Feel Free to Keep Flying in Firefly Online

The cult classic may not be making a comeback just yet, but this might help distract you in the meantime.

In 2002, Joss Whedon’s space western television series Firefly premiered and, eleven episodes later, was canceled far too soon due to low ratings. A decade later, the show has become a cult classic, with millions of dedicated fans, dubbed Browncoats, waiting for the show’s revival every day.

The series isn’t coming back (yet), but there is good news: Firefly Online, a social role-playing game based on the franchise, is currently in development for iOS and Android-based smartphones and tablets.

Its tagline, “Find a Crew. Find a Job. Keep Flying,” says it all: in the game, players will become captains of their own ships, tasked with recruiting ship crew and leading missions. Some of the other features listed so far include customizable ships, cross-platform play, and trading between players.

“At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise Firefly is and how mighty the Browncoats are,” said Andy Gore of developer QMXi. “It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible. The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures––well, that’s just too shiny for words.”

The developer, alongside Spark Plug Games, is a great fit for Firefly Online, having worked extensively with the series for a long period of time. VP of Fox Digital Entertainment’s mobile division Matt McMahon said:

“We are thrilled to be partnering with QMx on Firefly Online. QMx has a long and successful history with Firefly and we couldn’t think of a better partner to make a truly innovative game that will stand up in the Verse and to its passionate fans.”

The bad news? You’ll have to wait until 2014 for the game to drop.

Be sure to preregister on the game’s official website for more information!
