I remember the day I saw Pokémon 2000 in theaters. I was so excited. My dad took me to watch it, and he even suffered through sitting in the front row. The screen enveloped my field of vision. I felt as though I were right beside Ash in his quest to quiet the three legendary birds. My popcorn disappeared far slower than usual. (I would say it lay forgotten in my lap, but mmm...movie popcorn.)

“Disturb not the harmony of Fire, Ice or Lightning
Lest these Titans wreak destruction upon the world in which they clash
Though the water's Great Guardian shall arise to quell the fighting
Alone it's song will fail
Thus the Earth shall turn to ash
O Chosen One
Into thine hands bring together all three
Their treasures combined tame the Beast of the Sea.”

-- Pokémon 2000

For a majority of Pokémon GO players, Pokémon was our childhood. We played the games, watched the show, saw the movies, collected the toys, decorated things with stickers...the list goes on. Some fans did all of these, others only a few. There were even fans who only watched or played. But in the end, our shared fandom brought us together. One question I always remember was “What version of the game do you have?” And the answer was pretty important.

Now, the question of colors has taken on a new meaning.

Pokémon GO from Niantic Labs and the Pokemon Company has taken the world by storm. Quite literally. After bring released in several countries, the overwhelming response to the game led to weeks of server repair. One of the major components of the game is training and battling. Once a trainer reaches level 5 and taps a gym, Professor Willow arrives to discuss the three teams. The whole internet has learned of Teams Valor, Mystic, and Instinct (Or, you know, Red, Blue, and Yellow.) After choosing a team, trainers can then boost friendly gyms and battle rivals.

Unfortunately, as is the case for several team-based games that have a following on the internet, the flame wars began. Offensive memes mocking rival teams sprouted across pages, and what could have been friendly banter turned into hate-fueled vitriol. Gym battles became turf wars. The trolls were feasting on the chaos.

And then Seoxys6 sparked an old memory.

Inspired by the logos from the three Pokémon GO teams and the movie that introduced us to the legendary birds, Seoxys6 created a logo for Team Harmony that features Lugia as the mascot (as seen in the header). The design took the internet by storm, going viral almost immediately. Two groups have risen from the idea: Team Harmony and The Lugia Alliance. Two unique groups with one distinct goal—to unite the players of Pokémon Go.

Members of these groups encourage other players, share laughs, and talk Pokémon with fellow fans. The groups recognize that the game is meant to be fun and bring people together, not form cliques and insult each other. The Facebook page for the Lugia Alliance sums up their purpose succinctly:

“This is a community of Valor, Instinct, and Mystic. Each dedicated to keeping the teachings of Lugia. Should the legendary birds war against another, the world shall fall to ruin.”

An unofficial Team Harmony page puts it in simple terms for the players unfamiliar with Lugia and Pokémon 2000:

“Devoted to the betterment of Trainers and Pokémon alike, we in Team Harmony are here to play Pokémon GO in harmony with each other, regardless of team.”

Trainers who join these pages find a group filled with community posts regarding egg hatching, memes, brilliant fan art, and even naming games for new Pokémon. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with Pokémon fans coming together in what they love regardless of chosen team.

These trainers realize that the game is just that—a game—but the players are real people. Members have encouraged others to watch out for fellow trainers, team up to face down the darker side of the gaming community, and even help the community (such as walking shelter dogs while trying to hatch eggs or collecting litter while walking around town.)

With Pokémon Go’s rampant popularity, more people than ever are becoming aware of the franchise and those who love it. The entire world is watching us, Trainer. So will you add to the chaos, or join Team Harmony and the Lugia Alliance in making the game safe and fun for everyone?

Pokemon Go Unveils Team Leaders https://www.gameskinny.com/wj3v7/pokemon-go-unveils-team-leaders https://www.gameskinny.com/wj3v7/pokemon-go-unveils-team-leaders Mon, 25 Jul 2016 16:52:55 -0400 cactusjudy

When selecting one's team on Pokemon Go, all players have been greeted with so far is a short statement, legendary bird mascot, and silhouette of the team's supposed leader. Well, these leaders are mere silhouettes no longer; today, Niantic CEO John Hanke revealed the full images of the leaders of Teams Mystic, Valor, and Instinct at the company's panel at Comic-Con International.

Team Mystic's Blanche

Team Valor's Candela

Team Instinct's Spark

No further information on the leaders was revealed. (And I, for one, am still unsure about Blanche's gender, though I guess it doesn't matter since she/he/they is still the best #GoTeamMystic)

Hanke also revealed that the company is considering adding a breeding component to the game, though this feature has not yet been developed or even approved. Additionally, he answered player concerns about gym "poaching," where a new player takes over a gym right after a different player defeats it. The company are looking into player complaints, and hope to find a solution to this issue.

Pokemon Go was released in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States at the beginning of the month, and has since become a worldwide phenomenon with availability expanding to include Canada, Japan, and most of Europe.

Pokemon GO team leaders revealed at San Diego Comic-Con https://www.gameskinny.com/rdzkr/pokemon-go-team-leaders-revealed-at-san-diego-comic-con https://www.gameskinny.com/rdzkr/pokemon-go-team-leaders-revealed-at-san-diego-comic-con Mon, 25 Jul 2016 05:06:40 -0400 FlameKurosei

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con in California, Pokemon GO Chief Executive John Hanke has plenty to reveal about Niantic's popular game.

In particular, Hanke reveals the names and faces of the three teams of Pokemon GO, previously found as silhouettes on the iOS/Android title's selection screen:

From left to right, here is Team Instinct, Mystic, and Valor as shown on Pokemon GO's selection screen

Who are the team leaders?

The first is Team Instinct's leader, Spark:

Pokemon are creatures with excellent intuition. I bet the secret to their intuition is related to how they're hatched. You never lose when you trust your instincts!       --Spark

With spiky hair that stands on end like his electric Pokemon representative, Zapdos, Spark is Team Instinct's leader. He sports a bright orange hoodie and black jacket with his team's distinctive yellow highlights.

Spark believes Pokemon's strength comes from their birth, and encourages players to "trust your instincts".

The second is Team Mystic's leader, Blanche:

The wisdom of Pokemon is immeasurably deep. I am researching why it is that they evolve. With our calm analysis of every situation we can't lose!          --Blanche

With a slick blue trenchcoat and a chill expression, Blanche is the leader of Team Mystic. His team's Pokemon representative is the ice-typed Articuno of the legendary bird trio.

Blanche believes that "calm analysis of every situation" will help players succeed in their endeavors.

The third is Team Valor's leader, Candela:

Pokemon are stronger than humans, and they're warmhearted too! I'm researching ways to enhance Pokemon's natural power in the pursuit of true strength. There's no doubt that the Pokemon our team have trained are the strongest in battle!         --Candela

Representing Team Valor and the fiery Pokemon Moltres, Candela is the last (but certainly not least) of the Pokemon GO leaders. Candela's outfit consists of an asymmetrical red and white coat with black tights.

Candela believes in the "natural power" of Pokemon, and she searches for ways for Pokemon to seek their full potential.

How do the teams compete?

These three factions clash against one another by claiming Pokemon GO gyms. A claimed territory allows team members to train and raise their prestige, making it harder for opposing teams to overthrow areas.

So who's your favorite team leader? Which team are you on? Please leave a comment below!

But will Team Instinct eventually get tired of the sidelines and rise up quickly and quietly to world domination? Time will tell.

But in reality Instinct just likes to watch Mystic and Valor fight each other and act like they're so tough.

In revenge, Team Instinct likes to assert themselves as the least immature of Pokemon teams, more likely to attract older, highly-educated members.

Team Instinct seems to be the least popular team, at least according to this Kotaku survey. Finding Dory illustrates this in a beautiful way. Poor Gerald.

Or you could divide the teams by Pokemon character. Also very accurate. Ash would definitely drive his car into Old Navy, and Brock would totally work at Walgreens.

The stereotypes condensed into lovely and very accurate run-on sentences.

Are you Team Instinct, Mystic, or Valor? A simple question, but one that can have unintended consequences on friendships, relationships, and even job prospects for Pokemon Go players.

\n

I kid (mostly), but no one versed in internet memes can deny that Pokemon teams are serious business. When they aren't out staking their claim to gyms, Pokemon Go trainers can often be found promoting their chosen team on the internet and railing against their opponents.

\n

Already stereotypes have been constructed for each team -- Mystic is a bunch of nerds, Valor cares too much, and Instinct is a group of Hufflepuffs --and the memery generated by the rivalry has been glorious to behold. Whether you're an intellectual Mystic, happy-go-lucky Instinct, or adrenaline-fueled Valor, we can all agree on one thing: Pokemon Go trash-talk is a hilarious thing. Keep on with the entertaining content, internet!

P.S. Go Team Mystic.
