Nintendo 3DS Reaches 15 Million in US Sales

The Nintendo 3DS has sold 15 million units in the United States now, but what makes this system so successful?

The Nintendo 3DS has officially sold 15 million units in the United States, and 52 million units worldwide. This milestone was previously accomplished by seven other systems, and they are the NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, and Wii.

Some of the other systems that haven’t made this milestone are the Game Boy Color, Gamecube, and most importantly, the Wii U. While the Wii U continues to struggle with getting sales up, the Nintendo 3DS has been Nintendo’s saving grace. If Nintendo wants to get the Wii U back in the game, they’re going to have to have one of the best E3’s ever.

What Makes the 3DS So Successful?

Like any great system, it comes right down to the games. The variety of games the 3DS has is amazing. It has KirbyKid IcarusSmash Bros., The Legend of ZeldaSuper Mario Bros.Fire EmblemAnimal Crossing, etc. The best part about all of this is that we can still expect great games to be announced for the system during this year’s E3, which debuts June 16.

Another reason for the system’s success is the quick change in sale price. At the beginning of its life cycle, the 3DS didn’t sell that well, causing Nintendo to quickly lower the original sale price. That made the system’s sales quickly improve, and then came all the varieties. Nintendo 3DS became the Nintendo 2DS (for those that didn’t want the 3D feature), had a larger size released, and now there is even a newer 3DS with even more capabilities compared to its predecessors.

So while I’m happy to see this system be successful, it only makes me want an even more successful home console. But in the meantime, I’m content to play my 3DS upside down on my couch!
