Started in 2013 as a spiritual successor to the 2002 GameCube game Eternal Darkness, the Kickstarter for Shadow of the Eternals failed to meet its goal and went into developmental hiding. But just last week, Denis Dyack, writer and director of both games, has stated Shadow of the Eternals is back in development, releasing both a new trailer and some new gameplay footage.

Denis Dyack has also stated they will be using a new form of business model since the Kickstarter had failed, but he's optimistic about the options available to them. He is now in charge of a new company dubbed Quantum Entanglement Entertainment, which will be overseeing the new development for Shadow of the Eternals.

Unfortunately, other details haven't been revealed as of yet, as Denis Dyack and his company wishes to have all the specifics set before releasing more about the game. It is also unknown whether the game will continue to be only for the Wii U, or not at all.

Denis Dyack also runs a YouTube channel called The Quantum Tunnel, which covers abroad range of topics from games and movies to actual quantum physics.

Shadow of the Eternals - a game said to be the "spiritual successor" to the amazing Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, has seen its fair share of ups and downs. From starting off with a confusingly ambitious crowd-funding campaign to cancelling it and laterstarting another with a lower funding goal, the developers at Precursor Games still could not garner enough interest in the game to reach full funding.

Despite not reaching their goals they still decided to continue development of the game with plans to release it on the Wii U and PlayStation 4. They also even managed to gather enough interest to have the game Greenlit on Steam, however it was recently announced that the project has officially been put "on hold."

The announcement was made by Denis Dyack, Chief Creative Officer of Precursor Games, on their official forums:

It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to put the Shadow of the Eternals project on hold. We are very happy with what we have accomplished both as a group and with the community. The community has blown us away and was the one thing that kept us going through it all - we cannot thank you enough.

Many of us will be taking a break. For those who are not aware, we all worked on this project as a labor of love and self financed 100% of everything for a over [sic] a year to try to make Shadow of the Eternals a reality. Although we did not succeed on doing this, we succeeded in making many friends and starting something that we hope provided value for those involved. We have no regrets.

He also went on to say that the project isn't dead, but rather: "We feel it needs a rest too. We have all agreed as a group that when and if the time is right we will get together and start it up again."

While it would be nice to see the game come to fruition, it seems like fans will have to wait. How long remains a mystery, but in the meantime they at least have Eternal Darkness to satiate their hunger for a little while.

Darkness has continued to stagnate.

Once again, the ‘spiritual successor’ of GameCube cult classic Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem manages to throw a new curve ball into the long-frothing mass of fan confusion.

Shadow of the Eternals by Precursor Games has been limping along trying to gain enough of a fan following to warrant the public crowdfunding of the enormously expensive venture. As of this writing, with 14 days left, the combined Kickstarter and Paypal crowdfunding campaign has made $284,497 (about 19% of their $1.5 million goal).

I guess if you thought about it, this might not have come as much of a surprise.

We’re shutting it down... kinda...

Today, Paul Caporicci and the Precursor team posted a new message on the game’s Kickstarter announcing that they would ‘temporarily’ take down both of the Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaigns.

The reasons why are vague. Extremely vague. And from the implications of ‘temporary’, it doesn’t sound like it’s because Nintendo started to thrust dollar bills at the screen demanding that Precursor take their money. As posted on their Kickstarter:

“Since we announced this Kickstarter campaign we have seen more support from our community than we ever hoped for. Along with this support has come a host of a new exciting opportunities that will make the game better than we envisioned. As a result, we have chosen to temporarily take down the Shadow of the Eternals crowdfunding campaigns on both Kickstarter and our own website on Thursday, June 6.

This doesn’t mean we’re going away – far from it. We’ll be relaunching the Kickstarter in just a few short weeks with a reveal of these exciting new developments.”

Oh. Okay.

Well I can see why the company would want to take things back to the drawing board, since the prospects are grim that 14 days will magically net them over $1.2 million.

Well, what else can they do?

Many wary fans hold the presence of Denis Dyack, founder of Silicon Knights, and current chief creative officer at Precursor Games to blame for the industry and player public’s lack of interest in funding the project. Held chiefly to blame for Silicon Knights’ fall from celebrated studio to industry laughingstock, Dyack’s name featuring prominently on the project probably hurts more than it helps.

I’m sure it’s possible that the drawing board might involve Dyack’s name chucked into the trash. But I doubt it.

No, if you ask me, it will involve a great deal of excitement and hyperbole, all the while trying to snatch enough time (while holding onto waning public interest) to “retool our campaign and continue development” in order to find some new way of selling essentially the same thing. The step back from Kickstarter and crowdfunding is only to stave off the inevitable failure that was doomed to come in 14 days, by announcing it as a voluntary withdrawal. They weren’t fired; they resigned, honest.

Now, perhaps I’m being cynical.

It could be true. There really could be exciting new developments that will be a huge game-changer for Precursor and the oft-discussed Shadow of the Eternals. I can certainly hold out hope for it.

But it doesn’t sound like a fat cheque. And that’s what Precursor needs right now more than anything.

They’ll be back to their internet panhandling soon enough. I’ll keep you posted if, in fact, there is any new significant change to the project.

Shadow of the Eternals Developer Launches Ambitious (and Confusing) Kickstarter Mon, 13 May 2013 23:01:31 -0400 Stephanie Tang

Darkness has returned.

If you’ve ever owned a GameCube, chances are you’ve heard of Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. It was a mature horror game that could and did stand toe-to-toe with Resident Evil and Silent Hill sequels, and which became a cult classic almost immediately. The distinctive ‘Sanity system,’ a mechanic that changes the game depending on how strong your grip on reality is, was so unique it’s filed with the US Patent and Trademark office as patent #6935954.

Controls were a little clunky, which is understandable because it began development as a title meant for the N64. However, it was the story that enveloped you, taking you through 20 centuries seen through the eyes of 12 different protagonists.

“Spiritual Successor”

Fast forward back to today, where elements of Shadow of the Eternals, the “spiritual successor” to the 2002 Eternal Darkness, were created at game developer Silicon Knights (the makers of the original) and then sold to new developer, Hamilton, Ontario-based Precursor Games.

This is where things start to get a little messy: Precursor Games is headed by Paul Caporicci, who was laid off from Silicon Knights in July of last year, and its chief creative officer is Denis Dyack, the founder of Silicon Knights. Dyack once proudly described his role in SK as a “benevolent dictatorship” and former employes (kept anonymous in this Kotaku article) have said:

He runs his company like a high school gym class or football team... He sets examples of those who offend him. He is incapable of celebrating others’ success. He is irrationally competitive to a fault; for example, he has to sue Epic Games and gloat about it online. [In his mind] you’re either for him, or against him.”

Former employees have held Dyack to blame for some of the reasons why a celebrated studio backed by one of the richest game publishers in the world could produce the horrible trainwreck of generic mediocrity that was X-Men: Destiny. In the same Kotaku article:

"I distinctly remember a theater review of the ‘Chinatown' level, which was so broken that it was completely unnavigable, even by the lead designer playing it," a source says. "Dyack's only note was that the ‘lights should be more red.' In another instance, he thought the final boss fight should be interrupted by ‘a challenge room'—his favourite thing from Too Human."

Another source recounts an anecdote from a different theater review. "The game was an unplayable disaster [in the review], but he got fixated on a static mesh of a non-interactive grey truck in the background. He gave the company a 20 minute lecture on the fact that he'd never buy a grey truck; he wanted it painted red." Accordingly, some SK employees sniggered behind their backs at Dyack: "We jokingly coined the phrase ‘paint the truck!' for other ridiculous, off-the-hip ‘executive orders' that sprang forth from Denis' mouth," says the same source. "Incidentally, I played the game after release... the truck is still grey."

In spite of this, Dyack’s presence on the creative team, along with Caporicci’s assurances that the company is in “constant communication with [Nintendo]” is one of the main reasons why the company’s latest Paypal crowdfunding endeavor has garnered so much attention. At the time of writing this article, Precursor has made about 10% ($156,340) of it’s $1.5 million goal with 24 days left to make the rest.

The Move to Kickstarter

This is where it gets messy again. Despite that fundraiser having quite a ways to go, Precursor Games has now launched a Kickstarter campaign as well, for $1.35 million. As of this writing, the Kickstarter has made a little more than 1% ($18,320) with 36 days left to go. The existence of both options has been confusing for fans, particularly with official announcement that the two campaigns would run concurrently.

From the looks of it though, the official funding endeavor has been moved to Kickstarter, where the $150,000 already made through the Paypal crowdfunding has been taken off the Kickstarter total. The Paypal option exists only for those who don’t want to support Shadow of the Eternals through Kickstarter. That is, the goal amount is still $1.5 million, not $2.85 million.

The company has come out to assure fans that if the $1.5 million goal is not met, all pledges and donations will be refunded from both campaigns. As it stands though, whether or not the target amount can be made in a matter of weeks, not months, is highly debatable.
