Unu: New Console Unveiled at E3

Sunflex USA wants to bridge the gap between tablet and gaming console with the Unu.

Sometimes during E3, it’s easy to forget some of the little guys in the video game arena and only focus on the big wigs like Sony or Nintendo.  I want to take a moment to spotlight one of the newcomers to the console scene.

Sunflex USA, the company that usually only makes accessories for other consoles, is diving into the casual gaming space with a unique system called the Unu.  The new console is designed to be a “unuversial” experience, bridging the gap between a tablet and a gaming system.

The Unu

The Unu by itself is a portable tablet that is based on Google’s Android operating system.  This means that the user will automatically have access to the Android’s extensive list of apps from the Google Play Store.  The system also comes with a docking station that allows it to be connected to a television which transforms it into a TV receiver to allow the user to stream movies from TV apps such as Netflix.

The Unu’s “air mouse.”

But what about the gaming you ask?  Well, the Unu comes with an innovative new tech dubbed the “air mouse” which is essentially a remote that works with the precision of a PC mouse. It also comes with a gamepad that uses the standard style of the Xbox 360 controller that will allow those already familiar with the Xbox 360 to feel right at home.  With these two peripherals, and while the Unu is docked with the TV, a gamer can play any of their Android games on the big screen.

A familiar design for a gamepad.

While the Unu probably won’t win any awards in the hardcore gaming space, it is a worthy entry into the casual gaming market and will allow apps to play on that new 50 inch LED you just bought for your PS4 or Xbox One.

Sunflex’s Unu will be available Summer 2013.
