Silent Hill 2

\n

As seen on this list, certain games increase in value because of their age or lack of availability. However, in the case of Silent Hill 2, the game jumped in value because it's just so damn good.

\n

Silent Hill 2 is not only considered the best entry of the Silent Hill franchise, but many would also argue it's the best survival horror game ever made.

\n

Not only are general game collectors trying to get their hands on factory sealed copies to complete their collections, but Silent Hill fans are also spending big money for brand new copies.

\n

Thing is, finding a sealed copy of the game is tricky since so man people bought the game to actually play it.

\n

The Greatest Hits version of Silent Hill 2 is worth around $150, but a factory sealed copy of the original version of the game sold for $213 this past September.

\n

---

\n

And there you have it; the most expensive horror games of all time -- so far.

\n

Those who want to possibly dip their toe into video game collecting will have to save up quite a bit of money to complete a collection, that's for sure. The next best option is to wait for the collector bubble to burst and see prices on these games fall to their deaths.

\n

But that might be a long, long time.

\n

Let us know if you'd be willing to pay these horrendous prices for these horror games in the comments below.

Rule of Rose

\n

Rule of Rose is another PlayStation 2 game that is surprisingly rare and could easily be one of the newest games to see a severalfold increase in value since its release date.

\n

The game takes place in an abandoned orphanage in England during 1930. This, of course, means dealing with creepy kids, which is never fun.

\n

Maybe that was one reason why critics didn't care for the game. Another victim of lackluster sales, the Rule of Rose was gutted when it released two months before the release of the PlayStation 3.

\n

Earlier this month, a factory sealed copy of Rule of Rose sold for $412.

Haunting Ground

\n

With every new generation of consoles comes another generation considered to be "retro." This means PlayStation 2 games are now becoming rarer and increasing in value. One example is 2005's Haunting Ground.

\n

Considering a spiritual successor to Clock Tower 3, Haunting Ground was another survival horror game that saw players controlling Fiona and her brave doggo, Hewie. Like other games in the Clock Tower series, Haunting Ground didn't blow critics away when it came out -- but fans loved it.

\n

However, because of lower than expected sales, there are not many copies of Haunting Ground floating around. That means prices for the game have surged on eBay.

\n

One factory sealed copy of the game sold for $260 back in August.

Uninvited

\n

In the 80s, ICOM Simulation created multiple point-and-click adventure games for Macintosh computers, which were then ported to the NES by Japanese publisher Kemco. The trifecta of adventure games ported were Déjà Vu, Shadowgate, and Uninvited.

\n

Like many horror games, Uninvited is set in an old mansion. Players search for their sister while trying to avoid an array of traps, ghosts, and other entities -- all hellbent on killing you.

\n

The game will also kill your wallet as a brand-new copy of Uninvited can go for $233.

Enemy Zero

\n

Due to their high quality and low availability, many rare games on the Sega Saturn were among the first to dramatically increase in price following the console's demise. Games such as Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III and Dragon Force soared in price as collector's scrambled to add them to their collections.

\n

Enemy Zero, while not considered one of the best games on the system, became one of those games.

\n

The second entry in the D franchise, Enemy Zero is much different than the previous game. Here, players have to contend with invisible enemies using only sound to find their location, whereas the original was a more point-and-click affair.

\n

To get a copy of Enemy Zero will cost approximately $150.

A Nightmare on Elm Street

\n

Before Dead by Daylight and its multiplayer horror action became popular, it was Nightmare on Elm Street on the NES that pitted four players against Freddy Krueger.

\n

Developed by the license shovelware extraordinaire LJN, Nightmare on Elm Street has players control up to four teenagers who need to collect Freddy's bones a la Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

\n

The game itself is nothing remarkable -- as is the case with most games LJN made during the NES era. However, there has been a surge in popularity for speedrunning the game in due to its unique four-player gameplay.

\n

A complete copy of the game can fetch close to $200 on eBay.

Chiller

\n

Chiller is one NES game that many owners of the console never saw. Originally released in the arcades in 1986 and then ported to the NES in 1990, Chiller is a light gun game unlike any other.

\n

In the console version, players kill monsters in five stages, which is different than the arcade game where players tortured people strapped in various medieval devices. Still, for an NES game, it's quite graphic.

\n

The reason why NES owners didn't get their hands on a copy of Chiller back in the 90s was that it was an unlicensed game, and unlicensed games meant (and mean) BIG money.

\n

A copy of the game with a box, not even brand new, went for $124 last month.

Splatterhouse 3

\n

Another classic series full of monsters and gore is Splatterhouse. Beating demons to a bloody pulp may not seem like a big deal these days, but back when it came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, the game was controversial and popular.

\n

Unfortunately, Splatterhouse 3 also released just ahead of the Sega 32X in the U.S. and the Sega Saturn, making it a game that was easily looked over. It also didn't help that the marketing behind it was lackluster and any hype it had quickly died off.

\n

The result is that these days, new copies of Splatterhouse 3 typically go for $150-$200 on eBay.

Clock Tower

\n

Clock Tower on the PlayStation is the second game of the series, but the first to make it across the Pacific. Its localization was likely due to the success of the first Resident Evil, which was released the year before.

\n

Despite its creepy, foreboding atmosphere and terrifying antagonist, Clock Tower didn't wow critics when it came out in 1997, but it had the kind of scares horror fans loved, making it a much-revered cult classic.

\n

Clock Tower became one of the PlayStation's sleeper games and eventually became (very) hard to find. A collector looking to complete their horror collection today will need to put up some big bucks as a sealed copy of the game went for $500 in September.

Castlevania

\n

Castlevania on the NES is undoubtedly a classic. It was the start of a long-running franchise that would still be in development if Konami was willing to start making new games again (ahem).

\n

But that's not why we're here; we're here to talk about the absurd price this game can fetch on the collector's market.

\n

The first adventure of Simon Belmont had gamers take on iconic horror characters such as Frankenstein's Monster, the Mummy, and, of course, Dracula himself. That made is a hot commodity then and most certainly one now.

\n

The original Castlevania is not a hard game to find, but obtaining a brand-new copy is.

\n

A 32-year-old sealed game is worth its weight in gold, especially if it has a horizontal seam, or H-seam. And that's the key; the seam is where the factory that produced the cartridge sealed the package, and it's an indicator of whether a game has been resealed or not.

\n

Unfortunately, some scammers have found ways of recreating the H-seam, thus causing additional concern for collectors.

\n

However, last month, one sealed copy of Castlevania sold for $449.95. And one rare, sealed Dracula variant sold for a whopping $699.99 in 2016.

Resident Evil: Gaiden

\n

Although it isn't the first survival horror game, many would consider Resident Evil to be the game that put horror games in the public conscious. Starting in 1996, the franchise sold millions of games in multiple console generations and earned Capcom billions of dollars.

\n

However, one game in the series didn't sell so well, making it a valuable collector's item.

\n

Resident Evil: Gaiden came out in the U.S. in 2002 for the Game Boy Color. When it released, reviewers didn't quite know what to make of it and gave it below average scores (we're talking 4/10s, here). This, of course, resulted in the game not selling all that well.

\n

But a game selling poorly is music to a collector's ears as copies of Resident Evil: Gaiden can now go for $200-$300 for a sealed copy. That's a far cry from the original price of $29.99.

"},{"image":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_360,w_640/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/m/o/s/most-expensive-horror-games-2b6fd.jpg","thumb":"https://res.cloudinary.com/lmn/image/upload/c_limit,h_85,w_97/e_sharpen:100/f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto/v1/gameskinnyc/m/o/s/most-expensive-horror-games-2b6fd.jpg","type":"slide","id":"189807","description":"

There's never a bad time to play some retro horror games.

\n

Instead of listing out the best or lesser-known titles designed to scare, this list will instead shock with the ridiculous prices these games fetch on eBay.

\n

Thanks to an inflated collectors market, vintage games have shot up in price in recent years. Even mediocre games have increased in value several times due to a growing group of individuals attempting to complete their respective libraries.

\n

Whether from the Sega Genesis PlayStation 2, Gameboy, or Sega Saturn, these are the most horrifyingly expensive horror games of all time.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

\n

For those of you who have played this epic title, you know exactly why it's a horror game. For those who don't, allow me to explain.

\n

You have three days to save the Earth before an enormous moon crashes into it, killing all life. Besides the fear of running out of time, there are classic Zelda monsters like Redeads, who still invoke fear in the hearts of those who play Majora's Mask to this day.

\n

As far as the world design goes, I am sure that when I say, "Ikana Valley," those of you who played the game know what I mean... if not, just take a look. It's enough to make you pretty darn scared:

\n

\n

The Music Box House, located in Ikana Valley. It's surrounded by a bunch of creepy Gibdos.

\n

On top of that, this game is considered to be the most haunting, depressing and scary Zelda game ever released. Why? Well, here are a few reasons:

\n
    \n
  • One of its major themes is the five stages of grief. Denial, Bargaining, Anger, Depression and Acceptance. Check this video out for more info.
  • \n
  • Link is mostly surrounded by characters that are either dead, that are dying, that are in depression or have suffered some kind of loss.
  • \n
  • Majora's Mask itself isn't exactly the most festive mask to wear. Just look at the slide image!
  • \n
  • It's also the home to BEN drowned, so there's that!
  • \n
\n

On a side note, the only jumpscare that I can think of is when Link puts on a mask to transform into Fierce Deity, Deku Scrub, Goron, or Zora. However, that is expected as soon as the mask is put on, so you know it's coming up.

\n

---

\n

There are many more horror games out there that can give a good scare without those terrible jumpscares. What are some of those games? Feel free to let us know down in the comments!

2. Bloodborne

\n

Bloodborne isn't just an RPG: It can also be considered a horror game. And that is for a good reason. The game has 'horror' written all over it. The wretched beasts that roam the streets of a cursed city, the hideous, nightmarish bosses that you overcome to survive and of course, the creepy victorian landscape.

\n

\n

Just take a look at the above image and judge for yourselves. Seriously, this isn't a land of cupcakes, rainbows and ponies! It's a haunting atmosphere that creeps into your bones and rests there! It's a place where the sun don't shine, and where ever-present danger lives in just about every corner.

\n

Apart from the landscape, players need to be careful what items they use and what armors they wear in order to increase their survival rate... Yep. Bloodborne is a survival-horror game, one that takes inventory management to new, terrifying extremes.

\n

An occasional dog might jump out of the bushes, or a villager might appear out of a corner to attack you, but they are just there to surprise you and don't act as agents of fear, really...the entire game handles that instead!

3. Resident Evil 4

\n

Considered by many to be the greatest Resident Evil title of all time, this one is yet another classic in the horror genre that gives you a good scare without any cheap tricks up its sleeves.

\n

The plot is simple: Leon Kennedy has to rescue the president's daughter and bring her safely home. But of course, that's not going to be as easy as it sounds.

Not only is there is a village of full of villagers straight out of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre trying to kill you, there's a giant castle full of possessed cult members and a mysterious island where things, well, get weird.

\n

Resident Evil 4 is all about atmosphere. You've seen chainsaw-wielding enemies and giants before, but this game becomes scarier the farther you progress through it -- and the creepy atmosphere just hangs over you like a fog, making everything worse.

Oh, and don't forget the Iron Maidens! Yeah, nothing says creepy like Medieval torture devices mating with faceless demons ...

4. DOOM

\n

Considered to be the game that paved the way to modern first-person shooters, let's not forget that this classic FPS is also a horror game. To keep it short, DOOM is about a space marine fighting through hordes of demons after a teleportation device opens up a portal to hell -- on Mars! So not only is it scary enough you're battling hell-spawn, but you're doing it in SPACE!

\n

Of course, the atmosphere is terrifying, creating a dreaded sense of isolation and loneliness. Just you and a horde of hell-spawns. Alone. In Space. Let that sink in ...

5. Silent Hill 2

\n

Creepy atmosphere, darkened buildings, foggy streets and nightmarish monstrosities. Welcome to Silent Hill! Though the franchise has seen better days, Silent Hill 2 is still a classic for many, many horror fans.

\n

Saying Silent Hill 2 is haunting is a bit of an understatement: This title is especially unnerving because it follows a forlorn protagonist who journeys to Silent Hill to find his dead wife -- who visits him and brings him to this Hellscape. Needless to say, he encounters things from peoples' worst nightmares. Oh, and how can anyone forget about Pyramid Head? Hands down one of the most fear-inducing enemies from any game -- regardless of genre.

I mean, just take a look at him!

Let's be honest for a second here. Jumpscares suck. They are pointless, shock values that literally appear out of nowhere to scare the daylights out of you. As a matter of fact, they're not even scary! Even if you place a cute, cuddly kitten or puppy, and use that as a jumpscare, people will still be scared because, well, it came out of nowhere.

\n

This is why I have no respect for games like Five Nights at Freddie's and Slenderman. They are nothing but cheap and awful jumpscares just for the sake of being jumpscares...

Like in Five Nights at Freddie's, where the evil animatronic robots are roving about and you have to keep track of them via surveillance cameras scattered about ... BOOM! One comes out of nowhere for a jumpscare. Or in Slenderman, where you're just walking around and BOOM! There's Slenderman just standing there...

\n

Games don't need to have jumpscares to be considered horror games! And sometimes, jumpscares are just cheesy, anyway. So here's a list that showcases some great horror games that don't use jumpscares to deliver their terror.

Let's be honest -- at one point or another we've wanted to be someone else. Or at least wanted to dress just like them. Shoes, hair, clothes, jewelry. No matter what it was we wanted it, and whether or not they were real or fiction we found ourselves wanting to dress just like them.

Both in life and in games, some people are just naturally more stylish than others -- and in the world of horror games, despite horrific situations there's always a fashionable character to be inspired by.

Whether you're looking for an easy cosplay or want an everyday wearable look, keep reading as you'll be sure to find it in this horror game edition of Steal Their Style.

This drop waist long sleeve dress is perfect for any body type, not just a woman with a 12 year old's body. Even better, the style and color is perfect for transitioning into the upcoming cooler months. However, despite Alma's ability to strike immediate fear, this look on anyone else might even make a good first impression in a casual style interview (but, you might want to ditch the blood!).

Steal Eddie Gluskin's Style

Outlast: Whistle Blower

Admittedly, Eddie was a pretty disturbed character but his style for the most part was immaculate. In an asylum of deranged patients -- a good portion of them not even clothed -- Eddie was the best dressed. Much like Gluskin's personality, the all-blue ensemble oozed moody but meticulous. and it's worth stealing.

Steal Maria's Look

Silent Hill 2

When it comes to most horror game antagonists, while they are often stylish they are certainly no Maria. Silent Hill 2's Maria is undoubtedly a siren in regards to James' character. Her outfit blatantly screams red light district -- but unfortunately for her, the grey skies and forever fog in Silent Hill certainly isn't a place where her leopard print skirt can be appreciated. We appreciate it, though, and this is why it's a style to steal.

Steal Leon S. Kennedy's Style

Resident Evil 6

Resident Evil has no shortage of well-tailored characters, but Leon makes the list as he's had quite the stylish upgrade since his appearance within the 4th installment. Gone is the underarmor styled black shirt, and here today is a pop of color in the form of an orange shirt beneath a black button down and trendy moto jacket. This is certainly a wearable look for both cosplay conventions and everyday life.

Top Ten Storylines in Video Games https://www.gameskinny.com/o4lj0/top-ten-storylines-in-video-games https://www.gameskinny.com/o4lj0/top-ten-storylines-in-video-games Thu, 09 Jan 2014 15:19:50 -0500 Venisia Gonzalez

Many of us play our video games for all kinds of reasons, whether it be for its multi-player aspect, humor, brutality, as an escape, the campaign or just the name alone. I for one, am intrigued by a great storyline.

I must be a gripped to the edge of my seat, nail biting, hour by hour addict enveloped by a game's story (at least most of the time). I am a lover of the single player campaigns.

So here is my take on the Top Ten Storylines in Video Games:

10. L.A. Noire

A story that revolves around new detective Cole Phelps with the very corrupt Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), slowly after returning from service in World War 2. He is trying to right some personal demons thanks to his experiences. The cases you solve throughout his rise through various departments of the LAPD bring him some stunning realizations about his time in the military, who he spends time with and how they're affected. The story is based on how the crimes are investigated and solved by the player. The game is deep in its heavy plots and aesthetics of films from the 1940s and 1950s.

9. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Set during the Cold War-era of the Soviet Union, the story centers around FOX operative Naked Snake as he attempts to rescue a weapons designer, sabotage a superweapon, and assassinate his former defected boss. Throughout the story he learns the reasons behind his boss' defection and betrayal and begins to understand the decisions made but ultimately still must face his former boss on the battlefield. The game is told through cut scenes and radio conversations. Despite the 1960s feel, it has all the aspects of high tech.

8. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of The White Witch

This is a wonderful magical world with characters you care about. Once you start Ni No Kuni, you just cannot stop. It's a story about Oliver, a young boy from Motorville. He's good-natured, kind, pure, broken-hearted and that's part of its charm. While trying out a new vehicle designed by his friend Philip, Oliver almost drowns but is saved by his mother Allie who consequently dies from saving him. His tears of grief cause his doll, a gift from his mother, to come to life and reveals itself as a fairy named Drippy. Drippy tells Oliver that he's from another world where an evil wizard named Shadar has taken control. He also explains to Oliver that each person in his world has a "soul mate" - in essence a person with a link to someone in Oliver's world. It's with this knowledge that Oliver sets out on his adventure to find the link to his mother to bring her back to his own world. It's an adventure game of battling creatures called Familiars which you are able to collect. The Familiars can level up and equip weapons and armor. This game takes a bit from Pokémon which is delightful.

7. Alan Wake

A survival horror game that follows bestselling novelist Alan Wake as he tries to uncover the mystery behind his wife's disappearance during a vacation in the town of Bright Falls, Washington, all the while experiencing events from the plot of his latest book that he cannot remember writing that is coming to life. Alan Wake contains plot twists and cliffhangers as it's similar to a TV series. Its narrative, pacing, and atmosphere are primarily written by Sam Lake and is brilliant.

6. Halo Reach

This is a story around a squad of superhuman soldiers called Spartans and their defense of the planet Reach from the invasion by the alien race known as The Covenant. It's based on great struggle and sacrifice against overwhelming odds and it's the basis of this story that has led to the Halo series. It's how humanity has been backed into a corner by the ever encroaching forces of The Covenant and how the sacrifice and downfall of Reach was necessary for the survival of humanity.

5. The Walking Dead

A true gut-wrenching story of Lee Everett, a man on his way to prison, who is the unlikely hero who stumbles upon Clementine, a young girl whose parents were vacationing in another city when the zombie apocalypse occurred. Throughout their journey you meet vast characters that you grow to love or hate. The game's strengths are the dialogue and character development. The execution of each scenario is what makes this a must play.

4. BioShock

What can I say of this amazing story? Andrew Ryan is the perfect man who has built the perfect world, an underwater utopian city called Rapture. Believing he had found The Way, when in actuality Andrew Ryan created a society bent on hedonistic vanity, unchecked ambition and extreme moral enigma. It is exquisite in its depravity and the epic demoralization of the city is revealed through narrative devices called audio-logs found throughout the many levels. It's an artistic masterpiece thanks to Ayn Rand, Ken Levine, and John Galt.

3. Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2 starts off as a bizarre love story. James Sunderland is searching for his wife after receiving a letter from her on year after her death. It tells a complex story on different levels in which the way you play and interact throughout its sinister world has bearing. The spoken narrative of Silent Hill 2 leaves little doubt on the kind of man James Sunderland is. If you spend the game at half or less health you'll get a different ending. This is because the game thinks that James is suicidal. Hmm interesting. Every horrific creature in the game is a manifestation of the character James' twisted psyche and the physical representations are of his sexual hang-ups and guilt. At the end of this game you've lost all empathy for its protagonist.

2. Mass Effect Series PERIOD

Can I say this is a story that rivals many sci-fi epics like Star Wars? YES I CAN! This is Akira Kurosawa's (whom I adore) Seven Samurai except it's in space. The deep back story of each character and complex decisions made throughout brings an intense bond between the player and its characters. The player not only affects the overall plot but the many sub-plots and stories that occur simultaneously as the main plot unfolds. The fact that the decisions of the player carry on from one game to the next makes it an epic marvel with a huge dedicated fan base.

And My Top Pick....

1. The Last of Us

Yes, it's no secret that this is my favorite game and no wonder with so many naming this triumph by Naughty Dog as Game of the Year for 2013. This is epic story telling of two characters in a post-apocalyptic world. Joel, a man suffering from his grief, and Ellie, a 14 year old orphan, are the main characters in which every encounter develops the dynamics of their relationship. This is a brutal and human story that is realistic to its very core. Its cut scenes will have you glued to your seat. I fell in love with Joel and Ellie and so will you.

Well there you have it, my list of great storylines.

If you haven't checked any of these phenomenal games out, I highly recommend that you do.
