Turtle Rock Studios, perhaps most known for the acclaimed Left 4 Dead series, is back for more zombie shooting action, or rather, they’re back for blood — literally. After giving us a brief tease in 2019, the studio finally unveiled the first footage of Back 4 Blood, Left 4 Dead‘s spiritual successor, during The Game Awards 2020.

Back 4 Blood has a planned June 21, 2021 release date on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Turtle Rock also announced a Back 4 Blood closed alpha test for December 17.

Back 4 Blood features the same zombie-slaying co op DNA as its spiritual forebears, as a band of humans called The Cleaners fight to rid the world of the Devil Worm. Worm zombies of all shapes and sizes crowd post-apocalyptic streets, hungering for blood and spewing all manner of nasty fluids to entrap their human prey.

It’s a staple setup fans expect, which is exactly what Turtle Rock wants out of Back 4 Blood.

Chris Ashton, Turtle Rock’s Design Director, said:

Our fans have been waiting a long time for us to return to our roots and it’s amazing to finally show the world what we’ve been working on.

We are making this game with our community in mind and are firing on all cylinders to give players a compelling zombie experience that is unlike any other.

The team also showed off world-premier Back 4 Blood gameplay during the awards show.

Registration for the closed Back 4 Blood alpha test, which is from December 17 to December 21, is open on the official website.

Turtle Rock is also hosting an in-depth Back 4 Blood gameplay demonstration on December 17 at 1 p.m. EST/10 a.m. PST, viewable on their Twitch and YouTube channels. Stay tuned for more.
