Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Confirmed, Trailer is Stunning

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is no longer a mystery, and just may be the best-looking video game yet.

Speculation on The Phantom Pain has ended: The mystery title is in fact Metal Gear Solid 5. The title was confirmed during today’s Game Developers Conference, during which Hideo Kojima showed just how Kojima Products was reaching such levels of realism with the Fox Engine. Check out the trailer above — it really is amazing.

So I guess the question now is: Was Joakim Mogren CGI? Moby Dick studios never existed, and so much of what was shown during GDC does point to Kojima Productions being capable of crafting such realism through the Fox Engine. [Edit: The answer is no. He is a real person. How disappointing.]

Much of the technology shown during the conference had to be seen to be believed. Look for more clips of the models and lighting shown later today or tomorrow. In the meantime, the official Metal Gear Solid Facebook has posted some screenshots from the trailer for you to check out. Notice how larger round surfaces aren’t perfectly cylindrical, but they are pretty close!

If you’re itching for more, there is also footage of the six minutes of gameplay shown at GDC featuring the “tutorial” portion of the game. Check that out here.
