Speaking to Will Wheaton on PlayStation’s Conversation’s with Creators, Neil Druckmann, Bruce Straley, Anthony Newman and Evan Wells discussed everything about Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us. Newman, co-lead designer on the game, said the power of the PS4 has allowed them to do lots of new things in the series, one of which is the use of real-time cutscenes.

“You’re not going to see those black bars that we used to have in between gameplay and cutscenes.” Said Newman. “That’s going to let us be so much more expressive and really get that seamlessness between the storytelling and the gameplay. Which we already do very well, but it’s going to allow us to take it to that next level.”

And the higher fidelity doesn’t just mean the cutscenes could look better, it means the Drake you see in the cutscenes is the same one you get to play with. “That super great-looking Nathan Drake that’s in the cutscenes–that’s going to be the guy you have the whole time.” Confirmed Newman. “The lighting model is nearly identical. All of that emotion you get across in the cutscenes, you’ll have in gameplay all the time.”
