Back 4 Blood: How to Change Characters

Wondering how to change characters in Back 4 Blood? Here's what you need to know about switching Cleaners.

If you’re wondering how to change characters in Back 4 Blood, you’ve come to the right place. Swapping out Cleaners is an important part of learning how their perks, traits, and abilities best fit with your playstyle. One character does not fit all roles, and you need to try each of them out to find your main.

Luckily, you can easily change characters without too much hassle. This works whether you plan on playing single-player or multiplayer. While in Fort Hope, open the System menu. Then click Character Select underneath Social.

  • Systems menu -> Character Select

You’ll then be taken to the character select screen, where you can choose your character and swap out Cleaners. Once you do, you’ll respawn in Fort Hope as the new character you’ve chosen.

It’s important to note that you cannot change or swap characters in any other menu, including the Cleaners submenu brought up by the game hub; that submenu is for changing character outfits and skins.

Further, you cannot change or swap characters once you’ve locked them in while in the lobby after matchmaking or during a play session. You’ll have to completely leave a match in order to do so if you choose.

Initially, you begin with four playable Cleaners: Evangelo, Walker, Holly, and Mom. There are four other locked heroes you won’t be able to access until you complete parts of the campaign. Here’s how to unlock Doc, Hoffman, Jim, and Karlee. Once you do, you’ll be able to choose them as well, for a total of eight playable characters.
