One Hell of a Crossover: Sonic Smash Brothers

Great concept, just needs a bit of tweaking.

You’re combining two of my favorite childhood video games?

Nostalgia!

Sonic Smash Brothers, available on SonicGames.com, combines the gameplay of Super Smash Brothers with some familiar faces and locations. You begin with the three quintessential characters from the Sonic Universe: Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. As you complete more adventures you unlock characters like Shadow and Silver and explore the world of Sonic the Hedgehog.

One of main features of this game is the adventure mode, which is an interesting union between Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Smash Brothers. Adventure mode levels alternate between tasks like iconic coin collecting and whoopin’ some fluffy tail!

So much potential, but held back by some poor design choices.

Besides the feeling of nostalgia everywhere, this game is actually pretty hard to wrangle with. The game is still in Beta, which makes it a little acceptable, but there isn’t much right with this game. The maps are extremely hard to read. I found myself distracted by the flaws and spending most of my time trying to reach places on the map which are only available for the very lucky. I had a tough time actually completing the tasks.

Although the controls are very basic, they were unintuitive and hard to follow. To make matters worse, it is also impossible to view the key-binding menu while in the game. And, to top it all off, there is no pause option. These features just seem so essential to me, I can’t understand why this game wouldn’t have them.

Ultimately, Sonic Smash Bros is a great concept, that is currently being held back by some poor design flaws. I’m hoping that once the game finally gets out of Beta it will actually reach its true potential. SonicGames.com also features other great Sonic cross-over games like Final Fantasy Sonic and Sonic Truck.

If you have some free time, and don’t mind the Beta then I suggest you check it out, if only for a brief moment.
