CISPA Struck Down – Another Win for Internet Privacy and Freedom

Image-sharers across the world breathe a sigh of relief. The Big Bad Brother's not here yet.

No, it’s not a slow news day — As internet users (and dwellers), CISPA was a very real threat to the internet as we know it. CISPA’s privacy-invading provisions were the main worry of those paying attention to the bill, and apparently the Senate had some similar concerns.

Senator Jay Rockefeller said the bill’s privacy protections are “insufficient”, and President Obama himself has even threatened to veto the bill should it have made it that far. Luckily enough, it seems to be dead in the water.

Just like last year with SOPA, we can bet this won’t be the last cyber security bill to saunter its way through Congress and the Senate. The Cyber Security and American Cyber Competitiveness Act of 2013 is next in line, but it offers more privacy protection than either CISPA or SOPA.

A bill has to make it through eventually, but hopefully further attempts to lock down the internet will afford users more privacy. For now, we can celebrate: The internet as we know it is safe.
