Red Dead Redemption PS4 & Switch Ports Saddle Up for August Release

The sequel to RDR2 is making its way to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Red Dead Redemption PS4 and Nintendo Switch ports are arriving on August 17 alongside the game’s stand-alone expansion, Undead Nightmare. The ports are being handled by developer Double Eleven Studios, not Rockstar itself. The studio has worked on a few notable console ports, including Minecraft Dungeons, Rust, and Goat Simulator. Double Eleven is also responsible for the Vita ports of Limbo and LittleBigPlanet.

The game and the expansion pack will come bundled in a single package for $49.99 on both platforms and will be available digitally on the Nintendo eShop and PlayStation Store starting on August 17. Rockstar hasn’t said when pre-orders will go live (if at all), but a post on the Rockstar Newswire said notifications will be sent to those who wishlist the bundle. Physical editions (!) will release on October 13, just in time for spoopy season and a nice touch for those of us still holding on to physical media.

While the latest versions of Red Dead Redemption aren’t the Red Dead remake many have been hoping for, it does bring the 2010 classic back to the PlayStation 4 (it was removed from streaming through PS Plus in 2022) and to the Nintendo Switch playerbase, the latter of which is for the first time. Consequently, the bundle will also be playable on PlayStation 5 via backwards compatibility.

Both Red Dead Redemption and the Undead Nightmare expansion were originally released in 2010 for the PS3 and Xbox One. A sequel to 2018’s fantastic Red Dead Redemption 2, you play as outlaw John Marston going toe to toe with members of his former posse (a continuation of the story told in RDR2). Undead Nightmare adds zombies to the mix, tells a new story from an alternative perspective, and steeps Rockstar’s Wild West world in plenty of B-horror trappings, the like of which would make George A. Romero proud. Stay tuned for more.
