Spark also provide a lot of support and videos showing how to use the application and to build the best game possible.

\n

And best of all? There's NO charge.

Disney Infinity 3.0
\n

by Avalanche Software

\n

While we're on the topic of games combined with collectible toys, it's hard to avoid the Death Star in the room. Disney's Infinity is now in it's third generation with no signs of stopping.

\n

Younger players like the hands-on feel of having, collecting, or even trading figures with friends.

\n

With their recent acquisition of Lucasfilm and Marvel Comics, Disney has added their massive universes to an already massive open world experience.

\n

Players connect the Infinity platform to the X-Box One, then place their characters, which can be used in nearly any combination. Want to have Ironman, Princess Leia and Timon team up? Now, you can make your dream team of heroes and villains.

\n

Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Kit - MSRP: $39.99

LEGO® Dimensions
\n

A recent trend has been the combination of video games with collectible toys. This would include the original Skylanders, the very popular Disney Infinity series, Nintendo's Amiibo (a-me-bo) and Lego Dimensions.

\n

Additional toys, sold separately, allow new characters and vehicles to be added to games, unlock levels, find secret areas and create new combinations of adventures.

\n

Lego Dimensions adds another facet. Not only are players collecting characters and playing the game, they're actually building or re-building the vehicles and equipment used in the game.

\n

Snap together the Batmobile and place it on the portal stand... viola! The Dark Knight's ride appears in the game for characters to tool around in.

\n

The Starter Set also includes:

\n
    \n
  • LEGO Toy Pad
  • \n
  • Bricks to build the LEGO Gateway
  • \n
  • 3 LEGO minifigures (Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle)
  • \n
  • LEGO Batmobile vehicle
  • \n
\n

Lego's other titles have always been favorites for players of all ages with a variety of worlds to play in like Star Wars, DC Comics, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ghostbusters and most recently Jurassic World.

Lego Dimensions Starter Kit - MSRP: $79.99

Additional characters and mini-sets range from $8-$29

Child of Light
\n

Saying this UbiSoft game is a side-scrolling platformer and RPG does nothing to describe the experience of leaping into a lush fairy tale painted with a watercolor palette. Each level plays upon light and shadow, as is the game's theme, and looks like a Grimm story brought to life.

\n

Aurora is a princess taken from her home at a time when darkness threatens to consume everything. She sets out to find the moon, the stars and the sun and return the light to stop the Umbra, the Queen of Darkness.

\n

With the help of a firefly named Igniculus, Aurora sets out across mythical realm of Lemuria. Watching Child of Light reminds me of turning pages in some kind of animated storybook. The visuals are layered and stylish but kids who've played other classic platform games should acclimate just fine.

Unravel
\n

Next is a curious and stunningly beautiful platform puzzle-solving game from Coldwood Interactive and Electronic Arts

\n

Yarny is a small fuzzy creature made of yarn. As he moves through the environment, the player can have Yarny use parts of himself to perform tasks, solve puzzles, avoid enemies, and get around obstacles in his path.

\n

Using his strings to build bridges, swing across openings, grab things etc. can deplete Yarny, so players must be careful to keep him going. His mission is gathering memories by earning badges for his successful outings.

\n

The world Yarny moves through is gorgeous to look at and his journey challenges the brain not the trigger finger.

Just Dance Disney Party 2
\n

So often parents worry their kids spend too much time on the couch and not enough being physically active. Also, what can kids do to stay active on those rainy or snowy days?

\n

The Just Dance series uses the X-box One Kinect* as players imitate dance moves acted out on the screen. Imagine the old Dance Dance Revolution game, but without a floor pad. Characters on the screen perform to the music and you score by how well you perform the moves and keep up.

\n

Disney Party 2 uses songs from The Disney Channel's most popular kid series and TV movies like:

\n
    \n
  • Austin and Ally
  • \n
  • The Descendants
  • \n
  • Girl Meets World
  • \n
  • Girl vs. Monster
  • \n
  • K.C. Undercover
  • \n
  • Teen Beach 1 and 2
  • \n
\n

If you have a houseful of dancing fools, there are several Just Dance titles to keep them rocking out new moves.

MSRP: $29.99

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2
\n

PopCap Game's world of Plants vs. Zombies sprouted first as a tower defense game where players tried to protect their Suburbia backyard from invading zombies by raising crazy attack plants to stop them.

\n

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare expanded the wacky battle by creating a three-dimensional world the player could move about in, lay out their yard, plant new creations and fight off zombie invaders.

\n

Garden Warfare 2 now ratchets up the battle another notch as players can play either side and even pilot the zombie's Zmechs, walking tank secret weapons.

\n

While the story is a war between the undead and monstrous plants, the cartoonish action and comic sense of humor makes Garden Warfare 2 a blast to play and numerous play modes keep the challenge coming.

\n

There's over 100 different plants and zombie characters to use in your armies. Team up for 2, 3 or 4 player Co-Op mode or pop online for Player-vs-Player mode with up to 24 competitors.

\n

MSRP: $59.99 or $69.99 for the Deluxe Edition.

Rocket League
\n

So, what would playing a giant game of soccer be like if played by rocket-powered cars? Simple premise. Insanely fun.

\n

Based on the PS3 game Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars that Psyonix originally published independently, this next-gen version ramps up the thrills with customizable cars, "mutator modes" (to alter gravity, ball size, physics), and plenty of DLC (more cars, various paint jobs, trick tires, and new maps).

\n

The critically-acclaimed, award-winning game has been called "highly addictive", "the right mixture of chaos and precision", and "one of the most entertaining multi-player games of the year (2015)." After huge success on PCs and Playstation 4, Psyonix is adding an X-box One version this summer.*

\n

The basic premise makes Rocket League easy to pick up for younger drivers, but the level of detail means that older kids will be far from bored. Learning how to make precise moves and trick jumps or flips with the cars is an acquired skill. In fact, there is a dedicated Youtube channel where players can show off their driving and goal-making skills.

\n

Split-screen action allows for sibling rivalries as well as online play for more intense competition or a single-player Season Mode that uses computer controlled cars for teammates or opponents.

\n

MSRP: $29.99

Trackmania Turbo
\n

Just released in March, Trackmania Turbo by Ubisoft features high-speed action, mind-bending tracks and vivid environments to engage younger racers while it still challenges veteran drivers.

\n

The insanely wild courses reminded me of the Speed Racer movie as your car defies gravity, flips, jumps and hugs impossible turns at high speed.

\n

With over 200 unique racetracks (yes, over 200), the experience won't get old fast. Older kids can create with Track Builder for making new thrills and can even post their finished creations online for others to try.

\n

Family members can challenge each other in head-to-head race events or go online for massive Player-vs-Player Racing. Ubisoft's Double Driver Challenge takes Co-Op play to a whole new level as two players must match move for move to control a single car and keep it on the track.

Minecraft
\n

by Mojang and Microsoft

\n

The first selection is one you may already be familiar with, but still a classic. Though nearly 5 years old, the quintessential sandbox builder game Minecraft continues in popularity. It's simplicity, combined with open-world play and layers of complexity keep millions coming back. It's also sprouted a mobile app and most recently a spin-off, Minecraft: Story Mode.

\n

Online Minecraft has become it's own universe with sites and Youtube channels dedicated to the creations players have made, start up seeds, downloadable outfits, custom bricks, as well as favorite things to do or best places to go in the game, etc.

\n

It's the ability to jump right in as a single-player, co-op or online session that means everyone can experience the game as they want. Take on the challenge of Survival Mode, or tinker in Creative, or just be social on someone's server.

Staring at a wall of game titles in a store or browsing page after page online can be daunting when trying to find an age-appropriate but fun X-Box One game for younger players.

\n

Though a gamer and a pirate amazon, I'm a parent first. So, I understand the struggle of knowing what's okay for kids to play that's not too intense, too scary or too mature for their game time--especially since many X-Box One popular titles are shoot'em ups, fighting games or horror.

\n

Here's some of the most popular E Rated and E-10 Rated games out there. E Rated meaning a game is suitable for Everyone; no naughty language, over the top violence, or graphically frightening images. The E-10 rating is meant for older kids and normally means there might be a crude joke or two (like fart humor) and the action might be a little more intense.

\n

Some of the titles have been around a little while, but you just may have not seen them. A few are fairly new and might be good upcoming gift ideas.

\n

Prices listed are the everyday prices averaged from several gaming stores, big box stores and online shopping. Some comparisons can find the best deals.
