Sonic the Hedgehog Bursts Out with a Fantastic First Weekend

Sonic the Hedgehog debuted with what is projected as the best video game movie opening weekend in history.

It seems the Blue Blur's still got it, as Sonic the Hedgehog had a fantastic weekend at the box office, smacking last year's Pokemon: Detective Pikachu as the best opening weekend for a video game-based movie in the United States.

Sonic the Hedgehog starring Jim Carrey as Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic raked in an estimated $57 million over its opening weekend, zooming right past Pokemon: Detective Pikachu's $54.3 million first weekend.

This sounds like great news, but don't get too excited just yet. The actual numbers have yet to be released, and it is possible Sonic doesn't hold the crown. However, it brings a little tear to my eye knowing Sonic's first foray in movie theaters is doing well, considering how long it's been since the character's peak in popularity.

I reviewed Sonic the Hedgehog on release day and gave it a fair 7/10. Jim Carrey's performance as Robotnik and Sonic's frenetic antics are hard to pull your eyes away from over the movie's 100-minute runtime.
