Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2

\n

This cowboy epic is some of the best storytelling to come out of games in recent memory. Red Dead Redemption 2 is hailed as one of the best games of the last generation, and through the Series X hardware, boasts some technical improvements including faster loading times.

\n

In Red Dead Redemption 2, you follow the story of Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang. As the age of cowboys and the Wild West decline, Arthur must come to terms with where he's at in the world. The game explores themes such as mortality, friendship, and loyalty. It's a must play title for any gamer.

\n

The first Red Dead Redemption on Xbox 360 is also playable on Series X|S through backwards compatibility as well! It's also important to note that Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel to the first game, despite having the number 2 in the title.

\n

Are there any other RPGs you think should be included in this list? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!

Dead Space 1, 2, and 3

\n

One of the most iconic horror franchises of all time, all three Dead Space games can be played on Xbox Series X|S through backwards compatibility. Not many other games match Dead Space's incredibly creepy atmosphere, frightening enemies, and fascinating lore.

\n

As Isaac, you explore the futuristic 23rd century when Earth's natural resources have mostly dried up. When scientists discover an alien artifact called the Marker, they think that it could sustain Earth with unlimited energy. But little do they know, something more sinister is afoot.

\n

The Dead Space series is absolutely fantastic, and it's a shame that there aren't any signs of a new entry coming at all. However, the three games are available to play and are regularly on sale for cheap.

BioShock: The Collection

\n

Three fantastic games in one package, BioShock: The Collection offers some great first-person shooter combat with fantastic narratives to boot. BioShock 1 and 2 take place in the underwater city of Rapture, while BioShock Infinite's setting in the floating city of Columbia.

\n

You can enjoy the BioShock series either through the remastered collection mentioned above, or if you have the original copies on Xbox 360, they are also playable on Xbox Series X|S through backwards compatibility.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

\n

This is one of the best open world games of all time, and it's basically on every modern platform available. As the Dragonborn, you are on your quest to destroy Alduin The World Eater. You can customize your own character and explore Skyrim. Enhance your skills, engage in combat, and take on quests throughout the world. Truly, the world is at your fingertips here.

\n

In the off chance you haven't played Skyrim yet, it is available on Xbox Game Pass. Or maybe you want to go back to playing this game again. It's really that good.

Code Vein

\n

This game is aptly described as "anime Dark Souls" and it's easy to see why. Code Vein's gameplay is inspired by it, and it's gritty atmosphere certainly reminds someone of the Dark Souls series.

\n

However, it definitely has some things that make it stand out. Firstly, it has it's own anime aesthetic, complete with a more vampiric inspiration rather than a gothic look. Secondly, it's storytelling is much more in line with a typical JRPG, with exposition everywhere. Whereas in Dark Souls, the storytelling is much more environmental.

\n

Either way, if you like anime and Dark Souls, give this a shot. Given that both categories have fans with specific tastes, Code Vein may not resonate with everyone, but with it recently being added to Game Pass, there's no harm in checking it out.

Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3

\n

This is one of the best trilogies of all time. Spanning three games, Mass Effect provides an epic space-faring adventure to take down the Reapers, an ancient alien race that's bent on destroying all life in the universe.

\n

As Commander Shepard, you'll recruit many different characters throughout the three games, and you'll come to love each and every one of them. Even starting from the first game, the choices you make have ramifications on playthroughs of Mass Effect 2 and 3.

\n

The game has been approved through each subsequent title, and the cast of characters remain solid throughout. Luckily, all three titles are playable via backwards compatibility on modern Xbox consoles. Additionally, a remaster of the trilogy, called Mass Effect Legendary Edition, is scheduled to release in 2021.

\n

If you don't want to wait, the trilogy was also made available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers recently through Microsoft's partnership with EA Play.

Blue Dragon

\n

This is another one of Xbox 360's JRPG exclusives. Blue Dragon's art style is very reminiscent of Dragon Quest's, and offers similar turn-based gameplay.

\n

Blue Dragon follows Shu and his friends, Jiro, Kluke, Zola, and Marumaro. With the evil ruler Nene watching over the Gran Kingdom, it's up to Shu and his comrades to find a way to take him down.

\n

Like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon is another great Japanese title that deserves another chance. Fans and newcomers can still enjoy the game on modern Xbox consoles through its fantastic backwards compatibility function.

Halo 5: Guardians and Halo: The Master Chief Collection

\n

Can Xbox's most iconic franchise be considered an RPG? Well, you certainly play the role of Master Chief, as he goes around shooting aliens. Spanning multiple entries, Halo is the definitive franchise that people think of when they think of Xbox, so it'd be remiss not to include it on this list.

\n

Halo is a pioneer of first person-shooter gunplay on consoles, and it's memorable stories, characters, and multiplayer make it one of the most recognizable franchises in gaming history.

\n

While Halo 5's story got a mixed reception, its multiplayer is still incredibly fun. If you're itching for the classic Halo games, they're available through Halo: The Master Chief Collection. The first four games, in addition to Reach and ODST, are included in this single package. Overall, there are seven incredible Halo titles available on Xbox Game Pass while we wait for the release of Halo Infinite in 2021.

Lost Odyssey

\n

Speaking of JRPGs, the Xbox 360 had several exclusive ones, including the excellent Lost Odyssey. This turn-based game follows Kaim as he navigates the world going through a magical industrial revolution. There are several nations at war with each other, and Kaim's journey will have him crossing paths with many different characters that join him.

\n

Lost Odyssey has been loved by many fans. While it looks like we won't be seeing a sequel to this game any time soon, it is playable on modern Xbox consoles through backwards compatibility.

Control

\n

Remedy's latest game is a mindbending, gravity-defying adventure. Take control of Jesse Faden as she explores the Oldest House in search of her brother and uncover its dark secrets within. Filled with paranormal creatures called the Hiss, Jesse must face them while using her abnormal powers such as telekinesis and levitation.

\n

Control is certainly an interesting premise, and it's third-person combat is definitely fun as you go around picking up objects to throw at enemies. The lore is fascinating as well as you learn more about the Oldest House.

\n

The regular version of Control is available on Xbox Game Pass. There are also two DLC story expansions: The Foundation and AWE. If you end up enjoying Control, definitely consider purchasing the extra content!

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

\n

One of the studios that Microsoft purchased back in 2018 was Ninja Theory, the team behind Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. The narrative revolves around Senua, and delves into themes like psychological horror and is a metaphor of psychosis. While the combat isn't anything to write home about, the dread filled atmosphere really sells the game.

\n

And yes, you're seeing a PlayStation trailer on an Xbox article! This is most likely the first, last, and only time players will see Senua on a PlayStation platform.

\n

Microsoft announced a sequel, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II, back in 2019 for Xbox Series X|S. You can play Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice on Xbox Game Pass while waiting for the future sequel!

Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition

\n

Let's be honest, Xbox hasn't really been known for Japanese games. However, that doesn't mean that there aren't any on the platform. Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition is one of the very few titles in the Tales series that is available on Xbox. You play as Yuri Lowell, who ventures out in the world of Terca Lumireis as he explores the world, gains new companions, and eventually saves the planet.

\n

Tales of Vesperia was actually an Xbox 360 exclusive in the west back in 2008. An updated version of the game was released, but never made its way outside of Japan until it was ported to modern consoles in 2019.

\n

This is a classic JRPG through and through. With its exciting real-time combat and fun cast of characters, Vesperia is a grand adventure. It's also available on Xbox Game Pass!

Gears 5

\n

The latest entry in the fantastic Gears series, Gears 5 made some fresh changes to the formula by adding open world sections, as well as providing us with a new perspective and story focusing on Kat Diaz. The game is a complete package: smooth third person shooting gameplay, a fantastic narrative-driven campaign, and robust multiplayer modes.

\n

Now, Gears 5 has received some additional single-player story content in the form of Hivebusters. The new Xbox hardware also boosts the game's framerates and visuals, and Hivebusters is a great way to get back into the title. As with all of Microsoft's first party titles, Gears 5 is available on Game Pass.

Fallout 3 & 4

\n

Speaking of Bethesda, another one of its iconic franchises is Fallout. In Fallout 4, explore Boston, Massachusetts in a post-apocalyptic setting called "The Commonwealth", set 10 years after the events of Fallout 3.

\n

You play as the "Sole Survivor" who has been frozen and asleep in Vault 111. You search for missing son after seeing your spouse killed, and The Commonwealth has many places for you to explore and quests to take on. You can manage settlements and craft items to help you along your journey.

\n

Fallout 4 was available on Game Pass in the past, but has since left the subscription service. Hopefully, along with 2016's DOOM, Fallout 4 could also be added back sometime in the future. Fallout 3 is backwards compatible with modern Xbox consoles, so that's a great title to play as well.

DOOM Eternal/DOOM (2016)

\n

Microsoft dropped the incredible news earlier this year that it would be acquiring Zenimax Media, which also includes developer Bethesda. The studio's biggest release this year, Doom Eternal, also launched on Xbox Game Pass only several months later.

\n

Undoubtedly one of the most ambitious games of 2020, the sequel to 2016's DOOM is one hell of a time. Play as the Doomslayer as he rips through demonic hordes of enemies.

\n

While the 2016 game left the Xbox Game Pass service a while ago, hopefully the new acquisition means that it could come back sometime in the future. If you've already played it, now is a great time to try it out on Microsoft's game subscription service.

Over the past few years, Microsoft has made Xbox the best place to play in terms of backwards compatibility. During the middle of last generation, Xbox put more effort into that initiative, allowing us to play new games while also being able to enjoy old favorites without always having to bring out an older console. Thus, many classic Xbox 360 and even original Xbox titles are playable on the new Xbox Series X|S.

\n

Many of these games include RPGs, and with Microsoft's other programs such as Xbox Game Pass, you can enjoy many of them for a low monthly price. This is by no means a complete list, but these are 15 great RPGs you can play on Xbox.

Mass Effect 2

\n

It's no secret that the original Mass Effect was one of the best role-playing games of its day. However, it hasn't really aged well. Mass Effect 2, however, has aged like fine wine.

\n

The gunplay is improved over the original, the story is much more action packed, the characters are incredibly developed and complex, and it still has some of the best art design in all of gaming.

\n

Mass Effect 2 is the reason why I play video games -- and I'm not the only one who feels that way. Mass Effect may be dead, but legends like Mass Effect 2 will always live on.

Gears of War 3

\n

The original Gears of War reinvented third-person shooters back in 2006, but the last game in the original trilogy was the one that perfected it.

Red Dead: Redemption

\n

After GTA IV, Rockstar took somewhat of a left turn, releasing a game that surprised everyone: Red Dead: Redemption.

\n

Implementing the gameplay that made GTA so great, and using a setting such as the Old West, was one of the best idea's the developer has ever had. Along with an improved combat system over GTA IV and a compelling story of betrayal (and an ending that may make you cry), Redemption still remains a fan favorite and we can't wait to get our hands on the upcoming sequel.

Dead Space 2

\n

The original Dead Space was an excellent mixture of Resident Evil 4 and Event Horizon. Combining the backtracking, tension, and gunplay of the former with the ideal location of a spaceship in the middle of nowhere, Dead Space created something special.

\n

The sequel expands upon this by allowing players to explore the blood-drenched floors of the space station, Sprawl. Dead Space 2's narrative may be a bit less interesting than the original, but truly great gameplay, excellent tension, and outstanding production make this a horror classic.

Mixing eerie storytelling and a creepy atmosphere (with the unique use of light as a combat mechanic and excellent gunplay), Alan Wake is one of the 360's more under-appreciated games.

It may feel old when compared to later installments and it can get extremely repetitive, but its core exploration-based gameplay and level design is still strong.

\n

It also has a world that no game has ever been set in and an engaging story that still holds up after all these years. With the series exploring prequels in its latest installments, it's worth going back and seeing where it all began.

Batman: Arkham Origins

\n

Batman: Arkham Origins gets a bad rap for not doing anything different with the formula that it's predecessors laid out -- and that's true. Despite that, it tells a great Batman/Joker story, has engaging combat, and has some of the best boss fights in any video game.

\n

Arkham Origins may only be available on disk, but it shouldn't be missed for Bat-fans craving more time in the Arkham-verse.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

\n

After years of hibernation, Deus Ex finally returned with Human Revolution. By allowing players to choose a specific gameplay style (either guns blazing or sneaking about), this excellent RPG managed to capture the original's spirit while not being afraid to try different things.

\n

Human Revolution also managed to tell an intriguing story of government conspiracy and revenge. The sequel may be better in nearly every way, but this adventure is still an unforgettable tale that's worth experiencing.

GTA IV

\n

Grand Theft Auto's debut on last-gen machines may not be its best installment (the driving is still a pain in the ass), but the changes it made to story and gameplay, as well as the inclusion of multiplayer that's even more addictive than GTA Online, makes this one of the series' best installments.

\n

Nikko's story of revenge still holds a place in many people's hearts, as it is easily the most grounded and relatable story in a GTA game. Top that with the same open world gameplay that's made GTA a household name and you've got yourself a winner.

Beyond Good and Evil HD

\n

Technically an HD version of an Xbox game, Beyond Good and Evil HD still counts as it's the only way to play this classic game on consoles.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist

\n

After the action focused Conviction, Ubisoft listened to fans and was able to tailor Blacklist to what many players wanted: the ability to choose their own style of play.

By combining the gameplay mechanics and urgency of the previous game and the slower and more methodical style of Chaos Theory, Blacklist was able to cater to both newcomers and long-time veterans of the series.

Hitman Absolution

\n

Hitman Absolution took some risks with the typical gameplay of the long running series. While some changes, like more linear sections, didn't work so well, its change to a more Grindhouse style of storytelling and inclusion of the instinct meter were welcomed.

\n

Absolution also contains some of the series' best kills, such as switching BBQ sauce with Gasoline. It's easily Hitman at it's most cinematic and most accessible -- more so than any title in the series.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2

\n

There's little doubt that Call of Duty is a defining franchise. But Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 did a lot of different things with the franchise -- and they payed off.

\n

From the ability to make choices that changed the game's story to a futuristic setting and a villain that's actually intimidating, Black Ops 2 made for the best CoD game since the original Modern Warfare.

\n

Not all additions, like Strike Force missions, are winners, but it's still a game that's worth playing.

\n

However, the 80's love doesn't stop there. Blood Dragon is so drenched in 80's nostalgia that it's the Ready Player One of video games. It may be short, but Blood Dragon still has the classic Far Cry gameplay, just colored in a retro vibe. And that ain't half-bad.

If there's one thing the Xbox One has over the PS4 and Nintendo Switch, it's backwards compatibility. Sure, the PS4 has its streaming service (PlayStation Now) for playing PS3 games, but the relatively high price and often fuzzy visual quality isn't as consumer friendly as people may want it to be. And, of course, the Switch doesn't have Virtual Console, so ...

\n

Playing old games on your current system without having to pay some kind of Netflix-like membership is a much better alternative -- and it does a better job of helping the medium retain its physical history, too.

\n

With more than 300 titles currently getting the backwards compatibility treatment on the Xbox, picking only 10 games wasn't good enough. For this list, we're looking at 20 of the best Xbox 360 games you can play on your Xbox One right now.

\n

There are only two caveats. One, the games in question can't be available in the form of a remaster -- so don't expect the Halo series, the original Gears of War, Burnout Paradise, etc) as they can be played on Xbox One with numerous improvements. And two, we're only looking at one game per franchise.

\n

With that said, let's get started.

Army of Two series

Army Of Two is one of EA's best game series. The games revolves around two men fighting through war, political turmoil, cartels, and a whole lot more. From the chaotic cinematic sequences to slow-mo action with blazing firepower, the game brings the player close to the action, as it feels like you are in a movie. If you decide not to pay attention to the gameplay, the stories from the games really are interesting. Honestly, why didn't they include the Army of Two series in the first place?

Skate & Skate 2
\n

You can't just include one Skate game. Even though Skate 3 is on EA Access, why didn't EA include Skate and Skate 2? The opposite of Tony Hawk games, they focus on the teenage, urban, indie skateboarding style. Basically, in the original Skate, it's pretty simple: you start at the bottom as an indie, and you work your way up to becoming the best by competing in contests and completing missions. In Skate 2, you get out of prison five years after the events in Skate to find that the city suffered from an earthquake, but the gameplay and challenges are still the same. If you're gonna include one game from the whole series, why not include all of them?

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames
\n

A sequel to Playground of Destruction, Mercenaries 2: World in Flames takes place in Venezuela, where the player is on a quest of revenge. The player embarks on a journey where he picks up contracts and earns money for weapons and accessories to take down a Solano. Along the way, the player can join or befriend the groups that he encounters. Even though you can lose the respect of certain groups, it's all about the contracts, completing the missions, and the payouts. While this sequel doesn't have the strong critical acclaim of the original, like the first game, it's still fun to play if you just want to blow up tanks, gunships, and oil rigs.

Brutal Legend

EA definitely has to include one of the best games that was ever made. Brutal Legend was a gem and one of the EA games that deserves a sequel. An ancient classic has risen from the dust and ashes. Lost Odyssey, developed by Feelplus and Mistwalker, and published by Microsoft, is now available on backwards compatibility on Xbox One.

It was published by Microsoft Game Studios in 2007 in Japan and 2008 in western countries later. Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg, head of Xbox marketing, announced the backwards compatible version on Twitter earlier this week:

There's a catch though -- you'll have to have a physical copy of the game in order to play it, as there's no digital option on the store.

Lost Odyssey is a Japanese turn-based RPG, praised in its time for a strong focus on story. Unfortunately the load times and formulaic gameplay held it back for many as well.

The game wasn't a massive commercial success in western countries, so finding the game (instead of already owning it) will be a more difficult challenge.

With everyone excited about the November 12th launch of Microsoft's New Xbox One Experience, we take a look at how backwards compatibility affects DLC.

According to GameInformer, you will need to purchase downloadable content on Xbox.com or on your Xbox 360 console to fully access it.

They have confirmed that all DLC will be supported and automatically downloaded onto your Xbox with the supported games. It will also support both digital and disc-based games for Xbox 360.  For users that already own the DLC, they should have no hiccups once the service goes live. Add-ons work the same way, meaning you have to use the Xbox website or load them onto your Xbox 360.

For devoted Xbox fans and casual gamers alike, this is big news given all the time invested in building their collection of games. Seeing that DLC will not be lost during this backward compatibility program makes the November 12th launch that much more exciting.

Are you excited about Microsoft's New Xbox One Experience? Leave a comment below and let us hear about it.

Burnout Paradise developer Criterion Games recently confirmed that the Xbox 360 version of the title will be playable on the Xbox One. The Xbox One's upcoming backward compatibility service will cover the racing title, but nobody has said exactly when it will be available.

The Xbox One's backwards compatibility will launch sometime after the console's new Windows 10 desktop arrives in November, and it will make more than 100 games playable on the console. Because Burnout Paradise will be running on an emulated Xbox 360 system it will be able to support DLC, cloud saves, and multiplayer.

Users in the Xbox One preview program are already able to try many other titles that will be playable through the emulated system.

Burnout Paradise was first released back in 2008 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and on PC the next year. The game takes place in the open-world Paradise City, where players can compete in various types of races. Additional racing modes were available via online multiplayer, and DLC included a new area, Big Surf Island. It got good reviews from critics, but Burnout Paradise was the last major Burnout game that was released.

So, are you excited that Burnout Paradise will soon be playable on Xbox One? Would you like to see a new title in the series? Let us know in the comments!

Come time in November of 2015, Microsoft plans to implement backwards compatibility with specific games through their new feature added to the Xbox One console.

The way Microsoft has been choosing these backwards compatibility mode editions is through a poll where the communiy can vote on their choices; and Deus Ex: Human Revolution could be a prime candidate. Microsoft has made it clear that there is no promise for games voted through if they can't make the magic happen, but they are at least paying attention to their customers and their wants.Working towards a large goal

A very promising tweet from Deus Ex's official account is leading to the assumption that Square Enix is working towards making Deus Ex: Human Revolution playable on the Xbox One through the backwards compatibility feature.

Though Square Enix has their work cut out for them between approval from Microsoft, making it on the backwards compatibility list, and of course converting it to play on the Xbox One; they have a large fanbase behind their games that will help make it a reality. After all, Microsoft does need to cater to the fans when it comes to the backwards compatibility.Would you play Deus Ex: Human Revolution if it came to the Xbox One? Could it be a promising edition to Xbox One's upcoming backwards compatibility feature? Give us your thoughts below!

With Xbox One making itself backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games, we can all shout for joy! Not only are they allowing these great classics back, but they are also claiming that all that extra power the Xbox One has, will go to good use for the 360 games as well! However, they are only releasing 100 of them to start. So here is my list of the top 10 Xbox 360 games that I want to play on my Xbox One:

10. Assassin's Creed: Ezio Trilogy

It’s a trilogy pack that I hope becomes available altogether when Microsoft releases those first 100 games. Ezio is by far my favorite character from the Assassin’s Creed series, and he deserves an Xbox One playthrough.

9. Fallout 3

Fallout 4 is on the horizon, and for many (myself included) of us gamers out there, it was Fallout 3 that made us fall in love with the series. If this is one of the 100 made available first, it will be one of the first that I will play.

8. Borderlands

With the Handsome Jack Collection available on Xbox One, this would be a great complimentary for the rest of the series. I love the idea of being able to play all the games on the newer console.

7. Sonic Generations

When it comes to games that could benefit greatly from the frame rate, Sonic Generations will be the most beneficial. After all, a smoother Sonic, is a better Sonic!

6. May Payne 3

There’s more than enough reasons for why this game will be fun to play on the new system, so here’s three: Insane action battles, bullet time, and New York Minute mode.

5. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

The reason why I chose this one over Skyrim was because this game played clunkier. The movements were just not as sharp when compared to Skyrim, so I feel that playing it on Xbox One will give it a new and better feel.

4. Far Cry 3

Other than some of the more memorable bosses ever, Far Cry 3’s mechanics could use the slight boost. When you can drive, swim, dive, fly, shoot, run, climb, and do almost any kind of body movement out there, you will want the slight improvement to it, especially on the action commands.

3. Call of Duty: World at War

With one of the best campaigns the series has to offer, COD: World at War is an easy choice. The updated movement will benefit the classic mode of Nazi Zombies, not to mention online play. This game would be an instant plus to play right off the bat.

2. Bioshock Infinite

The BioShock series has ended (if it has in fact ended) on an amazing note. BioShock Infinite is just one of those games that made an impact on your gaming life. I hope they make another one, but if not, this game will be one of the best to play on Xbox One.

1. Mass Effect Trilogy

Why is this game number one on my list? It’s because once Mass Effect 4 hits the stores, you know you’re going to want to play the other three all over again. You can cry, laugh, and just enjoy playing through the series, before or after you play the fourth installment.

These are my top ten games, but may not necessarily be yours. If you different opinion, please feel free to share a game that you feel should have been on the list.
