Get to Work: The Sims 4’s First Expansion

The Sims 4 is getting its first expansion pack, and it lets you go to work.

Today marks fifteen years since The Sims was first released. EA and Maxis have been announcing new things coming to The Sims 4 lately, such as genealogy and that it’s finally coming to Mac. Today they announced its first expansion!

Get To Work

That’s the title of this expansion. If you’re familiar with the Sims games, then you know this isn’t the first time they’ve done this type of expansion. However, I think that it’s going to be the best one yet. It’s adding in, according to the website, three careers that you can actively participate in, as well as being able to open and customize your own business.

The New Careers

Let’s talk about the three new careers. They are as follows: Doctor, Detective, and Scientist. These have been staples in the Sims games since day one. Being able to go in and actually work on patients, find unique inventions, and solve crimes will be pretty exciting. They tried to do this with the “Ambitions” expansion pack for The Sims 3. I thought that what they added was interesting but a little bit difficult in some areas. I never could quite make my Sims happy enough as an architect or stylist. Hopefully they’ll add more than three but it’s a good place to start.

Building a Business

I have been waiting for this to come back since the “Open for Business” expansion pack was released for The Sims 2. It’s my favorite expansion pack in the history of the Sims. I kept waiting and waiting for them to release a similar expansion to The Sims 3, but it never came. Now they’re finally adding it once again. This time it appears to be more refined and easier to use. It mentions being able to open a bakery, clothing boutique, art gallery, bookstore, and many more. This will allow for so much diversity that I think it’s going to be amazing. “Open for Business” made it difficult to open anything other than a simple selling place for your created items but this seems like you get a stock of items that you then sell as well as being able to make your own stuff to sell in your shop as well. My hope is that you can open a restaurant too, because that was always very difficult in ‘Open for Business” and would be great if you could do that in this new expansion.

New Skills

They’re also adding in new skills. No longer will you be limited to a few measly deserts, but you can focus on baking exclusively. You can also pick up that non-cameraphone-camera and take pictures with the photography skill. Hopefully these will add some more things to do in the world of the Sims.

What do you think?

Do you think that this is going to make The Sims 4 better, worse, not much different? Do you think they should add more careers? Let me know in the comments and look forward to the answers to your burning questions when the expansion is released this April.

I have two goals in life. 1)Publish a novel and 2) write a questline in a core Elder Scrolls game. Until then, I spend my 9-5 performing IT support. The rest of my time is spent: playing games, going on hikes with my Wife and our Corgi, or planning D&D sessions that will never happen.
