Valve Gives Half-Life 2 Occulus Rift Compatibility
The Occulus Rift is an amazing device. It's like they took the Virtual Boy, updated it, and made it not awful. Not only is the device itself great, but it's getting a lot of support from good developers like Valve. Not only did they make Team Fortress 2 compatible with the device, but now they have ported Half-Life 2 over to it.
Joe Ludwig, the Valve developer who made the announcement, said that players can opt-in through the SteamPipe Beta. Before doing this, however, players must go into the properties of their copy of Half-Life 2 and set the command line to -vr.
Ludwig warns players that the game is still in beta. There will be some graphical errors, especially with the UI and HUD. Some items will be hard to read on the Occulus Rift. He encourages players to submit their problems to the developers.
I have yet to order an Occulus Rift, but with Valve backing them, it is only a matter of time until I do. Half-Life 2 is one of my favorite games. I'm getting super excited just thinking about having a chance to walk around City 17. I just got some fanboy goosebumps.
