At GDC 2015, Nvidia announced an addition to their line of Shield products, The Nvidia Shield Console.
Not to be confused with the Shield Tablet or the Shield Portable, the Shield Console will act as Nvidia’s addition to the living room. The device will act as both a gaming device as well as an Android TV device.
The Shield Console is an Android based device capable of 4k playback and capture. It can run both local games and games streamed from the Nvidia Grid service. The games streamed from the service can go up to 1080p at 60fps.
If you’re worried about whether the console will have games, don’t be. The Shield Console will have access to the Google Play store and Nvidia’s own store/service. Several notable ports for the console were mentioned during the reveal including, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, The Witcher 3, Batman: Arkham Origins, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and Ultra Street Fighter 4, to name a few.
The console itself has a Tegra X1 processor, which has 256-bit Maxwell GPU with 3GB of RAM. The Shield console will have a MicroSD slot, a Micro USB 2.0 port, two USB Type-A 3.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet port, and a HDMI port. The device is wireless and Bluetooth capable and it has an IR receiver.
The Shield Console will be sold along with an Xbox-styled controller as a bundle for $199.
