Gotta Catch All the Litter! Niantic Joins Mission Blue to Host Worldwide Earth Day Cleanups

Pokemon GO research rewards are great and all, but there's nothing more rewarding than doing some good for Mother Earth. Join Niantic, The Pokemon Company, and an assortment of nonprofit organizations this Earth Day to participate in a massive cleanup effort.

Are you a Pokemon GO Trainer looking to do some good for our planet? If so, you'll be happy to learn that Niantic and The Pokemon Company are joining forces with Playmob, local nonprofits, and NGOs like Mission Blue (dedicated to preserving our oceans and waterways) to host cleanup events this Earth Day. And they need your help!

Stop to consider for a moment that it doesn't really matter how much AR technology improves if the real world onto which those beloved Pokemon are projected is strewn with trash and detritus (which itself sounds kind of like a Pokemon). After all, the thrill of discovering a shiny Murkrow is somewhat tarnished when it pops up in a glob of real-life garbage.

But if that's still not enough to convince you, Niantic is offering some additional incentives. According to the company:

All trainers will receive access to a special avatar item to celebrate Earth Day and those who work together to participate in the cleanups around the world will unlock unique in-game rewards for the entire world. If 1,500 trainers attend the events around the world, 2x catch stardust for ground, water, and grass-type pokémon will be unlocked for 48 hours. If more than 3,000 trainers participate in the clean up events, 3x catch stardust for ground, water, and grass-type pokémon for 48 hours will be unlocked for trainers around the world.

So on April 22, why not do your part to keep this one planet of ours sustainable for future generations? Check out the official Pokemon GO Earth Day Cleanup site to find a cleanup event near you, or you can even help with a financial donation of any amount by visiting Mission Blue's website here.
