Scammers are Everywhere

A major reason that Valve has changed their scam policy is under the view that their users should be able to identify when a scam is occurring, and avoid it. Valve has provided adequate information on their website regarding how to identify scams, and that the knowledge should benefit the users.

“We sympathise with people who fall victim to scams, but we provide enough information on our website and within our trading system to help users make good trading decisions.”

“All trade scams can be avoided.” – Official Valve Statement

Ruining the Item Value

The second reason that Valve stated on this removal is that by providing an inventory rollback, they have added more copies of the game into the community. By doing so it has reduced the value of the games exponentially, due to the scarcity of the item being diminished.

“If more copies of the item are added to the economy through inventory rollbacks, the value of every other instance of that item would be reduced.” – Official Valve Statement

At this time it is worrisome as some Steam users are young children and may not know when a scam is occurring. If you have a younger sibling or child using Steam, make sure to express that scams exist and how to determine when one is happening.
