Director of Deadpool Develops Sonic the Hedgehog Movie

Tim Miller, director of Deadpool, moves from the lover of chimichangas to the devourer of chili-dogs!

Having left the production of the Deadpool sequel last month, Tim Miller, who directed the first Deadpool movie, is now developing a hybrid CG/ live action Sonic the Hedgehog movie for Sony Pictures and Marza Animation Planet.

Unlike in Deadpool, Miller is not the director — but rather, the executive producer. Jeff Fowler will be taking the reins as director, and both Patrick Casey and Josh Miller will be writing the script. Toby Ascher will also be serving as an executive producer, while Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons will be co-producing the project.

Fowler has worked with Miller before, having cooperatively produced “Gopher Broke”, which was nominated for an Oscar award for best animated short in 2005. Together, the two have also been working on an adaptation of the comic The Goon, alongside David Fincher.

Reports of a Sonic the Hedgehog movie have been around since 2014. However, nothing was confirmed until this past February. CEO of Sega Sammy Holdings, Hajime Satomi, stated that the film was slated for 2018.

There have been several adaptations of Sonic the Hedgehog in the past, and the tones of them have been all across the board. We’ve seen a show built around slapstick comedy in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, we’ve seen a darker, more serious side of this universe in Sonic SatAM, and we’ve seen somewhat of a balance between the two extremes in the anime adaptation Sonic X, just to name a few.

Will Miller follow the example of one of these adaptations, or will he do something completely different? Only time will tell.

Do you think Miller is a good choice for this position? Will you go to see the Sonic movie? And most importantly, who should voice Big the Cat? Let me know in the comments!
