ZergID: A Social Network for MMOs (not Starcraft)

ZergID is a new MMO-focused social network.

Zerg, Inc., a company co-founded by former G4 and Revision3 personality, Alex Albrecht, and Scott Katz, a co-founder of Maker Studios, have spent the past 2 years working on ZergID, a social network for players of MMOs.

The social network is set up fairly simply, allowing players to quickly set up profiles for their characters in various MMOs, allowing friends, old and new, to quickly find each other.

Currently in beta, the website has a very clean and simple interface encompassing four different areas:

Profile: This is where the player can list all of his or her characters on various MMOs, check out updates from friends’ feeds, updates on relevant games played, and updates from all other Zerg users. The interface is very reminiscent of Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Upcoming Events: This is a basic calendering app where players can invite friends to play together on specified dates and times.

Message Center: This is where players can DM each other.

Guilds: Here, players can set up and manage multiple guilds.

At least for now, all of the features are free to use, which is great.

One other interesting feature of this platform is that players can also send push notifications to players who are not online, via an Android or iOS app. This is great considering that you can’t always expect your friends to be online exactly at the same time.

Alex Albrecht is certainly not new to MMOs, as evidenced by his 2008 video podcast, Project Lore, where he and his friends showed off all five dungeons in the World of Warcraft’s first expansion, The Burning Crusade.

ZergID is still a very simple platform, but as more users come on board, hopefully we will see it expand to become something greater for all MMO players. If you are interested in checking it out, you can sign up for a free account on their website.

Just imagine how great it would be to have this as a resource to write something for the #10YearsofWoW contest!
