Burnout spiritual successor teased

The king of crashing may come back

There are two types of racing games. Simulators, like the Gran Turismo series and Driveclub, and car combat games. The Burnout series reigned supreme in this second category for a while. With games like Burnout: Revenge and Burnout: Paradise, Criterion games had the monopoly on wrecks. It’s been seven years since Burnout: Paradise, and Criterion is finally teasing a sequel…sort of.

A new company named Three Fields Entertainment, founded by Criterion heads Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry, sent out a few tweets saying that there’s a racing coming from Three Fields next year.

“What sort of driving game you ask? A spiritual successor. Speed. Traffic. And crashing. Lots and lots of crashing.”

This tweet clearly references the Burnout series and its affinity for crashing.

The original developers, Criterion, shifted away from the Burnout series in 2009 to develop the Need for Speed series. Around 2013, the studio faced even more downsizing, and the two heads opened a new studio. A new, full Burnout game would definitely be a welcome return to those itching for mindless destruction.
